Connecting a Television

Hello, my name is Nate and I am going to be starting my first year at college next week. I already have purchased my laptop (a MacBook Pro) but I have not yet decided upon a television that I would like to bring. I am wondering if anyone has any input about which TV, idealistically a flat screen (Space is an issue-my dorm is a large shoe box) that is both inexpensive and compatible with my computer. I would like to be able to use the campus' free cable and then also hook my computer up to the television so that I can watch a DVD. I am considering a LG Flatron L172WT 17" Widescreen LCD Color Monitor with TV Tuner but before I go ahead and spend a large amount of money I would like to first solicit any addition input. If anyone has any sort of insight or experience with this matter please post back.
Thanks, Nate

You might consider watching your TV on your computer. There are several devices from Elgato, and ADS Tech Pro A/V Link (I love mine) that are inexpensive, and easy to use through iMovie, or their own software. You might need a DVD or VHS player to accept the coax cable, and then run RCA or S-video from there, to the box. Then, firewire to your computer. This is cheap, and takes up little space. You can capture and turn whatever you wish into wonderful DVD's, too, if you like. Even edit out commercials from those home movies.

  • Satellite L300-29X - How to connect to television?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300-29X with a mini-VGA output and would like to connect it to my television, preferably through the DVI-I dual analogue/digital input, but cannot find a cable that will do this. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I live in the UK and as such, only have access to UK based retailers and do not want to pay the exorbitant costs of importing from overseas.
If all else fails, I could connect through the SCART input on my TV, but again, could anyone point me in the right direction of a cable that could do this?
Cheers in advance for any help.
    C
I've also just noticed my TV has a 9-pin RS232 input as well if that is any help?

OK, I think I know what I need now, obviously I've been getting myself confused somewhere.
I must have read something somewhere about mini-VGA ports and got my wires crossed, so to speak. I tried a VGA cable from an old monitor and it fits nicely, it's just that my laptop doesn't have the bits for the screws to go into, so I presume that is the only difference that makes it "mini".
Anyway, thanks for all the help guys and hopefully once I can locate the correct cable and adapter, I'll be able to watch my new star trek film boxset on a decent size screen! Good Times! :-D

  • Connecting to television

What kind of cable do I need to connect my mac book pro to my television

    Hi Rick,
It depends on the model of your MBP and the connections your TV has available. One setup for the older MBPs is a DVI to HDMI or VGA adapter, and a 3.5mm stereo mini jack for audio.

  • Connection To Television

How do I go about connecting the iMac to my tv??
What exactly do I need to buy? - my tv has s-video.
And are there any settings that I need to turn on to get a picture.
    Al.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Elgato makes a variety of Firewire and USB S-Video boxes for receiving TV signal and picking it up on your iMac. As for sending a signal to a TV from an iMac, Startech makes several like this one:

You'll need a Mini-VGA to VGA adapter from the Apple Store to connect to it.

  • HT4204 I have iPhone 3GS , you mean to say I can't use face time also I can't connect with television

Hi, how can I use face time on my iPhone 3gs

FaceTime is not on the iPhone 3GS because it does not have a front-facing camera. Think about it - if you wanted to use the camera, you'd have to turn the phone around - but then you wouldn't be able to see the other person.
FaceTime is on iPod touch 4th Gen, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and The New iPad.

  • Adjust/move picture on connected television

I have connected my television to my Mac Pro with an S-Video cable. It works (800x600 resolution), but somehow the picture is not centered and there are black areas on the top and the bottom.
Now I would like to adjust the picture so it fits the TV screen. I've already tried "Overscan" but this way there are parts of the desktop missing
I have also installed Linux on that machine and in Linux I can move and adjust the TV-out picture in the "AMD Catalyst Control Panel". Is there a way (or an application) that can do that on Mac OS?

As Ogelthorpe says you will need to use your audio output port for the sound.
Use the HDMI for video and something like this to connect to TV sound (this carries sound)

I use it on my 2009 MBP, works great.

  • How to connect apple tv and airport express on same Hi-Fi?

    Hello everybody,
My question first : Is it possible to output the sounds directly from the Apple TV to my Airport Express (via Airplay, wifi, or whatever connection) and connect with the jack my Airport Express to the stereo? This way I could hear the sound from my tv or listen to my music via airplay the way I want.
Now, the long explanation : I have a Tivoli sound system which only has a Jack as input plug. I also have an Apple TV (2) to watch movies. For my movies, as my stereo doesn't have any optical audio input, I've connected the television directly to the stereo. As I used to listen music from my Iphone on the dock aswell, I installed a double jack adaptor to permit two connections to my stereo (1 for the iPhone dock and 1 for the television).
Now things have changed a bit. I bought an airport express to replace the dock station.
The problem is that I can't use the double jack adaptor anymore. If I want to watch tv I have no sounds from stereo until I unplug the airport express Jack. The reverse works, I can listen to my music when both airport Express and television are connected.
If you have an idea? Let me know.
    Thks.
    Christophe

....... Is it possible to output the sounds directly from the Apple TV to my Airport Express
    Unfortunately not.

  • I have an iphone 4G-S, I get "NO SIGNAL" when trying to view Netflix while the digital AV cable is connect to my tv an my TV is on. If TV is off, signal is fine and video plays from netflix fine. Any ideas?

    Steps I follow:
    1. turn phone on
    2. ensure signal is strong (att)
    3. launch netflix
    4. select and play video
    5. watch video play for several minutes
    6. plug in digital av adaptor with HDMI cable (not yet connected to television)
    7. ensure video continues to play
    8. connect HDMI cable to television (television not yet powered on)
    9. ensure video continues to play
    10. turn on Television
Result: video stops, results in "NO SIGNAL" as in no bars
    11. Turn off television signal comes back and video resumes play
Is Apple or netflix purposefuly blocking the signal?

