Connecting Airport Extreme to other routers

Hello,
I'm currently running on a ADSL connected to a Linksys router, and i have my gaming consols + wirless devises connected to it and everything works just fine.
Whats the added value to purchase an Airport Extreme? Will i gain more speed or any other thing? How easy it is to connect my Linksys router to the Airport Extreme?
Help please.

The AirPort Extreme will not provide any faster Internet connection than your current setup. So, if that is the question that you are asking, then an AirPort Extreme will be of no benefit to you.
If you are asking about a feature that your current setup does not provide, which the AirPort Extreme might......what feature might that be?

  • Latest generation Airport Extreme v. other routers, e.g. Netgear AC 1750

Hi, I'm looking for a new WiFi router to go with my Macbook Pro 13" retina.  Thoughts about the router with the greatest distance and speed (and without using a repeater)?  How does the new Airport Extreme that was just announced compare with other non-Apple routers, such as the Netgear AC 1750.
Specifically, I'm connecting to a NAS via WiFi, and I notice that the data speeds drop four fold as I go to the other end of our (modestly-sized) house.  For routine browsing, I imagine that the speed isn't as critical, but I would like to take be able to take full advantage of the NAS with moving files around, etc.

    pocster, welcome to the discussions!
"But the thing is, my desk/work area is virtually right below the room where the AEBS is situated."
Wireless signals don't move through walls and obstructions very well and it sounds like your desk area is in a "dead spot" within your network. I think there is some evidence to suggest that 802.11g works better in situations similar to yours because the signal seems to saturate an area more effectively. There are always compromises and one of the compromises with "n" is that while it is faster, the signal is not as robust in some situations.
You might try the "802.11g only" mode as a test on your Extreme to see if that might be the case. If the 802.11g setting does not appear in Radio Mode when you are using Airport Utility, hold down the "option" key when you click on the drop down box to make your selection.
This might also be a perfect application for an AirPort Express which can "extend" the signal created by the Extreme. Ideally, the Express would be located at a point where it would have line of sight or few obstructions between both the Extreme and your desk area.

  • Using TImed Access mode on Airport Extreme with other routers in bridge mode. Not working as expected.

I am trying to setup timed access mode on my airport extreme in order to limit the times devices can connect to my network, but I am having some trouble.
My setup is as follows  Cable Modem ---> Airport Extreme ---> Netgear router
The Airport is running DHCP and the Netgear is in bridge mode. The only purpose of the Netgear is to provide a wireless access point for older b/g wifi devices. The Netgear is connected to the Airport by an ethernet cable from one of its LAN ports. All ip addresses are supplied by the Airport.
When I list a device mac number in the Airport extreme's timed access table it does seem to block the device if the device trys to connect to the airport's wireless service, but the device is still able to obtain service through the Netgear wireless service. I want the device to be blocked on both wireless networks. I thought this would work since all DHCP is on the airport. Why is the Airport allowing the device to connect when it comes in through the Netgear?
In this example the device I am trying to block is 5c:59:48:ba:28:d2.
Looking at the log on the airport I see the following entry when the device (when permitted) connects to the airport wireless
    Nov 30 22:43:12
    Severity:5
    Associated with station 5c:59:48:ba:28:d2
If instead the device connects to the Netgear wireless I see the following log entry on the airport (this connection gets through even if the mac address above is listed as blocked on the airport)
    Dec 01 10:46:29
    Severity:5
    Connection accepted from [fe80::223:12ff:fe29:acfe%bridge0]:54774.
It appears that the Netgear router (while bridging the network) is somehow modifying the mac address format in a way that the airport does not recognise it as the device to block.
What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks.

The Netgear wireless server has control over what what devices are allowed to connect.
Unless you tell the Netgear what devices you want to allow to connect, it will allow any wireless device to connect as long as it knows the wireless network password.
IF.... .you were using two AirPort Extremes, and not a Netgear, the two Extremes would communicate to each other....so you would only have to enter Timed Access settings on one router and other AirPort would automatically pick those settings up.
But, even this was not the case until the last year or so when Apple updated firmware.  A few years ago, you might have had 2 Apple AirPort Extremes on the network, but you still had to manually set up Timed Access on both devices separately.
Bottom line, you need to setup the equivalent of Timed Access on the Netgear router.

