Connected to internet but won't open browsers

My 2006 Macbook is having issues connecting to the internet.  I've both at home and at work using wifi and hard wiring.
Mail will open; send and recieve e-mail.  However chrome and safari won't connect to any pages.  It keeps timing out the connection.
I've done diagnositcs and the laptop connects to the internet.  I've also checked the proxies.
Any suggestions?  Currently running 10.7.5

It may be a DNS issue.  In the address bar, enter just the following:
173.194.73.99
and hit enter
That's the direct IP address for one of Google's servers.  If it's just a DNS issue, that should still take you directly to Google's home page.  It's easy enough to fix if that's the case, but I'd rather not get into it until you can confirm if the above works.

  • My Macbook connects to Internet but won't open webpage

Thanks in advance for reading this. My Macbook shows various Airport connections but hasn't worked for a while unless it is directly plugged into my modem. I just set up a new modem and connect via Airport. The Airport signal shows that it is strong and connected, but I cannot open a web page. Any ideas? I'm not sure of my operating system--I bought this mac in June and I know I don't have the fancy new one. Thanks so much.

Your post is confusing. Your airport can show many signals but that doesn't mean you're on any of those networks - which should require entering some sort of password. Where I'm sitting now, my airport icon shows 9 networks of which 7 are locked and I'm on one and haven't tried the other that might be open. You need to join a network, which you can do by selecting that option from the drop down menu - if you know the password. (You can also open the Network system preference.)
The version of the OS doesn't matter much, though what the airport drop down menu shows will be different from 10.4 to 10.5.
In other words, it sounds as though you're confusing having a wireless signal with being connected to the wireless network and thus to the internet.

  • Can connect to Internet but can't open any web pages

Hi there helpers, I was on my iMac this morning and everything was fine. I could open any browsers and it could load pages very fast, but after I downloaded and tried to install Xquartz ( recommended by apple) I went on my browser again any tried to open Facebook but it didn't work all it said on the browser was NO DATA RECEIVED. I thought it was only Facebook so I tried google but it wasn't, it was all of the websites. So I'm not sure if I've accidentally downloaded a virus or malware. By the way I use google chrome to do the things above but I did do it again in safari. Thanks

  • IMac connects to wifi, but won't open all websites

I can get email, but only loads certain websites.  Facebook and Google work, but not Amazon (and many more).  I get an error message in Safari "Safari can't open the page because the server stopped responding".  The iMac connected perfectly before, the only thing that has changed is that we were having people use our wifi (of which data is limited since we live in a rural area).  So, we added the security feature "Wireless Mac Authentication" to our router.  We have added the addresses of all of our devices and they all are working fine except for the iMac.  I have tried changing the DNS to the same that is on my Macbook pro, but it doesn't help.  Also, had a WEP for the router, but changed it to a WPA because I thought maybe that was the problem, but it did not help either.  Thanks for any help!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Airport Shows Connected to Internet, but won't actually connect...

My wife is having trouble connecting to the internet on her Macbook Pro and I've tried everything I can think of to get it corrected, but nothing has worked yet.  The airport wireless signal shows that she is connected to the interest  and has full bars, but she is not able to access the internet or check  her email (through mac mail).  She is right now out of state, but has not been able to access the internet in the two places where she is (the interest is working because everyone else around her is accessing it fine).
I've done the following to try and correct this so far, with no luck:
    - turned airport off, then back on after 10 seconds
          - fully shutdown the computer, then restarting
    - renewed DHCP Lease
    - checked proxies to make sure nothing is selected
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?  She has not downloaded or installed any new programs or even used the laptop in the last 48 hours.  I've heard of this happening to people before, but the above solutions have not worked to fix this.
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Apple TV connects to internet but won't log into iTunes or show any icons

I have had my apple tv for just over a year, updating it with the most recent software all of the time. I recently moved across the country, and have since had trouble with my unit. I use my time capsule for creating a wireless network within my home, and it works fine for all of my other devices, so I know the problem is with the Apple TV.
When I tried connecting my apple tv it never left the Activation screen, so after an hour I skipped it and went to manual setup. The internet is connected fine, but when I go to turn on home sharing or sign into my itunes, it either tells me my login is invalid (not true becuase it works on all other apple devices) or that itunes is unavailable. I tried to reset the unit to its factory settings but was told, again, that it could not connect to the apple network. I went out and purchased a cord to connect my apple tv to my computer and did the restore that way, but still have had no luck. When I reconnected it, all that showed up again was the computers and settings buttons and there was no hope of connection to itunes or home sharing.
Six hours later, I have done everythng from unplugging the time capsule, using another internet network, changing tvs, unplugging my apple tv, setting my location, etc and NOTHING works. I'm ready to scream. I'm a devout apple coustomer but I think its outrageous that beause something is wrong with their system I should have to pay for them to help me. Does anyone have any tips?! I'm desperiate.
Oh, there is no apple store within an hour of where I am, so going in to get help is not an option.