I should add that I see the video playing for about 30 seconds, everything looks and plays fine, then I get the "NO SIGNAL" and all att bars go away.
also, I'm using my phone istead of my laptop becuase I don't have internet service at home, wanted to just use my phone and it's unlimitted data plan to be able to watch netflix.

  • Connect iChat to TV

    Hi everyone...

    Thanks

    OK, Ben.

You can download a copy of the manual for your particular iBook by optionClicking on the link for one of these manuals:
iBook G4 (Mid 2005) User's Guide (Manual), or
iBook G4 (Late 2004) Getting Started (Manual)
If you do not know which G4 iBook you have, I suggest you download both and look at the pictures to select the appropriate manual.
Regardless of which is for your iBook, Chapter 3 contains instruction for connecting to a TV and for using your Headphone port for connecting to audio. Instructions are very similar for either G4 iBook version.
If you cannot find help with the downloaded manual either, you can get a start by clicking on these web links:
Connecting a television to use as a display,
Changing your display settings when connected to a TV, and
Setting up multiple displays as an extended desktop
If you need connectors, cabling, or additional help, I suggest you see your local Apple retailer or computer equipment dealer. He can supply any hardware you may need and answer any questions you have about the information in the links above.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Imac to HD TV

Ok, I bought a Mini DVI to S-video cable so i could connect my IMac to my HD TV for watching movies and what not. But when I connect the Mini DVI cable every thing gets larger. Is this normal? Should I even worry about trying to fix it? Thanks for any help or advice.

    Hi Corey
Go to: System Preferences / Display adjust the resolution for both the iMac and the TV.
To keep both imac and TV displays set to your preferred preference settings.
    1. Use only extended desktop, switching to mirroring realy goofs up the imac's resolution.
    2. Leave the Mini DVI adapter, S-Video and TV connected up to the iMac and just turn off or change the input for the TV.
It takes a little time to get use to how it works. On one of my first times out I thought I had lost iPhoto for sure! After dragging the iPhoto window to the TVs display to play a slideshow, I them turned the TV off! Later I could not find iPhoto and after some time sweating bullets in a panic, I turned on the TV and what a releaf there it was!
To view a movie on the TV just drag the DVD Player Viewer over to the TV's display and select full screen from View on the menu bar. This will allow you to play the movies on the TV display and leave the iMac's display on desktop for normal use.

  • Does my MacBook passes audio through Mini Display Port or not?

I recently bought a Mini DisplayPort > HDMI adapter in order to display my MacBook on my TV. Other users of the same adapter publicly stated that they got video AND audio out, but I got only video.
I've been searching this online for two days now and I still don't know why (I even searched this support forum, but I must admit that I got a little lost and decided to write my own topic). All I discovered was that some MacBooks have this capacity (to port audio along with video through Mini DisplayPort) and others don't.
I'm using a white MacBook unibody bought new and latest on late 2009. It's the first model with multitouch trackpad and without FireWire port. Its model name is "MacBook 6,1", I guess.
Does anybody know for sure if It CAN, in fact deliver audio+video through the Mini DisplayPort if I'm using a compatible HDMI adapter?
    Thanks.

These models pass audio through the display port:
iMac (Late 2009), MacBook Pro (Mid 2010), MacBook (Mid 2010), and Mac mini (Mid 2010) supply multichannel audio (up to 8 channels) and video signals over Mini DisplayPort. To connect your television or other HDMI devices to your Mac, use select third-party Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters that conform to the VESA v1.1a DisplayPort Interoperability Guidelines. The following adapters adhere to these standards:
    - Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support
    - Griffin Video Display Converter (Mini DisplayPort to HDMI and DVI)

  • Is there a way to make sure my MBP doesn't use a particular resolution or ?

This may be a stupid question. I am hooking my MBP to my lcd tv. When I first connected the television, my tv displayed the message "mode not supported". Having played a little at this I simply went to my display preferences and looked at what resolution was running to my tv. (I have my display preferences in the toolbar) It was running 1920x1080 at 60Hz and right above that there was another 1920x1080 at 60Hz so I clicked on that and my external display lit right up. (Turns out the second resolution's refresh rate is actually 59.9Hz) So no problem right? Well I use this set up as sort of a media center so I like to run my MBP with its lid closed. When I close the lid, and rewake the MBP, my television gives me the message "mode not supported". So there is a signal but the tv can't display it. This leads me to believe that when I close the lid on my MBP it decides to run at the 60Hz as opposed to the functional 59.9Hz. The problem is I can't see the display to change the resolution or refresh rate. Is there a way to make sure my MBP doesn't use a particular resolution or refresh rate? I have tried changing it before I close the lid. I have tried it in mirrored display mode. Nothing works so far. Please Help!

Not really. In the Displays preferences you can only check the option to show supported resolutions, but that only will be present with another display connected (I believe.) On laptops it isn't an option, obviously, but it may be present once you connect an external display.
You might try using the shareware utility SwitchResX - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Using Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable

Using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable from a 2010 MacBook Air is playing up, making it practically unusable. Essentially what happens is that when connecting a television set using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable the picture is perfect but no longer than 30 seconds at a time before the picture 'goes to sleep'. Is there a setting I need to change? There must be a setting that I can change which I haven't worked out yet. Thanks in advance for your help

has there been an answer to this yet?
