  • Connecting a desktop computer to the Internet via the Mobile Hotspot?

    Hello,
I've looked at the other postings about this but I'm still not having any luck....and I'm not really sure who to call for tech support.
I can connect my laptop to the Hotspot just fine. The desktop computer is another story.
I bought a Medialink wireless adapter and installed it per the provided directions BUT the connection says that is local only. How do I fix that?
I don't know for sure a local connection only doesn't allow me to actually connect to the Internet, right? I currently also have AT&T Internet with a router so is that complicating things? I'm going to drop the AT&T soon but I'd like to have this figured out first.
What do I need to do?
    I have absolutely no idea.....
    THANK YOU!

A local only connection means you are connected to the device, but the device is not letting you onto the internet.  I'd bet that you have a bogus IP Address and your hotspot has not fully authenticated you to use its internet.
Make sure you are disconnected from all networks, reboot the computer and hotspot, then try connecting again.  Make sure you are entering the correct credentials to connect to the hotspot.
Chances are good that the wireless adapter that you are using is the problem here.  If you were going to contact a support number I would start with them.  There might be another way to configure it to play nicely with the Hotspot.  Report back to us if you need more help configuring the hotspot.  We will need to know the specific model number so that we can provide you with specific steps.

  • Connecting to desktop computer without airport?

    Hi
I have a macbook and an imac g5, but the g5 does not currently have airport on it (although the macbook does). Is there a sensible way to connect my macbook to the desktop and how do I share files/ software etc?

When you attach the firewire cable you must first shut down the computer you want to access (with the cable attached) and hold down the "t" key while its booting, this will put the computer in "Disk Mode" (there should be a firewire symbol "dancing" around on a blue screen. Now, on your other computer, another hard drive will show up on the desktop, that is the one you want to access. You go inside this Hard drive just like your own, except you drag out the files you want.
If you are going to use a base station you could hardwire your G5 to it and wirelessly access it through your macbook, thought this would be significantly slower than connecting it through firewire. In this case, you would have to first go into system preferences, go to "sharing" and click start on both computers. Then go into "Macintosh HD", go to network at the top of the side bar, go into servers, and select the computer you want to access. It will ask you for a User name and password, the username is the name that shows up in your home folder. Assuming you are going to transfer data from the G5 to the macbook, you would want to go through this process on the G5 and drag the files you want into a folder on the macbook you have privilidges to access.
I am not completly certain what your intentions are, but if you want to quickly transfer data over, this is the way to do it (firewire is also much more simple to set up).
Note that when you are transfering applications over, just dragging over the icon in the Applications folder may not transfer all the data necessary for the application to run properly (such as Microsoft Office).

  • Xfinitywifi hotspot - limited connection with desktop computer, no login page

Lately I've ebeen trying to connect to a public xfinitywifi hotspot with a Windows 8 computer. It takes a good few seconds to connect, and I ALWAYS end up with a limited connection. It doesn't make a login page appear like it should, either. I'm sure that it's not because I'm too far away because I can place an iPod or my phone on top of my computer and they'll get a perfect connection and have the login page pop up. But this just doesn't happen with my desktop. I get a limited connection and can't do anything, not even log in. What could be causing this, and how do I fix it? Thanks.

wow. nobody has any ideas on this?

Apple TV 2 all of a sudden has trouble streaming.  I stream from my desktop computer's iTunes for movies, and tonight it started stopping randomly mid movie and saying it wasn't connected.  Any ideas?  Router?  ATV dying?
It just says not connected, and as soon as it bails to menu, it connects again and will play for another minute before doing the same thing all over again.

    Hello David,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your Apple TV is having trouble streaming videos from iTunes on your computer. This symptom could have a variety of causes, and I'd suggest the following initial troubleshooting steps.
In addition to restarting your devices (Apple TV, computer, router), try the tips in this article, starting with "Check your home network:"

  • My Apple desktop computer, 2.4 GHz Intel duo core, OS 10.6.8, stopped recognizing the WD My Book connected via firewire. It works fine with the USB port so it's not the drive. Help please.

My Apple desktop computer, 2.4 GHz Intel duo core, OS 10.6.8, stopped recognizing the WD My Book connected via firewire. It works fine with the USB port so it's not the drive. Help please?

It can be the bridge. It could need firmware update. or the FW ports may be an issue. LaCie seemed to invent the phrase/tip 'resetting firewire ports' due to the issues with their drive cases.
You can try an SMC Reset.
So far I have avoided name-brand and tend to see them mentioned. Often with a new OS (though you are on 10.6.8, but when 10.6 came out there was a common complaint and thread of users: FW or USB worked but not the other interface).

  • Cannot connect to wifi on desktop computer w/ Windows Vista

So as stated above, I cannot connect to the Airport Extreme wifi with my Sony Vaio desktop computer. My iMac, iPhone, PS Vita, and all other device can connect to it easily, but when trying to connect to the internet using my Sony Vaio desktop, I cannot. At first it showed up on the list of available connections, but then after calling TWC, they did something and it let it connect to the internet "with limited access". But after my father tinkered with it to try and give the computer full access, it cannot connect again.
In short: My Sony Vaio desktop computer running Windows Vista cannot connect to my Airport Extreme. So could anyone please help?

