Connect to server/computer issues

When I am using my Macbook Pro at work, it will attempt to connect to my iMac at home (which is unavailable). It only tries to connect to this computer when I am in Desktop and Screen Saver preferences.
When I am at home (and the iMac is available) it will load a message asking me to connect to the iMac.
I am unable to workout why or what it is looking for.
Does anyone know how I can tell my Macbook to forget about looking for the computer in all environments?
BTW: It has done this constantly under 'Snow Leopard' and 'Lion'

here are a few things to keep in mind.
1.) your wan ip is what the world would point to.
2.) your lan ip is your ip address
3.) your gateway is what your computer sees your router as, and is what it uses every time you google "team speak".
4.) the security tab has a feature "Block Anonymous Internet Requests"
this is enabled by default, "a good thing" which is part of why you
people in the world cannot "see" your server.
5.)the "Applications & Gaming" and tab is a relevant part of why you cannot get anyone to connect your teamspeak from the world. once you have configured the portwarding as required in the below link, you should be able to get this to start working.

6.) the DDNS tab provides the means for you to have a "quasi-static" address for people to connect to your server.

Connect to server auth issues

My company just moved to 10.7, and it used to be the case in 10.6 if I needed to connect to a server I could use user@servername if I wanted to authenticate as another user. It seems in 10.7 and 10.8 it is automatically using my currently logged in user only and it just ignores anything specified in user@. I can't find anything conclusive in Keychain Access, and it persist over mutliple machines so it's not my specific computer or user that has issues.
We are on an AD domain and this is happening over SMB and AFP.

404, published site won't connect to server, cache issue too

Using DW5...testing site ran perfect. Went live today and getting 404 and I can only sometimes connect to the server to upload. I also can't view the live version. Already cleared cache, already did a command ipconfig/flushdns...not sure what to do next. I think it has something to do with the cache.

Are you certain that the files are loading to the right location on the remote server? The path on your testing server and the path on the remote server won't necessarily be the same. When you go into your hosting account and look at the directory structure, do you have an index.html file at the root level?
Can you upload files using a different FTP software, like filezilla?

Issue with re-connecting a Client Computer to the Server Essentials R2 2012

I have an issue re-connecting a Client Computer to Server Essentials R2 2012. The Client Computer in question was connected to the Sever originally. I started getting Error Messages indicating that I was running out of storage room. I
had been wanting to re-configure this Server with additional Hard Drives for some time, but something else always came up first. Now, I was forced to address the problem. I shut down the Server and added additional Hard Drives and while I was at
it I replaced the original Hard Drive that the Server Operating System was on with a much smaller Hard Drive, and reinstalled Server Essentials on that Drive. Everything was working fine and the Server Back-up went fine to an external Hard Drive.
I was ready to re-install my Client Computers. I started with my primary Production Computer first. The Connector Software seemed to install fine, but as I moved through the Connection Wizard I received the following Error Message: "Cannot
connect this computer to the network. This computer is already connected to another Windows Server Network. Before connecting this computer to the Windows Server Essentials network, you must remove this computer from the current network.
To resolve this issue, contact the person responsible for your network". I am the Administrator. I removed the Connector Software following the instructions in the "Troubleshooting connecting computers to the Server", but I continue
to get the Error Message whenever I attempt to re-connect the Client Computer. I have not attempted to connect any of the other three Client Computers yet as I need to resolve this issue first on my primary production machine. Where am I going
wrong? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Based on the error messages that you provided, please remove the connector software from Control Panel completely. Then, in the problematic computer, please locate
to: Control Panel-> System-> select Change settings. And select the Computer Name tab in the System Properties dialog box, click
change button. Then in the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box, please take the computer out of the domain as a workgroup, and rejoin in new domain.
Please check if this issue can be solved. If it still exists, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

All of a sudden Safari cannot connect to server when I go on certain websites. But when I tried these websites on the same computer from a different location they opened fine.

I used to go on several websites without a problem, one being www.udel.edu/udsis but now all of a sudden when I try to open these websites it says "Safari can't connect to server". At first I thought my computer had the problem, but when I tried the other mac in my house I had the same issue. The next day I visited family in another state and brought my computer with me, I typed those website addresses in and they opened without a problem. But now I'm back at home and I still can't open those websites. What gives?

Leads one to suspect an ISP issue. Yours. Perhaps for the moment though. In any case I like to use OpenDNS servers for safety and speed.

