Connecting AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express

Hi, I have a windows 7 pc connected to the internet with a dsl modem/router (technicolor TG587n v3 made by Thomson) and a Mac computer that gets connected wirelessly, but now I have purchased an AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express and I want to connect the new AirPorts to provide a more stable connection and also to extend the wifi signal and connect a non wifi USB printer to be accessible by the other computers in the household. Would it be possible for someone to spell out all of the steps to be taken to achieve this? Many thanks

No worries. It was all to do with the sequence of events which happened as follows (bear in mind that I'm not a technical person). First of all I've left the original moden/router's connection as it was, then I connected the Airport Extreme to the original modem with an ethernet cable. After this I started Airport Utility and I chose to do a manual setup until it recognised the Extreme, once this was done I plugged the Express to a power point, then Airport Utility recognised the Express and once again I did a manual setup and voila!
The above steps are only a summary of what took place as I did get a little bit confused as the first person that attended to my enquiry was not an expert with creating networks. The second person was amazing knowledgeable.

How to Set Up Time Capsule With Airport Extreme and Airport Express

Just got a new 1TB Time Capsule. I want it to be the main base station for my network. I already have a network set up with an older Airport Extreme base station and an Airport Express to extend it. I am thinking that rather than setting up the Time Capsule to "join" the old network, the best approach is to disconnect the Airport Extreme and Airport Express and reset them. Then set up the Time Capsule as a brand new network and bring the reset Aiport Extreme and Express onto the new network as if my original network never existed.
Is that the right approach or am I complicating it? Can I just join the Time Capsule to the existing network and still make it the main base station for the network?

I'd first use AirPort Utility to "Save a Copy As" of your AirPort Extreme settings. Then disconnect it, connect the Time Capsule in its place, and use AirPort Utility's "Import" function to read those settings. (Both of those functions are under AirPort Utility's "File" menu.) You may have to adjust a few settings. Once you have the Time Capsule working as you want, you can reconfigure your AirPort Extreme unit as you wish.

Airport Extreme and Airport Express conflict and failure

I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Apple and still could not get my Airport Extreme and Airport Express to function. My Apple TV failed as well:
* Connected AEX through Airport Utility to internet. Airport Utility replaced my old configuration on my LinkSystem router. Green light.
* Checked Apple TV. No connection available. Unplugged cable modem, waited 1 minute and tried again. Apple TV connected. No problem.
* Flashing amber light on Airport Express for Airtunes. Does not show up in wireless device list. I call Apple.
* Reset Express. Still no signal. Connect via Ethernet cable. Reconfigure. Green Light. Music works.
* Check internet connection, in order. Apple TV fails. No connection to server.
* Apple TV reset. No connection. No wireless network found.
* Reset Airport Express. Reconfigure channel specifications. No connection with ATV or Airport Express.
* Disconnect Airport Express. Reconfigure. With ATV disconnected I get Airport Express back. Green light but this time no music. Remote speakers appear on itunes, but no music is transmitted.
* Did a total wireless reset on Extreme, and now both Express and ATV are not working.
Frustrated and dissapointed I disconnected everything put back my 5 year old Linksys router and within 15 seconds both ATV and Airport Express worked flawlessly.
How can this happen? What is wrong with this device? It is my second one in a week. The first one made no wireless connection to my Mac at all.
After sulking for hours I tried again, this time leaving the Express out of the equation and reconfiguring the ATV to take over airtunes. After a reset it did fine. Now I have a pure n signal running at 5hz. ATV works again. So does internet.
Any suggestions? Is there something I did not try?
I tried the Firewall trick, the accept all incoming connections trick, the disabling of the iv6 trick, the join a wireless connection trick, and everything else Apple Care could think of.

