Connecting a HD to an AES

I read over the posts and replies to this topic and I still have the problem that was solved for Jack by having a powered hub. Can somebody else add some more info on this issue as I am having the same problem. I do have a powered Dynex USB hub and want to connect my printer and my Western Digital HD to the hub connected to AEBS to use the HD wirelessly with Time Machine. I see the printer in the air port disk tab and the printer works. However when I connect the HD to the hub I see the HD in the Air Port Utility tab Air port Disks but I can't get it to show up in Time Machine or get it to back up unless it is connected directly to the computer. Is this configuration possible? What do I need to do to make this work if it ispossible. I seem to recall something about configuring the HD but I can't remember where I go to partition disks etc. A little help please!!!! and thank you!

Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move your TM backups to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

  • Unable to connect to a Wifi WPA2 AES network

    Hello
    I have an issue to connect to a Wireless WPA2 AES network. I am using an iPhone 4 with iOS 6.0.1
    Is that a  known issue?

  • Can't reliably connect to network with 5 AEs config'd with 'extend network'

    To accommodate a large house, thick walls, and detached guest house I setup five airport Ex's using the 'extend network' option. One is connected to the cable modem and the other four extend. All four get green lights. I get good reception in most places but it appears that I often don't connect to the closest AE, even when only a few feet away. In some cases my signal will go from full to zero in the span of a few feet. The network is the all n/5Ghz mode.
    When checking the logs of each of the AEs I found that I wasn't connecting to the closest unit and in the case of the farthest AE I never connected to it. When I stepped a few feet away from the farthest AE I lost all signal.
    1. There's no relay or remote option when 'extending network'. Is there a way to force connection to a particular AE?
    2. Is there a way to prioritize among the AEs? Like with networks.
    The logs show three AEs connecting to the Main AE and the fifth one connecting to one of the the three relays. Is there a maximum daisy chain length?

    I checked my 4 extremes and found that the 3 mac mini's, 2 powerbook's, 1 imac, and 1 xserve do connect to the closest extreme.
    I have 1 extreme in the middle of the 2nd floor as the gateway. An extreme on the third floor for 2 mac mini's, an extreme on the far end of the second floor for an imac and a powerbook, and extreme on the 1st floor for a mac mini, powerbook, and xserve.
    One item for consideration to help control access is by manipulating the min connect speed dialog box. The default is 1 mb. Up that number until your clients become ineligble to connect to distant routers. As cleints move away from routers, their connection speed reduces.

  • Connecting MiFi 5510L to wireless printer?

    The old MiFi (4510) connected just fine. The new one (5510L) has apparently not got the ability to go into either "WiFi Protected Access" or "AOSS," which are the two standardized access modes for wireless printers (a Brother HL-2270DW). Has anyone had any success in connecting the MiFi 5510L to a wireless printer? The online manual is mute on the subject, and the Verizon phone support was useless.

    MiFis do not come equiped with WPS or whatever AOSS is.  Those are features on normal home routers and have never been offered on a MiFi.
    If you want to connect your Brother wireless pritner to the MiFi then you must enter the connection information manually into the printer.  MiFis use standard WiFi connection technologies like WPA2 and AES to secure wireless connections.  Your printer needs to have a way to enter that information so that it knows how to connect.  Unless you can recall specifically changing your MiFis wireless security the default should be WPA2 (Personal) and AES.  Use the same WiFi password that you use with your PC to connect the MiFi to the printer.
    You need to work with Brother on this one.  They have the expertiese on how to configure and connect your printer to a wireless network.  The printer will see the MiFi like any other home wireless router.  Once you find out how to create a new Wireless Connection on the printer you will be good to go.

  • Mixture of Wifi Questions (Extend network, Wireless Radio, etc)

