Connecting 2013 Macbook Retina 15" to Acer B286 HK monitor via Thunderbolt.
I have a 2013 Macbook Retina 15" and would like to connect an Acer B286 HK monitor via Thunderbolt/MiniDisplayPort.
I am using the standard Apple Thunderbolt cable, but it does not work. The monitor complains about "No signal".
Short answer: I have this exact configuration, and yes, the newest rMBP 15" w/Nvidia card will drive the UP3214Q over HDMI at 4k and 30Hz. It will drive it as a separate desktop with the laptop open, and it will drive it as the sole display -- either way works fine.
Longer answer: You should be aware of 2 things (that I wish I had been more aware of before purchasing the monitor)
1) If you are used to 60Hz or higher, the 30Hz limitation over HDMI is noticable, even in day-to-day productivity work. The mouse lag is very noticable and annoying to me.
2) Scaling/HiDPI support [the way the integrated retina display works] is virtually nonexistant at the resolution you'd want to run it at. What this means is that you either run the monitor at a lower resolution (and everything is blurry), or you run it at full resolution and everything (menu, dock, fonts, etc) is extremely small. You can use SwitchResX to enable scaling support at odd resolutions (for instance, I've successfully gotten HiDPI/scaling to run at 1920x1200 and 2048x1080, with black bars at the edges), but it's not an ideal resolution for this size monitor. I want to match the TB display resolution (2560x1440) in HiDPI mode, but I've been unable to get it working after hacking away at it for 2 days.
I'm hoping that Apple will fix these limitations. Multiple people have reported that MST over DP1.2 works on the same hardware if you boot into Windows, so the hardware support is there -- it just needs to be enabled in the drivers by Apple. Whether they actually will or not is anyone's guess. In the meantime I (and many others) are in limbo wondering if we should return these 4k displays, or keep them and hope "proper" support comes. Since it's not a specifically advertised capability, Apple isn't under any obligation, but I think there's more than a few people hoping that Apple does right by the users and enables the full functionality that the hardware supports.

When I connect my Macbook Pro to my Dell DLP projector, either via cable or wirelessly, I just see a dark screen with the mouse and mouse trails only, can any one help?
jpmarkques post is a good start point, after folling his directions, you can try detect displays. Also try different rsolution and refresh rates.
Most of the projectors I have used support a 1024X768 res.
Youcan also try a pram reset if it still does not detect.
Leave theproctor connected and powered up, power down the MBP.
Power back up the MBP and hold the following keys before you hear the start up chime:
Option, command, P,R (no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times. -
Connect 2013 Macbook Air to 30" Cinema Display
Hi, so I bought a DVI to thunderbolt connector and connected my macbook air to my 30" display, but it wont give the 30" monitor the full 2560x1600. Is it even possible to do this or am I stuck at driving it at a terrible resolution?
You need a dual-link DVI adapter such as this one.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
What cable do I need to connect my macbook retina display to my old windows xp pc
Hi
I just bought a new MacBook Pro retina and need to transfer pics and music from old pc onto it.
I Understand you can do it wireless but assume this will take forever (given I have about 120gb of files to move)
Have also read that you can do this with an Ethernet cable (but there is no Ethernet port on my macbook). Can anyone advise on any cable/adaptor that I Can use to connect them?
FInal point - have also read that you can transfer via external hard drive but a bit clueless as to which one can easily handle both mac and Windows. I'm not very tech savvy so didn't want complexity of having to reformat anything (which you seem to have to do on a lot of them). I am planning on getting an external hard drive anyway (to back up on) but was ideally going to buy one that was designed to work with mac hence trying to do the initial migration job using a cable if possible.
Anyway all help and feedback appreciated
j1. Use a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter. The online Apple Store sells these.
2. Any drive which wasn't originally designed for usage with Macs will work out of the box, but will need to be reformatted prior to usage with Time Machine or to store a bootable clone.

