Connect Windows 2000 to Mac Mini Server

Hi all,
I just got my new mini server and trying to setup the network for local and overseas staffs to access the files in the server. I wonder if anyone can tell me how to setup on Windows 2000 and Windows vista.
We have static IP address and all our macbook pro laptops are running fine, except Windows laptops.
Looking forward to any reply. Thanks a lot.

Servers and server-oriented networks expect substantially more knowledge of the administrator. The Apple servers are among the easiest I've encountered, but they're still (far) more involved than running a client box.
You need local DNS services. Mac OS X Server expects that.
You need a server-grade firewall. With TC, you have a home-user widget with port-forwarding. A server-grade firewall typically offers programmable pass-through, (for this case) VPN end-point and various other features depending on your current and planned usage. Anti-malware and anti-spam and other defenses can be available. Free (open-source) and commercial firewall options exist.
You need a business-class tier of service with your ISP, as a residential tier can and variously will be blocked by the ISP.
Everything that's not behind a firewall or a VPN will be directly attacked. The servers I administer get attacked quite frequently, as do the external firewalls. Getting breached stinks.
My usual approach here would be a VPN from the remote box into your server-grade Firewall (which also handles NAT and some other issues), and (via the VPN) the remote client (Windows or Mac or Linux or whatever) then appears to be directly connected to your local LAN.
Reading material [private (on-LAN) DNS services|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436], [public (external) DNS services|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1594], [firewalls and networking|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/275], and most definitely read the [Apple Documentation|http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/documentation.html].
And while no offense is intended, it's going to be fastest to call in somebody to set this up, and as an escalation path for your organization. You probably have a business to run and customers to deal with, and networks and network security and VPN setup and such aren't something you probably want to spend your own time on; they're something you can out-source.

  • Windows 7 and Mac Mini Server not connecting

I'm running a small design studio in Central Asia. For four years we've had a Mac Mini Server (Snow Leopard/Lion), working with three Macs, and two PCs (Windows XP) connecting, sharing files and accessing accounting software without any issues.
Due to Windows XP being discontinued we upgraded the PCs to Windows 7 Ultimate (it was the best that was available legally locally). The Windows machines both continued to connect to the server, although getting it to work initially was harder than with XP.
Our Mac Mini Server showed signs of dying, so this week we purchased a new Mac Mini Server with Mavericks (10.9.3). The macs in the office can see it fine, however the Windows 7 machines are unable to see the server on the network or access using the smb path. They can access the old server using smb, however in the network control panel, the old server is also invisible.
The server has SMB/AFP enabled. The Windows 7 machines are set to recognise networks and supposedly therefore to see others. They are failing to do either. It seems like both MS and Apple changed the way they communicate pretty significantly.
How can I get the Windows 7 machine talking with the new Mac Mini Server?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Richard

The problem of the machines connecting seems to have solved itself today - with one small tweak to the setup.
I inserted an underscore (_) instead of spaces into the Mac Server name, and although the Windows 7 machines still can't see the server they can now connect using SMB.
I can't believe something so small kept me so flummoxed for so long....

  • Windows 7 on mac mini server and raid 1

I just purchased a 2011 mac mini server with the hopes of installing windows 7 alongside lion.  Then my goal was to have the two drives mirrored.  I successfully mirrored the two drives using disk utility and then proceeded to install lion.  This all went fine.  Imagine my shock when I loaded up bootcamp to see an error message describing it's inability to install windows on a raided system.  The thought hadn't even occured to me that this would be an issue.
I have searched through various forums and other places on the internet and haven't found a solution.  I am curious if I can get anyone with any experience in this area.  Is it possible to have mac and windows installed on a drive... and have that drive mirrored to the second drive... regardless of what os i'm booted into?
    Thanks for your help guys

The GUI version of Disk Utility is very limited in what sort of RAID configurations you can create. It will only allow you to have a single partition on the disk and to make a RAID using that.
Boot Camp requires creating additional partitions on the disk and hence it complaining.
There is a commandline version of Disk Utility called diskutility (duh!). It has far more options available. Details for this command can be obtained by typing man diskutility in Terminal.app.
It appears that in theory you might be able to do the following.
Start off with both disks not setup for RAID
Use Boot Camp to create the Windows partition. Repeat this on each disk.
Then in Terminal.app manually convert the boot Mac partition to a RAID using diskutil appleraid enable
Then add the matching partition on the second drive to make it a working mirror using diskutil appleraid add
Then in Terminal.app manually create a RAID for the Windows partition using both drives and use FAT32 as the format using diskutil appleraid create
Then boot and run the Windows installer and tell it to erase the Windows partition as NTFS
I cannot gurantee the above will work and you should obviously have backups if needed. Another option would be to have the Mac partition covered by RAID but not the Windows partition, this would result in three volumes one Mac RAIDed volume, and two other non RAIDed volumes even though you have two physical disks.

