Connected to Airport Extreme but not internet

Yesterday after returning from work, all of a sudden I couldn't get any internet access through my airport extreme. I could connect to it and play music through "airtunes".
I looked at the settings of the airport BS and everything looked the way it should. After doing some trial and error I found out that I can get internet access through the airport BS when disabling "Distribute IP addresses".
However with Distribute IP addresses unchecked, I can't get iTunes to connect to the airport allowing me to play music wirelessly through my stereo.
Anyway, here's my setup:
Airport:
Wireless mode: Create a wireless Network (Home Router)
Wireless security: WPA2 personal
Channel: Automatic
Create a closed network (checked)
Mode: 802.11g Only
Internet:
Configure: Using DHCP
Network:
Distribute IP addresses (checked)
Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT) checked
USE 10.0.1.1 addressing
With that setup I can play music through airtunes but not get any internet connection.
Distribute IP addresses unchecked, I can get internet access but not play music through airtunes.
Anybody has an idea what could be wrong?

Yes. Disable that. Using that may make you feel good but the MAC addresses are easily discovered and cloned. Instead use WPA with a non-dictionary password.

  • Mac mini will connect to AirPort Extreme, but not internet

I just picked up an AirPort Extreme and hooked it up. My Mac mini connects to the base station with no problem, but will not connect to the Internet. Wen using the airport utility it is an amber light next to Internet.
I am able to get my iPhone and iPad to connect correctly. They both show that they are connected to the base station and the Internet. No sure what I need to do on my Mac to get it working properly.
I'm running 10.8.2 on my Mac. APX is 5th gen.

have you configured your Airport extreme to provide addresses via DHCP?
    If your WiFi settings are:
    IPv4 Address: 10.0.1.4
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 10.0.1.1
    DNS Server: 10.0.1.1
and WiFi is working with no problems
then having the same settings, just different IP address' last digit should work for Ethernet...
Have you connected the Ethernet cable to the computer as well as the Airport Extreme ?
Alternatively, you may change DNS server address to 8.8.8.8

  • Connects to Airport extreme but not to internet

Whenever I close my laptop and reopen, I lose internet connection thru the airport extreme and I won't get it back. It seems that I will have connection to the Airport Extreme, but not the internet.
Sometimes what fixes it is turning the airport off and then on again (sometimes multiple times). Usually restarting the computer fixes it (but not always).
What happens is this (viewing Sysprefs/network/airport/network status and "internet connect"): the internet connect will report connecting...then will announce "connected", but show no "time elapsed" at the same time the Net status will read "airport is connected to ..network...with it's own IP address and may or may not be connected to the internet" And I won't be.
Then, when it starts working again (after the abovementioned turning off/on) it will start counting time elapsed, then in Net Status it will say "airport connected to ..network. you are connected to the internet via airport."
Also, whenever I use "internet connect" to turn the airport off, when I turn it back on again I will not have internet access, just the messages I list above. The "strenth meter" will say my signal is good (which it should be) and it says I am connected but doesn't show "elapsed time" nor will I have actual internet access.
Again, restarting the computer will usually work (less often, logging out then back in).
Another strange symptom-- When I hit the "disconnect" button under the airport section of "internet connect" it disconnects, then reconnects immediately. When I hit the disconnect button w/ in the Sysprefs/network/airport...etc, it does nothing but bring to the front window the "internet connect" window. So the only way to "disconnect" is to turn off the airport (which results in the above problem).
Side note--I am in the habit of turning off the airport (not the base, but from the computer) when I don't plan on using it for security-- am I being excessively paranoid? I do have my firewall in operation. Should I just leave it (being the airport) on all the time (in your humble opinion?
Sorry if this makes no sense or rambles, it is now 5:30 am and She Who Must Be Obeyed will be getting up in about an hour wanting to know if I fixed the computer yet. I'm tired.
    Thank you in advance.

