Connecting a microphone to Garageband

I have a good stereo Rhode microphone for my Nikon DSLR which I would like to use on my MacAir so I can input voice and sound effects into GarageBand.
I'm sure it is possible via some sort of mini mic jack to USB connector but feel that there may be compatibility problems.
Anyone have any good thoughts to share ?
(Questioned also posted on the MacAir forum)

A mini mic jack to USB connector does not work. The Mic signal is an analog audio signal and USB is a digital data signal. You need a proper interface, a so called audio interface, that converts the analog audio signal into a digital signal that OSX will "understand".
Make sure the audio interface has the proper jack to connect the mic to and works with OSX (Core Audio) so you don't need to install any additional driver.
In GarageBand, you then just select that audio interface as the audio source and you can record from your mic onto an Audio Track.
Hope that helps

How do you connect a microphone to the Mac?  I'm trying to record vocals onto Garage Band.  I tried to use an adapter (XLR to MONO 3.5 mm) to connect directly to the port on the side of the MacBook Pro.

I prefer USB mics - a really cool and nice one that I used to have was the Blue Snowball, available at Amazon for a great price. It got lost in a move but I intend on getting another.

Could you please help me in connecting my microphone to Apple computer so that I can effectively use Logic Express to record my voice for podcasting

For best result, I think you should have an audio interface like the M-audio fast track where you connect your mic with. What kind of mic do you have?

  • How to connect Wireless microphone to Cisco Telepresence SX20

    Hi,
Does anyone try to connect Wireless microphone to the second microphone input (Cisco Table Mic 20 microphone is connected to the first microphone input)? Is this connection OK if I want to use both 2 micphone types?

I have connected single- and dual-channel Revolabs microphones the C20, with very good success.  I have also connected a single-channel Revolabs and a second connection to ClearOne Converge Pro DSP, also with very good success.  I have not tried to connect a TelePresence 20 Microphone on one input and a single-channel Revolabs on the other.  My customers either require a totally wireless solution or a wireless and an installed microphone solution.  We are just starting to order the SX20, so I will be testing wired and wireless combinations to validate their compatibility.
The Revolabs receiver has a 3.5mm TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve), while the C20/SX20 has a 3.5mm TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve).  Revolabs makes a cable that resolves the differences between them but it does not transmit the muting function on the Revolabs microphone to the codec.  Muting takes place by using the remote or the Cisco touch panel.

  • I want to use my grey Mac G4 desktop to Skype. How and where do I connect a microphone

I want to use my grey Mac G4 desktop to Skype. How and where do I connect a microphone. Is it possible?

G4 Macs have no built video/webcams or microphones.
The best solutions are USB devices.
First, you need to determine the version of Skype that you can use. The newest Skype version 5 can only run on Macs with a min. OS X version of OS 10.5.8 Leopard.
Tthe older version of Skype that can run in your Mac is Skype 2.8 found here.
    http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/macosx/2-8/
There are not a lot of webcams or microphones that work with both Macs and Skype.
Here is the only webcam, from Logitech, that I was using on my previous G4 that was both PC and Mac compatible, but the requirements say you need 1.0 Ghz CPU and OS X 10.5.8 Leopard.
    http://www.logitech.com/en-us/webcam-communications/webcams/hd-webcam-c615
Logitech also has a few Mac compatible USB headset audio/microphones, but don't mention Skype compatibilty.
You would need to buy and try to test.
Plantronics makes only one or two models that will work with Macs and general Internet Telephony and include Skype, also.
    Here is one here.

Command I will open the master window on the right. Make sure under "I"nfo lower right corner next to monitor, make sure it is not turned off. If you are playing an elctric guitar, don't bother with the no feedback setting.
Make sure the volume in system prefs is up and not muted. (system prefs.sound.output)

  • Connecting 2 Microphones simultaniously on X-Fi Elite

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone has tried this before and is able to help me.
I would like to connect 2 mics AND have seperate input streams which can be edited and manipulated seperately (so no mixer).
Is this possible? Can I just connect another mic in line-2 of the I/O panel?