    Hey Apple Forums!
    So here's the main issue. I've set up a network consisting of two routers. The first is a TC Dual-Band 2 (firmware 7.5.1) and the second is a TC (firmware 7.4.2). The first is connected to the internet and the second is in bridged mode; rather than being used in a WDS, I've set the second to extend the network of the first one, and I've made sure that the first has "Allow this network to be extended" checked. Neither one have any ethernet clients, just wireless. We're using DHCP, a WPA/WPA2 password, and the radio frequencies are automatic (2.4GHz N(B/G compatible), 5 GHz N(A compatible)).
    As for the clients, we have a Wii, Xbox 360 (A/B/G wireless adapter), two macbooks (both 4,1), an iMac ('09-'10)), an iBook ('03-'04), a G4 Cube, and a Powerbook (12' Alum). Right now I'm operating all Network Administration from a Macbook.
    I set up the second router to extend the first because we have the Xbox 360 and Wii in a room with poor signal, and we often traffic in there with the macbooks. Being the tech junkie and certified network technician, I thought back to my schooling and remembered that the more users on the network, the more the signal degrades over distance; this meant that we needed something to cover the room or else nobody would be able to connect in there (and if they could, the speed to do so would mimic dial-up. Yuck!). So I had it extend the first, have the WPA/2 key change every 12 hours (the homes here are spaced out, and if someone wanted free wi-fi they could use our Guest network)
    I'm see two things wrong. The first is a random drop in our connection to the internet. While it may not necessarily be the router dropping it as it could be the network being too busy, we experience a 5-15 second block to connect to the internet perhaps around the hour and at random times. We did not have the problem before I set up the second router to extend our Dual-Band. However, I looked at the logs on the second router and found that the TKIP key was being rotated every few seconds
    Aug 15 10:01:06 Severity:5 Rotated TKIP group key.
    Aug 15 10:01:13 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:21:47:b5:20:d7
    Aug 15 10:01:13 Severity:5 Installed unicast TKIP key for supplicant 00:21:47:b5:20:d7
    Aug 15 10:01:23 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:21:47:b5:20:d7
    Aug 15 10:01:24 Severity:5 Rotated TKIP group key.
    (repeat every 1-4 minutes)
    because our Wii was attempting to connect. I saw that I had set it up to connect with a WPA/WPA2 (AES) key, and promptly switched it to a WPA (TKIP); I cannot confirm the changes yet, but I figured that this may help slightly. I noticed no errors reported on the first router via logs, but did notice
    Aug 15 09:30:03 Severity:5 Connection accepted from [fe80::21e:c2ff:feaf:8c1e%bridge0]:52084.
    being spammed every few seconds or minutes. I figure this is normal and part of the bridge
    Now the second isn't really a problem as I see it to be...wasteful. I know that the Dual-Band 2 uses the 2.4GHz as the guest band and the 5GHz for the secured wireless by default. When you put it into "allow to be extended", I found that both signals were broadcasted in BOTH frequencies. I used iStumbler when trying to determine the optimal placing of the second router, and found a duplicate network for our secured and guest networks. I'm guessing this is supposed to happen to allow routers with other frequencies to extend the signals (like how our second router is 2.4GHz only but can extend the 5GHz secured network), but to me it seems as though the router would be wasting power and time if the signals are being rebroadcasted (1 packet in 2.4GHz, 1 packet in 5GHz; wasting a few milliseconds that build over time) when they could stick to a single frequency. So the question is, can I swap the guest and main network frequencies to stop this redundant broadcasting as well as allow my secured network to be only in 2.4GHz mode?
    Any questions, answers, or mere statements of information is appreciated!

    Ok, so the TKIP key rotation and disassociation may be normal due to the encryption standards for both it and CCMP. However from what little I've found, the original Time Capsule using firmware 7.4.2 may be causing the intermittent drops

    I'll try this tomorrow and see using my Xbox and Macbook (UDP streaming and TCP to be covered)