How do I connect my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 to a VGA monitor
I have a MacBook Pro mid 2010 that I would like to connect to a VGA LCD monitor. It connects and I get the mac book screen saver but no desktop icons or tool bar. Am I missing a setting?
External screens are designed to work as extended displays for your computer's display. It means that menu bars and desktop icons won't appear, and you will only see windows if you drag them to the right part of the computer's display.
To change this, you have to activate video mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019 -

How to connect VGA Monitor via Thunderbolt Display
I've been using my Macbook Air mid 2013 with a Samsung monitor connected via the Mini Display Port to VGA adapter. I've now bought a 27" Thunderbolt display, which I've connect to my Mac, and assumed I could now daisy chain my samsung monitor into the Thunderbolt port in the back of the monitor. This isn't working.
Is this expected behaviour? Some people have said online that it will work if there's some other Thunderbolt peripheral between the Thunbolt Display and the VGA adapter, but I don't know what kind of peripheral they mean.
Apple support says that my model Macbook air can power two external displays.
How can I get this to work?
Thank youI want to know if I can connect a vga monitor to the quad by simply getting a vga to dvi adaptor.
Yes, you can.

What is the best adapter for connecting multiple monitors via Thunderbolt?
Currently using two 24" Dell monitors (one T-bolt, one via usb adapter), but have consistently poor performance with USB video adapters. I'm looking to replace one monitor with a 32" LED display via hdmi and would like to move to dual 32's in the future. Recommendations?
I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro with Retina Display and I use two 24" external monitors.
One is connected via HDMI and the other is connected via Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and I have no problems whatsoever. -
Using MacBook Pro as a display for external media via Thunderbolt/Displayport
How do I enable Thunderbolt display input via HDMI to use my MacBook Pro late 2011 as a display for other media? I have HDMI connected by a rocketfish adaptor and their company website Q and A seems to indicate this should work.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external display. To do this, you need that Target Display mode is included in the firmware, and this is only available on iMacs.
However, you can still use your MacBook Pro as an external display for another Mac by using ScreenRecycler -
I'm looking for the best solution to connect my Macbook Retina to VGA projectors at work. I see two adapters on the Apple store both with bad reviews. Has anyone had good sucess with any adapters that go from HDMI to VGA?
ThanksBelow are the two adaptors I use that work fine.
I use the VGA at work for the connection to conference room projectors
I use the DVI connection to a $100 flat screen second second monitor I have
I'm happy with both. The only issue is, since I plug/unplug the thunderbolt cable several times a day, the connection moves and the monitor sometimes looses the signal for a second. Thunderbolt is just not a tight connection like DVI and VGA and doesn't hold it in place strong enough. Nice that its small but not a good connector over all...the number one requirement of a connection is that it is tight and secure...thunderbolt fails this.

Late 2013 macbook pro question
Hi there, Im new to the mac laptop world. I received the late 2013 Macbook Retina as a gift and I do some gaming or mixing for a few hours at a time. Now the core temperatures never exceed 76 C (typically 68-72).
Are these volatile temperatures for the CPU?
As well, should I worry about the fans longevity? Or should I let apple care plan take care of that?
8GB Ram 1600 MHz
2Ghz i7 quadcore Haswell (Iris Pro graphics)
Didnt grab the one with the Nvidia gpu.
To anyone who reads, thanks for your time! I appreciate it.Are these volatile temperatures for the CPU?
No. These are well within normal operating temperature based on your usage. The thermal limit according to intel is 100 C (212F) for your processor. Additionally, your machine has firmware to automatically shut itself down in the event this temperature is exceeded for an extended period of time.
As well, should I worry about the fans longevity? Or should I let apple care plan take care of that?
The latter. Just use your machine normally. The fans are just serving their purpose, that being cooling your machine to keep the temperatures within stable operating parameters. -
Hello,
I have just connected my Macbook Pro to a 1080p 23' LG monitor using a Displayport to VGI adapter. However, when I use the 1080p setting, it cuts off a little bit of the top bar. When I switch to lower resolutions, it works just fine. I would rather use it at 1080p, though. Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks,
HiTryxYou may need a display adaptor but can otherwise use a non-Apple monitor.

How do I connect a 2013 Macbook Pro Retina to an Epson Power Lite 61p LCD Projector?
I am trying to attach an Epson PowerLite 61p LCD Projector to my 2013 Macbook Pro Retina, but I cannot find which type of adapter I need. I would assume whichever adapter is required it must connect via thunderbolt. However, I do not know if the required adapter is a "Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter," "Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter," or a "Thunderbolt to VGA Adapter." I would deeply appreciate your help and guidance. Thanks!
It does not matter whether you get an Apple adapter or a third pary one. What you have there is a Mini Displayport to VGA adapter, but as you know, your new MacBook no longer has an MDP port!
Thunderbolt to VGA adapters do not exist but there are plenty of HDMI to VGA adapters out there:
