Connect to an XServ using ARD to check on an FM 5.5 Server

Need some help. I have Filemaker Server running on an XServ at another LAN location probably on another subnet. I have apple remote desktop on my computer with the FM server name in the Master List in the main window. I just need to verify that an export took place on the XServ.
Do I use the "observe" menu option? I did this and I got the spinning beach ball and had to reboot. It is extremely important I don't crash the FM server since there are 100-200 users but I need to make sure the import happened.

Connecting from a hotel using ARD, no luck

I am attempting to get ARD to work when I am on the road and in hotels. No such luck.
FYI following ports are open on the computer (MM) I try to reach and the router it sits behind.
Computer (MM) to be controlled:
Remote login SSH port 22
Apple remote desktop port 3283 and 5900
Router:
Ditto all same ports open on router.
MBP from which I try to control.
Ditto all same ports open on MBP
Now in a hotel I know I have no control over these ports and I expect this to be the cause.
I can establish a SSH tunnel connection to my server using SSH Tunnel Manager.
Again having done this I am not able to run ARD so it will connect through the SSH tunnel. I must admit I am also not 100% clear how to do this but have experimented for hours.
I have searched this forum with no luck and googling seem to not be fruitful either. I found this, and followed all steps in http://www.starklmc.com/ard.htm, but no luck either.
Any suggestions please!?

You could try this with just a standard VNC client:

Otherwise, if you have some knowledge of the command line, you could setup a Hamachi network, which would give you a dedicated tunnel to each computer setup on your Hamachi network. Instructions for that can be found by digging through the OS X section here: https://forums.hamachi.cc/

Does anyone have detailed instructions on how I can us my AirPort Extreme and setup all the ports to allow the use of ARD remotely?

You can configure your AirPort Extreme for ARD using the AirPort Utility. ARD is one of the choices under Port Mapping.
You get to the port mapping option, as follows:
Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the AirPort Extreme, and then, select Edit.
Select the Network tab to enable it.
Click on the "+" button under the Port Settings field.
Click on the drop-down arrow to the right of the Description field. (see image below)
Select Apple Remote Desktop. This will automatically populate the other fields on the page.
Select Save, and then, select Update.
Allow the base station to reset.

Using ARD from Xserve to Xserve

We currently have two offices separated geographically but each office has an Xserve running the server software. Both servers act as routers, DHCP, and NAT, etc for computers that are internal to each office. We host our own email, web, DNS, etc ourselves although the server in one office does most of the work with the server in the other office acting as a backup and to act as a router, etc for the other office.
I am trying to use ARD 3.1 to connect to the computers in this other office so I can both do asset management and offer help to users as well as other tasks. So I want to be able to use the full abilities of ARD.
Reading through the posts it seems that the best way to connect the two is either to use a series of VNC connections and port forwarding or to set up a VPN connection between the two servers. After some effort I set up VPN on the second office computer and I can open a VPN connection from the computer that I use for management here in my office.
However although ARD will find a single IP number the network range is not successful in finding any computers. Trying to connect to a single known IP will result in a successful verify but the connection always fails. The user that I am testing with has installed the client software and everything seems to be on but it still doesn't work.
At this point I don't know what to do. I am not even sure if the VPN connection is working properly. I can not ping any of these IP numbers so I am wondering if this means it (VPN) is not working properly.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed would be most appreciated.

Well I never did get any answers to my question but in the end with some experimenting I solved the problem. And the solution was quite simple.
I wanted to be able to use ARD to support users in another office as well as my local office. Both offices have an Xserve running server software. Both servers provide internet access for the computers in each local intranet.
I first created a VPN connection on the second xserve using the builtin tools provided. Then I made sure that the firewall was open to the VPN connection.
From the computer I use as the ARD admin user I opened up a VPN connection to the second computer.
At this point it did not seem to work. I tried various things to fix it, many of which have been suggested in this forum. None of them worked.
Experimenting with the settings for the Network Port Configurations I moved the VPN port to the top of the dialog above the standard Ethernet connection. Not having much to lose I again tried the VPN connection and ARD and it worked!
ARD was able to find the computers on the second network and connect to them.