Maybe I was not clear enough on my post and configurations,
I had a Linksys before I purchased the airport extreme. My airport express joined the Linksys network for the purpose of airtunes. This worked flawlessly from day one.
Airport Extreme asked in the utility to take over an existing network or replace a router. If you chose this option it adopts all passwords, wpa/2 configurations for security and such.
I chose this option thinking that since it is an apple product it would take over everything and work. My airport express had origianlly been set to join my old Linksys network. Since the airport extreme took over this configuration it should work.
Apple stated many times that there seemed to be a conflict and kept asking me about the placement of my airport extreme.
My Linksys was never part of a bridge or a network within a network. It was removed before the Extreme was ever turned on.
After all the problems and hours of trying with Apple, i find it funny that all I had to do to restore eveything was plug my old Linksys back in and conect all the cables, and bam....it worked.
So what is wrong with the airport extreme, or is there something wrong with itunes 8 and its interface with the express? For whatever reason the extreme cannot make the express and my ATV work at the same time.

Difference between Airport Extreme and Airport Express

What is the difference between Airport Extreme and Airport Express? My son is home from college and would like to use his Macbook for an online class. So I need a wireless router and I would also like to be able to play our iTunes over multiple speaker locations with my home stereo. Which one of these could accomplish this. Thanks in advance.

If you can use just one device to both set up a WiFi network and connect to your stereo you have to use an Airport Express. If you have to use separate devices, for instance because your internet connection device and your stereo are not in the same location, you have to use an Express to stream to and you can use either an Express or an Extreme to set up the WiFi.
By the way you have to use an Express for each stereo you would like to connect.

Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

When all configured to provide wireless the network (Wired/Wireless) become unstable and very slow. When I disable wireless on the Airport Express the problem disappears. The problem effects all endpoint clients (iPhones, iPads, Mac's and windows) Any ideas?

Don't do that. Decide which one of your AirPort Base Stations is to serve as your router. Connect that one, and no others, to the modem. Connect all the others to it, and configure them as bridges.

i get intermittent reception when I stream music from I Tunes via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. I Tunes continues to play uninterupted on the Mac. The problem does not lie with the Express as it occurs on both of my 2 Express at the same time. is this a problem with the Extreme?

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
Anyone's got anything to add?

Is it possible to connect an airport extreme to an airport express via ethernet cable, I ask because I want to expand the range of my wifi network to the basement of my house, the floors are really thick concrete so I installed some ethernet cable runs, I hope somebody can help me, thank you.

Yes, this is exactly correct.
To configure each AirPort Express (AX)
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name your device, assign a device password and adjust time zone settings. Give each Express a separate name so you can identify then easily.
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode...Create a Wireless Network
Wireless Network Name...Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) if you want to use 2.4 GHz
Channel...Automatic
Wireless Security...Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password....Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Click the Internet icon
Change the Connection Sharing setting at the bottom to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the AirPort Express will restart in 20-30 seconds
I think it is easier to configure each AirPort Express with AirPort Utility by temporarily connecting it to your computer with a short ethernet cable. Once you have saved the configuration, you can move the Express to the location that you need.
Please post back on your progress.

Using a current Time Capsule with Airport Extreme and Airport Express Older generation

I am looking to achieve a fast local network that allows streaming of music and video. I have bought a Time Capsule to replace the Telstra router (Thomson Router) by linking it using ethernet cable and then set up a network that also uses and older airport extreme and express router (g standard).
It would appear that the local network speed is slow - how can I assess the connection speed in the local network - both wireless and for ethernet? I believe that there is a speed indication on my two older macs running OSX 10.5 but not in OSX 10.6. Is there a tool to assess the local network speed?
The current set up works less well than previously only using the Thomson router, so the initial results are very disappointing. Not even streaming music seems to work and it stutters to halt.
I had expected that the dual band functionality would allow fast local connections where needed. What do I need to change?

