Connecting aiport extreme and airport express via ethernet cable ?

Is it possible to connect an airport extreme to an airport express via ethernet cable, I ask because I want to expand the range of my wifi network to the basement of my house, the floors are really thick concrete so I installed some ethernet cable runs, I hope somebody can help me, thank you.

Yes, this is exactly correct.
To configure each AirPort Express (AX)
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name your device, assign a device password and adjust time zone settings. Give each Express a separate name so you can identify then easily.
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode...Create a Wireless Network
Wireless Network Name...Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) if you want to use 2.4 GHz
Channel...Automatic
Wireless Security...Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password....Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Click the Internet icon
Change the Connection Sharing setting at the bottom to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the AirPort Express will restart in 20-30 seconds
I think it is easier to configure each AirPort Express with AirPort Utility by temporarily connecting it to your computer with a short ethernet cable. Once you have saved the configuration, you can move the Express to the location that you need.

Connecting to Airport Express via Ethernet Cable

Dear Apple Support Community,
My setup at home is such that all my devices are in such close proximity to the Airport Express, and therefore I connect everything to the Airport Express via ethernet cables (NAS, Apple TV, PS 3).
The final step in my network setup would be to connect my Macbook to the Airport Express to connect to the internet using the Ethernet Cables, instead of using the wireless connection - because my Macbook is positioned right next to the Airport Express.
However, I am struggling to get the Macbook to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet Cable through the airport express. Is there a special way to set this up if this can be done. I know Wireless would be the answer, but the problem is, when I download movies etc, I write the files directly onto the NAS which happens a lot quicker than doing so via WiFi.
I hope the above question makes sense.

AirPort Express via ethernet cable/Wireless.

I have an iMac upstairs, and want to stream music to my HI-Fi downstairs. My new AirPort Express has a green light and is found via Airport Utility on the iMac when connected to my modem (BT HomeHub, downstairs)) via ethernet cable. But once unplugged from the modem so I can use it near the Hi-Fi it is not found via wireless, and has a flashing amber light. I only want to stream music from iMac to Hi-Fi. I set it up to join the existing network - the guy in the Apple store assured me I didn't need to be connected by ethernet to the modem, that it would work via WiFi. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks to edex67 for providing the info that the Home Hub will work with WPA/WPA2 Personal security.
Please locate the Express temporarily in the same room or an adjacent room as the Home Hub.
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express to get everything back to a known state as follows:
Pull the Express from power
Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Express
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and make sure that you are connected to Apple Network xxxxxx. No password is required.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6
Click on the AirPort Express and then click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a device name to the Express, device password, and adjust Time Zone Settings. The settings should look like this:
Next, click the Wireless tab located next to the Base Station tab. Adjust settings as follows:
Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network (You might have to hold down the option key on the Mac while you click on the selection box to see the "Join" setting appear)
Wireless Network Name = Name of the Home Hub Network
Enter a check mark next to Allow Ethernet Clients if you want to enable the Ethernet port
Wireless Security = WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = Home Hub wireless network password
Verify Password
Click the Update button at the lower right
Close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the configuration has been stored on the Express
Wait 45-60 seconds for a green light
Move the Express to the desired location and power it back up, connect speakers, etc.

Cannot configure Airport Express via ethernet cable

I am trying to configure my new Airport Express, in order to stream music to it.
I have a wireless switch/router (Linksys), but DHCP is disabled.
My mac has no wireless card, it is connected via cable, on 100Mbps port.
A friend advised me to connect the AE directly via Ethernet cable, in order to first configure it.
I connected the AE to the router, and the Mac (in the Airport Setup wizard) tells me that "No airport card is installed" (correct). I then click on "Continue", and I can choose between "Configure a new Airport station" and "Modify...".
If I select "Configure...". I get the following message (I am translating from french): The Wizard detected a new Airport Express called "Base Station 5f6281". Good!
But If I click "Continue", it will report "An orror occured when contacting the selected Airport station".
What should I do?
If, instead of selecting "Configure..", I try to "Modify an existing configuration", I have the same when I then click on "identify". What is the trick?

