Connecting a Broadcast Monitor

Hello,
I'm sure this post MUST exist in these discussions, but I seem hopeless at searching. I'm looking for a way to connect a Sony PVM-20L1 to my Intel Mac Pro for use with FCS. I assume using the Y/C input is best, but how does it connect to my Mac Pro? Ok, I know this is probably a really dumb question, but I don't know the answer.
Also, I'm using this page http://www.lafcpug.org/phorum/read.php?11,152712,170810 (further down towards the bottom) to calibrate the monitor. Do those instructions look adequate? Anything to add?
Mainly, I'm just previewing my titles, but I want to eventually get better at color correction.
Thanks,
Lawrence
PS, sorry, but I don't know how to insert a hyperlink into text here either!

Going off previous advice, I got the PVM because my main concern was monitoring my titles, but I wanted to be able to accurately monitor color in future. I suppose I should have looked into the resolution more.
Yes, the PVM has S-video inputs, but no component. I am using the HVX200 for a couple of reasons. . . one is future-proofing as I will have very little which will actually require HD initially, but the second reason is that I really like the DTE capabilities with the Firestore. And, everyone seemed to rave about it as I was moving from a serious hobby to a business, this would let me grow my skill set into this (I do know that the learning curve will be very deep).
So, to use DVCPRO50, I would have to down-res for the monitor? Would I be able to do that using the Intensity Pro (it does say that it has S-video)?
Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys, I know I'm just a noobie at all this, but I appreciate your help and suggestions.

  • Question Connecting SD broadcast monitor with MXO2 LE Max

    Greetings,
So I just rec'd my new Matrox MX02 LE Max and connected it - installed drivers off website tried to connect my SD broadcast monitor (via S video cable) and it appears that I'm getting no signal. FCP is not finding it when i connect. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for any help here.

    Hi -
After you installed the Matrox software, did you restart your computer?
Make sure you are connected via the host cable form the PCIe card and your Mac Pro. Is the LE pluged into AC and powered on? There is a small button on the back of the LE next to where the host cable plugs in. Press it and see if the blue LED is visible on the front of the LE.
Open System Preferences by going to the menu Apple Menu > System Preferences.
Do you see the Martox MXO2 Preferences icon in the "Other" section?
Open the preferences to configure your system.
Once you've done that, Open FCP and see if the Matrox Output options are there.
    Hope this helps.

  • DVI to Video adapter CRT Broadcast Monitor? Is there a better option?

I am a freelance motion graphics artist, and I use Final Cut Studio, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.
I need a CRT monitoring solution for checking my color grades, etc.
SD resolution is fine, and i've got my eye on a JVC TMH-150CGU broadcast monitor from B&H. It has an S-Video (Y/C) input.
I'm thinking of using the Apple DVI Video Adapter hook up to it via S-Video.
I have a Pantone Eye-One that I can use to calibrate the monitor.
Would this setup work ok in the above applications? Will it support Digital Cinema Desktop Preview in Final Cut?
I have the 30" Apple display. Will connecting the CRT via DVI steal 256mb of my video memory???? That seems drastic considering it's already driving a 30" display AND running after effects!!
I've thought about FireWire monitoring, but I suspect the FireWire/DV 4:1:1 compression will affect the colors.
I know a CAPTURE CARD would be ideal, with SDI, etc... but I don't really have a need for a full blown capture card at the moment. I don't think use it to it's full potential (ie- to capture). It seems silly spending $$$$ just for a monitoring solution.
Or is a capture card my only option for pro monitoring? If I was to buy one, i'd want a future proof one should I digitize in the future (ie, HD, with analog support), so that leaves either a Blackmagic Intensity Pro (which I believe is only 8 bit) or a BlackMagic Decklink HD Extreme. And then i'd also need the SDI or Component expansion card for the JVC monitor, and before I know it, i've spent over $1000, just for a decent monitoring solution. Ouch.
I strongly considered the Intensity Pro card, because I could monitor SD component, and HDMI HD from the same card. But it put me off when I heard it ws only 8 bit. But it is 4:2:2 though.
What might KILL the Apple DVI adapter option is I have a TON of PAL footage, and I heard the adapter is NTSC only (or a seperate PAL version). So even though the monitor supports both standards, the adapter doesn't. Or so I've heard.
Very confused. Any other options or advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
From the sound of things you have answered your own question.
If you wanted a CRT to just check video playback, safe areas and text legibility then a cheap option of monitoring via a deck or camera would suffice.
You mention a lot of PAL footage just as a FYI this would be 4:2:0 as opposed to 4:1:1 with NTSC under the DV codec.
You don't mention (and I'm sorry if I missed it) what codec you output to. I had always found when working with DV only that a DV monitoring solution was sufficient for most applications.
However as you indicate that colour plays a factor in the equation bite the bullet and get a decent monitoring system from the off. I am using the Decklink Extreme and have found it to be excellent especially in real time conversion and monitoring of HD to SD.
In addition you get the ability to work all the way up to 10bit (drives allowing) and capture over SDI with full deck control.
You could stagger the cost since the BM card will let you monitor composite out in addition to component so the expansion board for the CRT might not be a must have from the get go for you.
Whatever route you go you will want to calibrate the CRT using broadcast colour bars rather than a Pantone system, theres plenty of info on the web regarding this . . and why.