You can connect 2 microphones. e.g. one on Line-in 2 and one on Mic. You can listen to them simultaneously and manipulate them via audiocreation mode. (for example you can insert different effects on the different channels).
But you cannot do this: Recording both. For recording you can only chose one channel or the "what you can hear" channel. This means, you either record one channel, or "all". Of course you can mute every other output (wave, midi, line-in 3 etc.) and leave only those two 'channels' unmuted where you plugged the microphones in and then chose "what you can hear" as recording source.
In any way, you cannot record 2 or more channels simultaneously (for example record each microphone on a different track in cubase at the same time).
I hope this helps answering your question.

  • Macboock pro 8.1 (13 inc.)  - connect a microphone (audio in)

Any one can help me? I need to understand if it's possible buy an external port for connect a microphone.
In the 13 inches model there isn't this port but only the audio out.
I need to connect something like a jack.
    Can you suggest me something?
    Thanks in advance

The port on the MBP doubles as both output and input, but it requires a line-level input signal, so you'll need a preamplifier or an amplified mic to get acceptable recorded results. An alternative is to use a mic that connects to a USB port instead.

  • Using USB Microphone With GarageBand iPad?

Hi, I have the Samson G-Track USB Microphone and have been using it with GarageBand for iPad (with a powered USB hub) and I was wondering if there is a way to enable "Monitor" so that when I speak into the microphone I can hear myself in the headphones? I have no problem recording with the microphone, I just can't hear myself when I'm recording. There are a few switches on the actual microphone that could control this or it could all be controlled from iPad itself, just looking for anyone who could help with this matter. Thanks!

I'm having the same problem trying to monitor my turntable recording via a USB phono amp connected via a USB hub to the photo connection kit.
Have you had any help with this yet?

  • How can i connect a microphon on my mac mini?

I would like to be connected with Skype, but i can configure my microphone. Do some of you know how can i do that connetion?

The "mic" input on the mini is actually a general purpose line level input.  It will require a battery powered mic to work properly.  You can also use a usb mic.  Adjustments are made from System Preferences > Sound > Input.

  • How can I connect external microphone to MacBook Pro?

    Hello!
I need to connect the external microphone to my MacBook Pro? How can I do it?

Some mikes have sufficient output to connect to this port, Alexey, but most don't. the solution, if you really want to use this particular mic, is to obtain a small battery or mains powered pre-amplifier to connect between the microphone and the line -in input. Alternatively there are devices which will allow you to connect your existing mic through the USB port. If you have an amplifier with a mic input already you could also use this as an intermediary, though it won't be very portable, of course!
You may find it cheaper to simply buy either a USB or "line level" mic, though.

  • I want to connect two microphones trough an AudioLink III hardware in Adobe Connect

    Hi everybody,
I´m trying to connect an AudioLink III hardware in a Mac OS to use two microphones in the same meeting in Adobe Connect. But, I don´t know why, just it´s working one channel, not both. In another hand, using another sound hardware it works, but it didm´t work with the AudioLink III sound hardware.  Any idea?
I have to say that in system preferences in the Mountain Lion Mac OS, the two channels from the AudioLink III is working property. The problem comes in my Adobe Connect meeting.
I hope anybody can help us.
Sorry for my grammar. Greetings from Spain.

    Hi Sameer,
Yeah, I select the correct Audio input device, in this case, USB Audio. The program recognize the hardware, but just one of the two channels, that´s the problem. I tried under Windows SO too, but with the same results. I suppose that´s a problem with this hardware.
Thanks for your answer and your time.