In the left side column click on the + sign and insert the following:

You're probably running into the servers simply being swamped. Thousands of people are all going for the software update at the same time. Give it a try again and if that doesn't work, then try plugging it into your computer and trying it that way.
I didn't get a notion of the size, it doesn't seem to be as big as the 700 meg 5.0 update, but it did take me 20+ minutes to download via cable internet so it's a large file. That in and of itself takes a while.
If you're trying to download it directly to your iPhone, you'll need to be on wifi since I'm sure it's well over the 20 meg file size limit for 3G.

Computer Suddenly can not connect to server

I have a problem specific only to my Macbook that no one can seem to figure out and I really need help!
I have my own site that I'm working on and my Mac is just completely blocking it for some reason. Here's the situation:
I can access my site on any browser on any computer (in this house on the same wifi network) except from my computer. I can access my site through any FTP client on any computer in this house or anywhere, except through my computer. So on my computer, every browser says "cannot connect to server" (or some version to that effect). Every FTP client does the same exact thing on my computer alone.
So I guess I've narrowed down the problem that somehow locally on my computer, my mac is completely rejecting that server and/or that address for some reason! I have no issue with any other site on my computer or anything!
I've emptied cache(s) repeatedly, I've tried to ping other sites and I get good feedback, but when I ping my site, I get nothing. I've looked through other forums for help and found nothing! Nobody from Godaddy, charter, or apple support seems to have an answer for this! But I'm certain that this is a Mac issue, not an internet issue!
about 4 days ago, I had my site forwarding to another site and up to that point, I had no issue with any ftp client, or any browsers accessing it! In the midst of changing everything, somehow something changed on my computer to reject access to that server!
If anyone can help me, that would be GREATLY appreciated! I'm about to pull my hair out! thanks for any help!

Perhaps your problem is with DNS. Try setting your DNS to OpenDNS by going to 'System Preferences'>'Network'>'Advanced'
Click on the DNS tab and remove your existing DNS servers.
Replace them with 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
While you are at it, verify that your mac isn't connecting through a proxy.
Once you do that go to 'Finder' and click on 'Go'>'Connect to Server'
type in the server address in the following format "ftp://foo.com"
Click on Connect.

How do I connect to server (my other computer)?

I did this years ago but I don't remember the address I used. CMD/K opens the dialog box. My computer I want to connect is behind a modem and a router. What do I type in the for address? There is more than one computer on my home network. All hard drives have unique names. I have a DNS Alias IP address.
I want to do this with my computer when I am away from home. Like I said, I did it years ago but I don't remember the address I need to use. I've searched and everything I find doesn't sem to be what I'm looking for. The away computer is running 10.6 and the home computer is running 10.5.

Camelot is correct. You are asking for site-specific info.
I'm going to assume you're connecting remotely into your own network, and make some guesses, and hopefully help you recall how your network was set up.
What you enter depends on what access you've opened up into your network.
You can certainly try all the protocols you've listed. ftp, http, and the rest. (Well, not ftp. Avoid ftp. ftp is a pile of gnarly problems, and one of the best ways to make sure that anybody monitoring your network connections from the coffee shop will know your login credentials.   On a good day — one where your password and user aren't compromised — you'll still have to battle with getting the emphemeral port range working and open on either the client end or the server end, and through all of the intervening firewalls.   As should be obvious, I'm not a particular fan of ftp. Given a choice, I'd use sftp, or maybe ftp via a VPN.)
If your NAT device is correctly configured and at (more or less) its default settings, then absolutely everything you try for your remote access will be blocked.
Everything should be blocked, too, as you really don't want more than absolutely necessary open, as there are more than a few folks that would look to access your server.   The folks attempting remote access will generally find and try any open port, too. Even an open port associated with a relatively secure protocol can still have vulnerabilities, whether it's a protocol weakness that somebody discovers, or a weak password.
Now if you want to enable remote access of file services or such, then your NAT box will need to have TCP port 548 (AFP) configured and opened through, or whatever ports for whatever other service you want.
Beyond being insecure, ftp is a pain in the rump to open, as you either need a device that sniffs the traffic and opens the ports necessary, or that triggers on a connection, or you'll need to have the whole of the ephemeral port range open.
More appropriate for various remote-access contexts would be a VPN, either established via what's known as NAT pass-through (mapping the VPN ports through your NAT box to your OS X Server, and configuring the VPN server on your OS X Server box), or via VPN established directly into whatever gateway box you're using, if your gateway is mid-grade or more expensive box and has an integrated VPN server.   Not all of the NAT boxes have VPN support.
If you're in the Finder Connect To Server prompting:
If AFP (TCP port 548) is already open, then afp://youraddress
If CIFS/SMB (TCP port 445) is open, then smb://youraddress
But only somebody that's scanned your network or set up your network will know your configuration and which ports to use, both because of the NAT settings as well as any firewall you might be running on the server — OS X Server 10.6 could and variously did have the firewall service configured and running.
If you want to see what ports are already open, there are various remote services that offer that test. For instance, log into the server and use your web browser there to connect to GRC and run their Shields Up test; you'll need to run that port scan from within your network.   That'll tell you which ports are open through into your system.

