Connecting a MacBook to a PowerBook, just isn't working

Hello
Here's what I have:
a new shiny MacBook, OS 10.5.5
an old PowerBook G4 OS 10.3.9
From reading other posts, I've tried to connect the two using an ethernet cable to allow me to transfer stuff from the old to the new, but just no luck.
On the MacBook, in Sharing, I turned on File Sharing and gave everyone Read Write privileges
I turned on Remote Login and allowed access for All users
I turned on Remote Apple Events for all users
Under Network in the system prefs the ethernet is configured using DHCP.
But it says the cable is unplugged - when it isn't.
Clicking on advanced:
TCP/IP is configured using DHCP
Apple Talk is active
Ethernet is configured automatically and there's an ID number.
On the PowerBook:
Personal File Sharing is on
Remote login is on
Remote Apple events are on
Firewall is OFF
Under Network:
Built-in Ethernet shows TCP/IP is configured using DHCP
Apple Talk is active
Ethernet is configured automatically
If I try to connect to server and browse there's nothing coming up under the network.
If i try to type in the computer name or IP ID, nothing. It fails to connect.
I'm stumped.
Can't use migration assistant as the old 'puter doesn't have it. Can't use firewire as the new 'puter doesn't have it! It's all a bit pear shaped.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks!
Happy new year.
nicole

Thanks. I've tried that and my old computer isn't being found. I've:
connected both old and new computer to my wireless network
opened Migration Assistant on my new machine
Chosen Transfer from another Mac
And the next screen says "On your other mac, do the following: open Migration Assistant"
Which I can't do because Migration Assistant isn't on the old computer. It's looking for other computers but isn't finding anything.
I'm really stuck by this (which is embarrassing as I'm the techie geek in the family and my sister wants to play with her new 'puter!)
Thanks
Nicole

I've searched to no avail for this problem. Similar posts but none that tell me what to do. I can't add or delete any bookmarks on my iPad 2 running the newest iOS. I know how it's suppose to work, it just isn't working!
It started after the major update to iOS 7.
I can't believe that this is so hard to do. It's just not letting me. I can add a bookmark to the home screen just fine, just not in a bookmarks folder anywhere I try.
I've used Apple products since 2001 and have always loved how intuitive they are. But the Safari browser since iOS 7 has been the worst I've experienced. At least right in the beginning after that update.
I'd really appreciate any help that doesn't just tell me how it's suppose to work...I know that.
My iPad 4 is not affected with the problem and works as it should.

Have you set System Preferences/CDs & DVDs to what you want to happen? This helped one person.
Here is an Apple support article, but the information is pretty basic:

  • Boot Camp just isn't working.

