Connecting 3 G5s thru fibre

I am new to this type of storage system and was just trying to understand it...
So we have 3 G5s and each G5 had a Sonnet Sata PCIx card installed and each G5 has 2TB of Sata Drives RAID 0 for HD video storage. We want to add a fibre card in each and share media between all 3 G5s. Does this work like a gigabit Ethernet router? Is there an inexpensive Fibre Router that will allow us to network the three computer and share files from external SATA drives atttached to each G5? Or do we have to buy a lot more stuff to make it work including a Xserve and SAN software?
Thanks!

Hey YNR,
Sadly to say, in your case, fibre is not the same as gigE.
In the general case, you have the g5s with fibre cards hooked up either to a storage device with fibre ports or a fibre switch which in turn is hooked up to a storage device with fibre ports.
Hooking up 3 g5s to each other with fibre to share data on the actual machines will simply not work.
WIth that said, you can technically hook up a g5 with fibre to any storage device with fibre ports. On the other hand, if you want to setup a SAN, you will need a fibre switch and a fibre storage device (and SAN software as well). If you want something supported directly by apple, g5 + fibre cards + fibre switch + xserve raid + xsan.

    Hi Ravi,
I checked what you are saying its integer type in that edit key mapping.I think its a bug in MDM because when i tried sending the

  • Hh3 connection to openreach fibre box

Hi guys,  been lurking, but first question if anyone can help.
Hh3 connected to openreach fibre box, 70mb to just fibre to cabinet.  Which is great.
I rebooted the hh today, and noticed when the Ethernet connected for the wan came up it showed, connected at 100mb
    eg
      00:00:38,01 Jan.WAN connection WAN2_INTERNET_B_ETH2 connected.
    00:00:38,01 Jan.Gigabit Ethernet Link Up, Rate: 100Mbps
i would expect that. Link to be gb .  I have tried different cables and still get the same, so is it wrong ? Do I need to log a support call or is this right ? Not tried the speedtest since seeing this so don't know if my speedtest has dropped since.
Any thoughts would be appreciated ......dan

  • TSeries LAN connection issues across fibre link

I have some LAN connection issues when getting dhcp or even assigning static  ip to T61 laptop.  Doesn't get dhcp ip settings dynamic and if given staitc, can't ping any system on network nor can systems ping it.  DHCP is at main site and this laptop is at remote site. Link between sites is fibre.  All other systems at remote site where is laptop get their DHCP settings as normal.  If I bring laptop from remote site to main site and plug in cable it gets DHCP normal but not at remote site, it doesnt get it, so i know the LAN adapter is good.  What is wrong?, what across WAN link it preventing it? seeing that all other systems at remote site get their settings well.  Thanks in advance.

  • New Toshiba wireless turns Internet connection off (thru Linksys WRT110)

I "commissioned" a new Toshiba A660 (customized) yesterday. We have a DSL line with Motorola modem and Cisco Linksys WRT110 router with one Cat5-connect.  For a brief period the Toshiba could access the Internet thru the wireless (I registered the computer and the Norton AntiVirus.) Subsequently I "activated" or allowed the Toshiba to self-install Bluetooth (built in, but, it appears, not listed in the device manager).
Before the afternoon was over I found that the Toshiba, with WiFi antenna "on" effectively killed my Internet connection.  My Dell, which was hardwired thru the Cisco could not get to the Internet; my Mac, which works wirelessly, could not access the Internet.  When I turn the Toshiba's wireless antenna OFF, Internet access to the other two computers is restored within 45-60 seconds. This situation persisted after a "Restore to Factory" procedure this morning, where the Toshiba killed our Internet access during or shortly after the "configuring the desktop" portion of the hour-long restoration.
Another call to, and call-back from, Toshiba tech support resulted in their suggestions that 1) I should see if my computer crashes someone else's Internet connection and 2) that it must be the Cisco.
The Toshiba behaves itself when connected to the Cisco via Cat5 (as long as the wireless antenna is not turned on).
So, Cisco, Do I need a router upgrade to keep the Toshiba from killing my Internet connection?

I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a keyboard and screen for the Mac mini, using either the USB connector or Wi-Fi?

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi.  I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel.  Is is possible to hook these 2 up - iPad/mini, through Bluetooth?  I understand I need to use a regular monitor/keyboard/mouse on the initial install.

