Connecting a 1994 HP Laserjet 4MP printer to my new iMac

Hello all. I just recently bought a new iMac, and I am having difficulty getting an older HP Laserjet 4MP printer to communicate properly with the iMac. I originally thought that I needed a parallel to usb cable, so I bought one of these, but the computer would work briefly for one print out and then fail to print again. I then read the printer's manual, and it indicates that if you are going to connect the printer to a macintosh computer you need to use a standard 8 pin localtalk cable. I still have my original localtalk cable from when I used to use this printer with an older powermac in the early 90s, but I cannot find on the internet, or in any stores, a female 8 pin to usb adapter.
Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on what I might try, or perhaps recommend a place to purchase the correct adapter / cable? I really like this printer and it has been working great, so I hate to get rid of it. Thanks in advance for any replies you all have. If I cannot come up with a solution I might just buy a new printer.

D. P.
I wouldn't bother with any 8 pin arrangement as that is putting a further complication in the chain.
The Keyspan USB to parallel adaptor cable is on this page.
http://www.keyspan.com/products/homepage.2.productList.Parallel.spml
I have used this cable on three Mac OS's (10.2, 10.3 and10.5) without the need to load any driver for it. The Mac seems to know what it is.
However, if you can send a page to the printer with what you have, then I am unsure, if what you have is sufficient, or if the keyspan version somehow handles the Input/Output data transfer better.
I am reluctant to advise you buying this if it is not going to change anything without first investigating if the driver you are using is causing this one page then stop behaviour.
When you click in Print and Fax, highlight the HP and where is says Kind it may say
Generic postscript Printer, whereas it would be better if if said GutenPrint v5.13.
However I did not have to do anything to get this setting, Leopard just found it.
You could select the printer again, with it switched on and in the left hand panel, control click and choose Reset printing System, as this may reset the driver to GutenPrint.
If that fails to set it, click on *Open Print Queue* ... then Info, then click on Driver and select GutenPrint v5.13 from the list, and see how that goes.

  • After upgrading to 10.6 I cannot use AppleTalk to connect to my HP LaserJet 4ML printer.

After upgrading to 10.6 I can no longer use AppleTalk to connect to my HP LaserJet 4ML printer. So I am now using a JetDirect 300X box connected to the parallel port of the printer and an ethernet cable into my Linksys router. But I have had no luck with this setup. I was able to get a printout from the JetDirect box that gave me the IP address of 184.35.129.151 which I tried using in the printer setup dialog box. No luck. My ethernet network IP is 192.168.1.100, so I tried putting in 192.168.1.2, etc. and 192.168.1.151 (151 being the JetDirect IP address). Still no luck. When I do the printer setup it seems to be finding the printer but when I try to print it cannot connect. I have also tried putting the ethernet cable from the JetDirect box directly into the other rear port on my MacPro. No difference.
The HP website clearly says that this printer can be connected to a Mac using the JetDirect box. But the configuration page that I printed out from the printer doesn't say anything about IP addresses and there is nothing in the manual about IP connection. Do I need to find the IP address of this printer, and how do I find that?
I would really like to continue to use this printer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry about that. Let's see what we can do. Take a look at this site:
    http://www.mikestechblog.com/joomla/networking-section/network-printing-category /52-how-to-configure-an-hp-jetdirect-300x-print-server.html
It's to set up on a Windows PC but just get an IP address at step 8. Then access the JetDirect's admin area using the IP address. Make the address fixed so your router cant change it. Then using System Preferences>Print & Fax you need to add the printer using the IPP protocol. If the IPP protocol doesn't work then try the HP JetDirect.
It's been a while since I had my HP LJ4MP set up that way so my memory is a bit fuzzy on it. Once you get it - it works. The only other thought is to get a cable with a 25 pin on one end and USB on the other.

  • HP LaserJet 4MP Printing Blank Pages

    Hi there,
This is perhaps OT, but a recent issue with my HP LJ 4MP is causing me great anguish and heartache.
Suddenly, for no apparent reason, my HP is producing blank pages. It just runs and runs spewing out blank pages.
I've tried all the IO resets and a cold reset. Unplugging and leaving idle. Unplugged the Asante bridge between the serial and the CAT 5.
After a while I can get it to stop printing blank pages, it works fine for a while, then the interminable blank pages start again.
Has anyone seen such an issue? Any known resolution?
    Thanks a bunch,
    Matthew

    Matthew,
I too use HP LaserJet 4MP and AssanteTalk Bridge connected to computer via ethernet crossover cable and link from Assante to both my LJ4MP and HPDeskJet855cse, using BelKin QuikNet adapters in a string using RJ11 jumper cables.
My HP driver software is HP8.1.1.
    I Never use "BackGround Printing".
I Never use "DeskTop Print Monitor".
The only time I can remember multiple blank copies is when I used to use "Print Monitor and BackGround Printing".
Clear your preferences and get rid of Print Monitor and Don't use BackGround Printing.
    HTH.......Bob

  • Can't connect to my HP Laserjet 5 printer anymore

I moved into my newly built house, and after setting back up my home office, I can no longer connect to my (i know it is old) HP Laserjet 5 printer with my iMAc, running OS x 10.6.8.
I am on a small in house network, and can't even see the printer, let alone add it.
    Any help please?

Mac OS X 10.6 does not support AppleTalk, so you are not going to "see" the printer in the Default Add Printer view. Instead you will need to add the printer using an IP protocol like HP Jetdirect-Socket and by entering the IP address of the printer. Have a read of this post in the Lion forum about connecting the LJ 5, in particular Matt Broughton's response.

