Connecting an airport to an existing wireless system

Hi,
I might be stupid... but I have been trying to connect my new Airport to my wireless network to be able to get the music on my desktop computer (the one that is plugged in to my modem and that has all my music). I connected my Wii to my wireless network today and that worked and my laptop connects to my wireless. I have installed the Remote application on my iPod touch.I have plugged the Airport in the wall and connected the Airport to my sound system. I have installed the Airport software. Then, instruction say that I should view the availabe wireless networks.I see the Apple wireless network, and mine on my laptop but not on my desktop where I installed the Airport software and I do not know what to do next... Can someone help? my

You only need to have AirPort Utility installed on one computer to be able to configure the AirPort Express.
Use the computer that has AirPort Utility installed and instead of trying to configure the Express using wireless, move the Express near the computer, power it up and temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the Express.
When you open AirPort Utility, you should see a screen that shows your Express on the left with a message on the right hand side that indicates that "AirPort Utility has found an AirPort Express with 802.11n"
Click Continue and follow the prompts to have the Express "join" your wireless network there.
When the AX is configured, you can disconnect the ethernet cable and move the Express to the location that you want.

  • Can't connect to the internet on a wireless system at school, but fine when I'm at home.

Can't connect to the internet on a wireless system at school, but fine when I'm at home. All semester, there was no problem getting on the wireless system at school.  I had a problem, put in my school log-in and password and saved it in keychain.  Since, that time I have been unable to connect to the wireless system at school.  I delete this action out of "Keychain" and went to "Preferences" and deleted the "Keychain" action, but today at school I couldn't log in.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  MacBook; OS 10.5.8

I think your best bet is to go to technical support at your school (hopefully you have one) and they will help you out. The only reason I can come up with as to why you are not getting wireless access is that your settings are wrong (need to turn airport on) or your computer is not registered into the university.
    Good luck.

  • Connecting a wrt54g to an existing wireless network

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to create a second wireless network by connecting a wrt54g to our existing wireless network?
Our main router is upstairs, connection in the downstairs office is terrible, plus it's being used by a team that would like their own network anyways. Can I plug the wrt54g into the main router, assign it a static external IP and create a second wireless network?
    thanks

great thread toomanydoughnuts, thanks!  all the hours I spend googling for an answer are such a waste when I can post a specific question and a human being answers me back  :-)
I see that what I was trying to do is possible but before I start let me ask your opinion.
My initial goal for a seperate network was to give Router 2 a static external IP and connect our server to router 2 so external users would always be able to access it at the same address in case Router 1 ever had an IP change (I don't have constant access to router 1 and am not supposed to be fiddling with it!)
The secondary goal was to improve the wireless signal for those of us downstairs and I figure having Router 2 down there would provide a nice strong signal.
I have realized now that dyndns can solve my issue with Router 1's IP changing (even if it's once a month it's an issue for remote users accessing our server). Dyndns will re-point our host name to the new IP if it ever changes.
But I still have the issue of a very weak signal in the downstairs office.
Because I'm seeking the simplest, easiest to manage solution as I'm far from a network guru, do you think a better option may be to get a repeater or something like that for our downstairs office to just boost the signal from Router 1? If so, any recommendations?
thanks in advance for your time
Oh, and if I did go the route of setting up Router 2, could I give Router 2 a static external IP address?

  • WRT54GC config to connect a wired-printer on existing wireless network

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me with the following issue :
    - I have an existing wireless network at home, set up with a wireless router/dsl connection
    - I now have been given a wired-printer, and I'd like to connect my printer to the existing wireless network, using a WRT54GC device.
I have been trying for a while, and I believe but can't manage to configure the device do this, and didn't find this in the forum yet.
As anyone already done this successfully ?
    Thank you

What is the make and model of your printer?  What type of connections does it have -- ethernet port?   USB port?  Parallel port?
If your printer has an ethernet port, you can wire it directly to your router.
If your printer has only a USB port, you will need a printer server such as the Linksys WPS54G, WPSM54G.    These devices will allow you to use the printer as a wired or wireless printer.  Both of these devices support USB 1.1 and USB 2.0
I do not recommend the Linksys PSUS4 (wired print server with 4 port switch), because it only supports USB 1.1

