Connecting a macbook to a projector

Is there a way to connect a macbook pro to an Optoma Pro160S projector...or failing that, is there a special cable that is required?

The answers are probably "yes" and "maybe" respectively.
That projector has a variety of input ports ("HDMI, VGA, S-Video, Composite Video" according to the specs online).
You don't say what model and year MacBook Pro you have, so we don't know what connectors it has or what sort of cable might be required. For example, my 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina display would need only a standard HDMI-to-HDMI cable, but a different model might need a converter cable or device.

  • What adapter to connect my Macbook Pro to projectors?

    Hi All,
For the last year I've been using my old WIndows laptop when doing presentations out at client sites purely because it's what I was used to, and in almost every single case, the client will provide a VGA cable to plug into my laptop (which connects to the projector they provide) so it was SAFE and RELIABLE every time.
However it's gotten to the point where I'm way more comfortable with my Macbook Pro and want to know exactly what cable I shoudl take to client sites to ENSURE that I will always be able to connect to their projector.  I'm wondering if it would be some sort of HDMI to VGA cable?  I've noticed some mini displayport to vga cables online but I don't think my macbook has that port.  Do I need it to be HDMI to 'female' VGA or male? I want to ensure I have all bases covered, because there's nothing more stressful or daunting than going to do a large presentation and being unable to connect!
Any help would be appreciated. and any other tips/advice is welcome for using a macbook for presentations with projectors etc!
I'm using MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 w/ OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3
    Cheers,
    Manachi

Your Thunderbolt ports 'double' as Mini DisplayPorts so if the projector uses VGA for an input, you could use this adapter, for example, to output from your MacBook Pro to VGA.
Monoprice has just about any adapter that you could need.
    Good luck,

  • Connecting a MacBook to an external display or projector

I have tried to connect my MacBook to a projector and to a TV using the mini-DVI to Video adapter, both with the same poor results. Here's the steps I took:
    - Turned on the TV
    - Connected the video cable to the TV "video in"
    - Connected the video cable to the MacBook with the mini-DVI to vieo adapter
    - Opened the MacBook
    - Turned it on
The MacBook boots up, the MacBook resolution changes and the video on the TV is distorted, showing essentially three images of the MacBook display. Any attempt to adjust the resolution using system preferences just makes it worse.
Has anyone had success using a MacBook for presentations using either a TV or a projector and, if so, what procedure do you use to connect?

    Greetings from Hong Kong-
I have a major presentation to give in a couple of days and have NOT been successful connecting to an external display. I am starting to freak out. Any instructions would be helpful!

  • How do I connect my MacBook Air 2011 to a projector?

How do I connect my MacBook Air 2011 to a projector?

It depends on the input connection for the projector, but since many are rduced resolution, VGA seems to be the prevalent common connection.
It's just a matter of buying the adapter that adapts VGA to the Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt port on your Air. If it is a DVI or HDMI connection input on your projector, the online Apple Store carries that as well.
This adapter and sufficient length VGA cable is all you need for VGA.
    Here's the DVI adapter.
For some reason, I am unable to bring up the Moshi HDMI adapter on Apple's site.

jpmarkques post is a good start point, after folling his directions, you can try detect displays. Also try different rsolution and refresh rates.
Most of the projectors I have used support a 1024X768 res.
Youcan also try a pram reset if it still does not detect.
Leave theproctor connected and powered up, power down the MBP.
Power back up the MBP and hold the following keys before you hear the start up chime:
Option, command, P,R (no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times.

  • How to connect a macbook to an external projector?

I would like to connect my macbook to my school's projector for presentation and it seems the projector cable at school doesn't fit into any slot in my macbook.
What kind of cable do I need? I remember the cable at school is able to plug into any PC, and the slot looks like a trapezium with a lot of little holes. Is that the VGA?
I am using a white macbook, 2.4, bought in september 2008.
    thank you very much

It took a while for me to figure that out too when I switched to a mac xP
    Here's what you need:
    1) MiniDVI-VGA Cable : which can be found at the apple store (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A?mco=MTIxODk3Mw)
It plugs into the port to the left of the FireWire port and allows you to use a PC (VGA) video cable with your macbook.
    2) The VGA (trapezium) cable if you don't already have one dangling off your projector
    3) You'll have to adjust some settings in System Preferences > Displays to get the projector to display your screen correctly.
    happy presenting :]

  • HT1338 cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector  -does not detect and 2nd monitor. I have a new Mini port to VGA cable made by apple. When I read online I see that many people have the same problem - Is this an Apple defect??????????????????

I cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector - It will not detect a 2nd monitor or display. I am using an Apple made Mini Display port to VGA adapter. As I read online I see that many other peple are having the same problem. Is this an Apple defect!!???? If so it just burst the bubble about how great macs are. I never had a problem with that on a PC. I hope I am wrong. What can you tell me?

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Problems connecting my  MacBook Pro to a video projector

I have a MacBook Pro. I have used it many times to connect to a video projector and give presentations in my classroom. Lately, it is hit or miss concerning whether the laptop will give a signal to the computer. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I have followed the instructions in the MacBook guide.(Start with projector and laptop off, connect, turn on, etc. )
I am using the DVI to VGA adapter. I have also tried to use the function keys and manually tried to get it to detect displays. Can't think of what to do next. I gave up and hooked up a Windows computer and it worked.
Could it be the adapter? Does anyone have any ideas I can try? Thanks!

I have problems too with some projectors and the DVI--VGA adapter that came with my MBP. The projector is recognized by the computer, but does not show any signal.
With the help of Stéphane Madrau, who has written the excellent tool SwitchResX, I found out that the projector reports that it takes digital input when I connect the MacBook Pro, but analog when I connect it to my 12" PBG4. From the DDC information (collected with SwitchResX):
    MacBook Pro, DVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Digital
    PBG4, miniDVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Analog input with: 0.700V / 0.300V
    Separate Sync
    Composite Sync
Given that the VGA cable is analog only, I would think that the MBP tries (or rather, does) output digital signals only, which don't make it into the VGA cable. If I find a solution I will post it here.
The clue was that the computer did not report any vertical scan frequencies for the external display, while it did so for a projector that worked.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

    TD

Whenever I connect my Macbook Pro to my InFocus Projector, the projector never finds the Mac and the Mac locks up. Connecting through VGA. Any ideas?

Did you try a cable? The point is you did not provide any information about: what projector, how you are trying to connect, what happens when you try, error messages if any, does an external monitor work, what computer you have, what OS, etc.