  • Want to make an isolated subnet

    I am wanting to set up an isolated subnet subordinate to my main subnet, but am seeking guidance before I go out and spend a bunch of money on stuff then find out that it won't work.
    I want to place some (outdoor, in weather-proof enclosures) wireless network webcam servers onto my existing subnet. The wireless network webcam servers are TrendNet TV-IP301W (link opens in new browser window).
    My existing network consists of a combo DSL modem with router and wireless. I rent the modem/router/WAP from my ISP. It does WPA2-AES, and all wireless computers connect to it using WPA2-AES.
    The TrendNet webcam servers do NOT support WPA2-AES. The manufacturer has advised me that they have no plans of upgrading the firmware in that device to do so. At $300+ each, they are not something that I want to just throw away or take a big loss on eBay trying to sell.
    So, I would like to hang an "isolated" WPA1-TKIP subnet (192.168.1.x) off of my existing (192.168.0.x) DSL modem subnet. My initial cut at a network topology design can be seen here (link opens in new browser window).
    One of my main goals for this topology is to continue using the existing routing capabilities of the DSL modem (it can port forward to computers by hostname not IP address and those computers can have DHCP-assigned IP addresses). And, of course, the principal goal is to provide an isolated WPA1-TKIP wireless subnet for the TrendNets, from which rogue users, if they were able to surreptitiously affiliate to that subnet, could neither access any of the Macs affiliated to the 192.168.0.x home subnet nor leech free internet service at my expense.
    I am looking at using two LinkSys WAP-54G routers, one in "client" mode so that its WAN side gets a DHCP-issued IPA from my DSL modem/router. The plan would be to strap it back-to-back with another WAP-54G, which would serve as the router for the TrendNets. Problem is, the first WAP54G apparently only works with another WAP54G, not with my ISP's combo modem/router/WAP.
    However, it is my understanding that one of the versions of dd-wrt firmware may allow allow the first WAP-54G, when configured in client mode, to connect to a non-Linksys router. At least, this website suggests that this is the case.
    The TrendNets are servers, so the only traffic that I want originating from any wirelessly affiliated device on the WPA1-TKIP subnet are "answers" to incoming webserver requests to the TrendNets. Those incoming requests would either be from computers on the 192.168.0.x subnet or from external internet traffic tunneled via ssh to one of the computers ("quicksilver") on the 192.168.0.x subnet. It would be desired to prevent rogue users affiliated to the 192.168.1.x subnet from initiating any connections going external to that 192.168.1.x.
    So (finally!) my questions:
    (1) has anybody ever flashed a WAP54G with this dd-wrt firmware and connected in client mode, using WPA2-AES, to a non-Linksys product?
    (2) there seem to be several versions of the dd-wrt firmware loads out there, and it is not clear to me whatsoever how to select the correct one -- which one should I use?
    (3) any problems seen with my proposed network topology?
    (3) any hints or suggestions on how to quarantine any rogue traffic (i.e., traffic that is not TrendNet port 80 traffic) as described in the previous paragraph?
    Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

    Hi j.v.
    Have you tried the Linksys forums? I think you may get more help from a network type forum that uses the WAP54G than the Apple forums.

  • Too many APs out there!

    Hello All!
    I just moved into an apartment complex. There are 4 more of them in the area. Ran a scan with Netstumbler and WirelessMon, both of them show a lot of APs out there. My wireless network hasn't worked right since I moved here. I put my wrt300n in auto mode. All I get are slow and dropped connections.
    Specs:
    wrt300n
    wpa2 aes+tkip
    firmware 1.03.6

    No. Monitor mode is a special mode into which you can put some wireless cards (or probably most of them but it is not documented nor available through the driver). A normal wireless card will only listen to beacons (the SSID broadcasts) and to traffic labeled with the associated SSID. What the card does not capture is other traffic of other SSIDs. To capture that traffic you have to put the card into "monitor mode". In that mode it simply receives whatever it receives on the channel, i.e., you can see SSIDs even though they don't broadcast and you can read any unencrypted transmissions of anybody on the channel.
    Wireshark does not support this. Wireshark works on a higher level. It only captures what the card passes through. That means it is always traffic on an associated wireless link.
    I don't know the spectrum analyzer but I wonder if it is worth it to spend $199 for it and if you are able to improve your situation or whether it will only show what you already know: there are many APs. As the traffic patterns of those other APs (those other people) are not predictable it may not help much. One day you may have good results on channel 11. The other day your neighbor with the AP on channel 11 does some heavy downloading through the wireless...

  • Incorrect decryption operation in client-server

    Hi all, sorry for my English, I don't know where is the problem and I don't see examples for internet.
    I have a cliente-server aplication, where client read a file, encrypt it and send it to server. The server doesn't decrypt de text correcty. For example if the file contents:
    "Hola, probando el cifrado y descifrado.", the server shows "Hola, probando eifrado."
    I think that the problem is in the form for send and receive the cipher text.
    I put the code for client:
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.security.*;
    import javax.crypto.*;
    class ClientAES {
      public static void main(String argv[]) {