Can no longer connect to other computer (server)

I have developed a problem this weekend, and can't seem to resolve it. I am connected to the internet via Linksys router (WAG54G) and since the wireless signal with my iMac has always been a bit suspect, the iMac is connected to the router via ethernet cable. My G4 Powerbook has always connected wirelessly, without a problem.
Currently, I can get both computers on the internet, no problem. I cannot, however, get them to talk to each other. On the Powerbook I get the message that the G5iMac "alias" is not available (and it will not allow me to delete this alias either, although I am the adminstrator). On the iMac I get the message that the "server is not available". Same thing happens if I type in TCP/IP address as if I select "Go Network".
I have repaired permissions, I have deleted com.apple.networkconfig.plist - nothing works. I don't understand what has changed, but how do I fix it? Any ideas?

Hi Jim,
Your issue is the most FAQ in the forums, it is an ongoing problem with Tiger waiting to be fixed by Apple. Till then, forget your aliases and use either Command-K or from the Finder Go-->Connect to Server and enter the remote Mac's IP address to connect.
Also, Open Utilities-->Terminal and type lookupd -flushcache (Press Return) and reboot. Do this for both macs.

Can't send message on AT&T - won't connect to server. Anyone else having this issue?

All of a sudden I can't send messages on my AT&T account. I get a message that Thunderbird cannot connect to server (STMP). Called AT&T and they verified all the settings; I can access my email account on Apple Mail and through Yahoo (AT&T's email provider) yet I cannot send messages on Thunderbird. I can receive but not send.
I did try deleting the account and re-establishing it however that did not help. Anybody else have this issue?

trying to get a user with an iphone 4 to update to latest IOS - he is on 4.2.1 - off and on for months he has tried and it always fails trying to connect to server etc.

Acrobat Connect Pro LMS 7.5 server cache issue - displaying old content

Our Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro server is showing old Captivate-created content from about 4-6 weeks ago.
I loaded 35+ sets of Captivate 3 (SCORM 1.2, HTML, zipped) content onto our Acrobat Connect Pro LMS about 6 weeks ago.
I converted all training content from Captivate 3.0.1 to 4.0.1, 4 weeks ago by opening each file in Captivate 4 and following prompts to "Save As" new files with different file names.
I reloaded all content 4 weeks ago, and again 2 weeks ago.
I reloaded about half of all content again last week.
End User Acceptance testing performed this week showed that most of the courses are showing old content, ranging from 2-6 weeks old
Attempted fixes and workarounds:
Deleting content entirely and reloaded from scratch - this will not work long term, as we lose usage data each time we reload completely new files.
Contacted Adobe, provided times to track incidents of the issue. We reached Tier 2 - who told us it was our problem and that everything appeared to be working fine from their side.
New workaround - load new content and reattach course to new content. This presents the same long term issue as the first workaround, but enables us to retain older versions of content in the system, should we need to revert or report on it.
Gaining server side access is a bit challenging due to the hosting situation we have, so I am looking (ideally) for a solution that can be performed from the Administrator/Author Frontend. However, I want to learn the real cause of the problem, wherever it might reside, so that it can be properly corrected and avoided in the future. I am calling this a server cache issue, as it seems the server has somewhere retained unwanted old versions of content, preventing current content from being displayed to end users. Viewing content as an end user = see old content. Viewing content from the Content area (Author view) shows the current files, so I know they are on the server and are loading correctly, up to a point.
I am preparing all content for another round of loading/reloading due to other issues and updates, so republishing and reloading all 35+ files into the LMS is unavoidable at this point.
This issue is keeping our LMS from launching to several thousand users across the country, so any suggestions or helpful tips are much appreciated.

I think I have isolated the source of this problem. It's the Pitstop Professional 9 plug in. I un-installed this, and everything opens quicker than greased lightning. I re-installed it and it's back to slowsville.
Unfortunately Pitstop is essential to my workflow.
Until recently I did my pre-press on a Mac G5 with Acrobat Pro 7 and Pitstop 6.5. I never had this problem with slow file opening. But it seems that the delays would occur when I used the plug-in with large complex files.. So it would open files as fast as you'd expect from an elderly machine. But starting to use Pitstop would result in a prolonged period of staring at a spinning beachball.
I wonder is there any way to stop the Pitstop plug-in from initializing until it is used? So the plug-in stays inert until you select the tool from from the menus.