  • No Signal from Timeline to External Broadcast Monitor

I've been running FCP 6.0.1 for about three months with no problems until just recently when I lost timeline signal to my external JVC broadcast monitor. Log and capture work fine and All Frames is selected in the View menu.

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Tear/rupture in viewed frame on broadcast monitor

I'm new to Colour and still finding my way a bit but having completed my first project on it the biggest let down was that I could never preview my grades on my broadcast monitor without a horizontal tear (rupture) appearing across the viewed frame.
I used the cursor keys to scroll through the clips I was trying to grade, and now and again the image would resolve itself into a full frame, but more often than not the top third of the image seemed to relate to a frame two or three frames either side of where the playhead was located. This problem becomes even more pronounced when I'm trying to toggle the grade on and off.
Also, if I try and make use of the 'frame store' function that allows you to composite stored frames over your current grade in order to get maintain consistency across scenes, I end up with a kaleidoscopic effect where up to 4 different images are mashed together in an incomprehensible mess. I've tried adjusting settings in the 'frame store room' - angle and the position of the comp - but it doesn't really help.
I'm outputting at 10bit PAL to my JVC crt broadcast monitor via a Kona 3 and connecting using SDI.
Any help would be great. Thanks

I'm still not sure what your source media codec is, but it sounds as though it isn't HDV.
If there is a mis-match between the source codec and the output that you have requested, there might? be an issue -- and the basic fact that it is an nVidia card, which are infamous for not supporting anything beyond 8-bit, makes me suspicious, as well. What is listed, and as a minimum, may not afford optimum performance, to put it euphemistically.
I'm looking for ways that the media could get jumbled up, and the GPU, doing the lion's share of picture processing, is always the prime suspect. Dust for fingerprints, get a DNA sample.

  • Broadcast monitor and FW hub

hello - I have the macbook pro with the 1 firewire output. I want to have a FW400 harddrive with my media hooked up to it, but i also want my camcorder hooked up to the computer to act as a convertor so i can use a broadcast monitor. my question is, can I make both devices (camera and harddrive) work with the only 1 FW port on my laptop? If I use a FW hub, will that slow down the speed of the firewire connection? what will happen? If I got the 17 macbook pro with the 2 fw ports, do those ports act independently? thanks!

ok jerry, thank you so much. if you don't mind, i have one last question (honestly). so here are my devices for my station.
    1. laptop with 1 fw400 drive (soon to also have the cardbus fw800)
    2. external 400/800 lacie drive
    3. videocamera for use as deck / convertor for monitor
    4. external monitor for color correction etc.
how would you say is the best way to connect all these for editing / capturing? i want to just edit 4X3 SD and capture to the external.

  • Broadcast Monitor

    Ok,
I'm afraid I didn't understand much in the other posts about broadcast monitors. But perhaps someone can lay out a simple, easy to understand suggestion for me.
I want to be able to preview my titles (from FCP AND photoshop CS3, Motion, & Livetype) before I've burned them to DVD and figure out they're not as expected. I'm working with some books to help me improve my skills in those areas, but they're all suggesting a broadcast monitor for previewing.
I see a lot about color correction as well, so I'm sure that's something I'll be interested in as I learn to use Color.
I want to keep my budget below around $3,000 and would like to get a monitor and the card for connecting (blackmagic intensity pro?). Am I on the right track? Can anyone make a suggestion for me here?
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

