Connecting a Gateway M-Series Laptop to Airport Extreme

Seem to be having a little issue with getting my laptop to connect on the Extreme. I have my Imac connected directly to the Base station with an eithernet cable and have a dsl modem going into the base station. I want to wirelessly connect the laptop that is running Vista Ultimate. When I connect it stays on for about 30min just fine then all of a sudden the base station light goes to amber and then reboots it self. Then my laptop will connect again. I cant seem to figure out what would cause this. Anyone have any ideas?

does anyone know if there's anyway to connect a USB printer and an external HD to a single airport extreme base station simultaneously???

Welcome to the support community group.
First, are you sure that your AirPort Extreme has been configured correctly and is properly connected to your modem?
Begin by telling us how you have things connected and if the Airport Extreme is replacing a previously owned router or is this an entirely new installation?
First be sure that your modem is working and properly connects you to the internet using an ethernet cable directly connected to your laptop. Once you're sure that's working, reset the AirPort to factory defaults by disconnecting it from power and pressing and holding in the small reset button on the back for 15 - 20 seconds while you reconnect it to power. Then turn everything off for 5 minutes. Connect the Airport to your modem with and ethernet cable to the Airport WAN port on the back (check the user guide to make sure you connect the cable to the correct port) then connect a second ethernet cable between the laptop and one of the LAN ports on the AirPort Extreme.
Then power up the modem first, wait 5 minutes and then power up the Airport, wait 5 minutes and finally power up your laptop.
Then run the airport configuration utility from your laptop. Since you're not using an Apple computer, be sure that all of your firewall, and virus blocking and checking software is disabled before you run the airport configuration utility. Once you run the utility, it should detect your AirPort and allow you to use the configuration wizard to set things up.
Check back if you're still having problems.

I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?

Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.

I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...

Can't connect to internet via MacBook Pro to Airport Extreme

I can't connect to internet via MacBook Pro to Airport Extreme. I reset AE and modem (power down and back up again). Some computers on my home network will connect fine and others won't. The ones that won't don't populate the DNS server or the Search Domains. AE shows up on all the machines. I have one computer also connect to AE via ethernet and it has the same symptoms. Why do some Macs connect and others don't. Even when I get them to connect when I shutdown or put in sleep mode over night I lose the internet connection and have to start all over. Very frustrating.

Regrettably no replies. I have struggled with this for days with no success and I have given up on the Airport Extreme. I have found several other Forum posts with very similar problems and no one seems to have a solution to this. It seems other wireless routers work better than the Apple product. I was able to get my old Linksys wireless router reset and it is set up and working well. The Linksys router does populate the DNS servers and domains where as the AE does not. Apple engineers should look into this. If I am mistaken and there is a fix for this someone please let me know, otherwise my AE will probably appear on Ebay very soon.

There are two probably causes:
Your ISP is blocking the port used by Entourage to send mail and the ISP used by the other wireless networks is not.
OR
Your ISP doesn't like OS X's default MTU seting of 1500. If this were the case it should also affect any large file transfers you try to make from your Mac to the Internet.

I cannot get past Gateway PING when connecting Samsung BD player to Internet via Airport Extreme?

I have now been trying for 2 days to get my Samsung 3d BD Player to connect to my wireless iinternet (via VIVID WIRELSS) in Australia. I am using an Airport Extreme Base Station WIRED to the BD Player and wirelessly connecting to the WiFi. The Network Test shows Ok for MAC and IP, Gatewy, DNS etc... but wont get to the Internet test because it stalls at Gateway Ping. I have tried all of the various setup changes - Auto, manual, changing the adresses but noting works. Sometimes it takes longer to fail the Gateway Ping (when I put in the WAN settings as opposed to the LAN settings but none work.I know I have the correct info in my WiFi setup with the password and security etc... Is this just an incompatibility between Samsung and Apple? It worked fine with my Pioneer player and also my Panasonic Player? Any help gratefully accepted!!!

I assume that these results are coming from the Samsung BD player's network administration interface ... correct?
When configured to join another wireless network, the Extreme is also reconfigured as a bridge. That means all IP address information must come from the upstream router that is providing DHCP server services ... so the Samsung is actually testing the upstream router's connectivity to the Internet, not the Extreme's.
I am venturing to guess that if you plug the BD player directly into the upstream router, it would not have any issues connecting. So, this would confirm my earlier statement that Ethernet ports on the Extreme are not enabled.
I would further guess that if you connected the Extreme directly to the upstream router by Ethernet and configure it for both Wireless Mode = Create an wireless network and Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode), that the BD player would get the proper IP addresses it needs for Internet connectivity.

have just got an airport extreme and have managed to connect to it and access internet fine with my macbook. I'm using WPA/WPA2 Personal encryption with an 8 character password. After finding the network equivalent password (a 64 character Hex key) I managed to get my housemates Vista laptops connected. HOWEVER, when I go to enter this into my friends XP laptop (connected through a Netgear wireless receiver), it will not let me as the 64 character key is 1 character too long - do I just enter the original 8 character password?