Hi Bob,
The two old airports (extreme and express) are connected wirelessly to the time capsule base station with the following use:
- round extreme base station supports a printer only - remote WDS indicated in set up
- airport express supports remote speakers - set up does not indicate WDS status
I noticed in another note to provide a second network name to 5GHz network and connect the modern computers, ipad (seems to be able to connect) and apple tv to the 5 GHz network, leaving the other on the separate network. Also the two computers, apart from the laptops are connected via ethernet to use the GB ethernet, but I am not sure whether that speed is achieved or whether a firewire connection between the two would be better. use examples are:
1. Wirelessly I am trying to use three speakers - computer, apple tv and express - to have to listen to the same music in three rooms.
2. Over ethernet, I am using the the powermac as a file server to mac mini, but would like to be bale to access photo libraries (both Iphoto and Aperture) ideally over the network. It works well with starting the powermac in target disk mode but seems slow over what should be a very fast ethernet network.
The connection with the service providers router and time capsule is bridged - seems to be the only way of providing internet access - however, it also seems to allow for shared devices to be visible across the two time capsule and the Thomson network.
Obviously, this will need some more experimentation but any input would be appreciated.

My devices not automatically switching between Airport Extreme and Airport Express in extended network

I have setup an extended network in my home using an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express. The Extreme is connected directly to the FiOS modem and the Express is being used as the extender. The nework is setup fine, but my devices (MBA, iPhone, iPad) are not switching base stations when the signal becomes poor on the one it's connected to. For example, I am upstairs with my MBA and a great signal as I am connected to the Express. When I move downstairs to where the Extreme is setup, the Wi-Fi connection becomes poor even though I am litterally sitting next to the Extreme. To force it to connect to the Extreme, I need to shutoff the Wi-Fi on the MBA and turn back on. At this point, the MBA will connect to the Extreme with a excellent signal.
Any thoughts on why the MBA is not automatically switching?

The first troubleshooting step for any kind of network "issue" is a complete power cycle of the network. This gives everything a "fresh start" with new connections.
Power off the entire network.....all devices....in any order you want
Wait a minute or two
Start the modem/router first, and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next and let it run a full minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until the entire network is back up
Check the network again with the MBA and report on your results
Do not worry about the iPhone and iPad....they are pretty much hopeless as far as automatically switching from one access point to another....but the MBA should if it is working correctly.

Some basic question of Airport Extreme and Airport Express

As I know, my G4PB is installed Airport Extreme and it seems like working wireless Internet connection during travel. But which case do I need additional things like Airport Express (if I undestand this wireless technology correctly)?

If you wish to surf the Internet when you're out and about then you can just walk in to Starbucks, for example, and log-in - you already have all that is required.
If you want to use the Internet wirelessly at home then the Apple Extreme Base Station, an Airport Express or much cheaper 3rd party gear can help (although some additional hardware may be required dependimg on how you connect to the Internet).
If you want to surf wirelessly, stream music from iTunes to your home Hi-Fi and use a USB printer wirelessly then the Airport Express is the puppy.
If you need to share an Internet connection as well as a network with many wired and wireless users then the Airport Extreme Base Station could help.
Try reading the Airport Page to consolidate your ideas of what you want to achieve, or use this home networking wizard.
Either way you should be aware that you don't have a Powerbook Titanium (On a Ti the ports are tidy on the back under a neat cover and it has a slim 1" thin design) but rather you have a PB Aluminium (ports scattered on either side and it's approx 1.25" thick!)

