How do I connect my electro acoustic Takamine, nylon string guitar, to the iMac to record with Garage Band?

If its's an Electric Acoustic as you said (it takes a battery), then it SHOULD work plugged directly in. If it does not take a battery than, yes, you need an audio interface:

I've been using it for years. You will also need an audio app that will allow recording - I use Sound Studio, but check the app store for others. -

I've searched and searched, and I can't find a 'clear cut' answer.

How do I connect my guitar to the iMac? I have heard that using the mini plug into the 'line in' on the back of the iMac isn't ideal. So what do I need to get? My local Sam Ash musicstore doesn't have helpful people, so I need you all to tell me what to buy?
Oh yeah.. I don't have much money, so I just need to be able to play my guitar using Garageband and all its effects.

The job of that line-in port is not to boost the level, but to convert an analog signal to a digital one, and it does that in a decent manner.
And I've also read that the audio-in on the iMac can cause delays in the sound you hear, along with other strange behavior.
GB always has problems with latency (that's the term for it), and that might indeed be worse when you use the line-in since the computer has to do the conversion and run GB. But the bulk of the CPU load is in GB, especially when you put a lot of effects on the guitar, so don't hope for too much difference when you use an expensive interface.
I can try the headphone out to the audio-in on the back of the iMac, but I guess I'm worried, as I have also read (on here), that you could blow your port if you aren't careful.
You can blow your computer if you use a speaker out, headphones should be fine. Crank them up slowly and watch the signal. -
Connecting my guitar to my IMAC?
I'm trying to play my electric guitar through my IMAC. I have external speakers connected to my Headphones socket in the back of my MAC, how do i go about playing my guitar through those speakers?
I have an adapter that will allow me to connect my guitar cable into one of the sockets in the back of my MAC but i'm not sure how to set it all up and what socket to plug what into???

I just want to learn to play guitar. How can I connect a guitar to my iMac. Help doesn't specify a cable and Im not sure what brand will be compatible.
What kind of guitar do you have? Does it have a pre-amp?
Your iMac does not have an audio-in port. That is why Csound1 recommended audio interfaces, that will turn a USB port into a high-quality audio input port, suitable for a guitar.
If you just want to try out an electric guitar, you could use an input splitter and connect it to the headphone port, if your guitar has a pre-amp,

Or use the iMic adapter ( Recording with iMic in GarageBand). But both will not make you happy for a long time. The audio quality is not that good. -
How Do I connect my iAxe electric guitar?
Just got iLife '09 and a brand new iAxe 393 electric guitar for my son. To follow the lessons in GB '09 (he, and I, have never played at all) what do I need to do to connect the guitar to the iMac? Do I just need to plug in the USB cable, or does there need to be some intermediary (like an amp)?

it's obviously set as line in as when I sing into the mic the in-built is picking up nothing - but neither is my mic (whic is working fine on my amp, so is ok)

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

I have a problem.
I bought Pages and Numbers for my iMac and so far everything was OK.
Suddenly i have a problem with connection to iCloud.
Dokuments created on iMac in Pages or Numbers are not transfered to iCloud. Not uploaded to iCloud. There is a sign (small shape of iCloud), that they are waiting to be uploaded to iCloud.
I think the iCloud is OK.
i can see and manage documents in iCloud. i can create them on iPad and see them and delete them in iCloud.
But not on iMac.
i dont know what has happened and I am not abble to find the solution. It was OK till some days ago….I have a similar problem! Everything stopped working after upgrading to Mac OS 10.8.4 through the App Store. Help!

Hi I am trying to connect my mba mid 2011 with an imac 27" 2011 with target display mode tdm. When I am using a thunderbolt cable nothing will work. When I use a minidisplay cable, both screens turn blue but eventually nothing happens. What is the problem

2009 24-inch iMac 3.06GHz (EMC no. 2267). I don't get any audio when connecting my Sony HD TV to my iMac via mini DisplayPort. Is there a fix or hardware upgrade? I'm using a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable w/ audio support.
You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV. -
