Connecting Airport to Existing Wireless Router

This is driving me mad.....
I have a wireless router from my ISP and I can connect to the internet wirelessly with Vista PC, XP PC, iPad and my MacBook Air. I got an airport so I can plug it into a printer and my stereo. When I try to setup the airport to join my existing network it goes off to reset then disapears from the airport utility then is no longer visible when I select my network back to the existing wireless network. I've tried everything and must have et it back to factory default a 100 times. On the last go my wireless network completly stopped working. This should be simple right ?
The router is using WEP, password is correct, etc. Can I not do what I want with this device and I need to connect it to the wireless router with a cable from the airport ethernet ?
Please help before I chuck the airport in the bin......

Hi, I've just setup today my AirPort Extreme Base Station. It was very easy to do. I read you have an AirPort Express, well I hope this will help you, if not contact me please, maybe we can solve the problem together.

I want to extend my existing wireless router by using the AirPort Express for my Smart TV.  Can I just plug in the AirPort halfway between the router and the Smart TV and have no direct connection to a computer or the TV, or do I need to plug in next to the TV and somehow connect the AirPort to the TV (ethernet)?

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • How to connect time capsule to existing wireless router

    Hi
I am struggling to set up my time capsule is it possible to connect it to my existing wireless router or does the time capsule have to replace it as I have tried to do that but I cannot get a connection or signal to the WAN port?
I have the set up instructions but its not helping I am a complete novice at this.
Any help or links much appreciated

    Yes you can.
Just plug the TC into one of the Ethernet ports on your router. WAN port on the TC.
Before you do that, set the TC up to be in 'bridge mode' in AirPort Utility.

  • HT1178 How do I set-up my Time Capsule to work with my existing Wireless Router?

The existing  wireless router is my connection to the Internet and I would like to keep it that way. I really want the TC to fuction as an external Hard Drive/Server, Backup Disc! The TC is where all my Music and Photos are located together with my Backups!
I have tried different configurations and I get it to work for a wile, but after a few minutes it will disappear from my Air Port Utility, a rescan will not bring it back, but if I unplug and then plug it back in it will reappear. However if the TC shows in Air Port Utility or not the TC still shows up on my Desktop.
What Settings should I use in Air Port Utility, Should the Ethernet Cable be plugged into Ethernet or LAN Port?
    My Current Settings are:
Ethernet Cable: Connected to the ETHERNET PORT
    AirPor Tab:
    Wireless Mode: OFF
    Connect Using: ETHERNET
    Internet Tab: Internet Connection
    Connect Using: ETHERNET
    Connection Sharing: OFF (BRIDGE MODE)
    TCP/IP:
    Configure IPv4: USING DHCP

    I am Running OS 10.5.8 on a PowerBook G4.
Below you will see the Log (IP Address, AirPort ID, Eternet ID, Subnet Mask, Router Address, DNS Server Info has been removed).
I had the TC was originally set-up connected to a DLS Modem, all worked fine Backups over TM all was ok, but then the Modem died. (I upgraded to a Wireless Router). I did have it set up, but I nolonger know the settings, I wanted to do a backup with TM, which had not been done for a long time (6 months)
I tried to backup, but either it was not working or was taking sooooo long, that I decided to do the Backup over Ethernet (still took the hole day for 8.5 GB). I had read that I nedded to chang my setting to be able to Backup with Ethernet. Did not Save the previous settings hence my problem!

  • Can't connect AE to existing wireless network

I can't get my AE to connect to my existing wireless network. I saw the other thread on this and followed those steps, but it didn't work. Here's what I did:
    1. Connected the AE to my D-Link DIR-655 wireless router via ethernet cable.
    2. Opened Airport Utility and established a connection to the AE.
    3. Renamed the AE and entered a password.
    4. In the "wireless" tab, I selected "join existing network", chose my wireless network, selected the security type (WPA Personal) and entered the password.
    5. In the "music" tab, I named the speakers and entered a password.
So far so good. I clicked "update" and the AE restarted. After a while I received an error message informing me that the base station could no longer be detected. According to the directions posted in the other thread, this is actually supposed to be a sign that the AE is now in client mode and all is well.
I unplugged the ethernet cable from the AE and router and then went to the other room. I plugged the AE into the speakers and then plugged the AE into the wall.
However, instead of a green light all I have is a flashing amber light, even after several minutes. No connection.
I reset the AE and repeated the steps above, to no avail. Still a flashing amber light.
    Any ideas?

