Connecting a VCR to your iMac

Am I hallucinating or do I remember reading that you can connect a VCR to your iMac and capture VHS video to your hard drive and then create a DVD using a video editing program?? Is this even possible?

The issue here is that you have a an analog recording device (the VCR) and a computer that will only accept a digital video input. Therefore you need a way to convert the analog signal to a digital signal. There are a few devices which can do this. One of them was linked to in an earlier post. There are some others but all of them cost around $200.00. Your Sony camera will not do it as it is not a digital camera but also uses an analog tape and has analog outputs designed for hooking it in to a TV.
Your choices are to buy a device, like the ElGato one to convert the signal or to buy a digital camcorder. I believe another company that makes these devices is Canopus. Other than that you could pay someone to convert the tape(S) for you. Depending on how many you have that may be more expensive than buying the conversion device that you need.
If you only have one tape maybe you could borrow a friends digital camcorder to do this one time.

That depends on what you are using it for. The advantage of connecting it to the router is that you can share the drive over your home network and/or over the Internet. That can be convenient but drive access is performed at network speed - slower than when connected directly to the computer. If you need/want to share the drive, connect it to the router, otherwise connect it directly to the computer.

Just bought an iMac 17" with the 2.0 cpu. It is connected to the internet via a wireless dsl router elsewhere in our house. No problems, my daughter has put nearly 15-hours on the net with no complaints so far, fingers crossed, of course.
[I have an older Dell pc and a vcr/dvd player connected using RCA plugs directly from the player into my video & sound cards. I have the option of using the S-video cable as well.]
I asked the dealer if it was possible to connect a vcr/dvd player to the iMac for viewing only, and the salesperson did not know. Has anyone seen such a device? A customer at the Apple Store said that I might have to bypass Apple's OS and get a copy of Windows. I thought I was getting rid of the pc when I switched to the iMac.
Any help would be appreciated!

I use a Dazzle Hollywood DV bridge. It's a firewire A/D converter that lets me capture composite or s-video to my iMac. I also use it to watch TV on my desktop using a VCR and Video Viewer utility.
I would recommend you use a firewire device to ensure maximum compatibility with the Mac (iMovie, etc.) with no need for drivers. In the case of the Hollywood Bridge, it was sold as a Windows only product. But as a firewire device, no software was needed for the Mac. It works great with all video/media software and is recognized like any firewire camcorder.
Although the Hollywood bridge isn't sold anymore, you can find them on ebay. Otherwise, you can research any video A/D converter device such as those sold by Pinnacle (pinnaclesys.com).

Thanks this has helped me solve the problem.
I used the Outlook Anywhere connectivity tester you suggested. Selected Outlook autodiscover.
It told me that it could not resolve things on any of the 4 tests.
I saw that using the last test "Attempting to contact the Autodiscover service using the DNS SRV redirect method", was the only one likely to work in my case.
I had already changed 3 entries in dns to point at my DDNS address but this had not worked, from the errors I could see that it was just the certificate name not matching so I changed the DNS entries for Autodiscover, autoconfig and _autodiscover._tcp
to be webmail.domain.com which is a CNAME to my ddns address for the broadband router, which in turn forwards ports 80 and 443 to the exchange server for owa and activesync access. I got an error message saying that I had an illegal entry in my SRV record
as a CNAME is not allowed, but it saved the change anyway.
I reran the test and it worked.I can now make new outlook clients attach teo exchange.
Thank you, after 8 hours yesterday of trying to reolve this I suddnely got it to work on one laptop but the other still would not and had lost track of what I could have changed so had no idea what actually made it work.

If you have a wifi router you can set up/turn on the wifi... set the user name and password wifi in your router... open wifi in general settings on the iPhone... log into your router, user name and password. (If your don't know how to turn on the router wifi. Google the router make and model and you will find instructions on how to do this.)
If you don't have a wifi router and your Mac has wifi capabilities you can hookup to the internet over wifi from your Mac to your iPhone.
System Preferences on the Mac... Network... Wifi... Advanced tab... Hit the '+' to add a user name and password...
Make sure you use WPA2 Personal for Security... Hit ok... Turn on the wifi... Same as above with the iPhone, log into your wifi settings on the iPhone.
*Important point... Use WPA2 for the encryption/Security setting. If you use anything else for this setting, your wifi can be hacked.

In order to connect the Mac to your TV, first you have to buy a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (your computer has got a Thunderbolt port, but it's compatible with Mini DisplayPort cables and adapters). I'm really hoping someone can help me with this as I've been struggling with it since my upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. I run OS X 10.5.2 (all updated,etc.) on two machines - an Intel Macbook and iMac, with an airport extreme base station (updated) as the router. Both are using the same account names, but have different computer names (B's Macbook, B's iMac, etc.). So, attached to the iMac is an external hard drive connected via FW800, split into two volumes (Time Machine, Video Library). When I first tried to share these after the upgrade to 10.5.0 I had various permission errors with that "Unknown" user account. That seems to have been all cleared up, and in fact the two aforementioned volumes (Time Machine, Video Library) are now completely new and on a new FW drive. Problem is, I can't connect to the "Video Library" from the Macbook, even though sharing is allowed and I can connect to the the "Time Machine" volume fine. It shows up in the finder sidebar, under the Macbook, but when I try to connect I get this..
the operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Video Library" cannot be found
When I view the iMac via the Samba share listed in the finder (since Windows Sharing is turned on via the iMac - and I tried turning this off, doesn't change anything) I see 8 volumes labeled video library, video library-1, video library-2, etc. all the way through video library-7. Now, I click on these and get the same error. But I am 99% sure that Leopard is confused and can't find the correct link to the Video Library because all of these dead links are still floating around somewhere, but I don't know how to clear it out and reset. In fact, I used to have the same problem sharing the Time Machine volume, but during one replacement of the hard drive, I changed the volume name from "Time Machine Drive" to just "Time Machine" and it of course started working fine, I can access the drive without problems, etc.
So, after all of that explaining, it really comes down to the fact that something seems to be stuck in Leopard thinking that the link to the "Video Library" volume is broken or invalid, Smaba sees it as 8 volumes (btw all other shared volumes have only one entry in the Samba view), and everything is confused. The working solution would be to rename the Video Library volume, and connect. Problem is I have over 1,000 movies/tv shows/etc. in iTunes on that drive and if I change the volume name all those links will get screwed up. Any other ideas? I've spotlight searched for video library-# to look for a preference file somewhere that is trying to remember the link, but to no effect. I am sure it has to do with the growing pains associated with the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and the user IDs, etc. Repair permissions won't work since it's an external drive. Any thoughts?

Try unmounting the volume on your iMac using Disk Utility. Then mount it again. You may need to reboot the laptop or relaunch its Finder process (using the Force Quit window) after remounting the drive on your iMac. Remember that no process may be accessing any files on the drive you plan to unmount, or the unmount will fail. Unmounting and remounting an external drive on my iMac made it become visible on my MacBook Pro after it had disappeared.

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit. ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering. I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

In general you would unplug the monitor from the Mac Pro and then directly connect the monitor to the xBox 360 (with the correct adapter cable, depending on which version of the xBox 360 you have). However, if you don't have permission from the owner of the lab to be connecting and disconnecting cables you shouldn't be doing that. Buy a cheap 1080p TV and use your xBox 360 at home.
