Connecting a modem, problem solving PPPOA

Hi everyone,
I've purchased the Airport Extreme (dual) and I've also got a new Broadband Package on the way due to my last ISP being a failure!
The ISP is PPPOA, as was my last one, and as far as I can see the Airport Extreme has no support for this. Only PPPOE.
I also have a Netgear DG834G, which I was planning to use as a modem, but since the airport can't support PPPOA, that's out of the window, right?
1. Will using the Airport as a bridge and connecting to it cause any problems (speed decreases etc) with the internet?
2. Is is best if I purchase a Vigor 120 which will provide a PPPOA to PPPOE bridge, therefore solving the problem? Or is this not needed and will provide no advantage?
Any ideas welcome, got a few days to get it solved!
Thanks,
Ste.

The ISP is PPPOA, as was my last one, and as far as I can see the Airport Extreme has no support for this. Only PPPOE.
That is correct. The AirPorts do not support PPPoA to provide user credentials to the ISP. You would require another device: modem, another router, or your computer that support PPPoA to provide these.
I also have a Netgear DG834G, which I was planning to use as a modem, but since the airport can't support PPPOA, that's out of the window, right?
Not necessarily. You could connect the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) directly to one of the Netgear's LAN ports with the AEBS configured as a bridge. This would allow the Netgear to provide both NAT & DHCP services for the entire network.
1. Will using the Airport as a bridge and connecting to it cause any problems (speed decreases etc) with the internet?
No, as a bridge, the AEBS would become a "passive" device.

  • Lucent modem problem[solved]

    Hi everyone!
My girlfriend ask me to setup his computer with a linux.
    I choose arch
She has a lucent winmodem and I would like to know how to setup his connection.
After some search I install ltmodem with pacman.
    Pacman did it without error.
    I add this in /etc/modprobe.conf:
    alias char-major-62 ltserial
    alias /dev/modem ltserial
I also have this file for udev:
    bash-3.1$ cat ltmodem.rules
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="ttyLTM[0-9]", MODE=="0660", GROUP=="tty", RUN+="/lib/udev/load-modules.sh ppp-generic", SYMLINK+="modem"
    And:
    bash-3.1$ locate ltmodem.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.16-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/ltmodem.ko
    bash-3.1$ locate ltserial.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.16-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/ltserial.ko
    Problem:
The ltserial and ltmodem module did not load and I did not have a /dev/modem or a /dev/ttyLT0
Currently I using my cable connection (eth0...) and the rc.conf is set top use dhcp.
How must I modify the rc.conf to use the lucent modem?
I try to add ppp_generic, ltmodem and ltserial to module section but I have a error when I boot for ltmodem and ltserial (does'nt exist ?).
    I never set a 56k connection
    Please help

  • Cannot connect to server problem - Solved

I was having the same problem with Safari not connected to server, or server not found. IE wouldn't work either. Researching another problem (unable to connect with software update), I stumbled onto a possible solution. At least it worked for me. Going into System Pref, Network, Proxies, I unchecked everything under "Select a proxy server to configure". That solved my problem and now can access Safari and IE.

  • Wireless connection 'local' only - problem solved

I had problems making a wireless connection to my new BT Homehub3. Ethernet connection fine. Wireless stopped at 'local' connection and no internet access. I read many forums, spent over an hour with BT's helpline in India (extremely competent) but to no avail. The BT guy took over my laptop and tried everything imaginable but no success. The consensus on the forums was that there appears to be a compatability issue between Windows Vista and some hubs (not specifically BT).
I found the solution in an obscure Windows Update - an optional one from 2010 that I hadn't noticed. This had the name of my wireless card (Atheros) in the title which I wouldn't have recognised until this BT Hub problem arose. Downloaded the specific wireless card update and I'm now using the wireless connection to send this post.
Might be worth checking for your own wireless cards just in case. Hopefully BT engineers might find this info useful.

The original poster has not returned to the forum since December, however if you connect your computer using an Ethernet cable, then go to the Windows update page and ask it to look for updates, there should be an "optional updates" section, remember to download all the critical ones first.
Look at "hardware updates" and see if it shows the update for your wireless card.

