Connect to Server freezes AFP client and hangs Finder

I have a brand new iMac core2duo (2GB RAM) and an older G4 iMac. Machines are running 10.4.8 (all updates applied) and 10.4.7 respectively. They're connected via Ethernet on my home network through a router.
When I first set up the Intel Mac I had no problems connecting to the G4 via Connect to Server. I could log in and mount remote volumes, etc. Now, after about a week of use, the Intel Mac AFP client hung after I logged in to the G4 and selected the remote volume to mount. The only way to cancel the operation was to Force Quit the process. Activity Monitor indicated the application as "not responding." This happened three times. I was able to connect to the Intel machine from the G4 without problem.
After two or three attempts at this, I tried simply connecting through the Network icon in a Finder window. This hung the Finder at pretty much the same point as before (after logging in and selecting a volume to access). After force quitting the Finder, the frozen window closed. However, I then decided to restart the Intel Mac "for the **** of it" to see if it would solve the AFP problem. After clicking Restart, the Desktop was cleared and the machine froze. (No kernel panic, just an empty Finder desktop with my wallpaper and a mouse cursor). I was forced to physically shut down and restart the machine.
I'd very much like to know why this is happening on a brand new machine with very little software and how to resolve it. In general both machines are manually put to sleep at night, they are not shut down.

Unlike those above, I've had the alternate problem. After being connected to a newtork share (SAMBA off an Intel MacMini) all day, I try to eject the network drive so I can go home for the night. End result is that the drive won't eject and after another try the finder hangs completely. Can't force quit...just spinning BBOD.
I have seen this behavior in 10.4.8 (not in 10.4.7) on both a 4 year old TiBook and a brand-spanking new MacBookPro 15.4". It's disturbing, because the same problem happens when you sleep your machine and wake it up elsehwere.....the finder hangs for a while trying to find the network share.
Thoughts?

  • "Connect to server" inserts "afp://" in front of "vnc://"? 10.4.11

Hi All: I have a macbook running 10.4.11 connecting to the internet through a wireless router. I'm trying to connect to a vnc server in a remote location. When I go to "connect to server" and enter:
    vnc://[ip address]
the "connecting to server" window pops up, but I see in there "connecting to afp://vnc//[ip address]"
where it seems to be inserting "afp://" in front of what I entered, and stripping out the colon after "vnc"
    What am I doing wrong?

Hi BD: I'm not sure I understand all your questions...let me clarify the topology.
The system I'm trying to connect to has a VNC server running on it and is accessible through a public IP. I'm trying to connect to that system across the 'net from my laptop. I don't have access to that system, but their IT guy assures me people are able to connect to it remotely and screen share.
Also, I'm able to connect to the remote computer using AFP...it's just VNC that's not connecting.
My laptop is on a local subnet connecting through a WAP that connects to a DSL router. I have not configured any special PAT or forwarding on my end that would be messing with an outgoing VNC connection. Again, I'm trying to connect as a client to a remote VNC server so I can share the screen of the server (I'm pretty sure the "server" is just a Mac with sharing enabled).

  • How to connect sql server using oracle Client

    Hi,
I am working in oracle9i and windows os 32 bit.
I need to connect SQL server 2000 from my oracle client..
I heard about heterogeneous connectivity ...
Please expalin me the steps what to add and how to connect the sql server...
    Regs....

Are you trying to connect to SQL Server from your Oracle database (i.e. create a database link in Oracle to SQL Server)? Or are you trying to connect to SQL Server using your Oracle client software (i.e. SQL*Plus)?
The former just requires Heterogeneous Services with Generic Connectivity. The latter is functionality that has been depricated and probably no longer works in your environment.

  • Connection Errors between Oracle 8 Client and Oracle 8.1.6 EE

Our current application has been developed using PowerBuilder 6.5 and Oracle 8.1.5. Since PB 6.5 does not have a "native driver" for 8.1.5, we have used their driver for Oracle 8.0.5 for Net8 connectivity to the server. Everything works fine.
Recently, I downloaded the current version of Oracle 8.1.6 EE from Technet to try out the compatibilty of our software with the next version of 8I, it failed. The error seems to be somewhere between the 8.0.5 Oracle Client Software and the downloaded Oracle 8.1.6 EE Server software. Some how we have lost the ability to declare cursors. I tried declaring a cursor in a procedure through SQL*Plus and it failed their as well. I have even tried the Oracle 8.0.6 Client, with same results.
Has anyone seen this? If so, what should I do?
    Thanks,
    Jason

Two-task common errors are generally RDBMS related issues, but could be caused by a problem with SQL*Net, or an application (i.e. Pro*C).
    ORA-03106
======== Possible reasons for the ORA-03106 errors include:
    1. Incompatibilities between the client application and the RDBMS server.
For example, version incompatibilities, or a client trying to use a feature not supported by the database kernel.
    2. When using database links or gateways.
    3. Network or SQL*Net problems.
    4. Corruptions.
    5. PL/SQL - language related.