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro i7 running Mountain Lion. Love it.
I recently decided to upgrade to a SSD, so my regular drive with boot camp installed is no longer in my machine. In my optical drive bay I have placed a secondary hard drive and removed my SuperDrive.
Before I installed my SSD, boot camp was working just fine. I was able to boot into Windows and play all my games on Steam without any issues.
I thought, "Now that I have an SSD, I can install Boot Camp onto my secondary internal drive and leave my primary drive free!" My secondary drive is ideal for this with all the additional space."
After I installed my SSD, I cannot get Boot Camp to install. AT ALL. Here's all I've tried:
Boot Camp Assistant - Created a USB Bootable thumb drive to boot from my legitimate copy of Windows 7. Had to do some tweaking (like this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z1gqw0ougo).
When Boot Camp Assistant rebooted my machine to install Windows from the thumb drive, I got this error - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgWBY6IezQA - He recommended creating bootable thumb drives on different thumb drives if you get that error.
I tried SIX different thumb drives. All different brands all across the board. Even a Generic USB thumb drive didn't work.
I tried using the Windows 7 DVD to USB installer from Microsoft on one of my older machines onto these thumb drives. Didn't work.
I even tried 3rd party bootable thumb drive creators. Didn't work.
After that I used a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to try and boot from the CD. The disc will show up on Mac's boot menu just fine (unlike the Windows 7 thumb drive), but after I attempt to run the Windows installer it'll just sit there and have a blank screen with a cursor.
I tried making USB external hard drives bootable for Windows install. Nothing.
I then thought, "Maybe it's because I'm trying to install this thing on a secondary internal drive and Apple doesn't like that for some reason." So I cleared up some space on my primary drive and attempted the install. Didn't work.
I Googled around as much as I could; I found some tricks and hacks that could move over a VMware Fusion install into a boot camp partition. Didn't work.
I did a "Disk Utility Restore" of from my previous installation of boot camp to my newly created Boot Camp partition. It "almost" worked. It shows up on my Mac's boot menu but when I try to boot into it, it just shows a blank screen with a blinking cursor.
I remembered that my previous install of Boot Camp would hang at that blank cursor screen for a few minutes. So I decided to let it have a lot of time and went to bed. The next day, several hours later, it was still on the blank cursor screen.
I searched around and apparently Windows 7 can have some screwed up boot files. I came across this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR67i5iovoI - which makes sense, but I can't even get Windows 7 boot camp to load in my VMware fusion to fix it! It'll also show a blank screen with a cursor!
So there you have it. I would really prefer to have a working native Windows 7 install because I do quite a bit of gaming and... well, gaming isn't very prominent on the Mac just yet, although it is getting better.
I'm going to attempt to do another Disk Utility Restore (they take about two hours...). I'm pretty sure it won't work.
Anyone out there have any suggestions? I've spent way too much time on this, haha.

After trying all of the above and finding a random thread out there, I went ahead and put my SuperDrive back in and placed my secondary drive as the primary and was able to install Windows 7 without a hitch.
So I guess that "solved" my problem. I popped my secondary drive (with Bootcamp) back into place and put my SSD as the primary again, and I was able to boot into Windows.
Stinks that I had to do ALL OF THAT and trick my MB Pro like that.
    But hey, it's working. Hooray.

  • How to connect my macbook on tv (can't make it work)?

    Hi,
I know this topic is not something new but I really could't find an effective answer. If it's been discussed already, please help me finding it.
I have a macbook white bough in Oct, '09. Everything worked real fine until I had the idea of watching my digital movies on TV instead of 13" display. First I searched for cable compatibility in the manual, then I went to an authorized mac revendor and bought a cable.
It is a mini display port to RCA or S-Video.
The point is that it doens't work because when I connect the cable, the TV's screen stays blank. I tried on sony, samsung and panasonic TVs. Also, tried the RCA RCA cable, S-Video RCA and S-Video S-Video.
And I tried "detect monitor" function and rebooting.
I haven't used my laptop connected on any external display, so I can't tell if it is a problem in the macbook or the video out cable (adapter). I can't tell either if it happened before or after any OS update.
    Ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pedro.

Unfortunately, I have no idea why that cable won't work . One of the reviews I read suggests that the newer Macs do not have support for analog signals, which includes VGA, S-video & composite.
What you can do is this.
Purchase the mini-DVI to VGA cable:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY#overview
    and a box like this:
Lake PC to TV Converter box
Not the most elegant solution, but it would work if your only inputs are RCA. If the TV has other inputs, such as HDMI, you can get the mini-DVI to DVI adapter and then purchase cables to connect to the TV, which would be more cost efficient. Let me know if that's the route you want to take!
    Good luck.

  • How do i connect my macbook pro to tv and get it working?

I want to watch content (DVD's, movies, etc) that I play on my Macbook pro on my Sony Digital TV.
My local I-Centre (Apple Premium Reseller) sold me a Dr. Bott connector: Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter, Audio/Video Version
I also bought a regular HDMI cable to plug one end in this Dr.Bott connector and the other in my TV.
=> I can see my Macbook backgound now on my TV, but none of the applications appears. When starting a DVD on my Macbook my TV only shows the background image of my Macbook.
Anyone that can help me out?

This is called "extended desktop mode".  You can drag any window off the right side of the screen and it will appear on the TV.
To Mirror the main monitor you can press CMD F1 to toggle between mirror mode and extended desktop.