  • WiFi connection problem solved

My intel iMac and MBA had no problem but iPods 3g and 5g did.  I had an old Netgear router connected and sitting next to my Airport Express.  On a hunch I diconnected the Netgear and created a guest network to replace the one on the Netgear.  PROBLEM SOLVED!
Evidently our iPods and boarder's iPhone had problems sorting out the signals and finding the right addresses.  Moving the AE to a higher and slightly more central position also helped.
    Jim

Same here on a Vodafone PocketWiFi 2.
Tried NetworkManager, wicd, wifi-menu but all have the same issue.
I recently installed Aptosid on another machine and it has the same problem... It also has kernel version 3.9.
All the live CDs I've tried work, even an Arch CD from May works, though a current install does not.
I have no problems connecting to another (wpa2 enterprise) network yet can't on this 3G modem.
I'm hoping this isn't a permanent issue and perhaps an update very soon will fix this.
It seems the only way to fix this for now is to use an old version of Linux. I'm currently running a virtual machine only for the purpose of Internet sharing, very annoying.

  • "Please connect to the internet-"problem solved by the latest Muse-update

    Hi staff,
I'm happy to tell you that the former problem with the error message "Please connect to the internet…" when trying to start Muse is solved now by the latest update. At that time I talked to James Boag, he assumed Muse might not recognize my USB-modem (and I should try a different access point, which I didn't) but this is not an issue any more. When I launched Muse recently, it updated automatically and then started with no problems.
Thanks for the great work you've done in that matter.
    Regards

    Hi arrakis13,
I’m afraid I cannot really help you.
I did not make any changes on my running system except that I’m on 10.8 Mountain Lion (upgraded from 10.6.8., no Lion in between), but this did not change the behavior of Muse at first. Only the update, which started automatically when I launched the app on August, 21, (still the trial version) caused the difference.
My firewall is on and in the firewall-options Muse has allowance for incoming connections, see the attached screenshot (sorry, in german, but you will understand the meaning). Airport is not active and I did not change my way to connect to the internet (as James Boag from Adobe suggested earlier, see also attached mailing). It just worked.
Meanwhile I upgraded to the official version (2.0.945) and still it works.
    Hope you find a solution.
    Regards
    Norbert

This is still happening for me.  I downloaded the beta yesterday and am on 10.7.  I run software update but Muse is not showing up as having an update.  My firewall is not running.  Any suggestions on how I can get this running would be much appreciated.
    Please let me know.

  • Can't connect with modem through e2500 router

I have an old Speedstream 5100 modem hooked to my e2500 router. Everything works well except if for some reason my modem disconnects from ISP I can not log into it through the route to reconnect it. I must plug a direct cable into modem from computer run connect script then plug modem back into router all is fine again.
Any ideas why connecting to modem through router is blocked?

My Speedstream only has one Ethernet connection so I didn't realize that it looked like a router to the local network. I changed the mode to bridge on the Speedstream and setup PPoE on e2500 and reconnected to ISP on e2500 setup screen. That may solve the problem of reconnecting since now it is managed on the e2500.
One thing I now see is since I left the modem IP set to 192.168.0.X I can't get to it at all through the e2500. Is that because my DHCP in e2500 is setup with 192.168.1.X IP range so modem isn't addressed in my network? If I hook directly to Speedstream and change IP to 192.168.1.X will it become visible on local network?
You cannot access the modem anymore while you have an active PPPoE connection. For PPPoE the E2500 won't need an IP address from the modem thus it doesn't do DHCP on the WAN port and thus it never sees it. When you try to access 192.168.0.* addresses the E2500 will route it through the PPP tunnel to the ISP.
If you hook your computer directly to the SpeedStream it should automatically pick up a DHCP address (assuming the computer is still running on DHCP and not with a static IP and the SpeedStream does not automatically disable the DHCP server in bridge mode). If you have set up a static IP on the computer you have to change the IP address to a 192.168.0.* address.

  • CS-15 Modem Problem

    Hello,
I/ve a problem with CS-15 internet modem. I cannot create a profile under windows 7 (32bit). Everything runs well, instalation and so on. I open options/profiles then click 'new', select operator and then I cannot cilck 'OK'. There is also a small text 'Profile read only'. Of course without profile modem doesn't connect to internet 'Missing profile'.
On the other hand, everything runs very well on another laptop with windows XP - the program itselfs creates a profile, I only have to click connect after instalation.
I tried almost everything - reinstall new soft, tapisrv and other.
       Did anyone get thru this?
        Thanks

Well I have little different problem, with Nokia cs-15 and the network provider is DNA in Finland,
Neither does Nokia nor DNA is willing to help, those idiots just telling me to replace my brand new computer from win 7, 64 bit processor to something else like 32 bit or vista or like that, but they do not want to solve the problem.
Nokia, DNA and finnish people are IMPOTENT when it comes to problem solving, even in police and immigration i face so much problem and now being summer, forget about it, for 3 months, no body will be there in any of the government or private offices, you basically have to face curfew in finland, in summer. nothing gets done. and in winter, they are sad and depressed and drunk and in summer they take vacation for 3 months.