Using ARD remotely connecting to work computer with Airport Extreme...

So I've looked through the forums, over the interwebs, through the ARD PDF manuals online and I'm coming up short. Ugh.
I want to connect from my home laptop to my desktop at my small business where we're using an Airport Extreme for a router. I can NOT figure out how to get this configured to work. We use ARD within the business, so on the same network, no problems. With the router, I'm guessing I need to get the computer setup to have a locked in IP and whatnot but no where can I find the instructions that tell me EVERTHING I need to do. Can someone here point me in the right direction please or hit me over the head with a 2x4 of exact instructions!

Hi Shawn,
So the steps listed bellow assume some things. They assume that the Airport Extreme Router your configuring is connected directly to the internet connection. And that the Airport Extreme is the only router between your computers and the internet.
That means we're talking about say a DSL modem plugged directly into the Airport Extreme, or a cable modem. in ether case, this assumes that said modem, is not acting as an internet router.
If your modem has multiple ethernet ports on it, or has a little antenna sticking out of it, then your modem is probable also a router, and these steps listed bellow will probable not work.
Also these steps are so one person, can connect to one computer at your work.
Open Airport Utility:
go to the dock
Click on the finder
go to the menu bar
Click on the "Go" menu
Chose "Utilities" from the "Go" Menu
double Click on "AirPort Utility"
Access the Base Station:
Double Click on your Airport Extreme BaseStation that is your internet connection router.
a new window should pop up with your Airport Base Station as the Window Name
Configure Static Address for the computer you want to connect to via ARD:
Click on the internet Icon from the toolbar
Click on the "DHCP" tab
For "DHCP Reservations:" Click on the "+" button
For the "Description" put "ARD"
For "Reserve Address by:" set "DHCP Client ID"
Click the "Continue" button
For "DHCP Client ID:" set "ARD"
write down the number in "IPv4" address field
Click the "Done" Button
Configure routing to ARD computer:
Click on the "Advanced" icon from the tool bar.

Configure the ARD computer to use the correct IP address:
Go to the computer you want to be able to remotely connect to
On that computer, Go to the menu bar
Chose the "Apple" menu bar
Chose "System Preferences…"
Click on the "Show All" button
Click on the "Network" icon
For the active network connection, (the connection on the left side with the green dot), click on it
Clock on the "Advanced…" button
Click on the "TCP/IP" tab
for the "DHCP Cient ID: field put "ARD".
Click the "OK" button
Click the "Apply" buttonNOTE: Under "Status" you should see "(connection name) is connected to (airport base station name) and has the IP address (IP address)." the "(IP address)" address displayed should match the IP address you wrote down in step "3. 8."
Find out what your public internet IP address is.
On the computer you wish to connect to over the internet, goto http://whatismyipaddress.com/
when the web page loads, you should see "IP Information:" fallow by a number like 192.168.0.1, write down what ever number it is.
At this point you should be able to connect to the computer remotely
connect to the internet from another location.
open Apple Remote Desktop
go to the file menu
chose connect to computer using ip address
set the address to the address to the IP address you wrote down for step 6. 2.
use the same password as you used to connect to the computer at work using ARD.
So here the catch. If your router gets reset... well then your going to have to configure it again. Also all the same rules you have to connect to the computer at work, also apply to connecting to the computer from over the local network. That means your computer need to be on or sleeping. And if it's sleeping it need to be configure to wake for network access.
Also some network connections change. When it comes to internet connections, some connections are static IP, while other connections are DHCP. If your connection is static... great! if it's DHCP, your address may change. If it dose.. well then your ability to connect will break. And then you'd have to do step 6 & 7 again.
Of corse there are ways around this. But that's kind of another conversation.
Some internet locations may block your ability to connect to your computer at work. This is very common at schools, and companies. Basically any place that tries to control your ability to browse the internet, may block remote access to computers; because a remote computer would completely by pass their web filter.
ALSO there is an easier option. As far as setup. There are programs designed to make remotely accessing your mac as easy as possible. For instance there is LogMeIn or Slack. With both of these programs, it's simple. make sure your computer is always on. Then install the software. Create an account with the service. And then you can connect to the computer almost any where by going to their website.
This option requires no router configuration. It handles DHCP. It's designed to work in as many locations as possible.

