Connected but can't connect to internet? puzzling

After hours on the phone with support, I was left with a laptop that said wireless network connected yet I couldn't connect to a website. I took back first router and I am trying another. Help please?

If wireless network is connected correctly, then you can type following command on command prompt (cmd.exe) to check whether correct IP, netmask, gateway and DNS servers are configured or assigned to the laptop. If everything looks good, then you should be able to ping the router's LAN IP without problem.
ipconfig /all
Also ensure that there is Internet connection on router! You can check the Internet/WAN status on the router management website's status page.
If everything works well, but still fail to access website, then probably there is problem on your DNS servers to resolve the URL. You can then use the following free DNS servers from OpenDNS.com.

Thank you very much for your insight; I guess I had assummed that iPads/iPhones/iPods were here in Brazil and further assumed that the iTunes store would also be available.

  • Wifi says connected but can't connect to internet, email etc

my ipad wifi says it's connected but can't get internet, email etc.

Try unplugging your WiFi router for a few seconds.  Then reset the iPad network.  Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  You will need to reconnect to the WiFi.

  • Imac wi-fi, it says I have a connection but can't get any internet access

    Hi All,
Help please, just got a new iPad air and trying to use the Wi-Fi function on the iMac to access internet on the iPad. Used to be able to do this on previous tablet but now iMac won't wi-fi any of my devices- including new iPad. All devices and iMac say there is a connection but when I open internet apps it tells me there is no connection. Have reset iPad, turned wi-fi on/off, turned internet sharing on/off everything! Think the problem is the iMac, can anyone suggest a solution?
    Cheers

I have checked the network in the system preference. The Built-In-Ethernet has a green light beside it and says "Built-In-Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address (bunch of numbers). You are connected to the Internet via Built-In-Ethernet."
When I click on "Assist me" and then "Diagnostics", The Network Diagnostics screen pops up and Scans for a while. There's five tabs on the left. Built-In-Ethernet is green, Network Settings is Green, and ISP is green. After scanning for a while, the tab by Internet goes red and says Failed below it, and the tab by Server goes red and says Failed below it. Then it asks me "Have you ever used this computer to successfully connect to the internet?" I say yes, and then it asks for the network port configuration that I would like to use. I choose Built-In-Ethernet, and it scans for a while and tells me "This computer appears to have a working internet connection, but cannot find www.apple.com. You may have typed the address incorrectly.
My neighbor has a wireless network that is unsecured. I use it all the time on my ipod touch. My imac finds it, connects to it, but I still have the same problem. No browser or mail will work.

  • I have a connection, but can't get any internet or email

I have two macs. The new one suddenly won't open any internet pages or email. I can't use Safari or Firefox or my mail. The old G4 cube on the same cable modem is having no problems at all. I called my ISP, and everything is fine from their end, and they can see my IP address and it matches what they have, so all should be working. On the imac, it says I have an internet connection, gives me an IP address, and claims I'm connected. But when I open Safari or Firefox or my mail, I get nothing.
    Any suggestions?

  • WRT54GS Says I'm Connected, but can't connect to the Internet on my Laptop

I have a Linksys Router connected to my desktop (running XP) and a laptop (running Windows 2000), as well as a wireless printer.  I can get on the internet from my desktop, and my printer works fine.  However when I try to use my laptop I can't get on the internet.  I checked the status and everything is fine and everytime I check on "Find WLAN" it comes back and says you are successfully connected.  All this happened after I connected my laptop in a hotel I recently stayed at.  I am able to connect my laptop to any other unsecured sites, but not my secured site at home even though, again, it says I am successfully connected???  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • PC status reads connected, but can't connect to internet

I'm trying to connect my PC notebook to the Intel Mac with built in Airport. All systems seem to be on go; the signal strength on the Mac is at 100%, and the PC indicates the signal strength is very good, and the status reads connected. However, I can't connect to the internet on my PC.
The only indication of something troubling is the fact that the bubble next to AirPort is red in the Mac Network Status, but it indicates Airport is connected to the Computer-to-Computer network.
I have no idea what's wrong or how to get my PC to connect to the net, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

A computer to computer network can only be used for sharing files.
In order to share the internet you need to configure your Mac for internet sharing.
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
Share connection from built-in-ethernet via Airport.
This will mean your Mac is operating as a software base station.
However there is a potential issue why I wouldn't recommend doing this.
You won't be able to password protect the network as Windows clients can not authenticate with an encrypted software base station wireless network.
My recommendation would be to purchase another wireless router (say Airport Express) and connect that to the modem.

  • NEED HELP, WIRELESS CONNECTED BUT CAN NOT CONNECT TO INTERNET

SOMEWHAT COMPUTER CHALLENGEDMY LINKSYS SAYS IT IS CONNECTED WITH GOOD CONNECTION, BUT I CAN NOT GET MY WIRELESS COMPUTER TO CONNECT TO INTERNET, BY HARDWIRED COMPUTER CONNECTS FINE. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WERE I NEED TO START?