I'm having a similar issue. My AE is connected directly to a Netgear WGR614v4 router, and I run through all the steps you mentioned. When I choose to update the settings to the AE, I get the same "error" you mentioned about the AE not being found, and I also took that as a sign that I'm in client mode. I moved the AE to the other room, connected my mini cable to the stereo, then plugged the AE back into the wall. The AE runs through its setup and eventually gets a solid green light, so I'm thinking all is well.
The problem is that I then log back into the AirPort Utility on my laptop and the AE is not shown in the top left like it should be. After doing a bit of reading, I've figured out that I can manually find it by going to File>Configure Other and entering the AE's IP address and password. Then I get a window showing the details of the AE, its name, network, encryption, etc. However, if I close this window, it still doesn't show up in the main AirPort Utility screen and I'm not sure how to configure it for AirTunes.
Hoping that's just a bug with the AirPort Utility software, I open up iTunes to see if I can locate it there. I know I should see a pulldown menu at the bottom of iTunes that gives me an option for AE as my audio output method, but the menu is not there. Now I'm completely stuck.
At this point I decide to start from scratch, so I do a Factory Default reset by pressing down the reset button on the AE as I plug it into the wall. Now it is supposedly reset, so I plug it back into my router, then it runs through a setup sequence and lights up solid green before I've even done anything. It shows up in AirPort Utility with a default base station ID, but my computer won't connect to it at all. I'm hoping I can try to reset it again this evening and at least get back to the normal setup screen, but I'm really not sure what I could do differently at this point.
This is frustrating and I'm on the verge of giving up, but I REALLY want this to work out.

  • Using Airport plus additional wireless router (help, possible?)

    Hi All,
I'm curious to know if I can connect to an additional wireless router while I am also connected to my AirPort Extreme.
I just moved into an apartment with an existing wireless internet connection and I currently can't replace my AirPort base station with their router that is provided by Verizon. I also have my own AirPort Extreme that I connect to in order to access an external hard drive wirelessly.
As of now I have been switching between the two of them, which, as you can imagine, can be quite inconvenient. So, I would like to use them at the same time, if that is possible.
Does anyone know if I can set this up and how I go about doing it?
    Thanks so much!

Unfortunately, unlike the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) cannot "Join an existing wireless network."
The only other option, would be to try to establish a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between the apartment's wireless router and the AEBSn ... but this would only work if that router is WDS-compatible. There are only a few that are.

  • Using Time Capsule with existing wireless router

I am thinking about getting a TC, but I wanted to know if the following configuration would work:
DSL modem to existing wireless B router. Then have the TC recieve internet from the existing wireless router.
Basically I want to put the old router in the basement where the only wiring is, but put the TC upstairs on my desk so I can connect the printer to it.
    Thanks!

Although, you can join an existing network using a Time Capsule as a wireless client, it’s recommended that the existing network is an 802.11n network.

  • My iPad will no longer connect to my Linksys wireless router.  Every other electronic device in our house connects just fine.  What can I do?

I have an iPad (the earliest version) that used to connect to my Linksys wireless router with no difficulty.  One night recently I could not get on the internet through my iPad.  I checked the Wi-Fi information, which said it was not connected. When I go through the process of choosing a network, on which my home system is clearly listed along with a very strong signal strength, I am told that my iPad is unable to join my own network.  All the other electronic devices in our house are connected and functioning fine.  Can anyone walk me through the steps to correct this problem?
I need to add that I took my iPad to the Appple store, and the clerk there reset something--I don't know what--and my iPad was able to connect to their network.  When I came home, though, I was not able to connect to my home network.

If everything else is connecting with no issues, I would go into the wifi setting on the iPad and redo the info there, user, password and anything else related to your wifi at your house.
It is possible whatever he reset may have reset something to default setting which will not allow it to connect. If you need too then verify the wifi setting by comparing it with another device setting that works on your home network.
    Good luck

  • Connect to Airport Express and Wireless Router (Linksys) at the same time?

I have a laptop that connects to a Linksys wireless G (WRT54G) router. I just got an Airport Express to play iTunes wirelessly over my stereo. Is there a way to connect to both the Linksys router and the Airport at the same time - i.e., connect to the internet as I was over the wireless router AND send music wirelessly from my laptop to my stereo using the Airport Express at the same time?

alphasonic, Welcome to the discussion area!
Is your "wireless router" an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or another AirPort Express (AX)? If not, you probably will not be able to do this.
The Ethernet port on the AX is active ONLY when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly connect to a network. Unfortunately most (nearly all) are NOT compatible with Apple's WDS and therefore this is not possible.