  • Dual boot Windows 7 on Mac Mini Server

I have a Mac Mini server (2012) with two 1tb harddrives. One has osx Mavericks installed and I have been using it for the past 5 months. The other is completely empty. I was wondering if i could partition the empty drive and install Windows 7 on it from a disc? will I have to put osx on the empty drive, or can I just boot into windows at startup by holding option? I would like to keep about 800gb of the extra drive to use for extra storage of mac files.
Thanks for any help/suggestions you may have!
    Elliot

You would think it would be possible to have one drive for OS X and the other for Windows but this is not (quite) the case. If you want the second drive to be as near as possible dedicated to Windows you need first to install or copy to it OS X including the BootCamp Utility. Run the Boot Camp utility and allocate the minimum amount of space to OS X and all the rest for Windows. Then as normal install Windows.
You could after you have got Windows installed erase the (small) Mac partition.
It is necessary to do it this was as the BootCamp Utility partitions the boot drive (and only the boot drive) in to a special scheme that makes it able to run Windows on a Mac.

  • Trouble connecting to MySQL on Mac mini server

Trying to connect to the MySQL server from a remote client. I have "allow network connections" checked, and a password set. When I try to connect from an admin computer, I am told
"Host 'macbookpro.domain.tld' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server"
The Server setup guide doesn't give much information for MySQL, besides how to turn it on.
    What am I missing?

I finally found out how to do this using the application Sequel Pro recommended by MrHoffman.
    The steps are basically.
    1. Start MySQL
    2. Install Sequal Pro on the server
    3. Launch Sequel Pro and connect
    4. From the Choose Database… pop-up, choose mysql
    5. Select user in the left sidebar and Content from the Toolbar
    6. Select the root user in this table and click the duplicate button below the table (looks like 2 plus signs)
    7. Change the "host" field to be something like 192.168.1.%, where the first three octets are the same as your local network. The % is a wild card that allows a connection from any client on the mentioned network.
    8. Stop the MySQL service.
    9. Start the MySQL service.
    10. Install Sequel Pro on your client system and connect.

  • Mac Mini Server VPN-Window 7 client

    Hi,
The VPN connection from MacBookPro to Mac Mini Server (2011 with Mountain Lion 10.8.2) VPN works like magic. But, I never had any luck with any of Windows 7 laptops. Could any one take me to a good link to the Windows 7 VPN setup instruction?
Thank you so much in advance for your time reading this.
    Best,
    Michael

    Heh Michael
I got this working using the settings in the screenshots below. I know I had a heck of a time trying to make it work but it does using these for me. Sometimes on the first connection it rejects the credentials, but on the second time it connects - no idea why. Hope this helps:

  • How do I connect a PC running Windows 7 Enterprise to the Mac Mini Server?

    Hello!
I have a brand new iMac 27" with a PC partition on it. The PC side runs on Windows 7 Enterprise. My husband has a PC with Windows XP on it.
The brand new Mac Mini Server works fine for our macs, but the PCs are unable to connect. How do I get the PCs to see and connect to the Mini Mac Server?
    Bente Mc

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & Windows, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
    The Forums are at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology. Here is a link;

  • How can I set-up my mac mini server to be a central file server for my windows boxes (they don't see the mac on the network), and how do I set-up a central iTunes server so that all my devices sync to the mac mini?

I am looking for step by step instructions to configure my mac mini server to support the following:
    1. Central itunes server for all my devices (ipad, ipod, iphone, etc.)
    2. Central file server so that my windows devices can save and retrieve data from the central system (the mac does not show up in the network for the windows systems - all running windows XP or 7)
    Thanks,
    Keith

You will need to enable file sharing in System Preferences
as well as setting up sharing and permissions for the
directories that you want shared.  You may also want to
setup a non-administrative user or allow limited guest
access.  The user would require entering a user name and
password to make the connection, but would allow remotes
to change files, if set up tat way.
As for serving iTunes media, better to post in the iTunes forum.

  • Is it possible to install and run Windows Server 2008 on a Mac Mini Server in a Virtual Machine software like Parallels

I am wondering if it is possible to install and run Windows Server 2008 on a Mac Mini Server as a VM as my main application uses Windows VisualBasic and Fox Pro and requires a Static IP to connect to it, My other offices connects to Windows Server via RDP.
Basically I am researching a Server for the same purpose and since Mac Mini and OsX both are robust in nature it can fit the bill if every thing work fine.
    Thanks

    From the Parallels website:
    32-bit Operating Systems
Windows 8 with: Windows 8, 8.1 (when available)
    Windows 7 SP1
    Windows Vista SP0, SP1, SP2
    Windows Server 2008 R2, SP2, SP1, SP0
    64-bit Operating Systems
    Windows 8
    Windows 7 SP1
    Windows Vista SP0, SP1, SP2
    Windows Server 2012
    Windows Server 2008 R2, SP2, SP1, SP0
I do suggest that you upgrade RAM to at least 8gig
    if you haven't already.
FWIW, I currently use Win8/64 bit with Parallels on a 2011 Mini Server
using the windows environment for engineering applications and have
had no issues.  I am running Mountain Lion but do not have the
    Server app installed.