If you want some input from Linksys you have to contact Linksys support. This is a community forum...
    Check the following please:
    1. The computer wired to the router has internet access.
    2. On the computer wired open http://192.168.1.1/ in your browser. The username remains empty the default password is "admin". You may have changed the password during initial setup.
    3. Click on Wireless. Take a note of the Wireless Network Mode (mixed, b only, g only), the Wireless Network Name, Channel, and whether SSID broadcasts are enabled or not. If you still have the default network name "linksys", please change it to something unique and save the settings for this page.
    4. Next, click on Wireless Security and note the settings in this tab. It will be easier for troubleshooting if you post the current wireless settings noted.
    5. Now use the wireless computer (if it was the one wired to the router before, unplug it) and let it search for wireless networks. It should find a wireless network with the "Wireless Network Name" from 3. Try to connect to this network. If it asks for a passphrase or key, you have to enter the passphrase from 4. for WPA/WPA2. If you have WEP encryption in 4. you have to enter "Key 1" not the passphrase!
    6. If the connection fails please posts the exact error message you see.
    7. If the connection succeeds, try to open a URL in the internet, e.g. http://www.google.com/
    8. If it does not work open a command prompt window: Start - Run... - "cmd". Enter "ipconfig /all". Copy the output of this command into your next post.

  • Tried everything - says its connected, but can't access the internet

I have set up my wireless correctly. I went in and changed the name of SSID, and put a WEP password on it. I have the Default IP as 192.168.1.1 and starting IP at 192.168.1.100
I pinged 192.168.1.1 and it was fine. I then pinged the 4.2.2.2 and it timed out. So I downloaded the firmware and upgraded it successfully. Tried the ping again and got the same result. Also, when I connect the modem to the router, then the router to my computer the internet doesn't work. I have to bypass the router and just use the modem.
I have reset the router multiple times - it is hard to set up because in my building there seems to be someone else nearby who has a linksys router with the same default IP and they don't have a password or anything so it's hard to decide which one to connect to to set up.
either way, nothing has worked. Any ideas?!?!

Whats the model number of your Router. When you Hardwired you Computer to the Router you still dont have a access to internet. This means your router is not configured properly.
If your Internet Service Providor is Cable follow this link
If your Internet Service Providor is DSL follow this link
Here are the wireless settings which you can set on your router, Assuming you have a G series router, Follow this steps.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Computer is connected to network but can't connect to internet (Safari and Chrome), e-mail, App Store, ect.

My Macbook is connected to Wi-fi (four bars) but can't connect to the internet or any other services that requires internet. Other devices in my house have easily connected to the internet but every time I open Chrome it says: "This webpage is not available". What do I do?

Restart your internet modem and router and your Mac then try Safari etc.
If that doesn't help, try this DNS server ..
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Try a browser.
if that doesn't help, check the firewall.  System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall > Firewall Options

  • MY APPLE TV SHOWS THAT iT IS CONNECTED TO MY WIFI, BUT CAN NOT ACCESS THE INTERNET

my apple tv found my wifi, but can not access the internet??

I have been on the phone with Apple, done all of the trouble shooting they have recomended. When I attempt to connect it to the internet I get a message reading "your apple tv is connected to your wi-fi but cannot connect to the internet. I have plugged the modem right into the apple tv and it still won't work. This is the second device I've used. (apple gave me a new one after the first didn't work). I just thought there might be someone out there who had the same issue and knows how to resolve it.

  • TS1398 my wifi is showing connected but i am not getting internet access.  When  in the settings wifi settings  you can see the wheel or timer spinning but never a check mark like my other iPad.

my wifi is showing connected but i am not getting internet access.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Have WIFI connection but can't access Safari or App store, nothing.  Can anyone help??

I have just bought a iPad 2 WI-FI 16G today.  I have a full WI-FI connection but can't access the App store or Safari for any webpages, can anyone help?
    Thanks!!!!

Despite what you call, "a full WiFi connection", you may not really be connected to your WiFi network.
Your router may not have given your iPad a valid local network IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the ">" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power to the router for 30 seconds and then  restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPad (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

  • Not connecting but can see everything

I am running Windows Vista on a HP Laptop, Rogers cable internet with Cisco Linksys WRT31ON Router.
Everything has been running perfectly for over 8 months and then suddenly yesterday my wireless connection stopped functioning.  After a couple of attempts to reconnect (disable / reenable --> disconnect, acquire new IP address, reconnect) still nothing so I went back to the other room and connected to the LAN (wall to modem to router to laptop).. all better.  Noted that all the lights on the modem and router are fully lit and blinking as normal including the wireless strength.  Left the LAN in, restarted the computer .. still all good.  Disconnected the LAN and tried to reconnect the wireless.  I can see the wireless network, excellent strength but won't connect.  Error message is either connect to another network or wireless strength issue.  Disconnected the modem and router completely, walked away for 10 minutes reconnected everything to the LAN (wall to modem to router to laptop) ... all good.  Re-built the wireless network using the Cisco CD following all the steps.  Find wireless network in list, attempt to connect .. NOTHING!
Wash, rinse, repeat.  I did all that 3 times now.  Nothing.  ARRRGH.
I checked driver and have most up to date.  WAN toggle is on.  Wireless network connection in list of available networks and is showing excellent reception.  No changes to environment i.e. no new phones, tvs, etc.) in home.   My iPod Touch which I could also connect to previously can see new network connection with excellent strength but can't connect to it either.
ANY suggestions that you have would be MOST appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
Hopefully someone can offer some suggestions.

I would suggest you to readjust the wireless settings of the router.Login into the Linksys setup page and do the following steps...
    - Keep the Network Mode "Mixed"
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box.
    - Change the Channel Width to 20MHz only
    - Change the Channel to 11.
    - Recheck the wireless security.
