Connected to network, but no internet connection

Just returned from a one week trip to CA with my macBook. Prior to the trip everything regarding a connection to the internet worked fine... I have an Airport Extreme network set up at home. For the first five days of my trip, everything worked fine as well. Connected to several different open networks (offered by hotels and Bed & Breakfasts (B&Bs). Then suddenly I could not get an internet connection with any browser (Safari, Firefox, Flock). At one particular B&B it worked flawlessly one evening, then the next morning at the same B&B, no internet. Yet I was connected OK to the open network. Moved on to another city, a different hotel and network, same problem. I was connected to the network, but no internet connection. In Safari, the blue bar would get as far as the http:, then it would hang there. Now having returned home to my Airport Extreme network, everything seems to be working fine again in all browsers. Any idea what I may have encountered for those two days? I have another trip planned in the near future, and would hate to have this happen again.

I'm sorry but I'm not posting to answer your problem but just to say that I have a very similar issue when connected to my home network through either wireless or ethernet- connection is erratic and pages hang despite showing an excellent signal strength. I have a divided drive and have windows installed on my Macbook. I have no problems on the windows side. My friends who have ipods and iphones have similar problems connecting to my home network. I have no problems connecting wirelessly to any other network that I've tried. This is a real shame as I want to use Mac software but end up in Windows all the time. Any light anyone can shed on this would be very welcome.

  • Macbook pro connected to network but no internet connection

    Hey all,
i have a Macbook pro, running on OS X 10.6.8,
i made a software update, where a  java update was made, an HP printer update, a Itunes ipdate and a Macbook Pro SMC firmware update 1.6.
Since then, i cant connect to the internet.
I ran network diagnostics and it says "your connection appears to be working correctly".
Same if i plug in the Lan-cable to my laptop.
Network diagnostics says that my internet is running correctly, but no browser or any other program can connect to the internet.
tried it at 2 different location (home and work) and nothing works. Other laptops have internet connection through the same router and wifi.
restarted router and wifi, did not help
restarted wifiAirport multiple times, wont help,
restarted Laptop multiple times, wont help.
renewed DHCP, and IP adress, i get a new ip adress, and it says im connected but it wont work.
    any other ideas?

That doesn't mean anything.  You can't telnet to google. lol
The ping you did above shows you that Internet access and DNS is working fine.  If it wasn't, you wouldn't be able to get replies.  This means that the problem is with your browser.  Open up Safari and hit Safari/Reset Safari under it's menu.  See if that works to solve your issue.  If it doesn't, then it's a plugin or something else (maybe Proxy changes, etc.) which could be causing this.  One option you have to test is if the reset doesn't fix it, install another browser (you'll need to download the dmg via another PC and install it on the mac from a memory stick or something) and see if a 3rd party browser works.

  • Connected to network but can't connect to internet using wireless

Hi, I just installed a Linksys WRT 45G and can connect my pc and my laptop to it and use the internet fine when I use ethernet cable, but if I try to use my laptop wirelessly I can't connect to the internet.  It says that I am connected to my network and that strength signal is excellent but no internet connection.  I have that bluetooth button on the front of the laptop turned on.  The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite with Centrino.  I was told that I don't need to buy a wireless card as the Centrino already does this.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I think you can try to update the firmware of the router, to check if that stops connection dropping. To update the firmware of router try this: 1. Go to www.linksys.com/download and select correct model number and version number. Download the firmware and save it on your computer. 2. Check the file it sould be firmware image file like .bin etc. If it is a compressed zip file extract it to get firmware image file. 3. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. 4. Go to administartion tab there 5. Go to fimware update sub-tab there 6. Browse for the firmware image file and click update 7. when update completes turn off modem & router. 8. After 2 minutes turn on modem and after 2 more minutes turn on router. To get network key, connect your computer to one of the four ports on router using ethernet cable. 1. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Use your password if you have changed it earlier 2. Go to wireless tab. 3. Go to wireless security sub-tab 4. If security mode is wpa or wpa2 note down passphrase/shared key, if security mode is WEP note down wep key number 1. This will be your network key Well you need to input all the wireless settings of your wireless network on Wii. To get these settings: 1. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. 2. Goto wireless tab. Here you will get the wireless network name/SSID. Here make sure wireless SSID broadcast is enabled. 3. Now goto wireless security sub-tab and here you will get the security mode and the security key. If security type is WPA note passphrase/shared key, and if its WEP note down wep encryption level and key 1 from listed 4 keys

