  • Purchasing from another country's iTunes store

    Hi,
I am based in Australia and use iTunes extensively to buy music. Some of the songs that I am after are not available on the Australia iTunes store, but are on the US site. Is there a (legal) way to purchase these songs?

    Hi, Rael.
Is there a (legal) way to purchase these songs?
Unless you happen to have a residence and credit card billing address in the States, unfortunately there isn't.
The reason why has to do with the business part of the music business so, for a bit of insight into the present situation, let's have a look at to This Business of Music (10th Edition) (by M. William Krasilovsky and Sydney Shemel) :
The difficulty of establishing workable business models for digital files (...) extends to where they are sold and where they are played. This is the issue of territoriality, and it is an illustration of how the Internet makes it necessary to reexamine basic assumptions that have been taken for granted (...).
(....) In the music business the primary problem is that copyrights are national and therefore specific rights are tied to national laws and the interpretations of national courts.
(.... T)hough we can one day hope to see the development of common standards with respect to copyright, the fact that the music business is building upon a history of nation-specific contractual relationships means that the goal of universal international standards is not, for the forseeable future, a practical one.
(...) Adding to the difficulty (...) the copyrights themselves may have been assigned to different companies in different territories. The best hope for a cleaner start and a simpler future is worldwide recognition that digital uses are in fact - and should be in law - totally new.

  • Buy a song from another country's itunes

I'm an American currently in Australia and I would like to buy a song that is not offered in the US itunes store but is for the Australian itunes store. I am trying to download it but itunes says it is unavailable to me. I am in Australia, so why can't I buy it from the Australian store? What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks

I only want one song so if I were to buy an itunes gift card here in Australia, when I return to the US I wouldn't be able to use it in the US itunes store?
Correct. Your credit balance would not be transferrable to another country's iTunes Store, and you would not (by the terms of use) be able to continue to use the Australian iTunes Store. So it's probably not practical for a single song. Either get someone with an Australian iTunes Store account to gift you the song, or pick it up on CD (which is expensive for a single song, but less expensive than buying an entire gift card for just one track).

  • Using another countrie's itunes store

Has anyone tried to purchase a song from a different country's itunes store? I want to buy a song by Sandi Thom that is only available in the UK, but itunes says I can only purchase in the US store. Any suggestions? Thanks,
    Sammy3

The issue of cross store purchasing comes up frequently so I'll just quote one of the most complete explanations (courtesy of Dave Sawyer) from the many given:
The content owners do not allow cross-border sales from any of the legal download stores (not Apple or the proprietors of any of the other large stores..... though I believe there are a few exceptions among smaller/specialist vendors). You must therefore have legal residence in the country of the iTunes Store you wish to use. So in order to buy from another country's iTunes Store, you must (as proof of residence) have either:
    a) a credit card issued by a bank in that country with a billing address also in that country, or
    b) a mailing address for your residence in that country and a gift certificate or a prepaid card that was bought in that country.
If you cannot fulfill one of these two sets of conditions, you will not be able to purchase from any given country's iTunes Music Store.
This, again, is due to restrictions placed on Apple by the record companies and other rights holders (who are often completely different from country to country and so all require their own individual negotiations and contracts), not by Apple's choice.

  • How can I buy movies available only on another country's iTunes?

how can I buy movies available only on another country's iTunes?

You can't, you can only buy from your own country's store - to be able to buy from another country you will need to be in that country and have a valid billing address, and iTunes account. in that country. You can try requesting that the films that you want to buy be added to your store, but ultimately it's the film studios decision : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

  • Cannot purchase from another country's iTunes....

I know we cannot purchase from another country's iTunes, but how about if someone in that country gifted songs to us? For example, my wife here in the U.S. wants stuff from the Japanese iTunes store but can't buy it; can her sister in Japan "gift this song" to her? Thanks.

No, you can only successfully gift to people who are in the same country as yourself - the gifting may appear to go though, but your wife won't be able to redeem it

my friend, uses itunes japan and she download japanese songs..
    but she uses itunes 4
and i was wondering if u can look at another country's itunes with itunes 7

In order to use an iTunes store from another country, you would have to have a credit card with a billing address in that country. And no, buying an iTunes gift card from another country doesn't work. And no, your friend can't gift you music from the Japan iTunes store.
This is do to licensing deals with the copyright holders. It's not just Apple being difficult.

  • Using Different Country's iTunes Store

I keep getting this error message:
"An e-mail you’ve specified to receive a gift is set up for an account in a different country’s iTunes store. Gift recipients may only redeem their gift in this iTunes Store."
What must I do to be able to send the gift?

Sorry, but you can only gift within the US. There's no way to give an iTunes Store gift to someone in another country.

  • HT201389 Update apps purchased in another country's App Store?

Will I be able to update apps purchased in another country's App Store?

I already have this mess. No you will not. Unless you change back to the country that you bought the app from. Oh, but then you run into the problem that you need a valid address and payment method from that country.
So no, if you move to another country, Apple will steal all your apps.

I want to be able to keep app's, music, movies and my Cloud/Match exactly the same.  How do I do this?
Because of different local copyright laws and licensing you cannot keep everything exactly the same except for iCloud, which is not affected. You will have to create a new Apple ID for use on the UK iTunes Store with a form of payment drawn on a local bank and an address in the UK. As long as you have downloaded all your purchases and the computer is still authorized to play all protected video content that won't change, however Apps may give you trouble when updating because once associated with an Apple ID you can only switch between stores every 90 days.
As for iTunes Match you must contact Australian iTunes Store support to cancel the subscription and you will have to resubscribe on the UK store.

  • Can't create iTunes account or change country of iTunes store

    Hello,
I hope this is the correct place to post this question.
I am set up my iTunes account, and the problem I'm running into has to do with the 'country' setting.
Going through the account setup process, at the credit card information screen, I click the link in order to change countries. I select 'Canada', and click 'Change Country'. At this point I am sent back to the iTunes store main page, which is set to the United States.
If I scroll to the bottom of the main store page, and select 'Canada' to change the country setting manually, I get the error, "Could not complete the iTunes store request. The store may be busy. Check your internet connection or try again later."
I have checked my Norton Internet Security firewall settings. I have cleared the DNS cache. The iTunes store functions normally in other ways, i.e. I can play song previews.
If anyone can help me fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated!