The ZyXEL P-2601HN-F1, as you know, is a combination DSL modem & 802.11n wireless router (or gateway device).
For your goal you will want to take a look at this Apple Support article for details on how to configure an AX for iTunes.
If you are still having difficulties with the AX joining the ZyXEL's wireless network, you can try the following:
    Temporarily disable wireless encryption.
If you are hidding the SSID, disable that feature.
Change the Mode Select setting to: 802.11g Only
Change the Channel Selection from "Auto" to a set channel, like 1, 6, or 11

  • How to Connect Airport Express to Existing Wireless Network (Client Mode)

I am posting this for everyone tearing their hair out trying to connect the Airport Express to your own existing home wireless network. After spending 2 hours last night installing this on my father-in-law's home network, I hope to be able to save someone else the agony we went through.
    So here's the situation:
Say you already have your own home network set up, and all you want is to be able to use AirTunes to play music off iTunes into your speaker system. And, you don't need the printer sharing capability nor creation of another wireless network (2 of the features of Airport Express). Then this solution is for you - read on.
Unfortunately, Apple's user manual is very unclear how to connect Airport Express to your own network. When you look at the picture diagram they provide, they show Airport Express picking up its signal from another Apple-oriented base. This can make you think you need to buy another piece of hardware to make it work. DON'T If you read through the manual, the Support section here, etc., you will hear lots of talk about "Client Mode" - and that this is the only way to get it to work. Nice - but no one really tells you how to set up the Airport in client mode.
Do yourself a favor, toss that user manual aside and run these steps.
(Note: These directions assume your DSL/Cable Modem is hooked up to a wireless router or acts as its own wireless router)
    1. Get a cat5 Ethernet cable (anything but an orange cable - that's a crossover cable) like you would use to connect your PC to your router to pick up the Internet.
    2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the router on one end, and to the Airport Express unit on the other end.
    3. Plug in your Airport Express unit to the wall (this will not necessarily become its permanent location - you will be able to move it later). The light will glow solid Amber for about 30-45 seconds while it starts up, then blink Amber. At this point, the unit is ready to operate.
    4. Install the CD to the PC where your iTunes music is stored. This should be painless. Once you open the program, it should detect the Airport unit.
    5. At this point, the on-screen wizard will present you with your options, and walk you through the setup. This is much like the user manual describes - and you should be good to go form here forward.
    Some pointers:
    - When asked if you want to create a new network, join an existing network, or connect via Ethernet, choose the middle option for joining an existing network. You will need to know the name of your network, the password to connect to the network (if present), and the type of encryption used on the network (e.g. WEP, WPA, etc.). Side note, WPA is recommended, as it is a higher level of security than WEP. You will be able to configure the Airport Express unit to automatically login to your network.
    - I would recommend, when creating a password for the Airport Express unit, use the same password as your network, to avoid confusion.
    6. The very last step will ask you to save the settings to the Airport Express. Here's the kicker - when you save the settings, you are TRICKING the Airport Express into no longer acting as a network broadcaster, but instead being a "slave" to your own network. What do I mean? You will lose the connection from your PC to the Airport Express - an error message will pop up telling you the unit can no longer be found. While you might think you did something wrong, you actually were successful!
    7. Unplug your Airport Express, and disconnect the Ethernet cable from your router and the Airport unit. This will no longer be needed.
    8. Go to your desired location where you want to plug in your Airport Express unit. Before plugging it in, connect your Audio cable from the Airport Express to your audio receiver. Once that is connected, then plug in the Airport Express unit. The light will glow solid Amber for 30-45 seconds while it loads, and then will blink Amber for a brief period of time before turning solid GREEN. When this happens, you have successfully connected the Airport Express to your home network!
    9. Go back to your PC with iTunes. Open the Airport software - you should now have a listing for your Airport Express unit in the upper left. Click on this, and the wizard will guide you through connecting - you will need the password you created for the unit. You only need to go through this wizard once, and when finished, the software will tell you that can now use iTunes with your Airport unit.
    10. Open iTunes. On the lower right, you will see a dropdown for Speakers, and it should be defaulted to My Computer. Click on that drop-down, and you will see the name of your Airport unit. Click on that name, and now your music will broadcast to the Airport unit!
    11. Play a song in iTunes. Go to your audio receiver, and connect it to the channel for your external connection to the Airport Express unit. You should hear your music from iTunes. CONGRATULATIONS! =)
I hope these instructions were helpful - I am happy to answer any questions, so feel free to contact me, *******************@*****.**.