  • Attempting to Connect to Network Shuts down Internet Connection

I am setting up a G4 400 MgH Mac with AGP graphics to get on a network of computers. This originally came from a college where it was on a network running OSX and OS9.1, and I have added a 100 GB hard drive on which I installed OX10.4, and upgraded to OS9.2.2.
It is very odd, as when I try to connect to the network through the ethernet connection in starting up in OS9.2.2, it will connect to the other computers and to the internet without problems, and does not affect the internet connection. However, when I start up in OSX, all the other computers on the network lose their internet connection immediately when this computer boots up into OSX. I can, however, connect to the other computers on the network, but cannot connect to the internet. I am puzzled as to what resource in OSX must be damaged to cause such a problem. I have tried reloading Tiger, and have used Disk Warrior, but the problem is the same.
I would welcome any thoughts on how to fix this so we can get this added to the graphics network at our school.
    G4/1GHz, 7600 w/G3/500 MHz , G4/733 MHz Server   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Only thing I can think of is that the AGP in OSX must have a Network setting that is grabbing an already used IP, or perhaps even the IP of the Router, or perhaps is set to Share the Internet connection.
I'd first off uncheck all ports in Network Port Configurations, reboot, for a try check on Ethernet in Port congigs again.
2nd, I'd try giving the AGP a Manual IP above the possible range handed out by the router.
3rd, I'd make a new User and see if the same thing happens.
If that doesn't work, I'd try trashing these and rebooting...

  • Can connect to network but not internet

In trying to secure my wireless network, I connect to my network, but I am unable to get to the internet with the wireless security enabled. I have no problems connecting over the wireless when I disable the security.
I have a linksys broadband router.
I use a Mac book with intel chip that I am trying to connect wirelessly. I also have an older imac that is connected directly to the router that I was trying to share files.
I was trying to setup WEP- I know very little about network protection. I have had a router for a couple of years and when I was trying to set it up so I could share iles I realized it was not protected. At the linksys website I had several options, but experienced the same problem (I had a strong network connection, but unable to connect to the internet) no matter which encryption option I chose.
The error meeaage says that is unable to connect
    Thanks

    Hi.
I assume that you have a linksys router plugged into an airport express.
First off, seeing as you have a macbook you should use WPA2 instead of WEP as it is more secure. You can select this option in the airport admin utility on the main page. Make up a password enter it and click apply. The express will update. Then, when you select your network from the airport icon on the top of your screen it will prompt you to choose the type of security on the network (which will be WPA2 and after selecting this it will then propmt you to enter the password. Enter the password again (checking the keychain box as well) and this should be it.

  • Can connect to network but not internet. Please Help!!!!!!!!!

I have a Thinkpad T-60p and have encountered a serious problem; I am unable to connect to the internet. The Thinkpad will recognize and connect to wireless networks but when I go to actually open a webpage it does not open. I spent hours troubleshooting the problem to no avail. My other laptop connects to the internet fine, so I do not think it is an issue with my router or modem. I also went to my neighbors and I was unable to connect to the internet even though I could connect to his network; once again my second computer does not have a problem. I tried what I could in the Thinkvantage wireless software but I am not that familiar with it. When I use the test connection option it just reads, “unable to connect to internet” but I have a strong signal to my network. I then tried a wired connection directly to my cable modem and my neighbors; once again it showed that I have a connection, but still will not connect to the internet. I tried disabling my Firewall and Virus software and still could not connect. I have shutdown, unplugged and reset everything. I still receive the same results. I am not sure what has happened, I have not installed any new software or hardware recently. The computer has been working great up until this morning. I ran my virus software and a free online scan as well, nothing had been detected. I called tech support and they said it was a software issue to either pay $100 for help or post in the forum. The only other option I can think of is a complete systems restore, which I am trying to avoid. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Please Help,
    P.

I will try that when I get home from work, thank you for the advice. However,I did notice that when it attempts to connect it shows the IP Address in the IE window bottom left corner. In the past it would always read connecting to "website name" but since the problem started it shows the IP address instead of the actual name.

  • Computer is connected to network but can't connect to internet (Safari and Chrome), e-mail, App Store, ect.

My Macbook is connected to Wi-fi (four bars) but can't connect to the internet or any other services that requires internet. Other devices in my house have easily connected to the internet but every time I open Chrome it says: "This webpage is not available". What do I do?

Restart your internet modem and router and your Mac then try Safari etc.
If that doesn't help, try this DNS server ..

Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Try a browser.
if that doesn't help, check the firewall.  System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall > Firewall Options

I'm connected to the network but I can't connect to the internet.  The network is working fine since my Xbox live is working with no issues.  Any ideas?

