Connect to a 19" monitor (LG)

Used L1920P monitor with my G4 Powermac. Easier for these eyes to read xls files and such. (15pin connector / analog)
Recently purchased powerbook pro 2.2 ghz. Took DVI adaptor and plugged in. Now I'd like to have monitor display - where do I find the system preference that allows for using 2 monitors or another 1? Hopefully I'm missing something!!
Thought I'd need to download a driver - took original disc - label states drivers included. Upon opening only pdf manuals are there. Hazy memory of original instal.
If anyone can help I'd be appreciative!

system preferences > Displays > detect displays
display has to be connected and powered on at Mac startup
you dont need a driver, its built in to the OS

  • Connecting a 2nd Palette monitor to iMac

I have an iMac 24" 28Ghz (1Mac,8.1) and want to connect a second palette monitor to the mini DVI port, using a mini DVI to VGA connector.
A search of the forum shows issues with cursor jumping and wrong resolutions.
I really want to run my Adobe CS4 suite with the tabbed palettes on the second monitor to my right.
Is anyone doing this without issues?
    Peter

Well given the huge response, I figured I'd just go ahead and warn all the vendors that they could have their stuff back promptly if it didn't work as advertised.
I bought a dead cheap 2-for at OfficeWorks. 2 Philips 160EI TFT 40cm monitors, only A$186 for both. I also got an Apple mini-DVI to VGA adaptor which has dropped in price from Apple's previous rip-off rate to A$25.
Installation was quite straight forward although the monitor looks like a dwarf next to the 24" iMac.
I installed under OSX 10.5.8 and then switched to OSX 10.6.3. Under both it was recognised immediately but defaulted for some reason to a non-native resolution, easily fixed.
I didn't need to *color manage,* that's not what it's for, but both Apple's color calibration and the on monitor controls only screwed it up so I went back to the default settings just playing a little bit with the on monitor contrast and color to try and crisp up the Finder text which still seems too soft. Apple's color calibration lead it to be way too dark. The monitor controls way too light, so factory settings is where it stays.
Visually the monitor is a tad unsharp with a visible vertical banding a little like thin corrugation. Colors are pale, about max 70-80% tint to my eye.
I was able to set separate screen backgrounds, so that I could have a pleasing black & white background to my palettes.
I tested several applications running simultaneously along with movies on both monitors. All work flawlessly so far.
I can now run tutorial DVDs on the 2nd monitor whilst keeping the application to which it refers open on the main monitor. Nice!!
*Testing palettes with Adobe CS4:* They cleverly snap to whichever of the 2nd monitors edges they are dragged to and work perfectly even sensing the real estate available on the monitor. I have set them to snap to the inside (left edge of the 2nd monitor, which is to my right). This means that for the first time the optional sub-palettes pop out to the right in reading order.
All remember their position between re-startups. No sign of flickering or any of the problems reported in the forums. That is in both Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Flicking between fullscreen view using the tab keyboard shortcut and the toolbar options has different results. Sometimes the palettes stay with the main screen in full screen view, sometimes they disappear, I'm trying to work out what combination of actions sets off what.
*Testing palettes with iWork:* They have none of Adobe's smarts but can be stacked a little awkwardly to fit. Awkward because Apple hasn't worked out how to sensibly do this and made them different sizes. However they do remember their sizes (sort of) and positions between restarts.
Pages' Outline/Fullscreen view unfortunately blacks out both monitors. I was hoping I could keep my palettes visible on the 2nd.
Overall I am very happy. I worked with 2 monitors for almost 2 decades until Apple made it both expensive and extremely awkward on several occasions. It feels very liberating to have my full workspace clear again.
OSX is one clumsy design for handling windows, despite/because of all Apple's efforts.
There is no substitute for more/separate screen real estate. So far I am one happy camper.

  • My Yoga 13 Ideapad crashes and reboots when I connect to an external monitor!!

I have the Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock through which I am trying to connect to my desktop monitors.
What happens is an automatic reboot. After that reboot, I have been able to log into the machine again, but it will reboot after 2-3 minutes - maximum - if I am lucky.
I searched the forums, but did not find any other with this exact problem, so any help in discovering what goes wrong and how I can fix this is of course greatly appreciated.
My Yoga 13 is brand new, all the Windows Updates and Lenovo Updates have been applied, so I do not think it is missin device drivers. The docking station's software was installed before I hiooked it up, and I have tried connecting both through the USB 3.0 and the UISB 2.0 port, but that does not solve any problems.
Looking through the Event Viewer shows these errors occurring:
    * "The Desktop Window Manager has encountered a fatal error (0x8898008d)." This happens 8 times in a row
    * Then: "The winlogon notification subscriber <AUInstallAgent> was unavailable to handle a critical notification event."
    * "The description for Event ID 1 from source DptfPolicyLpmServiceHelper cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer." I have 2 of those.
    * In the System event log, I see this at the same time of the crashes: "The DisplayLinkManager service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 271311 milliseconds: Restart the service."
I have no idea on how to solve this issue, so please, if you have any tips or fixes for me, please let me know!

    hi nilsandreas,
can you please check c:/windows/minidmp folder and if there's any file, can you please upload it so i can check it?