  • IPhone 6 Plus connects to Airport Extreme but not the internet

Light on my Airport Extreme is green and the Airport Utility on the iPhone 6 Plus shows that it's connected to the Airport, but not the internet.  What the strange this is, I am still getting email and message notifications but just can't view them.
However the internet connection on both my iPad Air and Macbook Pro are working perfectly fine, and they are both connected to the same Airport Extreme.
The firmware on Airport is updated, I have tried to reset network settings and restarting the iPhone with no luck.  Any suggestions on what to do?

Give me a screenshot of the working network IP setup on the MBP.
It should look like this. I need to see the IP address and you can also copy and paste for me the dns address.
The same thing from the iphone IP address and DNS will then help me figure out what is wrong.
If they both have an IP like 10.0.1.xx then the DNS or gateway (what apple calls router) has setup wrongly .. try setting manually with the same values exactly as the MBP.
If however the IP is something public like 200.100.2.100 and the other ipad is similar the Airport is setup wrongly in bridge and you have exhausted the available IP addresses so redo the setup of the Extreme so it is in router mode.

  • Connected to Airport Extreme but no Internet access

    Weird deal.
Have an airport extreme coupled with an airport express for an extender.
Multiple devices - iMacs, macbook pros, iPhones etc.
Opened up a dell xps laptop and downloaded some files... Working fine.
Next thing, dell laptop is connected (or shows it is) to the airport extreme base station. However, it is showing no Internet access. On my iPhone or iMac, access is just fine. Pull up airport software and it shows the dell laptop connected too.
Idea on why dell cannot get through?
Maybe I should be on dell communities asking but thought I'd ask here first.

I was able to get the printer and my MacBook to resume communicating by reinstalling printer software and using the IP address for the printer during setup instead of using the printer name as before.  I also can adjust the settings on my Airport utility app by clicking on configure other and entering the IP address for the base station and password.  It still does not recognize the base station initially as it did before, but this is only an issue on my MacBook.  If anyone knows how to get things to automatically recognize each other again I would be grateful to know how to fix this.

  • How do I connect my Airport Extreme to the Internet, It will not connect

I just got roadrunner internet and switched from dsl. I've been using the modem that came with dsl, but now I'm trying to use the Airport Extreme. My Imac does have the airport card, and I am able to get it to work with the airtunes to work with my stereo speakers, but I can't get a wireless internet connection. I've tried going through the set-up and I still can't get the internet connection to work. Can someone help me set it up?

I'm a little cofused. Do you have an express or an extreme? Or both? In the case of either the solo exrpress or the extreme, they need something to access the internet with. It would need a source, most likely to be ethernet connected to the modem. Unless you have a modem that also acts as a wireless router or some such concoction. You would then have a wireless router to give your iMac a wireless signal.

  • Fully Connected to AirPort Extreme, But With No Internet (PLEASE HELP!)

I have spent my Labor Day trying to figure out what is wrong with my wireless connection to no avail. I am entirely frustrated and would appreciate any helpful advice that can be offered.
    Here's the deal:
Yesterday afternoon, the two computers on my wireless network (an iMac PowerPC G4 and a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop) lost connection to the Internet. We had lost power earlier in the day, but didn't have any issues immediately after it was restored. A few hours later, it just stopped.
Today, I started troubleshooting to figure out how to fix it. The Dell had no trouble finding the network and connecting, but it was only connecting "locally." Same with mine. We've also got a Nintendo Wii connected wirelessly, but it was also not working. Lastly, we have an HP Photosmart C4280 printer plugged into the AirPort's USB. Despite not being able to get on the Internet or restore Wi-Fi to the Wii, we are still able to print without issue (from both computers).
At one point, I got Internet back on my iMac, but I kept messing around with the network settings in the hopes of getting everything back to normal and lost it again. I've been mainly playing around three different settings: the AirPort Admin Utility (changing Channels in the AirPort tab, checking boxes in the Network tab, etc.), the AirPort Setup Assistant (messing around with the Wireless Security), and the Network Control Panel (clicking things I don't understand in the TCP/IP tab, etc.).
At first, I thought the issue was with my security settings, so I tried setting up the AirPort without a password, and still could not connect with the iMac, Dell, or Wii. In a last-ditch effort, I went out and bought a Linksys Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router, which restored the Internet to the iMac, Dell, and Wii. Problem is, I love the AirPort (and do not want to sacrifice wirelessly printing through its USB).
I am completely frustrated! If anyone has any suggestions whatsoever, please help me out. It would be greatly appreciated!!
    Have a great night!
    TK

