Connecting a Thunderbolt external HDD to FW800 port
Can I read/write from my late 2009 iMac to a Thunderbolt external HDD by connecting from the FW800 port on the iMac through a Thunderbolt to FW800 adaptor on the external HDD? I have a new MacBook Pro and want to be able to swap an external HDD between them with maximum tranfer speeds on each.
It's for video files for editing depending on which computer I want to work on at the time (and location). It's not a drama, just trying to make it easier for myself and not keep too many big files on the internal drives. I can also put one of my FW800 drives on the MacBook and transfer between the two external drives (or MacBook and FW800) and plug it back on the iMac.
Or I could buy a new iMac when I win the lottery!
Thanks for you help and suggestions anyway. Much appreciated.

TS4531 Thunderbolt external HDD on Windows 8
Windows 8 doesn't recognise the thunderbolt external HDD if plugged in while the OS is running.
If I reboot the system , its working good.
The plug n play is not working.
I have tried turning off the 'Turn on fast startup' option but no success. The thunderbolt device is recognised only when plugged in before system boot.it's because of the thunderbolt implementation in windows
same issue with the few motherboards which support thunderbolt
out for build self windows computers
maybe microsoft will change the windows implementation if thunderbolt becomes a success on normal windows computers
though since intel require a higher copyright for licensing thunderbolt then they do usb3 then thunderbolts success on windows is unknown -
Can I connect an additional External HDD through USB?
Hi,
I would like to know if it's possible to connect an additional external HDD to the Time Capsule and share it like on the AirPort Extreme with "Hard Drive Sharing".
I think it's called an AirPort Disk, through USB.
Thanks!I had two drives, two printers and a powered USB hub. The best I ever got the AEBS to read was the two printers and one drive. I haven't tried it yet with the Time Capsule as the hard drive onboard made the the other two expendable.
I still do have access to the secondary drive but am in the middle of an archive of the time capsule as there's something wrong with the Time Capsule drive or directory. Once I get that straightened out I will test two drives in the hub and see if Time Capsule is any better suited to multiple externals.

Thunderbolt, External HDDs and an iMac connectivity
Hi,
So I have the aluminum unibody 13inch macbook. (Snowleopard) I also have a mid 2011 iMac 27 inch. (Lion)
I am looking into buying a RAID arranged external HDD, such as the LaCie 2Big 6tb or WD 6tb units and would like to utiliise the associated sped for video editing. However both see to only have thunderbolt connections.
I frequently shoot video in the field and load for preview on my Macbook. So how would I go about getting the media from the macbook to the RAID media store once I'm back at home?
Can I:
Connect the macbook as a tethered disk to the iMac and then use the iMac to transfer from the Macbook to the RAID? I appreciate the transfer limitation will be the USB connection to the macbook in ths case, but would it work?
As an additional question, since the Macbook has wifi and ethernet connectivity, which would be the fastest data transfer rate that I could use?
Thanks in advance, any other solutoin would be appreciated...BDAqua, 480Mbit/s vs 100Mbps. Is the former in MBITS and the latter in MBYTES, meaning wifi is much faster?
Secondly, just to confirm my understanding, the situation above I would effectively be using the iMac as 'pass through' device, transfering data direct to the HDD without efecting the iMac storage. I appreciate this sounds very like pretty novice questions, but then its because I am. Much appreciated.

How to connect many devices with only one FW800 port in iMac?
Hi,
I am upgrading to a new Intel iMac from a 2004 vintage Dual2.0GHz PowerMac. I currently have 8x d2 Quadra drives chained by FW800, and 2x Iomega drives connected vis FW400 hub which also connects HD cams.
My questions is that with only one FW800 port in iMac, I think my devices connectivity is the following?
(1) Get a FW 800 hub (I can only find 2 port ones at the Apple store and BestBuy)
(2) Connect the d2 Quadras to one port of the FW800 hub
(3) Get a FW 800 to FW 400 cable
(4) Connect my 6 port FW400 hub to the 2nd port of the FW800 hub
Thanks for reviewing this solution, and I would also appreciate other suggestions or hear about your experiences if you have a similar set-up.
WillIn addition to your listed considerations, you should consider the following.
Many storage needs do not required FireWire 800 speed. For example, USB 2.0 works fine for your Time Machine backup drive. If you are just storing user data such as your iPhoto or iTunes media files, USB 2.0 is more than fast enough. So, as much as possible, if any of those external drives have USB 2.0 connections and the data storage does not need FireWire 800 speed, offload as much as possible to USB 2.0. I used to be a +FireWire snob+, but since getting an Intel iMac, I find that USB 2.0 works quite well for most data storage purposes.
There are new hard drives that are power efficient and as large as 2TB. Consolidate your data storage needs onto a smaller number of very large drives, partitioned as needed. This will make your setup more reliable (smaller number drives), and save reduce power consumption. If any of your current externals are SATA, you can probably replace the existing drive with an extra large one.
So, I think you setup should be, extra large FireWire 800 drive connected to the FireWire 800 port directly. Using a 9-pin to 6-pin cable, connect the FireWire 400 hub. Connect any non-storage FireWire 400 devices there. Do some data transfer testing to make sure having the 400 hub there on the chain does not cause the 800 connection to slow down.
Connect other drives as needed using USB 2.0, existing or new. Retire the smaller of your external drives. -
Can I connect two USB external hdds at once?
Can I connect two external hdds by USB at once and then transfer between the two?
Yes. The practical limit is 126 drives (you need the appropriate USB hub to do that, of course )