  • What cables to connect to the VGA monitor

    Hello,
From what I know the Mini Mac 2010 includes a HDMI to DVI monitor adapter. I have a LCD display with a VGA port. How do I use this adapter to connect it to the monitor VGA port. I am thinking about connecting HDMI --> DVI adapter (included)to DVI ---> VGA adapter (purchase) to my monitor. Will it work?
Also, how do I know if the Mini Mac is 2010 or early version before I buy it?
    Thanks.

Using the stack of adapters you suggest will definitely not work. The VGA monitor is not a digital signal, where the HDMI is. DVI specs support both analog and digital signals, but when using a DVI to HDMI cable it should have the digital only version of the DVI connector. Even if you can find adapters to fit, you can not go between HDMI and VGA without a digital to analog conversion device in the middle.
Your only practical option is the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter.
If you are asking how to tell a 2010 HDMI equipped mini from earlier models, its quite simple - the HDMI native models are all the unibody aluminum design. The earlier models without HDMI have the plastic top.

  • Connect a Professional CRT monitor to iMac

Is there any way to connect a Professional CRT monitor to an iMac? I need to color correct my short film. If a regular monitor won't work what kinds will for accurate color grading?

I'm not sure what a professional CRT is compare to other CRT displays, but if it uses a VGA connection, all you need is a mini-DVI to VGA adapter.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A
I have a 21-inch flat screen CRT attached to my iMac at 1600x1200 resolution. It can go to 1792x1344, but that's a bit too small with the text, and the refresh rate drops to 60 Hz instead of 75 Hz at 1600x1200. You can, of course, choose all the standard resolutions down to 640x480.

  • Can MBA connect to 2 external monitors?

I have been using a dual-display graphics card in a PC for some time, with 2 monitors connected to make a large working area. Is it possible to do this with the MBA? Is the mini displayport to DVI compatible with dual-display? So far, I have been able to successfully use the MBA with lid closed connected with one external monitor. Cheers!

My impression is that the dual-display adaptor may work with one of those Y DVI splitters for dual-monitor cards. But is anyone certain about this?

  • Is there anyway to have an 11 inch mac air connected to an external monitor with lid closed and still be able to see content. I have a wireless ketboard and mouse and have tried everything. Only works when plugged in.

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
BTW when posting when you use generalities such as "have tried everything" this tells us nothing. When posting please be specific and try to paint a complete picture. It just makes things easier for those trying to help you.

Yes. You can use the thunderbolt ports with either DVI or HDMI adapters to connect the screens to.

  • When my macbook pro is connected to an external monitor

when i close my macbook pro whilst it is connected to an external monitor the internet connection slows down, does any body know how to fix it ?

A quote from the attached article:
Certain external monitors and LCD displays: Certain displays may emit harmonic interference, especially in the 2.4GHz band between channels 11 and 14. This interference may be at its worst if you have a portable computer with the lid closed and an external monitor connected to it. Try changing your access point to use 5 Ghz or a lower 2.4 GHz channel.

  • Connecting Macbook Pro to Monitor

    Hi
I've got a Macbook Pro (early 2011 model) and I was wondering my options for connecting to my HPZR24w monitor. I'm not sure of the connector names, so I have taken a pic of what I have.  I've had a look on the apple store, but as I'm not 100% sure what the connectors are, if someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great.
    Many Thanks
    Wayne

Your HPZR24w has DisplayPort, DVI-D, and VGA ports (one of each). You can use any of them, but each requires different cabling.
Best bet: Buy a Mini DisplayPort male to DisplayPort male cable. Plug the Mini DisplayPort end into the Thunderbolt port on your MacBook pro (the one just below the middle of your picture, with a little lightning-like icon) and the other end into the DisplayPort port on your monitor (which is the lowest one in that picture).
Alternatively, you could buy a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and male-to-male VGA cable to connect to the VGA port (the blue one), or a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and male-to-male DVI-D cable to connect to the DVI-D port (the white one).

  • With YP2 I cannot listen to music when connected to an external monitor

I am using the hdmi connection for my external monitor and when connected I cannot get any sound from my YP2. It works just fine when connected to a TV so I am assuming the sound signal has to be amplfied by the tv or receiver. A monitor typically does not have any sound amplification, I think, so my guess is this is the problem. I was hoping I could at least listen to music when earphones are plugged in, but I can't.
Another minor problem I have using the YP2 connected to my monitor is I cannot get the full resolution of the monitor, I will update this thread with the actual montior (it is an Asus 27" professional grade monitor with something like  2500x1600 resolution, I cannot remember the actual numbers) model number. The best I can get with the YP2 is around 2000x1200.
    Gary

I spent quite a bit of time with Lenovo support. They got on my computer remotely, replaced the display driver, and still the same problem. It appears the problem is the resolution can only be adjusted by increments. The highest was 3200x1800 and the next lowest was 2000x1500 and then 2000x1000 (I am rounding the last two). So the computer resolution defaults to the 2000x1000 resolution when hooked up to the external monitor.
For all practical purposes this is fine. I rarely have to do any photo editing that is that critical and if I need the higher resolution I can edit with my desktop.