  • Network Connection - could not find a PPPoE server

This question is different from other similar ones I've read.
I have a Windows box that I use every day, connected to DSL by ethernet to a D-Link modem/router. I frequently connect/disconnect my MacBook Pro 10.6.8 and, until recently, all was well. It would be online as soon as it booted up. Now, while my Windows machine still gets online fine, MacBook says my ethernet is connected, but I can't get online. My DHCP is fine, but when I click the connect button for PPPoE, I get the message "Network Connection - could not find a PPPoE server". I didn't look but I'm assuming it was using both DHCP and PPPoE when it was working properly.
Took it to the shop and as soon as they plugged it in, it was online, with both the DHCP and PPPoE working.
My ISP says it must be a driver issue for PPPoE, something to do with the configuration. So 2 shops say they can only fix it by coming to my home, instead of me taking it in to them. Are they correct, or how can I fix it myself, bearing in mind that I'm fairly new with this?

    Hi Grant,
Got a different person at my ISP today, she says I have a dynamic IP address, so both my computers only need DHCP. We walked through my Windows machine network screen and it is definitely set up with just DHCP (just like the Mac). But she couldn't tell me why Windows was working and Mac wasn't. Which makes me wonder why the Apple shop told me to click on connect PPPoE!
She said when I took my Mac to the shop and both DHCP and PPPoE were showing as active, only the DHCP was needed and actually doing anything. And she couldn't tell me why I couldn't just take my Mac plus the router into the shop and get it set up there.
My UN and PW were 'admin', and I changed them long ago. Your instructions were identical to the router manual, but she couldn't tell me how to change them back to my chosen names if I followed those instructions. She also said a new router might fix the problem.
Everybody seems to have different ideas (in addition to the 2 sales pitches), and I'll admit that I'm concerned that if I re-set the router it might mess up Windows so it doesn't work either. So I'm frozen!

  • Problem with PPPoE

    Hi!
I am trying to get my ADSL connection working. It looks like this: there is a WAN cable that comes to modem and there are few ethernet outputs from the modem (it is PPPoE). One output is connected to the WiFi router and it works fine. When I try to connect computer directly to modem, connection does not work on Linux (it was working on Windows but Windows is out now). I have tried straight and crossed-over cables and neither NetworkManager nor rp-pppoe does not want to work. Log says that pppoe discovery packet is sent but there is no response.

You say you can connect the wifi router to the modem? Most probably the modem handle the pppoe stuff itself and give an address to the computer by dhcp.
Modem does not handle pppoe stuff itself. WiFi router is configured to use PPPoE with login and password and then makes WLAN I can connect. Dhcpcd can't find any dhcp server on the ethernet.