  • Help Setting up Mac Mini Server for Printer/File Sharing to Windows comp.

Hi, so in our office, we decided only to switch half of the office to macs for budgetary reasons. We purchased the mac mini server to replace the 5,000 year old one and have also gotten to macbooks and a mac mini. My other two co-workers unfortunately still are using two windows vista machines. We have important documents on the server hard drive and they also need our OLD ACT! database to access from it and I have not been able to get them to access the hard drive. Can someone please walk me through these steps? Also, ideally we want to be able to access this servers hard drive when we are out of the office and edit word documents and such, but I also have not been able to do that or make that work. Any help in these areas would be greatly appreciated!

If you use a different login name for the network account to your existing local account then the local account will not be affected. You might want to transfer the contents of your existing local account to the new network account. To do this you could try the following
    Create new network account
    Login using old local account
Now while logged in using old local account - connect to the File Server
    Enter the new login details
It should hopefully list the Share that stores your new network account, complete the connection
You should now have the Share mounted, copy the contents of your local account to the corresponding location in your new network account
Note: The Library folder in your home directory contains all your settings
Once complete logout of the old local account
Try logging in to the new account
In terms of limitations, it is going to be slower than a local account because it has to go across the network, and some badly written applications may have some issues but most will be fine.
At this stage your local account has not yet been deleted so if you have problems you can revert to it.

  • Finder: connecting iMac to Mac Mini server

    Hello,
When I connect in the Finder to the Mac Mini Server (Snow Leopard Server), it takes on our iMac Snow Leopard 90 seconds on a fixed 1 Gbps network.
Why does it take so long ?
Connecting our iMac with Leopard takes only a few seconds.
    Thanks,
    Hubert

    Yes.
I just tried to connect in the finder to a Windows XP Pro PC. Before I could look at my watch, I had access to the Windows XP filesystem.
I tried it also with my MacBook to connect to the server in the finder. Here too, it takes only a few seconds.
I do not understand why it takes 90 seconds on the Snow Leopard iMac.

  • Mac Mini Server and Windows SBS

I am running an aging Dell server with SBS 2003 and wondered whether it would be possible to use one or perhaps two Mac Mini Servers for my needs.  I used to host my own Exchange on this server but I was running out of HD space and it was not easily upgradable so I opted to use Hosted Exchange and use the old server for two things: as a File Server and to run a databse that was written for us in MS SQL Server.  I access the SQL database via RDP from my Dell laptop (docked in the office and connected to two monitors with extended desktop).  I have long been a Mac user at home and have someone else working on my team now who uses a Macbook Pro.  He is currently not using the server at all, but it would make sense for him to be able to access some aspects of the File Server.  My question is whether I can replace this Dell Server with a Mac Mini Server but booting in Windows SBS 2008 or whatever the newer version is, assuming it can still run the old SQL Server database.  Would it be possible to use the same Mini Server as a File Server or better to use a separate one for that or perhaps some other solution for a File Server.  I would like things to be RAID so that I have backups which are required for compliance reasons.  I currently run a nightly backup of the data on teh File Server and the SQL database onto an external drive and also the same back up is done using iBackup as an offsite back up.  I need the developers of the SQL Server database to be able to remote in from their Windows machines in India for periodic updates and system maintenance.  I also would need to be able to access the same database from my laptop in the office, and I believe there are limits on the number of connections one can have with SBS.  I do have VPN access set up via my Sonicwall TZ210 router/firewall that enables me to access the Server if I am traveling with my laptop or am at home on my iMac (although that client has never worked properly) but currently our internet connection is too slow to make the VPN usable when I'm away from the office.
Thanks to anyone who can answer all or part of these questions.  Perhaps I should have one Mini Server for the SQL database and one as a File Server (or could that just be done with a network drive?  I'm not sure I really know the difference - I'm a solo act here, not a systems guy, so am feeling my way somewhat).

  • Please help. Can no longer connect to my Mac Mini Server

Up until two days ago, my iMacs were connecting to my Mac Mini Server normally. All of a sudden I could no longer transfer files without being prompted to type my password. Enter password and nothing happened, then got an error message stating that I don't have permission to do that. Now, a day later, no acces to my server. Has anyone ever experienced this? Can anyone please help? I've read the Mac mini booklet but doesn't have any troubleshooting info. Thanks in advance.

    Hello MrHoffman,
Thank you for the advice. I went into Terminal first and typed in your command and this is what resulted:

  • Mac mini server has suddenly stopped seeing one or the other bluetooth devices! Batteries have been changed and they will connect to an older Mac mini. Server will now only see one or the other but not both.

My Mac mini server has suddenly stopped seeing one or the other bluetooth devices, either the wireless keyboard or the mouse( both apple products) have tried new batteries, at first it was the mouse that stopped responding, but upon rebooting the computer now the keyboard will not respond and the mouse works. Both work fine on an older Mac mini that I hooked back up to check.

There is absolutely no reason why they should not bothe be able to connect to your WiFi network. The easiest place to start would be to reboot your router. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in again. I would also restart both the iPad and the iPhone.