Thanks for the detailed directions. You are absolutely correct in stating that people should toss the user manual; it's pretty worthless. I have had a problem setting up my new Airport Express as I have described in an earlier post - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1839873&tstart=45
One quick question - does using your setup process set the AE up as part of a distributed network where the AE is acting as a wireless router where it is extending the range of your network? Or, is it simply a wireless connection to your stereo for iTunes? I am interested in having both, since my AE will be at the other end of the house from the main wireless router.
    Thanks

  • Connect Airport Express to existing Wireless

I have a USR5461 feeding DSL broadband wireless and wired to 3xMac and 2xPC. I want to feed iTunes to my stereo and from what I read this is possible using the Airport Express. I am a bit wary though since the manual does not state this particular configuration and has the caveat on WDS.
My question is, can the Airport Express be connected to an existing non-apple wireless to use AirTunes? I know I can't use it for extending my network. I only want the AirTunes function and possibly the print function.
    Thanks
    iBook G4 1.33 1.5Gb / iMac C2D 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Dell Latitude 600 Windows XP Pro

My question is, can the Airport Express be connected to an existing non-apple wireless to use AirTunes?
Yes, you configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network as a client. The instructions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Anyone use this to boost their existing wireless system

I purchased the airport express to strengthen the signal throughout my home from my existing wireless. I have a cable modem with a linksys wireless router. the signal is weak everywhere in the home but the room it is located in. The best buy guy said this would do the trick. Easy to install, just connect via ethernet and plug in.  Only the airport isnt connecting, still blinking yellow after repeated attempts.  anyone out there have any advice as to what i am doing wrong

Thanks, things are a lot easier when you know what settings to use.
Suggest that you reset the AirPort Express back to factory defaults as follows:
Power down the AirPort Express (AX)
Hold in the reset button (next to the audio port) and keep holding it in as you plug the AX back in to power
Keep holding another 8-10 seconds after you plug the AX in to power, then release
Allow 40-45 seconds for the AX to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the AX to the Ethernet cable from the Linksys router and make sure that the AX is powered up.
Move your laptop close to the AX and be sure to log on to the wireless network that the AX is providing for setup. It will have a name like Apple Network xxxxxxx. There is no security, so no password is required.
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup. If you are asked to "switch networks", that's OK. Click OK to switch so AirPort Utility can communicate correctly to the AX for setup.
Click the Base Station tab located just below the row of icons and assign a name to the AX, a device password (write that down) and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab next to the Base Station tab and adjust your settings to look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your Linksys network
No check mark is needed next to Allow this network to be extended
    Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) a good choice
    Channel = Automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = Same password as the Linksys network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to save settings and allow 30-40 seconds to the AX to restart. You should have a green light in 45 seconds
Then, power cycle the entire network by powering everything off....all network devices, order is important
Start the modem first and let it run a moment
Start the Linksys router next the same say
Start the AX the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time the same way until everything is powered back up
Log back on to your Linksys wireless network if you have not already done so and check for proper network operation. You should have a much stronger signal in the area where the AX is located.

  • Connect none airport G4 to internet wirelessly?

    Hey all,
Hoping someone can help me out here...
I would like to connect a G4 to the internet wirelessly. There is currently no airport or wireless connectivity built in, I did go get myself an ASUS WL-167g WLAN Adapter. This does seem to pick up my wireless but drops after 1/2secs connected then on and off and on and off and so fore.
I can't seem to figure out what the issue is though, G4 tower running Tiger 10.4.11, fresh install of the ASUS drivers from the driver CD for OSX 10.4 and ISP Virgin Boardband WPA passworded but connecting all good. Seems to be when the signal strength gets too high it falls.
Hopefully that is easy enough to understand, let me know if anyone has any bright ideas that I haven't thought off. Thanks all...

Hi, I have 3 of those, they get far better signals than even the newest Airport cards for me!
I assume you're using the USB Wireless Utility?
First, get a USB extension cable & move the ASUS around to see if you get a better signal.
You can also mount i in a Pringles, Swiss Miss, or any other Aluminum foil lined can & get super directional feeds.
If it's your Router, might try changing the channel it transmits on.

  • Can't connect Airport Express to existing wireless network!

