Connect to database via another machine
We have a machine that is setup with a VPN connection to a database outside our firewall. Whenever we need to access this database we make a remote desktop connection to this machine.
We would like to be able to connect to the database directly from our workstation using the machine with the VPN connection as a gateway.
Any pointers in the right direction are welcome.
Rene
Dear Rene W.!
Please have a look at the following link. Your subject has already been discussed there:

Cannot connect to database via TNS
Hello!
I installed XE with default settings and have some trouble. I cannot connect to database via TNS. Two symptoms:
1. I can connect with SQLPLUS system/pwd (locally, without tns name input), but CANNOT connect with SQLPLUS system/pwd@EX (WITH TNS NAME input).
2. I cannot start Database Home Page.
How to avoid this problem? Any ideas?

Problem in recovering a database on another machine
Dear All,
I need your help in restoring and recovering a database on another machine. I don't have access to old machine to get logfile or archivelogs. I have taken full backup using RMAN. I have restored the database using rman sucessfully and trying to recover the database. RMAN have't restored the logfile. Database version is 8.1.7.4, OS is Solaris 8. In recovery, its showing the problem in rbs file. I'm showing all command and error. Just give me any idea that how to recover it sucessfully.

This RBS file size is 7GB. Is it the reason of problem. Even I tried until time, but its also has same error.
SVRMGRL>recover database using backup controlfile until time '2005-08-16:20:10:00';

Why its asking for archive file which generated on 19th, when I'm trying to recover until 16th only.
Regards
RakeshHi.
What is the size of the redo logs in the database. With a small amount of transactions, there might be redo in this particular archived file from two days back. The timestamp of the archivelogfiles does not indicate that all redo in the file is from this day. It might have changes several days back if no logswitch occured inbetween.
So, if I were you, I would provide all archivelogs required to get the datafiles consistent.
As a matter of fact, if archived redo is in the following folder :
/u07/oraexp/PROD/arch/
I would use recover database until time and press return for all archived logs svrmgrl comes up with.
I assume that the database was closed normally prior to taking the offline backup.
Good luck.
Rgds

Connecting to a database on another machine, please help!!!!!!
Hi there,
I am new to oracle and at the minute I am using Oracle 9i. I have set up a database on one machine (PC2) and would like to create an odbc from another machine (PC1) to connect to this database. I have set up a listener for (PC1) the using oracle net manager on PC2. what I want to know is: is there anything else I need to do on the PC2 end???? Also, what needs to be done on the PC1 end??? please help!!!If everything is setup and working properly on the Server PC2, you can just test the ODBC from PC1 (assum you already have an Oracle ODBC drive).

My local machine is : Redhat7.1, tomcat and oracle
Mysql machine is : Slackware, tomcat and mysql
I can ping and ssh the mysql machine. And I grant the mysql table for the permission to access the table. But still the same thing. What the problem?
Thank you in advance
peterin your error message:
javax.servlet.ServletException: Server configuration denies access to data source
The server being referred to is the mysql server. Mysql has uid and password like all db's, but in addition, it has security that is sensitive to the source of the connection. Just because you have a valid uid and password doesn't mean that you will be able to connect from anywhere.
This data is in the user table of the mysql database, which is included by default in every mysql installation. What you need to do is edit the privileges of the user account that you're using to connect to mysql from the jsp. There is some good documetation on user administration here:

Using mysql database on another machine without having mysql installed
Hi...
I was wondering whether its possible to copy a Mysql database that I have created on my machine, take it to another machine which does not have Mysql command line stuff installed and use my own JDBC connection to the copied mysql database and start manipulating my data. I don't know if this is possible or not ..
The main purpose of doing this is I am creating a Java program which uses a Mysql database and I want to know if I give it to someone else to use it do they have to install Mysql and all the package or can they simply start using it.
Thanks a lot