  • How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows

How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows?

First the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) cannot share out an external HDD attached to its USB port unless it is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. It will not work if the HDD is formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT.
If the HDD is formatted properly, when you access the AEBS with the AirPort Utility, does the HDD show up properly on the Disks tab of the utility?
If it does, then you would access the HDD as any other network share, using the following format: //servername/sharename. In the case of the AirPort Disk (a HDD attached to the USB port of either an Extreme or Time Capsule), the "servername" would be the Extreme's Base Station Name, and the "sharename" would be the volumename of the HDD.

  • Connect AirPort Extreme Base Station to air card

How do you connect AirPort Extreme Base Station to Verizon Air Card?

Sorry, but the Air Card cannot be used with the USB port on the AirPort Extreme because that port will only work with a hard drive and/or a printer.
Suggest that you check with Verizon to see if they have an adapter or wireless router for the Air Card that will provide an Ethernet signal to the AirPort Extreme.

Airport Extreme will work as a wireless router supporting upto 50 systems including Mac computers, PCs, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and virtually all 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless devices — all at the same time.

How do I connect airport extreme to older speakers which are connected to older receiver amp? Do I need USB to radio jack? Have Itunes on IMAC , os 10.4.11. I know I need to update os sy to 10.5. I have new Iphone. I want to use remote app to send music to speakers.

There is not an audio port on the AirPort Extreme, so it cannot be used to stream audio per your question.
An AirPort Express will do the job.

  • Wifi connection AirPort Extreme with IP-camera

I can't establish wifi connection Airport Extreme with IP-camera. At the same time cable connection is fine, but wifi not.
    Please, give me an advise.

You need to create a wireless network on the AirPort Extreme, and then you probably will want to assign a compatible static LAN IP address to the camera so that you can port-forward from the router to the camera.

BUT I also want to be able to use the LAN ports on the Airport Extree that is NOT connected to the DSL router in order to service devices tht only have a fixed LAN connection- Is this possible ???
Yes, assuming that you are using newer versions of the AirPort Extreme, the "remote" Extreme would be configured to "Extend a wireless network". The Ethernet ports are enabled when the device is configured this way.
Keep in mind that this will not be the same type of Ethernet connection that you would have it you connected to the "main" AirPort Extreme. The signal at the Ethernet port on the "remote" Extreme will only be as good as the quality of the wireless connection allows between the two AirPort Extremes.

  • Connect Airport Extreme to existing router without ethernet cable

I am looking to connect my Airport Extreme to an existing router without the use of the ethernet cable.  The existing router is on the ground floor whilst I would like to install the Airport Extreme in the first floor to improve WiFi range on the 1st floor.  I am able to connect Airport Extreme to the router with the ethernet cable (in which case both the devices have to be close to one another on the ground floor) but unable to get Airport Extreme set up without the ethernet cable.  Is it possible to connect Airport Extreme to the existing router on a non-wired basis (i.e. without the ethernet cable) and if yes, how would be I able to do it.  Any help would be appreciated.

The AirPort Extreme can connect wirelessly.....IF.....your existing router is also another Apple router.
Is that the case here?  If yes, what model number is your existing Apple router?
If no, you will need to continue to connect the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection.

  • Connecting airport extreme, netgear dsl modem, windows 7, and Macbook pro

I'm having a problem connecting my airport extreme to my netgear modem, windows 7 pc and my Macbook Pro.  Until a few days ago, I had a Westell wireless dsl modem and everything worked fine.  Now, the only way I can connect to the internet is through my desktop pc and the hardwired modem.

If your goal is to extend/boost the range of your Netgear router with either or both of the AirPorts, this will not work wirelessly ... at least, not completely by wireless. That is because, WDS is not standard and each manufacturer has had creative license to implement it as they see fit for their products.
Instead, you have at least two other choices to use the Netgear (as the main Internet router) with the AirPorts:
Connect one AirPort directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure both AirPorts for an extended wireless network. In this configuration, you would be running two separate wireless networks; one created by the Netgear, and the second the extended network created by the AirPorts.
Connect both AirPorts directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure all of the routers for a roaming network. In this configuration, there would be a "single" wireless network where wireless network clients can literally roam from one router to another and still be on the "same" wireless network.