    Dear Jutapa.
While i am occupied with electronics for more from thirty years, my experience in the web pages has age of fifteen days. Thus your comments about the appearance of my site are precious and be compelled to you. Thanks, but i do not understand what means ?IMO?. Also, what means that my site is very hard? Please inform me to correct it. Now the answers in your questions:
) Perhaps you decei'ved from the size of transformer because it is only 50VA (or 50W / 30V = ,66A) and his cost in Greece does not exceed the 8?. Keep in mind always that, the toroidal transformers cost at 70 percent least from the E-shaped transformers. But in any case the total cost of the unit does not exceed the 45?. Surely this cost approaches the cost of the available mini mixing desks in the market. But the sound quality of the unit is comparable only with the high quality professional mixing desks, because the structure of circuit is precisely same with a channel such desk, a thing that appears and only from the supply of +/-8Volts. The phantom power of 8Volts maximum is enough for all modern condenser microphones. There are in the market such type units from famous brands as dbx, bss, apex, rane, symetrix, dda etc. and their price exceeds the 300? as these units are addressed for use in studios.
    2) The oscilloscope graphs quoted in the article, believe me it is the better method of estimate the unit ? especially the square wave response ? because they express her transient character as this is most important for a designer of electronic circuits while the usual graphs of THD+Noise are offered more for consumers. If study my article, you see somewhere my explanation about this. Anyway, the T. I.M. factor of a closed loop circuit (Transient Intermodulation Distortion) expresses the possibility of it to manage the harder signals ? this is the response ?speed? to fast transients ? without oscillations. In the software of my oscilloscope included and a FFT analyzer to give the THD but i do not use it because by default today yet the chipper units in the market has very low THD due to the evolved modern electronic parts. The same is also in effect for the noise produced by the circuit himself. As it is known, the fundamental Johnson noise or thermal noise from metal film resistors is too little and the NE5532 ? NE5534 produce noise of certain nanovolts.
    3) About the EIN (Ein) - or the sensitivity of input so that us understand also the other ? reported in the schematic diagram in dBV. Why not in dBm? Because from habit i do not want to take into account the input impedance ? as get used almost all the designers of electronic circuits ? and in this way the logarithmic expression of the minimum gain of input it is given by the use of dBV (reference ratio to Vrms). Let to calculate the input sensitivity in dBm as you prefer: The input impedance of the balanced input is: Zin = R2+R3 = 20 K? approximately. The total gain of input presented at the output of the subtructer U2A and is: V = V3-V2. The minimum gain of the first stage composed by the two non inverting UA and UB with VR5 turned full CCW is: Av = +[2X(R4+R3)/VR5+R5] = +[2X000/47220] = +0,466 = ,466. In dBm the reference is 0,775Vrms thus Av = ,466X0,775 = ,36Vrms. And because the output of U2A is twice his inputs then: V = 2X,36 = 2,272 Vrms and the sensitivity in dBm is: Ein = 20 X log(2,272 / 0,775) = 9,34 dBm. And if we take the maximum gain of the first stage - by turning VR5 full CW - of 0 with the same equations in dBm, results: 46 dBm
    Best regards

  • Microphones into GarageBand

I have GarageBand v1, a mirror-door G4 DP (no audio input), a USB1 iMic, two old mikes, a cassette deck, and an acoustic guitar. I want to record my playing and singing.
I have done this by plugging the mikes into the tape deck, recording the song on tape, then playing the tape deck through the iMic into the G4 and onto a GarageBand track.
I would like to be able to record directly onto GarageBand. Can I do this with the old G4? If not, could I do it if I bought a new computer with audio-in? What would convert the analog from the mikes into digital?

No, a new computer with Line-In wouldn't really help:
    http://www.thehangtime.com/gb/gbfaq2.html#micline
There are other less expensive solutions, but the types of mics you're using wont' work very well.
I can think of several solutions that should work, depending upon your budget. The simplest, and cheapest would probably be the Logitech USB Desktop Microphone for about $20.
For better quality I'd think a Studio Condenser Mic with USB Output for about $79, or a Snowball, USB Microphone for about $124 would work well.
Finally, for good quality, and more flexibility, I think a combination of the Griffin Technology 9066-IMIC2 iMic/USB Audio Interface for about $30, an MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount for about $60, and a Behringer UB502 Eurorack UB502 Mixer for about $30 would work great.