I don't know if this is possible or not ..No. Not only would it be in violation of the terms of your license, but a MySQL database is a client/server type setup. No MySQL binaries, no server, your client (jdbc) cannot connect.im just curious because im new to mysql myself, but what do you mean that its a violation of his license?
do you mean for the commercial version?If he licenses his application under GPL, okay, no problem. Otherwise I read this quote
Free use for those who never copy, modify or distribute. As long as you never distribute the MySQL Software in any way, you are free to use it for powering your application, irrespective of whether your application is under GPL license or not.
to mean that you are not allowed to distribute MySQL (or any part of it, unless your application is GPL licensed) with your application, and if he distributes even just the data directory, he is distributing at least a part of MySQL.
Other's may not see it that way, but do you want to take the chance?The critical element is the word distribute. If he tries to embed MySQL in the application he is giving to his users, he's distributing it. Hence a violation of the license. That does not in any way prevent him from including scripts that when the application is installed goes out and runs the script on the user's installation of MySQL and builds the databases and whatnot his application needs on their MySQL installation.
Now, for the OP. If all you're keeping up with is urls and such and you don't have hundreds of them. I wouldn't bother with a db at all. a properties file would actually serve your purposes, and xml would suit just fine. Of course you'd have to have access to the file system and such but no licensing issues at all.
PS. -
I can not connect to the database via C#. The database is showing full path of the database file instead of the database name. See the pic: a database showing only name 'emart' and the other database showing the full path.
: RobbyHi,
According to your post, I know that the database name is showing file path of the database rather than the database name in SQL Server Management Studio. You were not able to
establish a connection to the database using C#.
As Olaf said, was any error message thrown out when the connection failed? How did you create these databases?
You can use the following T-SQL to attach the database and see if the issue persists.
CREATE DATABASE
databasename
ON (FILENAME = 'filepath _Data.mdf'),
(FILENAME = 'filepath_Log.ldf')
FOR ATTACH;
Thanks.

Cannot connect to database via JApplet
Hi,
I created a Java application which allows me to send information to my mysql database using the jdbc connector via a JFrame. However when i modified the file to be a JApplet the info will not sent and i cannot connect to the database? Any particular reason for this?
I need it to be a JApplet so i can add it to a browser window.
Code: ( java )
private void save ()
Connection conn = null;
try
Statement stmt;
String userName = "root";
String password = "PASSWORD";
String url = "jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/DATABASE";
Class.forName ("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver").newInstance ();
conn = DriverManager.getConnection (url, userName, password);
System.out.println ("Database connection established");
//Get a statement object
stmt = conn.createStatement();
stmt.executeUpdate( "INSERT INTO TABLE(Info i know to put in) VALUES('Values i know to put in')");
catch (Exception e)
System.err.println ("Cannot connect to database server");
finally
{if (conn != null)
{try
{conn.close ();
System.out.println ("Database connection terminated");
catch (Exception e) { /* ignore close errors*/ }
As i said above it works fine as a JFrame but not as a JApplet. Any help would be great.
Thanks GYour error reporting is not good. You print a meanningless message or ignore the error.
Print the stacktrace in the catch blocks.
Change the code, rerun it and then check the Java Console for output.
I'm guessing you'll see a security error. Unsigned applets can't access the client file system. If so, sign the applet. -
Backup external HD USB-connected to TC via Time Machine
Hi
I am wondering whether it is possible to backup the content of an external hard drive that is directly connected to Time Capsule via Time Machine in addition to backing up the MBP HD.
My (relevant) setup:
MacBook Pro Late 2013 OS-X Mavericks
TimeCapsule 3TB gigabit ethernet connected to speedport W921V router
WD MyPassport 2TB external HD USB-connected to Time Capsule
TimeMachine is happily backing up my MBP drive to the TC, so this is all clear
Is it possible to configure TimeMachine to also backup the data on the external WD HD to the Time Capsule? If so, where and how do I need to configure this?
Thx
JoeI would never use TM the way I have suggested you use it.. which is very naughty of me.. so I do not know exactly how TM will react.. it should not be a problem.. It does not care if a source is missing.. just the destination.
I was trying to give you a solution to your problem.. without you incurring extra expenses. It is the wrong way to do it.. and is why I would never do it.. IMHO TM is great for what it does.. incremental updates of your main drive.. it is LOUSY.. as a way of backing up an external drive.. because it will have huge issues recovering it.
second question: CCC would then replace time machine as backup SW, correct?
No, the idea is to run both. TM provides a huge benefit to setting up a new computer for instance.. if the old computer is stolen or lost or damaged.. you can migrate from TM to the new computer (at least you can on a good day. it is not unknown for TM to fail completely). You do this easily as if the old computer was sitting there and you were running files between the two. It is also as stated above a good incremental backup software.
What it is LOUSY at, is complete disk recovery.. it is even more lousy .. lousier at recovering the disk that is not the main OS.
Just glance through this forum area or do a search for TM recovery issues.. it is a most difficult software. And of late in Mavericks has become worse than ever. You do not want to have a situation where you believe you have a backup and actually don't. Or your photo library or itunes you expect is backed up and is actually not.. or happens to be corrupted without telling you.
Step in CCC.. it is able to create backups in situations where TM cannot.. ie from network drives. It can produce a bootable image.. so if your computer disk failed you would be up and running again in 2min flat by plugging in a USB drive with the image. You can even use it to incrementally backup.. but I don't use it that way. Two completely different backup softwares offers you more than double the protection.. because IMHO TM is so complicated half the time you cannot get what you want out of it. CCC is simple.. it makes images and adds files in a completely standard backup way. ie a file can be simply copied out of the disk image and back to the computer without any software backup recovery running. The files are in plain sight.. easy to reach and use. In TM it is hugely complicated.. read how TM works. It is helpful to understand the difference.
http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html
Also read pondini's take on using disk images.
http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html
His recommendation is what i also think is the best.. use both.. each has good and bad points.. using two completely different methods gives you a huge improvement in the value of the backups.. and CCC is easy to produce a clone to store offsite adding hugely to your benefit..
For $40 license makes a lot of sense to me. -
Unable to connect to databases via SQLPlus or SQLDeveloper
Hi,
Current Setup: Linux Enterprise 5.8 64 bit/ Oracle 11g/ SQL Developer 3.1
I recently created a new Linux VM from scratch and installed Oracle 11g on it. Was able to successfully create databases via DBCA, how ever am not able to connect to these databases.