Hey, Shane. I just read your "little frog" review of the mxo. The single monitoring issue w/the mxo felt like a deal breaker to me. In other words, I have a Dell vgi monitor connected to my G5 (couldn't afford an Apple Cinema Display), and a basic, consumer panasonic tv that I'm using as my 2nd monitor (connected via a sony dvmc-da2) to view external video. I was thinking the mxo would prevent external video editing, since it would be connected to and pertain only to my Dell vgi monitor right? But then the last adendum you put in your little frog article said:
"It was asked that if you use the MXO with your, say G5 tower or Mac Pro, that you might lose the use of that monitor as your second monitor. Not necessarily. With your monitor connected to the MXO, it still passes thru a desktop image, so you can have dual monitors. But when you hit VIEW>ALL FRAMES it will then turn the monitor into your production monitor, ready for color correcting your footage."
Am I reading this correctly? Would this mean that I could purchase an mxo, and set it up in such a manner that I could connect it to my Dell vgi monitor yet have the signal feed to the Panasonic and thereby view my FCP image there under broadcast quality specifacations?
Sorry if I'm way off on this interpretation, Shane. I'm generally pretty dense, and it takes me various passes through any bit of information before I "get it".
    Thanks,
    Javier

  • Broadcast monitor via DeckLink

I use a double monitor system 19" and 24". I also have a broadcast monitor when grading in Final Cut Pro connected via a DeckLink SDI card. Is there a way to connect this third PAL monitor to Shake without loosing the other two computer monitors?

    In the Decklink control panel...

  • Ikegami broadcast monitor-Mac won't send 1080p DVI signal

I'm trying to use an Ikegami HLM-1750WR broadcast monitor connected over DVI with my Mac Pro. It seems the display isn't sending any information to the mac, because 1080P is not an option, and 1080i looks awful. I've tried using SwitchRes X to specify 1080P, and it works—except the entire image is shifted over two inches to the right, leaving a quarter of the image off the edge of the screen. I tried tinkering with the settings, but can't get it to change. Anyone have any tricks to get this to work?

In reality, the projectors that show the work I'm working on (local Indie films) are connected over DVI-and that's if I'm lucky. Otherwise, its some cheap home projector connected to a DVD player over composite, so in reality DVI is useful for what I'm doing. Also, the monitor in question is far superior to the 9 year old dell I usually have attached, so its a worthwhile project in that sense too.
Alternate workflows aside, does anyone know a way to force 1080p output?
I know that SDI is better, but it would also be enlightening to know why exactly that is.

  • Possible to connect an external monitor to HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC

I have a HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC model # A1M02AV and it has a VGA port, one that looks like a phone/broadband cable port, and one that looks like a USB port but indented on either side at the bottom. Can I even connect an external monitor? How do I find out if I have more than 1 video card? Besides the usual USB/headphone ports, I don't have any other ports. It says my drivers are up to date...but I don't even know what I should be looking for. Do I need to install something or buy some sort of adapter?
I am trying to connect a Dell external montitor via the VGA port with a VGA cable. The monitor has power but my notebook does not recognize/detect it. However, when I first plugged it in, my notebook display shrank into a square (vs the whole screen) so it recognized something...but nothing happened on the external monitor.
I tried detecting it via my display settings, but  I accidentally changed some dispaly setting so that the home desktop only shows on monitor 1, but unselected my actual notebook display or something or changed it to be monitor 2 (even though monitor 1 does not exist), so when I plug the cable in to my notebook, all of a sudden my desktop goes away and it's a just a blank background screen - and I cannot access the computer display settings or anything.... when the cable is unplugged this setting looks normal, so I can't figure out how to fix it.
Sorry, I have no idea what I'm doing here - please help!

    Hi,
All Dell monitors come with CD's for drivers. Your laptop may not know the monitor w/o its driver, it won't install automatically. Please check:
Ringht click a blank space on desktop,
    Click Personalize
    Click Display
    Click Change display settings
Can you see BOTH laptop screen and external monitor in there as shown on the following image:
For testing, I put my Dell monitor is my main display. If I can't see 2 monitor, you need its driver first and then check the cable.
    Regards.

I connected an external monitor to my MacBook Pro, but it doesn't open any programs. It Just sits there with a blank screen.  How do I get it to open programs and act like a monitor?

    Dear Jean:
It sounds like you are trying to get your external monitor to act as the primary viewing screen. For example it would have your Doc, Icons, Etc. In order to make the external monitor the primary screen you have to:
    Open System Preferences.
    Choose the Displays Icon
There will be several tabs to choose from pick Arrangement
Drag the toolbar to desired display
Let me know if this helps at all!

    Hi,
What is the model/product of your AIO machine ? I many cases, you can't use HDMI port to connect to a TV because it is HDMI IN port. You need USB - HDMI converter/adapter to connect to a TV (or monitor).