Ok, I'm going to assume that you are using the newer AirPort Utility and not the older AirPort Admin Utility that originally came on the CD with your AEBS.
If this is correct, the following would be the basic settings:
Either connect to the AEBS's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Setup, check these settings:
    AirPort - Base Station tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Base Station Password: <enter the desired administrator's password, the default is "public">
    o Verify Password: <re-enter the desired password>
    o Set time automatically: (optional)
o Allow configuration over Ethernet WAN port: (optional)
AirPort - Base Station - Base Station Options
    o Contact: (optional)
    o Location: (optional)
    AirPort - Wireless tab
o Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    o Radio Mode: 802.11b/g compatible
    o Channel: Automatic
    o Wireless Security: None
AirPort - Wireless - Wireless Options
    o Multicast Rate: 2 Mbps
    o Transmit Power: 100%
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
o Use Interference Robustness: Not enabled
    Internet - Internet Connection tab
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure: Using DHCP
    o DNS Server(s): (optional)
    o Domain Name: (optional)
    o DHCP Client ID: (optional)
o Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
o Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address
    Internet - DHCP tab
o DHCP Range: <leave default or enter desired range>
o DHCP Beginning Address: <leave default or enter desired beginning address>
o DHCP Ending Address: <leave default or enter desired ending address>
o DHCP Lease: <leave default or enter desired lease duration>
    o DHCP Message: (optional)
    o LDAP Server: (optional)
    Internet - NAT tab
o Enable default host at: (unchecked)
o Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol: (unchecked)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
    AirPort - Wireless tab
o Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal or WPA2 Personal
o Wireless Password: <enter desired wireless encryption password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter desired wireless encryption password>

  • Sony Ericsson w705 connects to Airport Extreme but can't get data

My Sony Ericsson w705 has wifi, it connects to my Airport Extreme (802.11g 2004 model) network but cannot receive data to surf the net. I have managed to connect the handset to another wifi network so my settings must be the issue. I have been told that once connected I should be able to see a DNS address in my network settings.
I connect to my network wirelessly with my macbook without any issues.
When I connect to my network with the Sony Ericsson w705 there is no DNS address in the connection settings. Any ideas how I can fix this.
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for the tips, Bob & Bill. We've done a complete shutdown/restart cycle of modem, AirPort Extreme (sorry for the confusion on that!), and computer (turning back on in order from the wall on out), but we hadn't tried leaving the modem off for longer than a couple minutes, so I'll try that. Although it seems strange to me that it would talk to the computer but not to the base station. I've never seen that happen.
Bob, his connection is satellite, so the modem is whatever goes with that. I don't know how different it is from a DSL modem or a cable modem. (He lives out in the sticks, and that's his only option other than dial-up.)
    Will post results ASAP.

  • Windows 7 connects to Time Capsule but not internet

I have a macbook pro and two windows vista pcs that connect and surf the internet fine with Time Capsule, however, for two windows 7 laptops, they detect the network and can connect to the network, but cannot connect to the internet.
I'm not sure what the problem is, and diagnosing/repairing the network does not help.
So currently the network looks like this with the Windows 7 laptops:
W7 Laptop --- Time Capsule Network -x- Internet

I too have this problem, I see that there is a solution solved notice at the top of the page, but I do not see the solution.

  • MBP and Dell Laptop connect to Airport Extreme BUT.......

When I go to Macpro tower with it's built in wireless airpot card and try to set up the airport settings and using the WAP personal 2 just like how my MBP is set up with the same password(and yes it does see the network I set up). It says the password is incorrect and wont allow me to connect.....
First I thought maybe weak signal strength but it's literally 18 feet from the APE to the MP....any clues?

Connection came back to both the iMac and the MacBook Pro without any further intervention.
Anyone have ideas on why this would happen to both computers at the same time, but not to other devices?