Restore Oracle XE database to another machine
I have an oracle XE database on a Windows XP machine, and I want to copy it to a Windows 7 machine.
On the XP, I performed a backup through the "Backup Database" from the GUI (BACKUP.BAT). The Oracle backup created 3 new folders underneath C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\XE\
ARCHIVELOG
AUTOBACKUP
BACKUPSET
I installed XE on the Windows 7 machine and it seems to work well.
Then I coped the 3 backup folders onto a jump drive and put them in the corresponding folder structure on the new Windows 7 machine. I ran the Restore from the GUI as an administrator (RESTORE.BAT). The restore failed, and I can't seem to figure out why. I'm not sure what the Sequence Numbers are all about.
Now I can't get into Apex or Apex_Admin
Thanks for taking a look at this.
The contents of the OXE_RESTORE file are as follows:

Recovery Manager complete.After playing around a little bit I fixed the problem.
There are a total of four folders in \FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\XE\ I had only copied three of the four.
ARCHIVELOG
AUTOBACKUP
BACKUPSET
The Windows services keep the files in ONLINELOG open, so I had to shut down the services and then work with the folder. Therefore four folders have to be transported and copied onto the new machine:
ARCHIVELOG
AUTOBACKUP
BACKUPSET
ONLINELOG
If you run as an administrator "Backup" from the GUI, it executes BACKUP.BAT, a batch file which calls RMAN. Once that's done, copy the four folders to the same location on the target machine and then run as an administrator "Restore" (RESTORE.BAT).
In another forum someone said to be sure that the "Archive Logs" are copied. It should be interpreted to mean not just the "ARCHIVELOG" folder, but all four folders.