          String cadena = Teclado.readString();
          SecureRandom rand = new SecureRandom(cadena.getBytes());
          System.out.println("Generating key...");
          KeyGenerator keyGen = KeyGenerator.getInstance("AES");
          keyGen.init(rand);

          cipher.init(cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE,desKey);
          CipherOutputStream cos = new CipherOutputStream(s.getOutputStream(), cipher);
          cos.write(b, 0, b.length);
          fis.close();
          cos.close();
          s.close();

          cipher.init(cipher.DECRYPT_MODE,desKey);
          CipherInputStream cis = new CipherInputStream(s.getInputStream(), cipher);
          byte[] in = new byte[cipher.getBlockSize()];
          int length;
          System.out.println(cipher.getBlockSize());
           length = cis.read(in,  0, in.length);
          System.out.println(new String(in)+new String(cipher.doFinal()));
          cis.close();
          s.close();
        } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); }
    }

    eeeh, if I understand your code correctly, then you are creating keys in each process. That means, you'll have two different keys. But you are using AES, which is a symmetric encryption algorithm. Hence you'll need to have the same key on both sides. Otherwise you'll not decrypting the stuff you where encrypting before.

    Help...

    In the SCVMM world a 'template' is composed of the following: a VHD with an OS that has been generalized (sysprep), virtual hardware profile (settings), and an OS profile.
    The OS profile is required to have a product key.  A MAC activation key at the minimum.  But the key is required.
    If you deploy a VM from a VHD, the same customization assumptions are not at play.  Which is why it succeeds.  (there is no template in this case, there is also no requirement that the OS in the VHD be sysprep'd).
    SCVMM has rules.  And lots of things don't make sense until you begin to understand them and play within them. (I am not saying that the SCVMM rules are a good thing, just saying they exist)

  • Tip for WRT350N and WPC300N

    Hi
    I have been struggeling with poor or no network performance on this setup. Here are what i did to get it worki properly:
    - Updated the WRT350NV2 with latest FW (august 2.00.16).
    - Hardreset the WRT350N
    - Set up the WRT again, and this time using AES as dataencryption (and not TKPIP). This was actually a tip from Linksys support!!!
    - Ensured that the XP Wireless Zero config, was stopped, and set to manual startup on the laptop.
    - Uninstalled the previous Linksys drivers, rebooted and installed the latest (1.1.00.019 august).
    - Doing the nw setup again in the Linksys Monitor.
    Bingo. I now have 300Mbps, and it seems to work quite stable so far.
    Drawback: I have devices hat does only support TKPIP. They will not be able to connect to this network then :-(
    Hope this helps someone else.
    br Lars

    Just to clarify some nomenclature:
    WPA    =  PSK   personal  =  WPA with TKIP
    WPA2  =  PSK2 personal  =  WPA with AES
    Try using "PSK2-personal" with "AES or TKIP".  This poorly named option lets some devices connect using WPA, while other devices can connect using WPA2.
    This should allow you WPA2 devices to connect using WPA2  (which uses AES), and it should also allow devices that use WPA to connect using WPA with TKIP.  If this works, then all your devices should be able to connect.
    One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=893357 and it will direct you to the patch.
    Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.

  • Very long applet load time with JRE 1.5 - HELP!!

    My applet is taking forever to load and init using JRE 1.5.
    With JRE 1.4.2_06 it takes a matter of seconds to load and init. The same 1.4.2_06 compiled code running on JRE 1.5 takes ~ 17 minutes!!! Is anyone having a similar experience? I've seen other similar posts related to past plug-in versions, but nothing related to 1.5. The same problem occurs if I compile the code with JDK 1.5 and run with JRE 1.5.
    This extreme example happens on a 533 MHz Win2000 pc with 524 MB RAM.
    A desktop with 3 GHz P4, 1 GB RAM running WinXP SP2 doesn't have an appeciable delay (a couple seconds).
    A laptop with 2.21 GHz AMD Athlon 64, 512 MB RAM running WinXP SP1 takes about 8 seconds to load the applet.
    I don't believe it's running yet in the init method during this long wait time. I don't see any print statements, but the basic layout of it is the following:
         public void init()

    I've discovered where the bulk of the delay is coming from.
    I have 23 default *.properties files in my project. These files contain the English translation of all displayable strings for Internationalization (I18N). The default naming convention is "text.properties".
    For those who don't know I18N, here's a brief synopsis of what happens. ResourceBundles are used to get the strings that are displayed. if your local computer's language/regional settings are English/US, then when the ResourceBundle searches for the file that contains the strings it first looks for a file named text_en_US.properties. If that file is not present or the string is not located, it then looks for a file named text_en.properties. If that file is not present or the string is not located, it then looks for the default file named text.properties. My properties files are all default named.
    I used the Java Console tracing capability to see what was happening and this is what I saw. This is happening for every .properties file:

    None of the files in these traces exist. JRE 1.5 is attempting to set cookies on each of these non-existent files. There is approximately a 5-8 second delay that occurs before each attempt times out. So for each of my 23 properties files this translates to 575-920 total seconds (or 9-15 minutes).
    I tried turning off cookies, but the timeout still occurs.
    Can anyone explain why this is happening and how to fix it?

