Connect to Windows7 created ad-hoc network

Hi guys,
I'm facing the following situation: at the place where I am now to internet connection is set up by a dial application which is, of course, windows only. I have only linux on my laptop, but my girlfriend has windows 7, so she can connect to the net. What I tried to do is to set up an ad-hoc wireless connection on hers laptop and to connect to it from my linux box. Of course I didn't succeded. I see the created wireless network, but can't connect to it. I tried different encriptions too, no difference. Does anybody have some experience with internet sharing from windows to linux? How can I set it up?
I can use command line too, I'm familiar with wireless-tools.
Thank you!

Did you check the article I linked to?
What's the output of iwconfig wlan0? Change wlan0 to the proper interface if necessary.

  • Creating ad-hoc network for iTouch in XP

Has anyone been able to sucessfully create an ad-hoc network within Windows XP and get there iPod touch online with it? (***** that you can't import certificates on the iTouch yet...)

    Ok, a few points.
    1) I'm not sure if you are using just your laptop and the iPod. If so you will need another computer to keep the network alive. If you don't add another computer the network will stay alive for a short period of time which will allow you to at least use it for a little while.
    2) Do you have Internet connection sharing enabled in windows? Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click your Internet connection -> Click the 'Advanced' Tab up top -> And check the box 'Allow other users to connect through this computer's Internet connection'
    3) If you have done the above or are sure your internet connection is being shared ie. Another device (other than the device directly connected to the Internet) on the network can use the Internet. Ensure that the computer connected directly to the Internet has the IP address 192.168.0.1
To check this go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click your WIRELESS network connection.
In the area below "This connection uses the following items:" scroll down to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", select it and hit properties.
Ensure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is NOT checked. Enter the IP address 192.168.0.1 if it is not already entered. Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0.
    Once you have done this.
On your iPod Touch go to Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Whatever your network is called (tap the blue arrow next to this)
    Under IP Address click "Static"
Enter and IP Address not used on your network. eg. "192.168.0.2" DON'T USE "192.168.0.1" as we just used it for the computer connected to the Internet!
    Subnet mask is "255.255.255.0"
Router is "192.168.0.1" - Yes I know you don't have a router but the computer connecting to the Internet is acting as one. If you wish you can also enter DNS as "192.168.0.1". I have but it shouldn't really have any impact.
You're Internet should now work assuming you don't have a proxy enabled, which I seriously doubt you would. If you do then enable HTTP Proxy below where you just entered your IP address and enter your proxy username and password.
    Everything should work now.

  • [Problem] Issue to create Ad-Hoc Network for iPad via MacBook

    Hello everyone,
I have a white MacBook (2007) and an iPad 2.
I am at a hotel which only has a cable Internet access.
I would like to create an Ad-Hoc Network with my MacBook to use the iPads WiFi.
I was able to create the Ad-Hoc Network via the Internet-Sharing in the MacBook Settings, but as soon as I switch on the Sharing, neither the MacBook Internet nor the iPad Internet are working (I also tried it with my not jailbroken iPhone 3GS, same result). When I switch off the WiFi from my MacBook, at least I can use the Internet via cable.
Is it possible that the Internet is not strong enough to use it with 2 devices. I forgot my MacBook charger, does this maybe a reason that it is not working, because the MacBook doesn't have enough power?
What else can be a reason.
I heard it should be quiet easy to create an Ad-Hoc connection, but now I wonder why it is not working.
    I would appreaciate any help.
If you need more information, please let me know.
    Thank you in advance.

But this doesn't mention at all how to connect iphones, ipods and ipads.
Your original post didn't mention those. But now it sounds like your wireless access point is down. That's a separate issue. Unless you have a specific need for an ad-hoc network, I suggest you fix your WAP and connect all the devices to it.

  • Connecting to an ipv6 ad-hoc network

    hello
I am tryin to connect to an ad-hoc network with the iPad (iOS 4.2). As far as I know, from iOS 4.2, the iPad should be ipv6 capable. As my ad-hoc network is an ipv6 net, I wa pretty happy. However, when I connect to the ad-hoc net, it doesn't seem to be possible to enter a static ipv6 address. At least the input window for the address, netmask etc. looks exactly the same as if I would configure it for ipv4 and, as soon as I enter an IPv6 address and netmask and go back to the setting - then return, the static address is lost and the connection is automatically switched back to DHCP (eventhough there is no dhcp on the ad-hoc network).
Does anybody encounter similar issues? Some help would be really great...

    Hi @Handrlica,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you are wondering how to connect your HP Officejet Pro 8620 to an existing ad-hoc network. I am happy to look into this for you!
This printer does not have ad-hoc capability. However it does have these options of connecting: Wireless, Wireless Direct (similar to ad-hoc), Ethernet, and NFC.
I would take a look at connecting through either Wireless or Wireless Direct. Please see the following guides:

For future reference, here is your printer's specifications, and user guide.

  • Can not create ad-hoc network

I am trying to create an ad-hoc network on my macbook pro 15.4" 1.5 gb of ram 1.83ghz first-gen and just upgraded to leopard
I am trying to create a network for internet sharing and I don't have it turned on internet sharing and then It says there is an error setting up a ad-hoc network and I have tried all the channels and nothing works help please thank you

I might have the answer. I had the same problem. Try changing the default name of the network to something short without an apostrophe. When I did that, I was able to create the network.
Note: my name is long and that is the name my computer has for me, so the default network name on mine was a mile long and full of punctuation.
Note: The first 20 or so times I tried to create the network, it wouldn't let me change the name, which I was going to change just for a laugh as opposed to doing it to not get the error message.
Maybe a coincidence and maybe not. Good Luck.