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
USB port gone after ejecting external HDD
All software uptodate.
I have strange issue with USB ports. After ejecting USB drive (external HDD, powered by USB bus), which worked perfectly, USB port does not recognize anything, nor providing power. Turning MBP off and then booting back solves this issue.
Any ideas? After some time I connected external HDD to "dead" port again. And got power. But still no devices recognized on this port. For example: iPad does not charge, not recognized.

Does Time Machine backup External HDDs?
Hello everyone, I plan to use a Mac-Mini as an HTPC, and want to use a large external HDD connected DIRECTLY to the mini as my storage (call it HDD-A).
If I connect a second external HDD dedicated for TM (HDD-B), will it backup content from HDD-A as well as the OS?
Q2: Are there any special settings in TM necessary to accomplish this?
Q3: Separate TM question: Anyway to get TM to backup an External HDD that's connected to an AEBS?
Thanks much in advance!I am in the same situation, riesar. I have 2 time-machine-enabled macs connected to a 500GB Time Capsule. My Mac Pro has 4 drives (boot, bootClone, Video Archive, Video Archive Clone) I use Time Machine to backup my Main boot drive, with a couple of exclusions including all other HD's. I excluded my Parallels folder since Each windows installation is about 10GB and the ENTIRE file changes each time you open your virtual PC. I also exclude my parallels installation from my iMac Time Machine file as well.
Every couple of days, My Boot drive clones itself (using SuperDuper!) to the BootClone and the Video Drive clones itself to the Video Clone. I don't have incremental backups of my video (or Windows installation) but I save SIGNIFICANT space by excluding certain things from time machine. My iMac clones itself to an external firewire drive as well.
If you were REALLY cramped for space on the Time Machine volume, you could simply include only - say - the User folder. You'd sacrifice the ability to restore your system to a previous state, but you'd have incremental backups of all your regularly changing data files. Your clone could restore your system, but if you ever had to restore your system, your recovery is only as good as you last clone. YMMV.

Hi - my 2011 Mac Pro no longer recognizes devices in the usb ports, I've been told it's the logic board. is there a way I can connect the iomega external hard drive to it through the firewire or thunderbolt ports?

Ok, fair enough. But since Job's death - Apple's control on leaks has been terrible. I got the new iPhone, and I like it - but it hasn't made nearly as big as an impression as previous ones. Because of the vast ammount of leaks. With the iPad mini leaks, it's 99% sure to come out next week.
Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers. It's possible to do so, I just want to know how. I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing? -

I have a macbook air and I connect it to an external HDD via thunderbolt and nothing happens....
If a PRAM reset fails to help, an appointment at the Apple store genius bar would be the next option.

Windows 8 and Canvio Desk 3TB: System will not boot when external hdd is connected
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-e-g/HP-PAVILION-A6109N-amp-windows-8-System-w...
Hi,
just recently upgraded to Win Pro on my HP PAVILION A6109N. I also bought a toshiba canvio desk 3TB. What I notice is that if I reboot my pc with the extermnal HDD connected, my system will not boot.
I have check my BIOS boot settings and the order of the boot.
I have tried disabling USB Legacy Support in the BIOS
I have reformatted the external HDD
but still my desktop will not boot if the external HDD is connected....If I disconnect the external HDD...the system will boot up ....
I am at a loss....*** scratching my head ***Update: The only solution for me was to format the drive as ext3 and plug it into one of my Asus RT-N66U USB ports, as most routers don’t yet recognize 3TB drives as NTFS. It’s not much help to people who don’t have a router with this capability, and it also slows transfer rates to ~12MB/s.
Given the short length of the cable, your only other options are to have the 3TB Canvio sitting right next to you so you can unplug from a front USB port before each boot, or place it towards the rear of your desk and crawl under the desk to disconnect it from your PC prior to each boot.
It's a pity because Toshiba produce great internal HDD's, but my experience when it comes to external drives is they're simply junk. I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing.