Or buy an external SD card reader.

Put the phone in rescue mode and have itunes restore it. This is how. Turn the device off holding down the sleep/wake button until you get slide to turn off. Turn off device. With the device off. Hold down the home button and keep holding down the home button while plugging in the iphone to your computer. Iphone will get an itunes logo and cable image on the screen release the home button. Itunes will see a device in recovery mode press ok in the message and hit restore.

  • I am struggling to connect my macbook pro to a wireless network. Works fine with USB and my Toshiba can print wirelessly but not the MAC. Any ideas?

    Hi
I cant print wirelessly on my Mac pro but can via usb. the Toshiba does work wirelessly..any ideas?

If you can use the wireless network properly (surf the web, check email, etc.) then there is probably nothing wrong with your network settings.
When you print from your Mac Pro, does the printer show up in the Printer list at all (in the Print dialog box)?
If not, have you already tried to Add Printer from the bottom of the Printer list?
If you click Add Printer and it can't see the printer, the next thing to do is probably go to the Toshiba printer web site and see if there is a Mac printer driver to download and install so that it shows up in the Printer list.

  • IPhone 4s bluetooth not connecting to macbook pro

My iPhone 4s bluetooth is not connecting to macbook pro.  My 3Gs has always worked perfectly fine.  Is there a problem with the 4s hardware or iOS 5?  Anyone have any ideas?

I'm trying to connect using Bluetooth to use my iPhone as a remote for keynote while on the go (no network to connect to.) maybe it can't be done with the new iPhones but it seems like we should be able to. Thanks for the snarky and super helpful answer though.

  • After updating to the latest iphone 4 software, my triple click to voice over no longer works. I have double and triple checked all settings and it just doesn't work anymore. Advice?

After updating my iphone 4 last, my triple click to voice over stopped working. I have checked all settings and it just isn't working anymore. Is this an issue with the latest update? Any way to fix this?

    Try resetting your phone:
Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release.
Then, recheck your Settings: Settings>General>Accessibility>Triple-click Home...

  • Mini DisplayPort to VGA isn't working. It won't recognize any external monitor. It worked just fine with my older spring 2011 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, but now with my brand new 2012 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, it no longer works

I just bought a new MacBook Pro this summer and was all excited. But I'm very frustrated right now because I can't connect to any external monitors through VGA. My thunderbolt (DisplayPort Mini) to HDMI works just fine, but when I try with my other connector to go from Thunderbolt (DisplayPort Mini) to VGA, Nothing works. my screen goes blue and changes size like it recognized something but nothing is ever detected on the external moniter or projector. I'm not sure what is wrong but it's very frustrating. I'm just very depressed that it worked just fine with my 2-year-old MacBook Pro but isn't working now. I'm running OS X 10.8.2. I just upgraded yesterday from 10.8.1 but that upgrade did nothing to fix my problem. Can anyone help? Thanks

I am haveing this exact same issue. I have plugging in 3 monitors and tried two different VGA to mini displayport and nothing is working. I recently bought a Acer monitor and it work for an hour and now it back to doing the same thing.
When I plug the VGA adapter in to the monitor the monitor think its not connected to a computer then when disconnecting the VGA adapter the monitor thinks it is connected to a computer.
NEED SOME HELP!!! at the point of all my hair is pulled out.
    ^^^
that is the same problem i am having! if anyone can help that would be great i'm losing my mind over here

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

Assuming your MBP is a recent model, i.e. bought in the last couple of years, and that your TV has HDMI inputs (if you've bought it new then that's a safe assumption) then you need a mini-displayport to HDMI cable.  The Apple Store sell one:

jpmarkques post is a good start point, after folling his directions, you can try detect displays. Also try different rsolution and refresh rates.
Most of the projectors I have used support a 1024X768 res.
Youcan also try a pram reset if it still does not detect.
Leave theproctor connected and powered up, power down the MBP.
Power back up the MBP and hold the following keys before you hear the start up chime:
Option, command, P,R (no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times.