  • IPhone OS3 and Wireless Ad-Hoc Networking (Vista)

I used to use my laptop (running Vista) to create a Wireless ad-hoc network. I then used to connect to this wireless ad-hoc network using my iPhone nd surf the net that way...
Now after upgrading to OS 3 i do the same thing... but when i connect to the wireless netwrok with the iPhone... it disconnects my laptop computer from the internet... but the iphone still manages to get internet perfectly.
Anyone having this problem... or better yet know how to fix it?

I was kinda figuring that, that was the impression I've been getting after hours and hours of research. What I did find was that you can use Applescript to create an ad-hoc network, and that Applescript can be run from a Java program. Once that network is established, would it be feasible for Java to it to send packets to another machine?

  • Ios7 can't connect to wifi ad-hoc network

    Hi,
I have a problem connecting my iPhone 4S to the ad-hoc wifi connection my macbook creates when "sharing" the ethernet internet connection through wifi, with iOS6 it worked flawlessy. I have no problems connecting in wifi to my router though.
Anyone experienced that? Could you try?
    Thank you

For what it's worth, I contacted the support team at Avatron (the developer of Air Display) and asked whether they had any workarounds. Here's what they came up with:
Thanks for contacting us at Avatron support about the issues that you've been seeing when connecting via an ad hoc network. I was unaware of this problem but after doing some testing this morning it seems to happen with one of our iOS 7 iPad 2s as well.
While this definitely seems like something that Apple needs to address, I was able to get Air Display working over the ad-hoc network if I disabled internet sharing from the Mac System Preferences > Sharing pane. Obviously the drawback of this is that the iPad will no longer be connected to the internet when you are using Air Display in this manner.
Please let me know if this is able to serve as a temporary workaround while Apple investigates the problem.
    Cheers,
    Aaron

    Avatron Software, Inc.
Clearly this is not a full fix as I can't access the internet when connected to my ad-hoc network, but at least I got Air Display running.
Their reply also suggests that this isn't a blanket issue covering all devices running iOS7, as only "one of [their] iOS 7 iPad 2s" was having the same problem.

  • Can I create a portable ad-hoc network between an iPad and other wireless devices?

I have a iPad that uses a third-part app to connect to and read data from a wireless hard drive.  This works great in my house over my local network.   What I want to do is create an ad-hoc network to use in my car or other remote site to basically just allow the wireless connection between the two devices, with no internet connection.   I have used an ad-hoc network in the past to sync data between my iPad and my iMac, so theoretically it should be possible, but I can't seem to find out how to do it using the iPad to create the network.  Is there a support article discussing this?   Has anyone out there tried doing this?   Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but I must not have made myself clear.  I'm not looking for internet or 3G service.  All I want is a temporary network to share data over.  I have lots of movies and videos stored on a wireless hard drive and I just want to be able to access them in the car while on trips or on vacation.  It works in my house even when we lose our internet connection.  The cable modem is off-line and the Airport Extreme light glows orange, but the wireless network still works.  I guess that I could set up an iPhone as a hotspot and pay extra for a service I would only need sporadically, but I'm hoping that there is an alternative.

  • Can't connect ad-hoc network after IOS 8.2 update

    Hi,
This is my first post on Apple Discussion so please ignore grammatically and other mistakes if i made.
I am using iPhone 5S 32 GB factory unlocked and working very well in INDIAN network.  I use to connect ad-hoc network created on my Window 7 Desktop via Wifi Surf-n-share Belkin USB.  It is working very well and connected always until i updated IOS 8.2.
After IOS 8.2 updates, iphone couldn't connect ad-hoc network.
Is there any bug for this issue or security update.??
    Help would be really appreciated.
    Awaiting some good response.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi abidmomin,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It appears that after updating your iPhone to iOS 8.2, you're not able to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
I recommend starting with the tips in this article to troubleshoot the situation:

  • I have Fios. I have the TC connected via ethernet to the Fios router. TC WAN port ethernet to Fios Lan port. Then I just have the TC create a wireless network that is different than the Fios wireless network. How do I set up an Airport Extreme to the TC?

The Airport Extreme is a 4th Gen unit. I just want to keep the TC wireless name to go further through my house.

The Ethernet connection will be from one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme.
Then you can use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup to configure the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Click the Wireless tab located just below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network (Not "extend a wireless network" as many users incorrectly think)
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your TC network
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the TC network
Wireless Password = Same setting as the TC network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and restart the entire network
Computers on the TC network will now be able to move to the area where the AirPort Extreme is located and not have to "switch" networks. This is known as a "roaming" network.

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.

  • How can I get an ad hoc network to remain when I restart the device? I have to re-create it everytimerestart

We use mac mini's in various mobile applications and its impossible to create an adhoc network and have it automatically sign back on with it when we restart or turn the mac mini back on. We use them in airplanes and the unit does not stay powered once the airplne finishes its trip. So we hae to train the pilots to turn it on and setup a new network and its very pesty. Any thoughts on how to fix this. We have already tried to create a new location and mive thr adhoc network to the top of the heirarchy list but it still wont work.
    Thanks

Hmmm - I may be misreading your problem, but try this.
Create the network. When you have the computer connected to the "server" computer, make an alias of the server computer and place it on the desktop. You can try putting the alias into the computer account "log in" items.
Restart. The computer should execute the log in items and join the network if its available.