Notes:
1. You MUST re-enable DHCP on your router. If you don't, the Airport Express won't be able to get an IP address. If your Airport Express doesn't get an IP address, your Mac won't be able to communicate with it.
2. When configuring via an ethernet connection, you must use the Airport Admin Utility (David's article tells you this as well). The Airport Setup Assistant can only be used if you are going to do the configuration wirelessly from an Airport card equipped Mac.

Aiport Extreme and Airport Express are not working together with DSL

My 2wire modem failed and I have replaced it with a basic actiontec dsl modem. I have my airport extreme connected to the actiontec via ethenet cable. All is working. Internet access through the actiontec is working and internet access through the extreme is working. What I cannot for the life of me remember how to do is get my express to work as a range extender for airport extreme.
The extreme is set up in Ethernet not PPPoE mode which might be the issue, but I can't remember the right settings (IP ranges, etc) if I set it up in PPPoE mode.
Net - my network that was working DSL modem to Extreme to Express as a range extender no longer works at the Express end. And don't even get me started about AT&T tech support. Help smart guys/girls out there - I know this is something simple that I should have written down when I first set up my network...

Check the location of the AP-Extreme.
It should NOT be placed: On the floor, in a corner, behind furniture, near metal objects, life high voltage wire or cordless phone bases.
It should be placed: As high as possible (up on a shelf or ceiling mounted) with a maximum line of sight to all stations, even thru walls.
If your home situation allows that, try to use the 5GHz band only. If you own a iPhone this must use the 2.4GHz radio.

Airport Extreme and Airport Express on Ethernet Wired Network

I recently did work on my house and now have the house hard-wired for ethernet. I have an AirPort Extreme in my home office. That signal does not reach past the old part of the house (brick apparently blocks some of the signal). So I want to use my Airport Express in the new part of the house to have wireless in the new part as well.
Currently, I have the Airport Extreme plugged into the network, with the Airport Express plugged into the network in the new room. I get wireless connection in the office, but not in the new room.
I am not sure how to configure the base stations.
-- Do I need to use WDS? I am not currently, because each wireless router has its own independent wired link to the network.
-- Do I need to call the wireless networks by different names? Currently I have them both called the same thing.
-- Do I need to set the Airports for a different channel? Currently I have one on 10 and one on 11.
This should be very simple. Unfortunately, my experience has been that the Express base station is very difficult to configure, very quirky and not for the average user.
BTW, the Express is hooked up to the stereo and iTunes plays through that-- but remember it is a hard wired connection. Also both Airports show up in the Admin Utility, so no problem there.

If not:
Connecting them together via Ethernet should be done like this:
Internet -> [WAN] AEBS [LAN] --> AirPort Express
The AirPort Express should so that the option to distribute IP addresses is disabled. The AEBS and Express should have the same network name and encryption configuration. The AEBS and Express should be on different channels.
This configuration will put all the computers on the same subnet. All of the computers will get IP addresses from the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
OR connecting them via wireless should be done through WDS. The hardware connection should be done like this:
Internet -> [WAN] AEBS
The AirPort Express should not be connected to Ethernet.
See KB 107454, AirPort Extreme and Express: Using WDS to create a network from multiple base stations.

Attempting to connect Win7 machine to Airport Express via ethernet

I have two Airport Express stations, one serving as a base station connected to my cable modem and the other at the other end of the house set to join the wireless network. The second unit is also set to allow ethernet clients.
I am attempting to connect a Compaq PC running Windows 7 Home Edition to my network via ethernet connected to the 2nd AE station. The connection is live, as I have successfuly connected my MacBook Pro to it (with Airport turned off).
The PC does not recognize my network at all, or even that there is a signal coming in. The diagnostics it runs tells me that a) something must be wrong with my ethernet cable (nope, it works on my MacBook) or b) the port on the computer must be defective (it worked on another network, directly connected to a cable modem, as recently as 4 days ago). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

According to your post you have confirmed that you have a good ethernet connection at the port of the Express.
There is really nothing more that can be accomplished by the Apple AirPort connection sequence here. Suggest that you post in an appropriate Win7 forum to explain that you have confirmed that you have a good ethernet connection, but the Win 7 machine will not connect.
Alternately, you could try a post in the AirPort for Windows Forum.

Connect iMac to Airport Express via ethernet cable?