Speed issue with WDS, Airport Extreme, and Airport Express 802.11n

I have a Airport network set up using WDS and two airport base stations: an Airport Extreme 802.11n, and an Airport Express 802.11n. The Extreme is configured to be WDS main and is connected to my cable modem and other computers, while the express is WDS relay and acts as a switch.
I don't actually have any wireless clients connecting to the express. I'm using it to connect a mac with no airport card to the network by plugging it into the ethernet port on the express. For the most part, it works, and the mac gets a network address and can access the network. However, the connection speed from the Express to the Extreme seems slower than it should be.
Since both are 802.11n, and the Mac is plugged into the Express's 10/100 ethernet port, I figure the theoretical top speed that the Mac should be able to communicate with another device plugged into the Extreme is at around the same speeds as 100 mbps ethernet, since the 100 mbps ethernet connection should be the bottleneck in this case. In reality, the speeds are much slower: when I transfer files between a machine connected to the extreme (via ethernet) and my mac, the speed tops out at about 2 megabytes a second, if that.
I looked in the Airport Extreme's logs, and it indicates that the Express is only connected at 54 mbps, as though it were a 802.11g Express. I have no idea why this is! Also, the only wireless communication is between the Extreme and the Express, so one wireless device acting as a relay for another (and thus cutting the throughput in half) shouldn't be an issue.
Does anyone know why the speeds are so slow, and if there's anything I can do to improve them?

I looked in the Airport Extreme's logs, and it indicates that the Express is only connected at 54 mbps, as though it were a 802.11g Express. I have no idea why this is!
That is because you established a WDS which only runs in 802.11g. Since you have two 802.11n base station, you would want to take advantage of the "Extend a network" feature available with these base stations.
Here's a typical setup:
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

Airport Extreme and Airport Express used as two routers

Hi,
Is it possible to use Aiport Extreme as an 802.11n router only for 802.11n devices and then plug the Airport Express to the Airport Extreme so as to use the Airport Express as a second router to have 802.11b/g devices wirelessly connect to it?
I want to do this so that my MacBook, which is 802.11n, can connect at full speed to the Airport Extreme and so that my iPhone, which is 802.11g, can connect to the Airport Express. Doing it this way would allow the Extreme to remain at full speed instead of dropping to 802.11g whenever the iPhone connects to it wirelessly. Please let me know if this can be done and if so, how.

Hi everyone.
The answer was right before my eyes all along. All I had to do was wait for the AEP to show up on Airport utility. I then told Airport Utility that the AEP was connected to Internet by Ethernet and assigned it a different range of DHCP numbers.
I then setup the wireless on the Airport Extreme as 2.5Ghz 802.11n and gave both Airports unique network names. Now when I connect my Macbook to the Airport Extreme, it connects at 802.11n and when I connect my iPhone to the Airport Express it doesn't slow down my MacBooks connection down to 802.11g. I confirmed this by trying out both wireless connections and transferring a 250mb file from my MacPro which is connected to the Airport Extreme via Ethernet. This was taking a minute or less. When I tried transferring the same file but using the wireless connection with my Airport Express, the time was more like 4 to 5 minutes.

Airport Extreme and Airport Express Names...

I'm a complete thicky when it comes to this. All I know is that I have an airport extreme and express stations (working fine, green lights on!), and my MacBook Pro, although showing a full-strength Airport signal, simply can't seem (usually) to connect to the Internet, even when it's within a few feet of the stations. My specific question is this: Does it matter that ("Apple Network 2C0f2') (not it's real name, but like it) is completely different to my Express Base Station number (01c729). Or should they be the same?
Any hints would be welcome, this network really is practically useless.

OK, let's simplify things first. Turn the AirPort Express off for now so we can get your AirPort Extreme working on wireless.
Open AirPort Utility again, Manual Setup. Click on the Wireless Tab just below the row of icons at the top of the pane. Its' in a row of items that reads something like Summary - Base Station - Wireless - Access.
Wireless Mode: select create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name: Your name for your wireless network
For now....no check mark next to allow this network to be extended. (We will later change this)
Radio Mode 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible
Channel: Automatic
Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Pasword: Your wireless password (write this down)
Wireless Password: "
Put a check mark next to Remember this password in my keychain
Now click Update in the lower right corner of the pane. The Extreme will restart after 20-30 seconds.
Now you can check on your computer. Click the Airport icon and the name of your network should appear. Select it. You may be asked for your password.
If it shows that you are connected via wireless, disconnect the ethernet cable at your computer. Make sure your wireless connection is still working.