  • Says connected to internet but won't work!

My curve 8520 says it is connected to my mobile network and my wi-fi but fails to load any internet pages or the facebook app. However, I have just successfully received an e-mail... help!

    Hi there!
I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB):
    1) Register HRT
KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
    2) Resend Service Books
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
    3) Batt Pull Reboot
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should contact your wireless service provider for formal support.
    Good luck!

  • Connected to internet but won't connect to imessage.

    Hi
The wi-fi service provider is imagine and e-mail, surfing the web all works fine. When i try to hook up imessage the ipod seems to search for ages and then states there might be a problem with my connection; even though i can still downlaod apps, e-mail and use the web. I read that i need to change my DSN number to 8888 and then try to re-connect. Once i do this i go back into DNS and put back in the original number!!!!!!
Does anyone know the solution and if i do need to change my DNS# connection what effect will this have on other applications.
    thanks

It may be a DNS issue.  In the address bar, enter just the following:
    173.194.73.99
    and hit enter
That's the direct IP address for one of Google's servers.  If it's just a DNS issue, that should still take you directly to Google's home page.  It's easy enough to fix if that's the case, but I'd rather not get into it until you can confirm if the above works.

  • Internet Connect crash/Software Update won't open

    I have a 500mhz G3 slot loading iMac running 10.3.9
About 2 weeks ago, after waking FrankenMac up from sleep mode, I noticed the Airport status symbol failed to appear in the menu bar (next to the volume/date&time etc).
Looking into my Network settings revealed that I was indeed still connected to the internet, via my Airport, all systems go. However, I noticed that "show airport status in menu bar" was unchecked, so I checked the box. Which apparently did jack squat b/c there's still no icon.
For the last couple weeks, as long as I've been connected to the internet, I could really give a flying flip about whether the airport status icon is there or not. I mean, seriously. I know this computer is a little old so why rock the boat on something trivial?
Until today. Today I was determined to figure out where the icon is, why it went away and if there are any other underlying problems.
I started first with Internet connect. Applications->Internet Connect, clicked on the purple IC button, only to have it launch in the dock, bounce once, then quit.
    _A crash log shows:_

I attempted to open Software Update next to see if there was something critical (ha!) I might be missing. Apple menu->software update and it was a repeat performance of Internet Connect, except this time I wouldn't even get so much as the Software Update icon in the dock. The dock would move everything to the left, as if it was going to open, then....nothing.
*Software update was working as of 6/14*, when I updated (perhaps foolishly) to Quicktime 7.5.

This ridiculously long post boils down to 2 questions, really.
    • Any ideas why Internet Connect and Software Update won't open and how to fix?
    • Where in the world is my Airport status icon? (not that it matters since I'm connected to the internet, but doggone it!)
I've run Disk Utility, repaired permissions and the HD checks out fine. I'm just at a loss (not surprising, given my limited amount of fix-it-yerself knowledge)
Should I just put up, shut up and be grateful that these problems, while aggravating, aren't majorly disrupting my life?

Okay no worries, can't find where to delete this post...

  • We use an Airport Extreme in my office, which works fine for me. Occasionally we need to have more than one computer running on it, but for some reason it won't connect to the internet. It says we have internet, but won't connect to wifi. What's going on?

I use my computer everyday in our office and have no issue connecting to the internet/wifi, but when my boss comes in and tries to connect it doesn't work. It tells her she has internet, but won't connect to the wifi. We've tried a few different tactics(the basic ones I've seen on here), but nothing seems to be working for us. My computer automatically connects to our wifi.
Just recently the Airport Extreme has started with the blinking amber colored light on the front, which I believe means something is wrong? Can anyone help us figure out what's going on and why we can't get my boss' computer to connect as it should?
    Thank you!

    Here's an update:
Now the light is not blinking. It's a solid, consistant green. I don't know if it helps to narrow it down or anything, but I just figured I'd mention it.

I was having issues with firefox so I upgraded to firefox 4. I am connected to the internet but when I open firefox or even internet explorer it says Unable to connect problem loading page. Nothing will pull up!!!

I don't know if you are still having the issue but if you are have you contacted your ISP? It sounds to me like it's more of a connectivity issue than a browser problem. I've dealt with similar things several times and in both cases it was something with the modem or an ISP setting.
I'm also wondering if it could be a Wi-Fi issue. Can you log in to your router? (It varies by brand but you would go to a site such as http://192.168.10.1. That is for Trendnet. The information for yours should be in the documentation that came with it.)
You should be able to get the router log in page to come up even if you can't connect to any websites. (Provided the network is set up correctly.)
I also would double check your connection settings (if you're connecting over Wi-Fi) or your ethernet connection. (If you're connected directly to the modem and router.)
Hopefully one of these suggestions will be helpful.
