Connecting a Community Center in Cape Town, South Africa

Hi,
I'm working with a team of students in parternship with the One Laptop Per Child initiative.
We will be traveling to Cape Town, South Africa to distribute ~100 laptops.
I am the "tech guy" of the group of three and am in charge of networking the community center.
What router would you suggest? What else should I be thinking about? I've only worked with routers in a home/small business environment.

3G Speeds in Cape Town South Africa - False Advertising

About 7 months ago I decided to upgrade to a Blackberry, not knowing much about them I did my research and was also advised by many store sales exec's that the Bold is the way to go as it is 3G! I coughed up and financed the other portion for the hand set (still paying monthly) to get this great device.
I will mention it is a great device and I love it, BUT I cannot accept that it is advertised as 3G, I pay for 3G but do not DO NOT get the benefit if it.
The Blackberry.net APN is useless. It is so slow it is actually not usable!
The worst part is that when I switch over to the general 3G network on the internet APN and use the device as a modem (which I pay for) the speed is magnificent.
Question: How can Blackberry / Vodacom advertise 3G, charge a premium for the device and then not deliver the service?
I paid for 3G and want 3G speed or I may as well have bought a Curve.
All I get from Vodacom is that you are aware of the speed issues and are looking into it? Mean while I have very limited usage and I am paying for something I cannot effectively use!!!

Sorry to be so negative on my openeing post, but i LOVE my phone and am very fustrated by the poor service in this country. PLEASE can i be pointed in the correct direction?

It is not the correct forum.. This is a RIM and BlackBerry community support forum. Volunteers here provide device and RIM software help to other users... peer-to-peer, if you will.
RIM has no control over the Vodafone network and what they provide as 3G signals across their territory.
The device is 3G, and in my experience on the Bold with 3G in my area, it is absolutely great.
Your issue is with Voda, not RIM.

Skype Number: No area code for Cape Town, South Af...

On the drop down for skype number area code selection for south africa, Cape Town does not appear, only Joburg, Pretorai and Durban.
Cape Town is the 'mother' city - the legislative capital of SouthAfrica. There should be no pronvicial restrictions like with US states, so why no area code?

Unfortunately, if the particular exchange you wish to have for a Skype Number does not appear on the list, then it is truly not available for any number of legitimate reasons. Check back periodically to see if the exchange becomes available; Skype does not announce when a fresh batch of Skype Numbers are newly added.

I am going to Cape Town South africa in March. Does my Ipad have a converter to change from 220 volts to 110 volts or do I need to purchase a converter?

You just need an adapter kit to work with the charger to have the correct pins.

Apple update server in South Africa

To my understanding, Software Update contacts the international server, and then redirects the connection to a nearer update server (in South Africa) when downloading. If the international update server index file is at "swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/index-1.sucatalog", does anyone perhaps know the South African address? (or Where could I find it? or Who should I ask?)
We have very limited bandwidth in South Africa, and my blended (international and local) internet cap runs dry very quickly. I then have access to local cap that I would like to use to update OSX.

I just checked the list of countries at the bottom of the iTunes store home page and South Africa is listed. It is only an App Store (no music and videos).
Be sure you have the latest iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) and try again.

N73 / PC suite / communication center / import con...

Hi,
I downloaded my contacts from my N73 in CSV format. I edited the CSV. Now when I try to import this file via pc suite/ communication center the program crashes ("communication center stopped working, windows vista is trying to find a solution blah blah").
I have latest pc suite 7.0.9.2, connecting with USB cable (also just been updated).
Any ideas?

E71: Communication Center fails to load SMS messag...

I have an E71, which I connect to my laptop and use to update my Calendar etc. I also read and reply to SMS from the Messages option of the communication Center.
However, the messages fail to load intermittently, whereas other things like Contacts and Calendar load properly.
I have tried reinstalling the software , but it doesn't work.

I normally set "memory card" to work and store my all messages, and I do backup (*.npu file, right?) for both internal and SD card memory (I select all when functioning "Back up" in PC suite) to my notebook using PCsuite from time to time. With this, could you tell me where can I check and open my messages in my notebook. I just want to make sure that folders under "My folders" under "Messaging" menu are really backed up and can be opened by my notebook.
Besides, in case that I use my microSD card to work with my all messages, at least I should be able to locate where all messages are kept, shouldn't I? Could you advise how can I locate such files by "File manager" function?

My n85 got the same problems I got 3573 message in my inbox.. i am thinking to store the msg and reformat my phone.. but the NCC just show my MMS..
Solution:
I unplug the cable n restart the NCC connected with bluetooth. It show me text message.
New problems:
It only show up to 3252 message.
I want to store the message. I tried to store it in cvs form, but it doesn't record the time. vmg file does record the time But it need to store one by one

My problem is that when I click on the communication center messages, all my Arabic messages appear as garbage. The same messages appear fine on the phone.

Now when I log into Itunes I can see the music/movies i had originally purchased but I cannot access it on my South African Iphone. Is this something that can be fixed? or do i need to go back to being in the uk on my devices?

Did you make sure that the Control Center Agent is running on your database server?
Test it by running the show_service.sql or service_doctor.sql as user OWBSYS. The scripts can be found in directory +$OWB_HOME/owb/rtp/sql+. If the CCA is down or wrongly configured, e.g. you changed OWBSYS' password after installation, such that it can't connect, the service_doctor script will tell you. Please correct any errors or misconfigurations and start the CCA afterwards using the start_service.sql script from the same directory.

It does not go to sleep anymore; but when switch on; there appears a flickering band of lines on the screen which last for about 20 seconds before the machines starts to work normally.
It seems there is still a screen problem!
We had to send it back again.
The other problem is that you just get no communication out of the Core workshop and you cannot communicate with the technician.
They had still not provide a technical report in spite of repeated discussion with the manager of Incredible Connections.

Sounds like the graphics card might be the problem. Run the Hardware Test in extended mode. If you get an error it can be trusted, but getting a negative may not be all that meaningful. Bring it back to them and let them check out the machine again.

You cannot transfer content between two accounts. The sooner you make the conversion, the better. Just pick the new one and start using it(buying music etc).
*A lot of people open new accounts when their email changes or they have a new email. You can just access your apple id account and change the primary email that you use to log in along with other details.

I just read another post that says you can go into a game that allows for multiple players and utalizes game center and enter your account information that way. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to work for others that had this issue.
