Connected to network but Safari says not connected

Just had to reinstall OS X and upgraded to 10.4.11
I connect to my FIOS network using Airport, and am having no problems. However, when I attempt to open Safari it says I am not connected to the Internet.
I run diagnostics and the following happens:
it lets me get all the way to selecting an airport network, then does a scan--says it's looking for PPPoE host, unable to find. Tells me to check network settings.
I have tried restarting the Actiontec router with no results. what gives?

I think my son's apt bldg uses FIOS and as I recall he is also PPoE, so PPoE may not be as uncommon as we think, for FIOS.
You should have gotten a letter from your ISP that said what your username and password for your account with the ISP is, to setup for PPoE, whether you are static or DHCP external WAN IP address assignment, etc. Do you still have that letter?
You're not connecting to your computer via ethernet cable directly to your ActionTec right now, correct? You're going wirelessly? If that's the case, can you reconfigure your hardware to connect to your ActionTec via ethernet cable? (Don't forget to change your computer's system prefs network stuff from airport to ethernet DHCP.) And if so, I know you've done so gazillions of times already but if you haven't done so (lately?) while tethered via ethernet cable, try rebooting your router and your computer one more time. I'm trying to figure out whether its a wireless thing, e.g., maybe the wireless isn't turned on in the ActionTec or has MAC authentication enabled and your computer's Airport card's MAC address isn't on the list, or the wireless channel encryption password or algortithm is mismatched, or... So, if we can get in via ethernet cable, we can start rummaging around in your computer's network settings and in your ActionTec's configuration pages.
By the way, how are you posting on this forum? Different computer same network? Or different computer different network?

  • PCI wireless card connected to network but safari says not connected to net

    Hi everyone
I moved my computer and had to change from wired ethernet to wifi. I installed a ralink PCI card in my MDD G4 dual 867. It sees the network and connects but Safari doesn't know it is on a network. What am I missing? I also have to connect manually every bootup. How do I setup autostart? My wireless router is a D-link DIR-615. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi David,
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

  • IPad is connected to Airport, but Safari says not connected to Internet?

I'm hoping someone can suggest something for me.  We had a power outage last night, and when the power came back and I got the Airport working again our iPad won't connect to the internet.  I don't think the problem would be in the Airport, since the computer is connected wirelessly also and is connecting OK.  I have tried renewing the lease, turning the wi-fi off and back on, forgetting the network and reestablishing the connection, and restarting the iPad, all to no avail.  The IP address listed when I look at the iPad settings starts with 169 - from what I've read that means it's not connecting correctly.  Is there anything else I can try to get it working?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I forgot to mention that, but I have done that as well.

  • AirPort says 'connected' but Safari says 'not connected to the internet'

    I'm stumped.
I just replaced a failed HD. Installed OS from original disk. Airport shows strong signal and says "connected" but when trying to open Safari or check for software updates I receive a 'you're not connected to the internet' message.
Remember I had upgraded to Snow Leopard, so just installed that from disk as well. Same situation with the attempts to wirelessly connect.
Note - all other computers, smart phones, etc in the house can still connect wirelessly. When I connect the MacBook via the ethernet cable, it's fine. Problem is only with wireless connection.
Service is Verizon Fios. Have tried repeatedly restarting the router.
    Any other suggestions?

    John,
Yes, I've been running Software Update frequently over the last 24 hours (needed to update all the software on that new HD) said there were no updates at last check. However, followed link you provided above and installed the Combo update.
Was hopeful on initial restart after that install, as I rec'd a message to the effect of: "none of your preferred networks are connected". Selected my home network (which was listed and with strong signal), entered password and same result - not connected to the internet.
Took your advice above and returned to "Using DHCP" setting. Inital response was "no ip address" and then after short time, "self assigned ip address" "will not be able to connect to the internet". Tried "renew DHCP lease" and continually receive same result. All very frustrating.
My next step will be to try and connect wirelessly on a friend or family member's network (my local Apple store is a bit far away. Easier for me to visit the ones near my office during the work week).
If I am able to connect on another's network, does that indicate it's an issue with my router?
If I am UNABLE to connect on another's network, does that indicate it's an issue with my laptop?
This is so disappointing - the replacement of the HD was so easy, as was the reinstalling of software. This connection issue is souring what was a relatively painless and quick experience.
    Thank you again,
    Christine

  • Powerbook cord connected and orange but PB says not connected

Help my PowerBook G4 1.67 is not reading the power supply cord. I tried replacing it with another power supply cord that I know works and still nothing. It all started this morning when I woke up to a dead powerbook. The orange light was on the power supply cord but my PB would not boot up. So I went to an alternate PB G4 and started testing the cords batteries, etc. Now my dead battery is charging on my other PB. I cannot figure out why my power cord is connected and orange but my PB says it is not connected. Please Help