I recomend turning off the router and the modem that you have and then turning them back on.
    If that doesn't work,
    Open system preferences > Network
Go down to the bottom of the window and click Assist me
A drop down window will come up and you want to click Diagnostics
It will take you through the steps

  • Airport will connect to network but not internet

    Hi,
My MacBook air started out working beautifully on my wireless network-high download speeds, solid connection, etc... After about six hours of operation however, it has stopped being able to find the internet consistently, no matter what wireless network I try. I use a NetGear wireless hub in my room, and my laptop is able to consistently find and connect to the network (the hub is only about 3 feet away) but it cannot connect to the internet. Under network settings I get the message "Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet" or "Airport cannot connect to the internet." I know that the internet is working, because the network works fine for my MB Pro, iPhone, TiVo, and xBox 360. In fact, the MBA is occassionally able to find the internet and get an IP address. Sometimes this IP address allows me to load web pages extremely slow and sometimes I cannot even find google. The problem extends beyond my one network, however, as I have difficulty connecting to other wireless networks. I am on a college campus and sometimes can connect to the campus WiFi, but it again frequently connects without being able to figure out an IP address. Some help would be great.

I have a similar issue. Mine does the same thing, but only if in a specific area. If I'm sitting on my recliner with the Air on my lap, then it will connect, but I can't get to any sites. The browser just stalls.
If I move to the table that's 3 feet away from me, then the internet connects without any problems.
It could be a reception issue with me, or something. I don't know. At first it connected at very high speeds. That was before 10.5.2.
I don't know if the Leopard Update has anything to do with it, since my iMac doesn't have this problem at all. And that has an N card also.
I hope Apple is looking into this wireless issues.

  • WRTG54S Connect to network but not internet

I have a WRTG54S and Mediacom 12mbps. My router worked fine on my old laptop (a Dell running Vista) It sat in a box for about 6 months and now that I have a new one (Sony running 7) I can connect to my network but not the internet. I have upgraded the firmware from 7.6 to 7.8 with no change. I have tried no security, wep, and wap with no change. I also cloned the MAC, again no change. Windows cannot detect any problems and when I try to enable the router to connect to the internet it always says connection failed. I can connect when directly wired to the modem but not when wired to the router or wirelessly. Any ideas? Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Wire your computer directly to your modem, open a command prompt window and enter "ipconfig /all". Post the full output. That will show what kind of modem you have and what the best configuration for your WRT should be.

  • Connect to network, but not internet

I have an iMac with 10.5.5 and a linksys wrt wireless router.
My connection status is "connected" but I can not access internet. It is a cable ISP.
I have tried changing config of router. I have also reset it to factory default.
I have tried setting up a new connection using "Assist me" and tried the "Diagnose"
But no luck yet. The only thing I have not tried is manually resetting router.
Monday (tomorrow) I will be trying again.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks

Once your mac appears to be connected to your network
try pinging an ip address of a website
open your terminal and issue the following command
    ping -c10 212.58.224.138
press enter and wait for a response.
    then try
    ping -c10 bbc.co.uk
    press enter.
if you get a response when pinging the IP address but no response to the domain name it shows that you have an internet connection but a dns issue.

  • Iphone 4 is connected to network, but no internet.

So I'm surfing last night when suddenly, the airport utility pops up and tells me I should change a setting to "bridge" mode. I change the setting as recommended and then have problems with my airport extreme and airport express connecting to the internet. I eventually had to manually enter the router IP address.
Now, my iPhone will not use the wifi signal. It appears to be connected to the wifi network but only works in 3g mode. I've reset the network settings and tried to manually enter the airport extreme IP address and it's still not work.
Would appreciate any help. Also, is there a support document available that explains how to set up a wireless network with an airport extreme?
    Thanks,
    Mick

I am having the same problem. My iPhone 4 connects to the airport extreme base station and shows a full wifi signal, but has no other functionality, Internet or Remote is not working. Another iPhone or laptop have no problem connecting to the same base station. All the settings in my iPhone seem o.k.
I noted that the DHCP assigned IP address ends with 10.0.0.216 where the other devices IP addresses end in the single digits.
    Thanks for you help.

so i got a new Airport Extreme Base Station, hoping to replace my old og airport. i can connect to the new AEBS network easily, but i can't connect to the internet. with the old airport, i can connect to the internet no problem, hence i can write this post. "internet connect" tells me:

    connected to "myNetwork"
connected to the internet via ethernet
    +new and improved AEBS:+
    Connected to "myNetwork"
but that's it. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. oh also, it seems to be running pretty hot. is that normal? thanks!

Hello mookyee. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It's always a good idea to power recycle all of your network components when changing configurations ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."