  • Connecting To Server Via AFP

My challenge is with connecting to a server using AFP.  I am receiving an error message "There was a problem connecting to the server...the server may not exist..."
I am traveling and on a wireless network.  I tried pinging the IP Address of the server and get a "timed-out" response.  I also tried pinging Google and receive the same timed-out message.  The odd thing is that I can get to the Internet and get from site to site.
If I switch to an AirCard, I'm able to connect to the server using AFP.
Any suggestions to resolve this on the wireless network would be appreciated,
    John

The challenge I encountered was related to the router settings.  After a tweak or two, I was able to connect.

  • Connect to Server doesn't respond and Network server aliases don't work

Hello. I have a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.9. Up until a few days ago, it was working fine to connect to a share on a PowerMac G5 10.3.9. Now I can't connect using Connect to Server afp://ipaddress - I click on the blue Connect button but nothing happens. If I try to connect using Finder -> Network and the G5 alias, I get the "alias could not be opened" error and I can't delete the alias, and Fixing the alias does nothing either.
I have an Intel iMac 10.4.9 that connects fine to the G5 share, and a MacBook Core 2 Duo 10.4.9 that also connects fine to the G5.
On the Powerbook G4, I've tried repairing disk permissions and also repaired the disk, but it hasn't fixed the problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Might try clearing some Caches... I prefer AppleJack for this...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
Also, or instead, might try trashing these...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkConfig.plist
Reboot... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.

  • I need code example for server act as client and vice versa

    Hi all,
I want code example for performing both server and clients using RMI. I mean Server will act as client and client will act as server. So a single program will act as both client and server .
Please give example, it will helpful to complete my project. I am struggling in this stage. Its like peer to peer action.
    Thanks & Regards

    1. The tutorial shows you how to do cleint/server.
    2. Search on the topic "callback" to see how cleint and server roles can be reversed.

  • Server 4.0: Client and Computer Authentication

Hello.  In Active Directory we have Domain Controllers.  Is there any way I can make the Mac OS Server the authentication and authorization server for all Macs on a remote LAN.  -Rather than installing another DC.  At this time they're authenticating via WAN VLAN tunnel to one of our DCs.
    Thanks in advance!

If you're using only OD you can set up a master OD and have other MOSX servers bound to that master OD (or it's replicas). The same thing should be possible to do by binding your MOSX server(s) to AD and then having clients authenticating towards the server(s) with AD accounts. It is really pesky to have to sets of users. We are at a transfer state from OD to AD and, well, it's a little messy so I definitely prefer having one user directory.
If you have the possibility to set up a test server (virtualised is wonderful with snapshots and everything, could be possible to do on your own desktop/laptop even, VMWare/ESXi only) I would definitely try to bind the server(s) to AD if that's already existing and see if it works as expected before setting up another user directory.

  • ACE: Initiate connections from server vlan to client

With my ACE, I'm trying to initiate connection from server to client side. This connection is refused by ACE (ACE sends a RST for this connection). I think I missing something.
From client to servers off course I have no problem. Thanks in advace for your help.

You need an inbound access-list for traffic to be passed. Probably you do have an inbound access-list on the client vlan but not on the server vlan ?

  • 15-minute restarts and hanging finder

Help!  I've been trying all the solutions I can find in these and other boards and so far nothing has worked.
Yesterday, while I had several applications open, I right-clicked on an image file to open it with Photoshop and my whole system froze (although the audio for a YouTube video kept playing in the background, even though the picture hung.)  Now my system is taking approximately 15 minutes to restart and the finder is hanging for up to 5 or 10 minutes at a time for most mouse clicks.
I'm running 10.6.8 on a Mac Mini.  A few days an Excel file corrupted which I think might have been the first sign that something was wrong.  Every time I tried to click on the file the whole system would hang.
Here's what I've tried to so far:
Trashed Google Drive (by dragging the application into the trash)
    Trashed com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    Trashed com.apple.finder.plist
    Repaired permissions multiple times
Booted in safe mode (in which the finder would still hang)
Ran several functions in Spring Cleaning 10 - file checker, launch services rebuilder, permissions fixer, system cache cleaner
Ran a couple of terminal commands that I found in a discussion about freezing finders
The restart sequence goes like this:
    Choose restart from menu
The "Are you sure" window comes up but the one minute timer is stalled and it takes several minutes to be able to click on "Restart"
All of the desktop goes away except the background image, which hangs for about two minutes.
    There is a chime
The apple screen appears for approximately 2.5 minutes
A blank white screen appears for approximately 2 minutes
A blank blue screen appears for approximately 3 minutes
A blank black screen appears for approximately 2.5 minutes
Another blank blue screen appears for about 1.5 minutes
The desktop background shows up without icons for approximately 1 minute
The desktop icons appear but are not function for another 1.5 minutes or so.
I've tried everything I can think of and desperately need help!  I've got a backup from a couple days ago, but my Mac Mini shipped without installation discs, so it's going to be a couple days before I can get a friends in the event that I need to reformat.  I'd really like to not have to do that if possible.
    Thanks in advance!!!