I just got my new A Express. i try to wirelessly join an my existing network but when it restarts it doesn't see the device. It's i'm trying to set it up so that I can use it as a wireless printer connection for my two macbooks, but all i end up with is the flashing amber light. I've tried a hard reset and that's clearly not solving the problem.
i'd welcome some help as well.

for some reason i had a problem with my airport in my laptop and it couldnt find networks that are hidden.. so that might be the problem the encryption.

  • Connect a PC to My existing Wireless Network Using Airport Extreme

this is my issue i bought a Airport Express to connect a PC via ethernet to my wireless network already working at home. Cant figure out the settings???? need help. My home network is using a airport extreme base station. the problem is the PC doesn't have wireless capability so i connected the PC to the airport extreme in order to connect to the network, but no luck so far.

Hello Sailor25. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
What you need to do is configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a ProxySTA.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. The feature should work with any wireless network: a, b, g, or n; and 5GHz or 2.4GHz. (Note that the Express, which ships with firmware 7.3, must also be updated to firmware 7.3.1 for this feature to appear.)

  • Can't connect via Airport on a formerly working system

Hi, I could really use some help here! I have a new MacBook (and generally love it). At both home and work I have DSL set up (both wireless and cables in both) and until recently used only PCs. In both settings, I have security set up that requires entering a 26-character password. In both settings, using the Ethernet cable works fine (but seems slow), but I cannot for the life of me figure out why the password doesn't work and wont allow me to connect wirelessly. The passwords are correct, and I've tried entering them everywhere I can -- The WEP, hex and ACSII settings.
Earlier today the Airport picked up the signal from a nearby Apple Store, and the connection was incredibly fast, so I know it CAN work. Can anyone help me with this mystery?
    Thanks!

What is the type of wireless network are you connecting to? Is it a, b, g or n or a combination of any of the two? Is there any security on the wireless network?
Now in System Preferences->Network pane highlight the Airport card. Then at the top of the pane select the 'Location' drop-down and select "Edit Locations" and create a new custom Location calling it what you want. Then in the right hand of the pane hit the 'Apply' button and this will save the new Location you made. Then while still in the Network pane try to connect to your wireless network. See if this help, Good luck.

  • How does one connect time capule in an existing wireless environemnt?

I hope i am reading all of the instructions incorrectly... but I am considering getting time capsule and see 2 major problems. It seems that:
*Time capsul is apparently desiged to run as the local router, with hard wire access to the internet, but
    * I live in an apartment complex that provides wi-fi to all the units -- the hub is *not* accessible to the individual users
    * all of the instructuons seem to imply that i must hard wire the TC to the incoming signal ... oops
    plus...
*at least one set of work-around instruction I found instructs me to connect the TC directly to my computer via the ethernet port, but
    * the new Mac Book Pros do not have an ethernet port, oops again
is the TC eveb usable in such circumstances?

The TC is not designed to work with wifi internet.
So you are quite correct.. nor do you want to use wifi for your building as a link to the TC.. it is possible to join the TC to the wireless network.. but that would mean all packets to the TC go via the building wifi and I suspect they will throttle it or control it some way.
So you have no choice but to find an alternative.
    1. You can use a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter on any MBP or MBA without an ethernet port.. they are much cheaper now.
    2. You can use a USB to ethernet adapter which I would now avoid since the thunderbolt one is $10 more.
    3. You can use a secondary wireless USB on the MBP.. USB wireless dongles that are compatible with Mac OS are readily available and fairly cheap.. kind of ugly but smaller ones are pretty small little bump on the side.
    4. You can buy an airport express. The express is the only apple router that can act as a bridge.. but you can find non-apple wireless bridges readily enough. The express (or bridge) will convert the wireless to ethernet, so you can plug it into the TC and you can then pickup both internet and TC connection via the wireless.. BUTT .. big fat ugly BUTT.. your building will not be handing out public IP addresses and anything you do to route the one address to many will result in double NAT.. this is standard issue.. it may or may not be important to you.
    5. If you need to have a public IP address and there are lots of reasons why you might.. ranging from vpn to work to playing games on line.. all of which is impossible on cheap nasty building wifi.. which is good for email and light browsing.. you will need to buy your very own internet connection.. of whatever type is allowed.. hard wire ones being best but otherwise buy your own 3G / 4G connection.. use the building internet for bulk or cheap usage.. use your better direct internet for real internet.