Did you try plugging in by ethernet?? Just to be sure there wasn't some fundamental issue.
If it works by ethernet and not wireless, then this is not at all unusual. Vista has the worst wireless drivers ever developed along with the worst wireless management.. an upgrade to XP or Win7 is strongly encouraged. .either direction is an upgrade.
Make sure the AE has all SMB compatible names..
Short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Do not use apple names with spaces and apostrophe.
Use wpa2 Personal security with a password of 10-20 characters again pure alphanumeric.
Use fixed wireless channels, try 1, 6, 11 in turn.
No improvement download the latest intel drivers (or whatever wireless card your laptop uses) direct from Intel. If that doesn't work try some earlier releases.. not always the latest is bestest.

  • E4200 - Desktop computer unable to connect

E4200 hooked  up through the cable box but not working on my desktop. I have done this procedure:
    1. Plug your Ethernet cord into the back of your desktop and the other end into one of the 1-4 ports on the back of your router 2. If your desktop is not close enough to the router to plug in directly, you can use a Dual-Band wireless adapter which connects your desktop wirelessly to your router. http://bit.ly/qPUavq
    ...and still does not work.

Yes you are right once the router is configured then you can use the desktop wirelessly ,  if you have the wireless adapter on the desktop .. However before that you need to connect your computer with the router with a ethernet cable and configure the router first and that can be done by using the CD or manully as well.

  • Can't connect to the internet with my wired desktop computer or my wireless laptop!

I'm stumped? Tonight I was surfing the internet when all of a sudden I lost my internet connection from my desktop computer? I tried various solutions to fix this but nothing worked? I'm currently hooked up to a wireless router model WRT160N. Here's the clincher, I unhooked the ethernet cable from the port on the router labeled "internet" and hooked it back into my ethernet port on my desktop computer and persto  everything worked fine!! I can't connect to the internet either using my laptop!? I hooked everything back up to my router and tried accessing the internet but nothing worked? When hooked up like this I lose my internet connection on my desktop computer as well??? I'm confused??? What could be causing this??? I've just recently configured my router last Satuday with the help of a Linksys technician?? I bought my router last tuesday!?! Need help here!!!! Both my laptop and desktop computer have Windows Vista Home Premium as OS.

You need to re-configure your router...

If your iPhone is not recognized by iTunes when connected - not available under Devices in the iTunes source list, check this link.

For voice memos, I have include voice memos when syncing selected under the Music tab for my iPhone sync preferences with iTunes which transfers voice memos from my iPhone to my iTunes library when syncing.

  • HT1212 After working perfectly for two years my iTouch has suddenly stopped connecting to my Hub.  I have tried everything I can think of to get it working again but to no avail.  My desktop computer still works through the same hub

After working perfectly for two years my iTouch has suddenly stopped connecting to my Hub although my desktop computer still connects.  I have tried everything I can think of, including suggestions off Google/You Tube but nothing makes any difference.  Any ideas.  Surely it is not fit for the scrap heap after two years, but is clearly no use as it is.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Hello, I dropped coffee on my keyboard. I wiped the coffee off as fast as I could, BUT I hit al sorts of buttons while it was still connected to my computer. NOW Everything looks  photo negative. I want to restore my desktop defaults.

Hit control-option-command-8 to reverse the negative effect. You can also do this, and check other settings, in System Preferences>Universal Access.

  • Can I Connect a hp desktop computer to a iMac

    Hi!
I have an old hp desktop computer that I would like to connect to my iMac. The hp is my moms that she stopped using years ago when she got a laptop.
There are some pictures that I would like to get off the computer for her.
Is there a way that I can connect the hp to my iMac and retrieve the pictures?
    Thank you in advance!

Much depends on your specific hardware and OS X version. I have an IOGear USB to parallel adapter that works with a LaserJet 4MP, two different Apple LaserWriters, and an older Canon inkjet.

  • Use WRT110 as a wireless access point to connect desktop computer to a WRT160N network.

I am having a problem setting my WRT110 connected to a desktop computer, as an access point to a net broadcast by a WRT160N. The WRT connects to the desktop computer, but does not see the WRT169N network. A laptop with 802.11g sitting next to the desktop is able to link to the WRT160N network, although the signal is weak, but workable. Has anyone any ideas on how to use the WRT110 as as access point rather than a router. I spoke with CISCO technician level 2, and he says it can't be done. CISCO website for WRT110 describes it as three devices in one, one being a wireless access point. CISCO technician says get a WAP, but I think I should be able to use the WRT110. Help appreciated.

Linksys Wireless Routers (WRT...) are simple access points. They don't establish a connection to any other wireless device. They only allow wireless access for clients. That's the definition for an access point: to be a point of access into the LAN for clients. It is a common misconception that a "wireless access point" would always include bridging or repeating capabilities although that is a completely different mode of operation.
What you want is not an access point but a wireless repeater (WRE) or a wireless bridge (WET) or a combination. The Linksys WAPs are versatile wireless devices which can be operated as access point, repeater, and bridge.