  • J2SE 5.0 plugin and slow applet load time

    Folks,
    I have an applet (https), with about 5 MB of jar files. After we
    moved to J2SE 5.0, the load time seems much slower. It used to load in
    40 seconds. Now it loads in 4 min.
    An odd thing I noticed is when I minimize my Internet Explorer window,
    the applet seems to start up quickly again.
    Is this possibly related to the "starburst logo" progress bar
    animation that Sun now uses for applet start ups? I know that
    animated gifs can sometimes chew up quite a bit of cpu time.
    I think the progressbar property is no longer in 5.0
    I'm running on a single proc laptop. When I run it on my 2 proc
    server, it is not as obvious, and startup time seems reasonable.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    I'm also seeing a similar slow applet startup time. CPU is 100% (IE is in high 90s). Works ok on my 3GHz P4, but is very slow (up to 16 minutes) on 400 MHz P2.
    My problem seems to be related to how my .properties files (23 total, for internationalization support) are handled.
    During start-up in JRE 1.5 I see the following for each .properties file:
    network: Connecting http://dummy.com/demos/AES/1_4_2_06/fax.class with proxy=DIRECT

    The file (1 of 23) I supply is named fax.properties (the default file). Since my locale setting are English/US I guess the I18N code is trying to figure out if the regional files are present. Each of these requests is timing out 5-8 seconds for each - it builds up quickly.
    I haven't been able to find out why this is happening or resolve the issue. I'm close to restricting my applet to only 1.4.2 as that was fine and posting this as a bug.

  • Upto 3 speakers when using Multispeakers?

    In the information regarding iTunes 6.03 it states that you are able to listen to your music around the house on upto three speakers + computer.
    Now I'm on 6.02 at the moment and I have the computer + four airport expresses dotted around the house and they all work at the same time just fine.
    So, a couple of questions-
    Is there some kind of limiter built in to 6.03?
    Am I damaging anything when I exceed the stated limit?
    regards
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
    You sound like you have been able to master the iTunes better than me, I can't see how to broadcast my tunes to each of my (2) Airport Express modules. The selector only lets me choose computer or each individual AE? To get around it I use an application called Airfoil which does indeed let you select all or some of the speakers connected to each of your AEs. The Airfoil does not give any indication that more than 2,3,4 or whatever number of AEs will affect your ability to broadcast to all or just some of them at the same time.
    Probably not the whole answer but hope it helps and if you could tell me how you get iTunes to send to all your speakers at the same time that would be great.
    Cheers

  • WRT160N and WET54G

    Hi All,
    I bought a new WRT160N router, and tried to connect my WET54G. But every time I try to connect it in "infrastructure" mode It jams. And can only work again after using the reset button.
    I'm connecting with WPA2 personal (TKIP/AES).
    Can anyone help me with this problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi Matt,
    Thanks for your help.
    When I'm in the setup screen of the WET54G I can choose to connect to a wireless network, and when I connect to my home router (WRT160N) It will use its SSID and channel number. In the next screen "security settings", I can fill in the encrition. After filling those in, I says that he will restart (WET54G). And after that message the WET54G is stuck. All the greens leds are on, but I can't connect to the IP addres.

  • Client MFP support on linksys CCXv5 adapters

    Hello!
    According to CCX compatible matrix, CCXv5 adapter supports Client MFP.

    I have two Linksys wireless adapters AE1000 and AE6000 with the latest software versions.
    When I connect these adapters to WPA2 AES(CCMP)protected WLAN, in client details on the WLC I can see that client is CCXv5 but
    no Management Frame Protection supported (MFP-WLC-01.jpg attachment).
    Prime shows the same information about the client (MFP-Prime-01.jpg).
    What can be the reason for this situation?
    Is there any way to make these adapters support MFP?

    Hello!
    Yes, that's right. MFP is enabled
    WLAN Client MFP protection is set to Optional
    WLAN security is WPA2, PSK, AES(CCMP)
    GLobal MFP state is Enbaled