  • External hard drive connected to airport extreme is not recognized (Lion)

Plugged an external hard drive into the USB port on my new Airport Extreme Base Station, and it's nowhere to be found on my MB Pro (Lion). Doesn't appear in "Finder" or anywhere else.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    TIA

The drive also needs to be formatted right (NTFS and ExFAT don't work).  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2426
If the drive is bus-powered (ie, doesn't have its own power supply), you need a powered USB hub, as the Airport's USB port is underpowered.  Some folks have also needed them with some large (750 GB or more) powered drives, too.

  • Connected to airport wifi but not connected to internet

I am using an airport wifi - time capsule.  The internet works on my Mac which is wired in; however when I try the wifi I can connect to the airport network I made and have used for years but a the network does not connect to the internet.  I have powered down/ restarted and all that typical stuff.  Thoughts?
I am running Snow Leopard if that matters

Ok, this is clear and simple.
Your TC is wrongly configured. I am not sure if it has been like this for years and you are now adding a computer but the reason it is failing is because you have captured the public IP on the imac which is wired so the wireless computer cannot get an IP address.
    You need to
    1. Power off your cable modem.. I am assuming it is cable service .. if not tell me.
It needs to go off for 20min or so for the imac to drop the captured public IP.
    2. Reset the TC to factory.. this will not harm your backups.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    3. Since you are using snow leopard you must be on v5 airport utility.
The main things to do in the setup is to ensure you set the right settings for internet.
You are going to share a public IP .. at the moment you are bridged.
Then just check that the actual connection is set to dhcp.
Yours will look different ... don't worry about the actual numbers it is the using dhcp that is key.
Setup the base station name and wireless to create a wireless network.
eg.. I suggest all names that are short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Just tell us if you run into troubles.

  • Can connect to Airport Express but not to the internet

    Please help
My Airport Express shows the solid green light. I am also able to connect to it and use AirTunes on my HiFi.
However I cant connect to the internet. If I plug in my laptop to the router directly the internet works fine. So it is not a router problem.
    Any idea?

After following your instruction, I am not able to connect to the airport express anymore. I can still see the network but it is somehow unable to read the IP address.
When I try to get to the Airport utility it shows the base station but do not let me get into the configuration and shows an error message -4.
The only option I have then is to reset the AE

If you have completed all Apple troubleshooting steps with no change, more than likely your iPhone has a hardware problem. call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

  • Ipad connects with Airport Express, but not wireless router

I have a airport express that exends my network and is connected by an ethernet cable to the wireless router.  they are on opposite sides of the house from each other.  every other device i own has full bars wifi anywhere in the house.  but the ipad only seems to find the signal from the AE.
If i go in the bedroom with the wireless router, the signal drops to 1 bar.  if i unplug the AE along with all the other electronics for the TV/Receiver at night, the ipad loses the signal and cannot get a signal from the router, standing right next to it.  i have tried reset, hard reset, renew lease forgetting network, and all fails.  any ideas?
I have a Verizon Ultraline series 3 model A90-9100EM15-10 and the firmware is up to date.

Disclaimer - For me the Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
You likely have your reason for extending your network in this manner, but it seems that the AE is not really extending your router's network, but creating its own separate network that then extends your internet connection. This can be confusing to devices if you are expecting that they will switch between the two of them automatically.
The iPad can only support one connect at a time. It sounds like you want it to be able to jump from the AE connection to a router connection on a whim when signal strength drops. I am not sure that the iPad's radio is that sophisticated. At best when the iPad looses a signal it could ask if you want to join any other network that it detects, especially if it has connected to that network in the past.
AFA the router, some routers don't like iOS devices and just won't connect. When you go to Settings/Wi-Fi does the iPad see the router's network? If the iPad sees the router network, try configuring a connection by hand.
Tap Other... and write the name of the router's network. Tap Security and select the type of security the router's network employs. Return to the previous pane and enter the password. Tap Join. If you can make the conection the iPad should remember this network in the future. Turn on Ask to Join Networks and hopefully when the iPad looses the AE signal in the future it will then ask you if you want to join the router's network.