  • Broadband connection and speed problems

    Hi,
On Wednesday morning my broadband connection went down and could not reconnect from 600am til 700pm. It did manage to get a connection to stay up at around 900pm, but since then the connection has dropped about four times a day.
I have checked my equipment, wiring etc, connected directly to the test socket, using  a new ADSL microfilter etc etc. I have also checked for known problems in my area and have done some quiet call tests(17070).
There are apparently no problems in my area, but a couple of the quiet call tests were crackly.
Since last night (Friday) at around 900pm the connection has managed to stay up but my connection speeds, both up and down are much much lower than they used to be.
Since Wednesday night I have performed some BT speedtests.
D/L Profile for my line is - 17.64 Mbps, but actual speed currently varies between around 8 and 11 Mbps.
U/L Profile for my line is - 0.83 Mbps, but speed currenty varies between 0.01 and 0.3 Mbps.
Before Wednesday, my download speeds were typically 16-17Mbps and upload speeds were typically 0.8Mbps.
    With very little variation.
I have included some stats from my BT HH3...
    Wednesday nights ADSL Line status,  after I managed to get a connection to stay up. below;
    ADSL Line Status
    Connection Information
    Line state: Connected
    Connection time: 0 days, 04:59:49
    Downstream: 18.65 Mbps
    Upstream: 443.9 Kbps
    ADSL Settings
    VPI/VCI: 0/38
    Type: PPPoA
    Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
    Latency type: Fast
    Noise margin (Down/Up): 4.9 dB / 26.4 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up): 11.1 dB / 5.3 dB
    Output power (Down/Up): 20.1 dBm / 12.9 dBm
    FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0
    CRC Events (Down/Up): 758 / 36
    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    HEC Events (Down/Up): 23957 / 6
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 300 / 4
    Current ADSL line status. After the line being up for 17 hours below;
    ADSL Line Status
    Connection Information
    Line state: Connected
    Connection time: 0 days, 17:17:36
    Downstream: 19.52 Mbps
    Upstream: 443.9 Kbps
    ADSL Settings
    VPI/VCI: 0/38
    Type: PPPoA
    Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
    Latency type: Fast
    Noise margin (Down/Up): 3.2 dB / 28.1 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up): 11.0 dB / 5.2 dB
    Output power (Down/Up): 20.2 dBm / 12.2 dBm
    FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0
    CRC Events (Down/Up): 133 / 36
    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    HEC Events (Down/Up): 636 / 9
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 117 / 4
One thing that stands out is the Noise Margin of 4.9dB and now 3.2dB. I gather that these values are on the low side. Is 3.2dB acceptable?
I assume my line attenuation values are low as I live very close to my local exchange. I assume that these values are good.
There are some CRC HEC and Error Seconds values. I must admit that I dont fully understand these but I assume these are not good.
One other thing worth mentioning is that the phone cable to my property comes along my front wall over from a neighbouring property. Whilst checking this cable this morning in the daylight, I have noticed that someone, most probably my neighbour, has pulled the cable way from its fixing on the wall in order to put a fence post up on the wall.
The fence post has been there for a few months, with no apparent affect ro my phone and broadband, but I'm concerned that this could have damaged the cable, splitting the shielding or breaking a wire in the cable, or perhaps loosened the connectors to the juntion box it is connected to on the neighbours wall.
Could damage to the cable be the cause of my connection and speed problems?
Also, is it possible that my BTHH3 is faulty?
Any advice would be very welcome.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    A little more information.
I have noticed that on a number of occasions when making or receiving voice calls, the broadband connection completely drops. It doesnt happen on all calls, and doesnt seem to happen when just going 'offhook' and listening to a dialling tone.
There is a definite crackle and hiss on most of the voice calls. But only seems to be audible on the home phone.
After a little browsing, I came upon a logging program "Routerstatshub". When I leave this running it logs changes to ADSL stats.
Looking at the logs, I've noticed that when making voice calls, the upstream noise margin always seems to drop considerably, sometimes down to 0dB.
On some calls, both upstream and downstream noise margin drop to 0dB and the broadband connection drops.
I have also noticed that upstream line attenuation increases from around 5dB to around 28dB every hour or so. This doesnt appear to coincide with the voice calls.
CRC and HEC error increase dramatically at the same time as the noise margin changes. HEC goes up by 10s of thousands.
I'm still directly connected into the mastersocket with a new microfilter and no extension cable.
By the way, my connection speeds went down to an all time low yesterday , 1.7Mbps down.
I have now replaced my DECT phone with a corded phone and will make some more voice calls to see if that makes any difference.
Any ideas about what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated.

Then, PC can connect modem and work properly.  How can I solve this problem. Is there any problem on my wifi driver or something else? Please help me.

Thanks. How long is the delay?
I've had that on my Late 2007 MBP since Day One but the delay is usually only seconds--no more that three on a bad day.
I think its to do with waking from sleep. The standard sleep mode in the MBP is :Safe Sleep" where the computer writes the contents of RAM to the hard drove before sleeping as a safety net against the battery running dry while the computer sleeps. If the computer has to read this spot of info before completely awaking.
When I first purchased my MacBook Pro, a month ago, it would connect immediately upon waking from sleep. Now, for some unknown reason, it will not
That could be the result of now having more to write before sleep than when the computer was new because it's been in use a while and had other software added. For a test, see if the delay is reduced if you quit all open apps before sleep.
Having  DashBoard active could also be a contibutor becasue many widgets have to "phone phone" for updates and could be preempting the connection opening for regular use. I use this widget:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/dashquit_berenguierduncan.html
to shut down Dashboard without having to restart the computer. It's a carry-over from the old days of slower computers and expensive RAM but i find it still useful. This does not harm Dashboard or make if unavailable later. It 's basically the "off switch" that DashBoard should have been granted.
If, after quitting active programs and Dashboard, the delay is still more than a few seconds, then something else is at play. As the computer is new and under warranty, I would let an Apple Store look at it.

i am trying to connect to my friend's wifi, i have a very strong signal indicated on my ipad, but cannot connect to the internet.  Yesterday i connected without any problem, can anybody tell me why i cannot connect today?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I have a new time capsule (replace my old time capsule).  I want to erase my old one.  My computer does not see the old one anymore, how do I connect it (the old TC is not connected to modem).  I want to erase it and then use it as either a second hard drive (sired/sirelesly?) or as a hard drive/bridge.  So,

    3.  Can I use the old one as a supplemental hard drive

    1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
    2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
    3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
    4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for.