Connecting to database via Dreamweaver
Hi All
I am trying to build a site using asp.net and SQL Server via
Dreamweaver.!!!! To help me on my way I decided to build a tiny
test site just to establish the connections. However, try as I
might I can’t make a connection to a database and am now
rapidly loosing the will to live due to the quite unbelievable time
I have spent trying to sort this out. Now this post is my last best
chance.
I am trying to connect to either of the databases that come
with the freebee SQL Server package (Is it called express or
something?). They are pubs and Northwind.
I am using Dreamweaver 8, XP Professional with the .Net
framework v2.0 and IIS.
However, when testing the connection in Dreamweaver I get a
choice of two different error messages depending on my
computer’s mood (I don’t change ANYTHING) The first is
the beautifully succinct and entirely unhelpful “an
unidentified error has occurred”. The second reads:
1) There is no testing server running on the server machine
2) The testing server specified for this site does not map to
the
ttp://Localhost/RootFolder/_mmServerScripts/MMHTTPDB.asp URL,
Verify that the URL Prefix maps to the root of the site.
After more hours trawling the net for answers, than I care to
admit to I decided in desperation to try out the Dreamweaver
tutorial that deals with these things (Café Townsend) to see
if it offered any clues. However, when attempting to connect to the
database (tutorial.mdb) I get the same two error messages:
“an unidentified error has occurred”.
1) There is no testing server running on the server machine
2) The testing server specified for this site does not map to
the
ttp://Localhost/MySampleApps/_mmServerScripts/MMHTTPDB.asp
URL, Verify that the URL Prefix maps to the root of the site. Again
dependent on my computer’s mood.
I am convinced that I have all the necessary components in
place and my connection strings are correct (I am aware that the
path given in the Dreamweaver tutorial for Café Townsend is
incorrect and have altered the string accordingly).
I now strongly believe the problem is something to do with
the MMHTTPDB.asp file in the _mmServerScripts folder but could
easily be wrong.
Does anyone know of a problem with Dreamweaver of this nature
or one that would result in my error message for either an Access
database or a SQL Server database?
I know Dreamweaver MX had a problem viewing database tables
whilst using .net and Adobe created a patch to fix the problem. Has
Dreamweaver 8 any similar problems?
I’m sorry this post is a bit long but trust me I could
have made it three times as long if I included everything I have
tried to resolve this!
Any help in the right direction would be appreciated more
than you can imagine.
Cheers
BurnsieSorry for jumping into the thread with a bit of an off topic question, but how do you find out what kind of a db the asp server is using? I've asked my company's web host a number of times for info/help in getting connected using Dreamweaver so I can redesign our site and I never hear back from them. It's a very specialized web hosting server set up for rubber stamp web sites. Looks like most of their customers use the online website design tool that they provide, but it is very limited in what it can do. Very limited.
They give me ftp access and I've changed what I can on the page, but with out access to the db it's hard to really change the look of the site.

Restore Oracle XE 10g Database to another machine
Hello,
I have an oracle XE database on a Windows XP machine, and I want to copy it to a Windows 7 machine.
On the XP, I performed a backup through the "Backup Database" from the GUI.
I ran the Restore from the GUI as an administrator. The restore failed, and I can't seem to figure out why. I'm not sure what the Sequence Numbers are all about.
Now I can't get into Apex or Apex_Admin
Thanks for taking a look at this.

Edited by: PhilMan2 on Jan 8, 2011 7:24 PMHi Hemant,
Thanks for responding. I still need some help.
I copied the Restore.bat file, and added the line SET UNTIL RESTORE POINT right after the SET LOCAL line.
Then I deleted and copied the three folders (ARCHIVELOG, AUTOBACKUP, BACKUPSET) that were produced from the Backup on the original machine to the corresponding location on the new machine. I ran the modified BAT file as an administrator and got similar results.

I have all the files of a database on a hard disk without previously backed up. I don't have the old machine right now, I only have the hard disk from the old machine, and the new machine. There is an Oracle 9i database on the harddisk, and we need make the database work.
I've already installed the Oracle 9i on the computer(Win XP), put the files to the right folder, modified the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora, then I added the database from:
OEM -> Navigator -> Add database to tree -> Add selected databases from your local tnsnames.ora file ...
When I tried to connect to the database, I got the error:
ORA-12500: TNS: listener failed to start a dedicated server process.
The setting in my tnsnames.ora and listener.ora are all correct. tnsping <tnsname> is OK. Besides, the default database installed by the ORACLE software works fine.
Both the old machine and the new machine are Window XP. Both the old database and the new database are ORACLE 9i.
Any idea on how to mannually make it work? Thank you inadvance!
LihuaLihua,
Since you didn't create the DB with DBCA, you will need to manually create a SID.
From a command window type
ORADIM -NEW -SID mydb
Replace mydb with the DBNAME specified in your init.ora and listener.ora files.
This will create and start the service. The service should now be available as a windows service in the computer management area...
From a COMMAND window type
set oracle_sid=mydb
sqlplus /nolog
connect / as sysdba
startup
If you have all the files in the correct location the DB should start. You should then be able to connect with the database manager. Good Luck.