Is the password you are using limited to letters and numbers - no punctuation or other strange characters?
This really should work. The fact it doesn't suggests to me that some other setting is not being chosen correctly. As I mentioned this above select "WPA Personal" with TKIP (not AES) encryption. As a second choice, select "WPA2 Personal". Make sure the WinXP software drivers for its wireless interface are up to date.

Connect to broadband wireless, but not through Airport Extreme b/g

I have had an Airport Extreme BS working as a Gateway to my Wireless Broadband service since last July. The AEBS has been providing internet to a WinXP laptop, and an iMac running OSX 10.5.2. This has been working well since installed.
My Wireless Broadband is provided by Rogers and known as 'portable internet'. The Modem/antenna is the Motorola 'Expedience' device for outside perm installation.
Suddenly about 2 weeks ago, perhaps 3, we started experiencing problems. We would have fine performance for chunks of time, interrupted by complete internet connectivity loss. I would go through all the motions of reset on AEBS, on the service provider 'modem' and on the clients. Sometimes we got it back, mostly not.
I found that it looked like the DHCP setup on the AEBS wasn't reliable, in that the AEBS would sometimes get an address from the service provider, and sometimes not. This would then cause a failure of gateway and dns provision to the clients.. so everthing would fall apart.
Plugging a client directly into the service provider ALWAYS succeeded in getting an IP and DNS address. I've spent about 12 hours total on the phone to Rogers at this point, and from their side, working through detailed tests with me, say that they are reliebaly connecting to me, and reliably seeing me get ip/dns.
This leads me to believe that my AEBS has somehow been effected by an update, and now is having troubles handling the role of internal (private-side) dns and dhcp provider, or possibly that it's internal routing from private to public sides is somewhat in fault.
I didn't keep any records, but this would correlate with a number of updates i ran on the Airport utilities, and possibly with an OSX update i received automatically.

Does Apple listen to these forums, and if so, perhaps it's time to give us an update eh? A little bit of collaboration to save us all this massive headache would be appreciated. Just ask and i'll give you all the information i can dump.

I have taken your advice and reverted to DHCP from the AEXP do the address assignment to both Expresses, and I have taken great care with the WDS setup, but still it doesn't work.
Looking at the logs on the WDS main, this is what I see (the station referred to being the WDS remote):
May 10 19:49:34          Severity:5          Deauthorizing station 00:11:24:01:15:97 [2]
May 10 19:49:54          Severity:5          Deauthenticated with station 00:11:24:01:15:97 (4-way timeout)
(This is even with a solid green on both Expresses.)
HOWEVER: I have just tried rebooting both of them - main followed by remote - and now they seem to have realised what they're supposed to be doing and both have IP addresses.   This is on my desk. The next step is to see whether I can get an IP address on a device attached by wire.
They do say patience is a virtue. I can testify to that being true with WDS!

Windows 7 laptop "sees" Airport Extreme, but Airport not communicating

Airport Extreme is access point to internet in our home, and has been working fine with all Apple products and my husband's Windows laptop.... until he was forced to update to Windows 7 (work laptop). Now, although he can physically see the Airport Extreme, it fails to accept the internet key (password) from his laptop. The key he attempts to use is the same as the one I use to gain internet access from my MacBook Pro - and the password has been verified (Safari/Preferences/Passwords) to be correct - not just from memory. Anyone else with this issue? Thanks for your input.

This means that you are not connected merely seeing the network.
Have entered (i think) all detailed at iFelix

You can confirm it is a WEP issue, by turning WEP off, can you now connect?
Are you using MAC Address Access Control? If so have you added the PC's MAC address to the Access List?
Are there any settings i need to make in IE Tools

It might also be worthwhile checking your internet settings
Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options
Click the Connections tab
Ensure that the Never dial a connection is checked.
Click LAN Settings
and check that all the settings are unchecked (especially the proxy server settings)...
What are your TCP/IP settings?
They should be Obtain IP and DNS information automatically.