    Hi again,
The conditioning should of done it, if the battery life has not been had. You could try it again and see if it takes a bit better. My battery too was part of the recall, and it is still going, but I do condition it at the 6 month level now instead of letting it go till it shows signs of needing it.
When you see 64% on the computer, how many lights come on when you push the little button on the battery? (can be done live, on the bottom of the computer). Each light is about 20%. If they match, you are in calibration, if not, condition it again... and maybe give it a bit more time to charge. Or until all the lights are on on the battery. At that time, it should show 100% (or close) on the computer.
Remember, in the charging process, if you are using the computer medium heavy, the charger will just keep up to the drain of the use and not gain much on percentage, also, the higher the percentage the slower the charger progresses with the remainder.
The main thing is to have the battery lights and the computer % in-sync, so they are both on the same page... and conditioning does that. Or should do that when done fully down and fully back up again.
    Good Luck, Enjoy

  • Airport shows I am connected to a secure network, but Safari will not connect nor will any other internet software.

I cannot connect via Safari to a live Internet connection.  System preferences show Airport is on and connected to a secure network.  I am able to connect using my iPad and other devices.

Thanks. Turns out that I had to re list the router and update its password along with resetting the DHCP.  Once that was accomplished all seemed to work fine again.  Just can't figure out why the connection was disrupted.

  • Safari says not connected to internet- System Prefs does...

OK, I'm not extremely computer savvy, but I'm not totally ignorant either. But I have a network connection problem that I have absolutely no idea what's going on. I have a black MacBook Pro, and am running 10.4.11. I have an airport express at home, and never had any access/connection trouble. Where I work (a university), there is an open network we can access, but for some reason, I cannnot. My airport status indicator shows full strength, and systems prefs gives me the connection is A-OK message with the green light, saying I'm connected to this network, but when I open Safari (or Firefox), it tells me I am not connected to the internet. Another interesting thing is when I open itunes in this situation, it finds shared music libraries on the network, but it will not connect to them. This is the only network I have ever used where this is happening. Also, other people seem to be able to access this network with no trouble with Powerbook G4s. Does anyone have similar problems or any ideas at all on this one?

My guess is that you're not authenticated on the network and, for that, you should talk to the sysops there. Most universities have "open" networks that still require authentication, meaning they're open to the university users but not to everyone.

    Hi:
There are no dumb questions...answers, yes, but not questions.   Sometime I use acronyms and forget that I should explain things a bit more.
Resetting those two things sometimes helps and cannot hurt.

My macbook pro is connected to wifi but it will not connect to the internet. When I go on safari, it says that "Safari can't verify the identity of the website". Then I tried to update flashplayer but you need the internet to update it. All this only started happening after that Moutain Lion software was downloaded onto the laptop. Please help, I have been internet-less for a couple months now.

  • Wifi connected safari says not connected

In settings, wifi is connected, but safari says its not connected, any suggestions?  I tried restarting, rebooting, and connecting to lap top and updating.  Thanks.

You may not really be connected to your WiFi network.
Your router may not have given your iPad a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the ">" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPad (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

  • Safari says not connected to internet on certain sites when connection is good and IMG[] images don't show up anymore?

I recently updated to 10.6.8 from 10.5.x and have been having some issues.  First, Safari will say that my computer is not connected to the internet, but it is.  I can be on YouTube, for example, and then try to go to eBay, and it will say not connected to internet, but I can go to Google and it will be fine without doing anything.  Almost like it cannot connect to the server, but the message is that I'm not connected to the internet.  I can turn Airport off and back on and get on most pages that wouldn't open originally.  It's not site-specific.  Sometimes it's Google, Facebook, eBay, YouTube, forums, etc. and other times those same sites work just fine.
The next problem, which I feel is related is that IMG[xxx] images won't open some of the time now on forums that have Photobucket and Tinypic IMG codes inserted into threads.  It will just show the blue box with a question mark.  I think that's because my Safari can't open the image hosting websites because sometimes when I click on the blue box to open the link, it says not connected to the internet and Photobucket seems to be one of the regular problem sites.
I've tried clearing my cache, reseting Safari, and a few other suggestions on here from similar problems, but I haven't seen a post describing my same issues exactly.  I have not tried Firefox and would prefer to keep using Safari.

    Try repairing permissions.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup  disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Select:  Repair Disk Permissions
This can take a few minutes and better to not use your Mac while it's running.
When it's finished, quit and relaunch Safari to test.

I have a Yamaha RX-A2010 A/V receiver which is connected to internt but it does not receive my itunes from my Mac computer.

Well, I see a few things that can be in the way:
    1. MAC address filtering is really not a security measure since the MAC addresses are sent in the clear (unencrypted) and many devices can have their MAC addresses changed easily with software.  I'd recommend losing the MAC filtering and just use WPA2 and be even more secure than you are currently.
    2. If you disabled the firewalls during the install, that may have been a bad thing.  The installer is supposed to create ports through the firewalls during install, so if they are disabled and later enabled, the ports are not there.
    3. Does your printer show up if you type its IP into a browser?