Did you try all of this:
iTunes Store loads partially or returns "Error 306" or "Error 10054"
Proxies, parental control settings and software, security or filtering software, or a bad iTunes Store cache can cause this.
To address proxies, Remove Internet Options proxy settings and connect to the Internet without a proxy.
To reset iTunes Store cache:
In iTunes, choose iTunes > Preferences (Mac) or Edit > Preferences (PC).
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the "Reset cache" button.
Click OK and see if the issue is resolved.
Adjust Parental Controls in iTunes:
Open iTunes.
Access iTunes preferences:
On a Mac: From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
On a Windows PC: From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
Click the Parental Controls tab.
Remove restrictions on Parental Controls.

I can't download OS5 or, rather, iTunes does download it about 450 mb and then, a few seconds after it starts processing the file, I get the message that I am timed out and am recommended to check my internet connection. I am using 3g to download it.

I don't know which country you're in, but in the US, carriers limit the amount of download for a single file when using 3G. Have you tried wifi?

Can anyone please help me. I keep getting this message "connect to iTunes to use push notifications" I've checked every single site for a solution but all I got was to restore and I don't want to do that. How can I fix this.

Did you get any help on this? From what I can see from surfing this site, it's a BUG that no one has offered a solution to. It sometimes happens after a 'reset' and going to ITunes does not offer a way to 'set up push notifications'.

Cannot log in to OSX Server using ARD

I am struggling with a problem that I cannot figure out. I posted this on the ARD discussion group and did not get a reply.
I use ARD, latest version, all updates, to remotely control about 9 machines across two locations that are linked by a pair of NetGear FVS124G routers connected by fulltime VPN. All of the Macs are running 10.5.4, all have the latest updates across the board, as do the single OSX servers in each location both of which are running OSX 10.5.4 server with current updates.
I can access all of the workstations using ARD without difficulty, both locally and across the VPN.
The servers will not authenticate, returning the message, "Authentication failed to ....... Server"
The message seems straightforward enough, its cause more obscure, and I get the same message on each of the two servers.
The login I am attempting to use in ARD is an administrator account, sharing on the servers is set to allow full access in the sharing setting in System Preferences in both servers, and I have no trouble using either the server preferences or server admin tools to control the two servers.
It is just that ARD won't allow the login that works with either local login or the server tools. I am able to login to each server with SSH without difficulty.
In checking the two servers, I am surprised to see them both listed in ARD info page as OSX 10.4.11 clients (which they clearly are not), whereas they are both listed (accurately) as running the current ARD client.
I suspect something fairly simple in my configuration of the two servers that I am overlooking since I can log into all the OSX workstations at either location from ARD at either location.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your response. As I think I understand what you are saying, you do not use the "all users" setting for remote access in the server settings, and then allow ARD to provide remote control.
I have used the all users setting for ARD, and will try changing this on the servers. The other settings are already as you suggest.

Apple Remote Desktop Can't Connect to an Xserve running 10.5

I was upgrading an Xserve with dual G5 processors from OS-X serve10.4 to 10.5. I've got a keyboard and monitor plugged into the Xserve. Apple Remote Desktop v3.5 can't connect with the Xserve. File sharing on the server is checked to allow it. The ARD ports seem to be open on the server. .When ARD scans our network computers, the Xserve says Access Denied next to it. When I try to connect it says something like "Unable to Verify." Any ideas what the issue might be?

Well the File Sharing service would not have anything to do with remoting in. Have you checked Remote Managed and checked to see if the accounts listed with access have everything checked off?
Did the local admin password of the server change? Can you ping the server?

Using ARD to image new macbooks

I would like to use ARD to set the startup disk to our netboot server for our new out of the box macbooks is there a way to see these computers with out setting them up. I want to turn them on and connect to them with ARD set the startup disk and image.