  • Connecting AirPort Extreme

I just received my new AirPort Extreme and would like to know how to get it to work with my Verizon Fios router, replacing the WiFi function of the router with the AE. I have the Airport Utility installed on my pathetic Windows 8 PC and on my iPad Air. I got to the point of setting up the network using my iPad but cannot connect to the internet. I had the WAN O port on the AE connected to the WAN port on the VZ router. Should it have been connected to one of the multiple LAN ports on the VZ router? I understand that I have to set the AE to bridge mode but cannot get to that menu. I am not going to do anything more until I get some knowledgeable help so I don't screw anything up. I also know that I have to turn of the wifi on the VZ router. Any help with getting this thing up an running would be appreciated.

We can help on the setup of the AirPort Extreme, but Verizon uses a number of different modem/routers and the setup and configuration of each model will differ, so you will need to enlist the help of Verizon support to get the wireless function turned off on the Verizon router.
Please start over on the AirPort Extreme and disconnect any Ethernet cables that might be attached to the device, then perform a Hard Reset to clear out the old settings and get the product back to a known default condition.
To do that, power up the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the back of the devices for 8-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to slow, blinking amber light status.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the several LAN <--> ports on the Verizon router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme
On the iPad home screen......tap Settings....then tap WiFi
Tap on AirPort Extreme under the heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station
AirPort Utility will open and take a minute to analyze the setup, then suggest that the AirPort Extreme be configured to create a wireless network. You will see picture of the AirPort Extreme at this time....not an AirPort Express in the image posted below.
We will post a screenshot of the window that will appear at this time, but Apple has been having difficulty with screenshot attachments on their community support forums of late, so you may or may not see an image appear below:
For Network Name.......Enter a short, simple name of 8-12 characters or so that you want to call your AirPort Extreme wireless network
For Base Station.......Enter a short simple name that you want to call the AirPort Extreme
For Password.......Enter a password that will be used for both the wireless network and base station
For Verify.......Type in the password again
    Tap Next
The utility will set up everything for you and correctly assign the correct Bridge Mode settings to allow the AirPort Extreme to work with the Verizon router.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, tap Done.  That's it.
You should now be able to select the wireless network that you named and enter the password to connect.

  • Connecting Airport Extreme to wired Windows

I'm interested in getting the new Airport Extreme, but I was curious how it is for connecting to Windows via ethernet. I'm specifically talking about Windows 98. Is the Airport Extreme like any typical router when it comes to the ethernet connections?

    Hi nemesis_256,
The Airport works like most routers when sharing the Internet, in that it supplies an IP address to the wired and wireless clients dynamically. To configure the Airport you will need a Macintosh computer with OS 10.4.8 or later, or a windows machine with Windows XP service pack 2 or later.

  • NEED HELP! Connecting Airport Extreme wirelessly to an Xbox 360!

    Hi there,
I just purchased an Apple Airport Extreme 3 days ago and I can't get it to fully work with my XBox 360 with the official wirelessly networking adapter. I've spent the last 2 days trying every conceivable option and setup to get these devices to work.... but can't. When I turn on my Xbox it DOES connect to Xbox Live and the wireless network created by the airport. I do the "Test Xbox Live" thing, and everything comes back "Confirmed" or "Okay", I can search marketplace and download game demos and such. But whenever I go to play a game on Xbox Live it say it "can't connect to server" or "no games found" etc.... I've tried this with 4 games; Halo 3, Halo 2, Gears of War, and Call of Duty 3 - and I can't play on Xbox Live with any of them. They did work fine like 10 days ago on an old D-link router I had before it broke, but now I have NO IDEA what the ** is going on. I've tried everything - I've set the router to b/g only, turned off all security, manually set the IP address on the xbox, etc... and I still can't play any games on live. I know my Xbox live subscription is still good and I've downloaded all the latest updates and firmware for my Xbox, router, and computer - and still nothing works. So any help out there would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    John

Hello John Groshko. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, the AirPorts are not listed as Xbox Live-compatible routers.
The following web blog does a great job explaining the NAT issues with Xbox Live. Basically what it comes down to is that although you can get an Internet connection for the Xbox or Xbox 360 with the AirPorts, you may not get the necessary NAT setting (Moderate or Open) for the Xbox Live game that you want to play.