How to connect a pc via Ethernet to an Airport Extreme

For about a year I have had an Airport Extreme running my iBook laptop on wifi and the iMac on Ethernet. I also have an IBM Thinkpad (T/P) running Windows 2000 which I wanted to connect via Ethernet cable to the AE and get on the internet to use various ham radio applications written for peecee's only. So far I have not been able to get the T/P to connect to the web, trying every way to get the thing to connect. The T/P is a second hand unit from work and I have no manual for it. There is also little documentation in the AE booklet concerning Ethernet and non-Mac gear. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can make this work, or another website that may have more specific info?

You are absolutely right about nothing with Windows being easy..... The ethernet cable is plugged in and I went to Network Connections and followed the wizard. Now I have a small icon on the right side of the bottom bar, looks like two computer screens but only one is green. A right click on it says the local area network is connected and sending 100 Mbps but receiving zero. If I go to Tools/Internet options, I can go thru the Internet Connection wizard for setting up a LAN. One of the pages asks to configure the proxy settings and has two choices: automatic discovery or "Use automatic configuration script" with a box labeled "Address". I don't know what to put in this address but have tried the IP address and the router address: no joy.There is also a check box for Manual Proxy server and I have tried both Yes and No....again, no joy. It's as though the T/P sees the internet doorway but can't bring anything back thru the door! Any further ideas sure would help. Thanks!

What is the best way to set up my 6th Generation AirPort Extreme (A1521) to my cable modem as a wireless router and then connect my 3rd Generation Time Capsule (A1355) to my AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender? I live in a small 1 story house and I currently have the Airport Extreme connected to my cable modem in the living room and the Time Capsule plugged into the wall in my bedroom. I am able to wirelessly connect to the internet using the AirPort Extreme as my router and I can also do wireless back ups to my Time Capsule. My problem is that my connection seems to be really slow! My 1TB Time Capsule back up is only half way complete and it has been 3 days! My computer has been backing up all day and night for almost 72 hours and its still not even 75% complete. I have backed up to this Time Capsule in the past and it never took this long. I am thinking that when I set up my AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule using AirPort Utility I must have set it up incorrectly or something.
How do I set up my Airport Extreme and Time Capsule for the fastest possible internet speed and back up speed?

AirPort Utility 5.6 works with AirPort Extreme 802.11g base stations.
It works with N version airports.
It will also show details of the AC model but cannot be used for the setup.. mostly.
I purposely got the new 6th Gen Airport Extreme so my internet connection would be a lot faster!
Your network will be much faster when you have AC client directly connected to the AE. Older client will go no faster.. but what is worse.. extend wireless is mixing new and old wireless standards.. guess what one wins.. OLD.. So when you extend wireless.. you have no improvement whatsoever. This whole post is about extending wireless.. so you cannot extend to older equipment and do any better.. maybe slightly better signal although from your comments that isn't happening either.
I would rather not have to use an ethernet at all with the TC and I don't know EOP adapters are!
If you do not use ethernet then you are going to be forced to accept slow speed.

So what your saying is for the fastest internet speed and back up speed possible I should keep my Airport Extreme plugged into my Modem and keep my TC set up as a wireless extender? Then when I want to do back ups I should plug an ethernet cable from my TC to my MacBook Pro?
To spell this out.
A wireless link to an extended device will go very slowly.. if it is not direct.
So lets say you have a laptop sitting in the lounge.. Your connection goes.. Laptop- - - - - AE- - - - -TC.
That means two wireless links.. wireless has this nasty half duplex and single channel nature.. it can send or receive (Tx or Rx) but not at the same time.
Ethernet by contrast does both at once. It is full duplex.
Wireless can talk to one client at a time.. so if there are multiple items using wireless lets say 4 devices.. then your computer gets a 25% time slice. Since wireless cannot handle multiple simultaneous connections.
Ethernet by contrast can connect multiple computers to multiple destinations at the same time.. all transmitting and receiving at full speed.
When you put all this together.. there are a couple of rules for fast connection.
1. Use ethernet at all times. Where you cannot use ethernet use anything but wireless.. eg EOP (homeplug) at least to try and get rid of wireless.
2. Where you must use wireless use it sparingly and make sure it is never more than one hop.. ie never have an extend wireless (repeater is more usual term). Repeater will cause instant slowdown of 50% and maybe up to 75% just because it is so inefficient.
3. Fastest wireless is 5ghz but it has very short range.. you need to be up close and personal to get it working.
Apple routers however unless you do manual setup I suggest are set to connect to best signal strength not best speed. It will therefore use 2.4ghz at 25% less speed than 5ghz because it is 1db better signal.. this madness means you need to setup manually for the best setup.