  • Can't print to my new imac...

I have purchased a new imac running system 10.7.5. I have a hp5500dn color laserjet printer that is connected via ethernet cable directly to the computer. I can print to that printer only if I turn off the wi-fi connection. Once I am online I cannot print. Any suggestions?

I understand what wi-fi support is, I misunderstood the question. The printer does not have wi-fi, it is too old. I connect it with an ethernet cable. It worked on my G5, but now with my new imac it will only work if I turn off the wi-fi on the computer.. I'm pretty sure it is a problem with the ip addresses or as Linc suggested, the subnet, but I don't know anything about changing that.

  • Printer Problems with New iMac

I have a new iMac.  My printer is an HP 2550 Series color laser printer.  When I send a print job, the queue says that it is waiting for the printer to become available and just turns.  If I turn the printer off, then on, the print job is done.I have been to HP & Apple tech support to no avail.  Any help?

There is a possibility that HP has a software update that is available through Apple software update.  I've gotten more than a dozen software updates from Canon regarding my year and a half old printer.  Like you, when I first installed my printer I experienced a few silly glitches until  a few updates came through. The customer service people are often not even aware of the updates concerning Apple products.  Anyhow, it's easy to check

  • Printer with my new iMac

I got a new iMac but kept my old printer; a HP. Apple did all the transfer from the old mac to the new, including the printer. The printer is fine for printing documents, but it will not scan. Before, as part of my HP I had something called photo scan;;;;a separate application. Now that is gone and there is no scanning.
Should I reinstall my printer to this new Mac, or is there some reason why it is not compatible with it? Apple said they would not reinstall anything that wasn't compatible so maybe that's why the HP scan is missing. Will it hurt anything if I uninstall what's here now and reinstall or am I just not able to scan anymore?

I see you're listing Leopard 10.5 as your OS, and posting in the Tiger 10.4 forum!?
Lots of Printer/Scanner drivers got broken in 10.5, especially hp!
See if hp has a new driver for that for Leopard.

  • HP LaserJet 1320n printing problems -upgrading PPC iMac -10.3.9 to 10.5.4

I just upgraded my girlfriend's iMac (lampshade 1.25GHz PPC G4 - 1 gig RAM - 160gig HD - SuperDrive) from 10.3.9 to 10.5.4, did all the usual prep work before and after - upgrade went smoothly even her Citrix client for logging into work works great!
Only hassle is can't get her HP LaserJet 1320n to work - was working just fine before.
    * btw one of the updates installed was the HP Printer Driver 1.1
    * the 1320n is on a Ethernet network (hooked up to the iMac via a 5 port hub - Asante I think..)
    * set up in Print and Fax goes fine - Drivers are there -sets up via Bonjour - printer status shows green - idle before sending a print job
    * send a print job unfortunately gets you a loop of " Connecting " for several minutes, then the job fails and it sez will retry. never works.
    * tried multiple times (restarted the system - reset the printer - same result). Launching Utility opens a browser window with a URL - never connects, that fails as well
    * I seem to remember when I set this up 3 years ago having to go via the browser to set up some settings - of course I can't remember what I did - HP's pathetic website is not any help and their support is gone fishing for the weekend
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Nigel
ps printing out the test page via the Go button on the 1320 (pressed for 5 seconds) doesn't get the expected config settings page but a one page quasi - marketing test page with no config info on it....aargh - I hate HP!

  • Can't install drivers from HP for laserjet 1022 printer on my new computer with Windows 7.

I have a laserjet 1022.  I can't install the HP drivers provided on the HP website onto my new computer.  When it asks me to connect the printer, the printer is recognized, however the message continues to say waiting for the connection.  I have tried all of the suggestions listed on the forum by both HP and other individuals, including down loading the drivers from other countries.  Other attempts when downloading the drivers ends up with a message saying that the download could not be completed.  I have tried other USB cables and that doesn't work.  I love HP products but I really need help on this one.  HELP!

    Hello DayTrader,
When you connect the printer and if the message continues to say "Waiting for Connection", please try the below step..
Go to Device Manager, ( to do so , Right click on Computer icon, Select Manage, from the left pance m click on Device Manager , which would display the Device Manager on right pane.)
There should be Yellow bang entries ( Yellow ! mark ) with printer name on it.
Right Click on each of them and select Update Driver.
Select "Browse my Computer for driver software "
Click on Browse button to point to the CD ( if you are using the CD to run the installation ) else copy the path where the drivers have been extracted if you had downloaded it. Usually it will be in folder with name starting 7z... under TEMP folder .
    Then Click Next button .

  • Help[: Laserjet 1300: Printing blank pages (new cartridge & drivers installed)

Hi All, printer keeps printing blank pages, just bought a new cartridge and even re-installed the drivers- can anyone perhaps advise as to a way to resolve as I am urgently needing to print?

Forgot to mention that I am not getting an error message either, except when I go through the motions of scanning the (blank) alignment page.  That error is related to the fact that it is blank though.
    Thanks for any assistance.

  • Cannot get PC to print through my new iMac, Please help!

I am new to the Apple operating system and computers. Just purchased a 20" iMac and I am having issues getting my laptop PCs to print. The printer is a HP Officejet 7310 All in One and is hooked up via usb to the iMac. The iMac prints no problem. I installed Bonjour on my PC and it located the printer no problem. I set it up and it is now available in my printer list. I set it as a default and try to print a test page and nothing happens. Printer sharing is turned on on the iMac and I have disabled the firewall completely on the PC. Any thoughts on what I might be missing?

    Thanks for all the help!