  • IChat AV not working when connecting wirelessly thru Netgear router

Ok, I have read nearly EVERY forum out there about this issue, and I have tried nearly everything. I even called Apple. Noone can seem to figure out what the deal is.
I have a Netgear WGR614 v5, and it is connected to a modem that I got from RoadRunner (Time Warner Cable).
My cousin, who has a Mac identical to mine, is set up in the same fashion with a Netgear router.
Neither of us can get a video connection using iChat. When we click the Accept button, it says "Connecting to ...." and then we both get an error that basically says there was a "communication error".
I was informed of an Apple test address that I could test it with. AIM username is appleu3test03. I added it to my iChat buddy list, and clicked on the camera icon, and voila! It connected and I get an iPhone video (which is what is supposed to happen)
So, what EXACTLY is that supposed to tell me???? The Apple test site says that means there is no problem with my connection, but that the issue is on my end somewhere....but I don't understand how that can be.
Anyway, I don't have ANY firewalls on, and it works when I am connected directly with an Ethernet cable.
    PLEASE!!! HELP!!
    Thanks

    Hi arvideo,
OK IS the UPnP on in this device ?
And no Port Forwarding or Services set ?
IS it the only device connected to the internet ? (is there another router or a modem ?)

When i connect to 2005 its working fine. But when i connect 2004 using this 2005 im getting error as "Connection to sbo common has failed".
One more question is ther any possibility to find whether the user has installed 2004 or 2005 using the SDK.please any one of u help to solve this problem.Im struggling with this.

    Regarding your second question:
Recently I surfed in the registry and wrote a function

    I haven't deployed this widely so I can't be 100% sure
it will work in all situations.
Therefore, I would be happy to receive everyone's

  • External wont stay connected thru airport

I have an external hard drive connected wirelessly thru my airport. I have always had issues with it staying connected, so much so they replaced my airport. Now that I have upgraded to SL, the problem has gotten way worse, it stays connected for maybe 20 minutes, then I have to restart in order to get it to connect again. Anyone have a work around for this? Or a better suggestion of how to connect it? I have the airport joining my wireless at&t network... Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, it connects via USB to the airport, but it uses the power of the airport. When I purchased the drive at the Apple store, they were aware that it was going to connected that way, so I hope thats not the reason! thanks!

  • G5 xserve connected to fibre switch using 2 cables

i have a G5 xserve and 2 xserve raid connected to a fibre switch. at this moment the xserve is connected using one cable but heard that using a second cable will improve performance (increased bandwidth). is this correct?
i remember reading that doing something like that will cause all raid volumes to show twice in finder

You can connect both cables. It will work fine. The double-volume "issue" was fixed in 10.3.4 I believe -- so that's info that's 3+ years out of date
You should see a performance increase doing this.

  • Xserve, G5, Xserve RAID and fibre channel question

    hi guys,
I have a Xserve conneted to Xserve RAID right now. Is it possible connect G5 to Xserve RAID thru fibre channel ? thanks

    >is it possible to do ?
Not in the way you describe, no.
The XServe RAID's 14 drives are connected to two separate controllers. Drives 1-7 are connected to the upper controller. Drives 8-14 are connected to the lower one.
If your XServe is currently connected to the upper controller it's talking to drives 1-7.
If you connect the G5 to the lower controller it will be talking to drives 8-14.
Therefore you cannot use this setup to backup the data via the G5.
At the very, very least you need a fiber channel switch so that both the XServe and the G5 can connect to the same controller. However, as Tod has already mentioned, it is tricky to get multiple machines talking to the same RAID drives while avoiding corruption (there's no concept of arbitration, or ways of preventing one machine from editing a file that's in use by the other machine).
You have two basic options - one is to implement XSAN, which will handle the arbitration issue, the other is to configure the G5 to mount the RAID read-only. This should prevent the G5 from modifying a file while it's in use by the XServe (which may be sufficient for backup purposes), but you may still run into issues when the G5 tries to backup a file that's actively in use by the XServe.
In all honesty, a better solution would either to get a SCSI card that works with the XServe and do it all there, or use file sharing between the XServe and the G5 and backup over the network - it'll be slower, but a lot more reliable.