We have found it easier to hold down the N key on new computers, but when we have had XServes with no video card fitted, you can connect to them via the bonjour scanner to set them up, The password is the hardware serial number. They appear as XSERVE56fg76hg678 kind of name, maybe with the mac address. Im not sure if other models do this or whether it is a special feature of the server version of OS X.

IOS7 - Message "Connect to iTunes to use Push Notifications"

Since upgrading to the iOS7 on my iPhone, I keep getting the message "Connect to iTunes to use Push Notifications" in certain applications, and I cannot cancel out of this message as it continually pops up. The only way I can exit the app is by shutting down the phone and restarting it.
I am also experiencing difficulties connnecting to iMesssage. In Settings, iMessage: there is a message that says "Waiting for activation" and when I "Use my Apple ID to sign in" I get the message "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again" but my network connection is fine because I can access Safari.
PLEASE HELP. This is extrememly frustrating.

How do I connect into my mac using Apple Remote Desktop

I have version 2 of this but am not that network-savvy. How can I connect to my G5 at work, from home, and vice versa?

If a user is an administrator on the computer they can do almost any thing they want.
You could install Apple Server Admin Tools onto your computer. One of the applications included in the tool set is Workgroup Manager. Work group manager can be used to create/modify MCX. Ether on the local computer or remotely on an MCX compatbale directory server. (such as open directoy) MCX can be used to force a specific setting for many plist controled features.
You can use it to force a setting like time till screen saver starts. Require password when waking from sleep/screen saver. Force login window isntead of auot-login on reboot/startup.
The nice thing about using a server, such as an open directory, is that it's very easy to push out MCX policy updates. Of corse you would have to update your computers to the directory server.
If you don't have a directory server, and don't want a directory server. Then you can use work group manager to modifies the local policy of a comptuer. you can then use a unix commands to extract the actually MCX settings. You could then use ARD Send Unix command to apply the MCX settings to one or more remote computer.
ether way, an admin on the computer could still remove the MCX. But the user would have to figure out where setting is coming from. and then figure out how to remove the setting.

Forcing a Mac with 2 connected ethernet ports to use one over the other

I have a G5 Quad and a Mac Pro that are connected to a large network (including internet) on ETHERNET 1, and they are also directly connected over ETHERNET 2 (using Jumbo Frames). I need to ensure the G5 uses ETHERNET 2, and not ETHERNET 1, to connect to the Mac Pro. They must use both connections. How do I do this?

I've solved the problem. When connecting to the other computer, don't map the drive from the Finder sidebar. Instead, go to the Finder, hit Cmd+K, or select Go > Connect to Server..., then type the IP address of the other computer's ethernet port that you are directly connected to. Then write an Applescript to automatically mount the drive on startup.
Example Applescript:
+mount volume "afp://192.168.1.1/"+
Compile and Save the script as an Application with none of the Options checked. Place the script on the remote computer (the G5 Quad in my situation) in a suitable location like the Documents folder for your Username.
Next, on the remote computer, open System Preferences > Accounts, and select the correct account. Select the Login Items tab, and click the + to add your Applescript application to the list. After adding the Applescript, check the Hide checkbox so the script runs in the background. Close System Preferences and you're done. Reboot the computer to verify it connects, and voila!

Error connecting to oracle DB using SAS 8.1

I am using SAS 8.1(2005 Q1) and the oracle server is 9.2.0.1. I am trying to run a sample application given in the app server (jdbc-simple) and it's not connecting to the database.
I am using oracle thin driver.
I have created the jdbc connection pool named jdbc-pool too. Is there anything else I shud do? I am able to ping to the database using this connection pool but not able to run the application and getting http status 500 error with the following message:

Other solution:
on refresh period, default value is 1 minute, force this value at 0 and your connection
is ok.

I have created a connction pool called genPool,
set the URL :jdbc:oracle:thin:@genoracle:1521:GENORANY
driver class name = oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
Properties:
user=name ** where name is user
password=xx **where xx is password
dll=ocijdbc8
protocol=thin
I created the Tx Data Sources with
name = weblogic.jdbc.jts.genPool
jndi = weblogic.jdbc.jts.genPool
poolname = genPool
Can anyone help me through this, it would be a great help