I get poor performance using AirPlay to connect to my stereo with the Airport Express on the wireless network in my apartment building. The wireless router is on a different floor, and on the opposite side of the building, which I believe is the cause of the intermittent signal -- the music cuts out and back in constantly.
However, my workstation is very near the stereo, so I think I should be able to run an ethernet cable directly from my iMac to the Express. How do I set this up, though?

Yes, it will.
You also have the option of (a) completely turning off the radio on the Airport Express or (b) leaving it on, and using it to create a b/g point of access to your LAN thus allowing you to run the AEBSn in n-only mode for your n-capable wireless clients.

Connecting Two Airport Express Via Ethernet

I have a unique situation in which I would like to connect two airport express via ethernet. Here is the situation: I can connect the first AX directly to the internet and set up a WDS for the second AX. Unfortunately, the second AX signal does not reach where I need it to go. I can run an ethernet cable between the two. Is this setting valid for a WDS? Or does the WDS have to be wireless? If I can set up the WDS using an ethernet, will the relay AX broadcast the internet wirelessly then?
Are there any specific settings I should know about?

Yes that will work.
My understanding was that the older basestation could not do this?
I think you have it confused with extending a network wirelessly. That is not possible with the snow AirPort base station (ABS).

HT4628 Intermittent reception when streaming music via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. Is this a problem with the Extreme?

i get intermittent reception when I stream music from I Tunes via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. I Tunes continues to play uninterupted on the Mac. The problem does not lie with the Express as it occurs on both of my 2 Express at the same time. is this a problem with the Extreme?

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
Anyone's got anything to add?

Airport Extreme and Airport Express conflict and failure

I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Apple and still could not get my Airport Extreme and Airport Express to function. My Apple TV failed as well:
* Connected AEX through Airport Utility to internet. Airport Utility replaced my old configuration on my LinkSystem router. Green light.
* Checked Apple TV. No connection available. Unplugged cable modem, waited 1 minute and tried again. Apple TV connected. No problem.
* Flashing amber light on Airport Express for Airtunes. Does not show up in wireless device list. I call Apple.
* Reset Express. Still no signal. Connect via Ethernet cable. Reconfigure. Green Light. Music works.
* Check internet connection, in order. Apple TV fails. No connection to server.
* Apple TV reset. No connection. No wireless network found.
* Reset Airport Express. Reconfigure channel specifications. No connection with ATV or Airport Express.
* Disconnect Airport Express. Reconfigure. With ATV disconnected I get Airport Express back. Green light but this time no music. Remote speakers appear on itunes, but no music is transmitted.
* Did a total wireless reset on Extreme, and now both Express and ATV are not working.
Frustrated and dissapointed I disconnected everything put back my 5 year old Linksys router and within 15 seconds both ATV and Airport Express worked flawlessly.
How can this happen? What is wrong with this device? It is my second one in a week. The first one made no wireless connection to my Mac at all.
After sulking for hours I tried again, this time leaving the Express out of the equation and reconfiguring the ATV to take over airtunes. After a reset it did fine. Now I have a pure n signal running at 5hz. ATV works again. So does internet.
Any suggestions? Is there something I did not try?
I tried the Firewall trick, the accept all incoming connections trick, the disabling of the iv6 trick, the join a wireless connection trick, and everything else Apple Care could think of.

Maybe I was not clear enough on my post and configurations,
I had a Linksys before I purchased the airport extreme. My airport express joined the Linksys network for the purpose of airtunes. This worked flawlessly from day one.
Airport Extreme asked in the utility to take over an existing network or replace a router. If you chose this option it adopts all passwords, wpa/2 configurations for security and such.
I chose this option thinking that since it is an apple product it would take over everything and work. My airport express had origianlly been set to join my old Linksys network. Since the airport extreme took over this configuration it should work.
Apple stated many times that there seemed to be a conflict and kept asking me about the placement of my airport extreme.
My Linksys was never part of a bridge or a network within a network. It was removed before the Extreme was ever turned on.
After all the problems and hours of trying with Apple, i find it funny that all I had to do to restore eveything was plug my old Linksys back in and conect all the cables, and bam....it worked.
So what is wrong with the airport extreme, or is there something wrong with itunes 8 and its interface with the express? For whatever reason the extreme cannot make the express and my ATV work at the same time.