The (gray) discs that come with a Mac will only boot that type of Mac, and those built around the same time:
Unless your friend has the same model and build period, you need either a Retail Install disc (you can get one from the online Apple Store for $19.99) at http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard:
Or call AppleCare, give them your Mac's serial number, and they can send a replacement set of original discs (including iLife apps and the Apple Hardware Test for your Mac) for a nominal fee.

  • FTP access via "Connect to Server. . ." function in Finder

How do I connect to a server using the "Connect to Server. . ." function in Mac OS X Finder?
Currently, in Finder, I click on "Go", "Connect to Server. . .", enter "ftp://[email protected]" and click on connect. I then enter my user name and password, but the application fails to connect. I've done it before, but am now having problems. Any thoughts?
Also, I do not want to install a third party ftp program. I know I don't need to install a third party application because I've successfully connected in the past, but have forgotten how to do so.

Are you aware that the Finder's ftp is Read Only, and that CyberDuck is Free?
Try turning off the Firewall on both to see if that's the problem.

  • Clients connected to server freeze after while

We have a XServe an several Mac and Linux clients. The xserve mainly hosts the user directories (via afp for Mac- and NFS for Linux-Clients). In addition web-services and the iCal-server is running.
Everything was running fine for weeks. But recently I encountered a strange problem:
After working on a mobile account for a while (on a MacBook Pro) the machine becomes totally unresponsive (Beach-Ball-Everywhere). The Dock sooner or later always completely freezes. If I try to start an application like Terminal.app from the Dock (before it got frozen) then the icon gets an question-mark. All this happens on different user accounts.
This is completely strange as everything was working fine for quite some time. I am most interested in two things:
    1) has anyone encountered any similar symptoms?
    2) I am not quite sure, but maybe the trouble started after I added a SSL Certificate (but that's just an assumption)

Of course I can not say for sure that it is no hardware defect but honestly I do not think so. Right after I posted my problem I disabled SSL for Open Directory (via ServerAdmin). So far everything works fine. So could be that this was the source for the problem?
At the moment I don't see an alternative for searching the problem by trial and error. My biggest hope is to find somebody with a similar problem.

  • Server Connections Interrupted - Mountain Lion, latest client and server upgrade

    Hello,
I have seen several errors of a similar kind with no definite fix anywhere on here, so I thought I would post this.
We are running a network with a Mountain Lion Server on a Mac Mini, connected to a router for internet access and connected to a local network for client computers. All the clients are running the latest version of Mac OS X Mountain Lion and are connecting to remote home directories on the server. They also use several group directories.
As of late, they have been getting the message: "Server Connections Interrupted. Ignore / Disconnect all" concerning their group volumes.
I haven't been able to find anything in the logs indicating why this happens, or how to fix it, or why it started appearing.
What have people experienced out there? It appears on all sorts of user accounts, on different computers in different areas of the workplace.
    / Z.

    Additional data:
There is no WIFI enabled on the network, all is networked using ethernet.
There's a Time Capsule on the Server, which backs up the server data regularly. This seems to be connected one way or another from the threads I've read, but those are from aprox. two years ago while this started happening recently.

  • Tiger server, Snow Leopard Client and Illustrator CS4

We have a strange problem happening with the one Snow Leopard client we have accessing our Tiger server. In certain directories (not in all) if the user opens an Illustrator CS4 file, makes changes and goes to save the file they get the message that the file is either locked or in use by another user (it is not). This does not happen with any other kind of file in that same directory. The server is connect to AD so the user accounts come from the AD but on this machine we have the same problem regardless of the user account used to mount the server volume. It also doesn't matter if I use a local account on the server to mount instead of AD. I have the same problem if I connect via SMB instead of AFP. Other machines (Leopard) can work on these files with no problems.
A couple of other bits of information which might be useful. If the user opens the file, does a save as to the same name and same folder and replaces the original they can work on the file and save it with no problems. As soon as they close the file and reopen it they have the problem again. Also, if they run into the problem, close all programs on the computer and try to unmount the server volume they get the message that the volume is in use and cannot be ejected. I have checked and there are no invisible files being created in the directory where this file resides.
What is strange is that the problem does not happen in all directories although when it happens it is repeatable in that directory. Happens every time. I have tried changing the name of the folder to something simple and it still happens.
Any suggestions on where to go with this problem??

No progress yet. Have tried a lot of things with preferences on the server. I have confirmed with another snow leopard machine that this is not related to the machine in any way. I have not yet had a chance to test it on another Tiger server but given the fact that you are seeing it as well I would say there is a problem with the two operating systems cooperating.
As I said, I do have a temporary workaround. If you do a save as with the document, choose to overrite the original it works and then lets you continue to work on that file and save for that session. After you close the file and reopen the problem returns but at least for that session you are fine.