  • Setup of Airport with external wireless router?

I've had a Mac Mini since January, its connected via CAT5 to my wireless belkin ADSL router.
Can I buy an airport express and connect to it using my belkin router? The Mini has no wireless capacity, will the software scan the lan/wlan and realise the airport is available via the wired connection?
    Thanks

It sounds like you want to configure the Airport Express to wirelessly "join" the network created by your Belkin wireless router. Yes - this can be done with your existing setup. Just follow the instructions provided here by David Lovell, which work equally well with Mac and PC users:

  • Connecting eMac to Existing Wireless Network

Hi.  I recently was given an eMac to set up in our son's room and I would like to connect it to our existing wireless network rather than string ethernet through the walls.  I purchased an Airport Extreme card and connected it.  However, the eMac doesn't seem to recognize our wireless network no matter what I do.  I am not 100% sure that the card is even working properly, although I think I found it listed under "Network Utility".  Here are all of the specifics:
    eMac:  eMac G4/1.42 (2005) 1.42 GHz PowerPC 7447a (G4)
    OS:  Tiger
Airport Extreme wireless card (purchased aftermarket):  I believe that it appears under "Network Utility" as "Network Interface (en1)".  It has been assigned a hardware and IP address.  However, it shows a link status of "Inactive" and a link speed of "0 Mb".
Wireless router:  Linksys WRT54G that has successfully connected to several other PC and iOS devices (e.g. iPhones and iPads)
Thanks much for any troubleshooting ideas that you might be able to share.  I've been all over the Internet (on another workstation, of course!) looking for the answer and haven't found anything exactly on-point for my configuration.

First thing to do, you must activate the card in System Preferences.

  • Silly question, maybe. I want to change from Verizon DSL to cable, but cable company doesn't supply router.  can I use my Airport Extreme as wireless router?

We currently have the following wireless home-network configuration, powered by Verizon DSL.
    2 macbook pro’s
    1 emachine
    HP PhotoSmart 6122 all-in-one printer
    Apple TV
Apple Airport Extreme Base Port A 1408
    Westell 7500 router
Thinking I’d get wider wireless coverage throughout my 2 bedroom home, I purchased the Airport Extreme. It is connected to the router via its sole usb port.  The result was only a tiny increase in speed, and no increase in coverage, so I don’t know why I have it.
We now want to change from DSL to cable, thus ditching Verizon.  Our new cable provider supplies the cable box, but no router for wireless networking.
    Here are my questions.
Can I use the Airport Extreme (AE) as a wireless router?
If so, how should I hook it up?  Should the usb cable go from the AE to the cable box, and all the other devices connect wirelessly?
If not, how should I be using the AE to some advantage?  What can I get out of the investment?
Thank you very much for your help!  Beatriz

What I wrote has nothing to do with what the cable company charges for their installation. And, usually they will help with the router setup even if you supply your own router. I don't know what they will charge for the modem.
Note that you need to get just a modem. You don't want a modem/router combination. That will make using an AEBS effectively nearly impossible. You will need to ask specifically for just a standalone modem, and that you will supply your own router.

  • ? possible to connect AEBS to existing wireless internet connection

    Hi
I have a cable connection to a Netgear W614 wireless router and can connect to the internet wirelessly using my MBP.
What I would like to do is have an airport extreme in a separate room with a printer connected to it connected to the same wireless network. What I hope to do is be able to connect wirelessly to the internet through my Netgear ( as I have been doing) but have wireless access to the printer connected to the AEBS.
I seem to be able to see how to "set this up" if the AEBS is hardwire connected to the netgear ( and thus the internet) but this defeats the purpose for me as I want to have the Netgear and the AEBS in separate rooms. I cant seem to see how to get the AEBS to wirelessly connect to the network and share the printer and yet retain internet connection through the Netgear.
Is this setup possible e.g MBP connected to a wireless network which has a Netgear wireless router connected to the internet and a AEBS connected to a printer in diffrerent rooms?
    Cheers

Hello RichwhG. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To connect the AEBS to the Belkin, wirelessly, in order to extend the Belkin's wireless network, you would have to establish a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between the two.
Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS...so it very unlikely that your router can be extended wirelessly with the AEBS.
The few that are known to work are:
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54
The other option is to configure the AEBS as it's own wireless network to share the printer, but you would then have to switch wireless networks between Internet access or for printing.
