Connecting An Amp to Audig

Yep so i have a couple of really good hi fi speakers donated by relati'ves. I've tried these through using my home theatre kit amp, connected via a coaxial lead and a 3.5mm socket adapter to the back of the sound card. Worked swell. Now I need the theatre amp for the home theatre kit obviously so i have acquired a new amp. Its old but was expensi've in its day. Doesn't have a digital in socket, merely phono left/right.
I tried connecting through a 3.5mm to double phono adapter but all i get is crackle and a tiny bit of sound in the background. Can i be advised what leads i need to use to connect my Audigy 4 to the amp? Thanks

Are you trying to connect soundcard into Hi-Fi amplifier through Phono L/R? You can't because of it's intented for turntable and has propably a RIAA stage build-in --> maybe this is the culprit for your issues.
Exact model of the Hi-Fi amp would have been useful but, aren't there any other I/Os available (tape, aux, etc.) on amplifier?

  • Connecting External Amp to Macbook

Hi, sorry if this is one of those "dumb" questions, but I know Macs well but not electronic equipment...
I have a multi-media show that needs some BIG sound to it. In the past, I've hooked up my office speakers to my Mac, but that just doesn't cut it. I have a pretty nice Roland piano amp, is there a way to hook that up to the Macbook, and what would I need? Or if I could score a nice PA amp like a JBL, could I hook that in somehow? What would I need to do on that?
    Thanks for any help.

FWIW, I am a live performance sound mixer by trade & I have had very good results using the 1/8" stereo jack audio output on my new Macbook to connect it to a large, professional audio system of about 20,000 watts. However, keep these tips in mind for best results:
    1. Garbage in = garbage out. IOW, use high quality audio sources wherever possible. A highly compressed MP3 audio file will never sound as crisp & detailed as a 24 bit, 96KHz AIFF file, & the differences will be much more noticeable on a high quality, high power playback system. If you use iTunes to import CD tracks, make sure you set the import preference to "Apple Lossless." Better still, use an app like Audacity to import the tracks or other source material directly into a high quality AIFF format. Do any necessary mixing in that uncompressed format & only compress the final mix if necessary to make it compatible with your presentation playback format.
    2. Do not directly combine the left & right signals in the stereo mini-jack to get a mono signal. For instance, don't use a stereo-to-mono adaptor plug (which really is suitable only for splitting a mono signal into two outputs, regardless of what the guy at Radio Shack or wherever tells you). Instead, use a specially designed adaptor with resistors in it that isolate the two outputs, or (much!) better still, use a mixer with separate inputs for each channel.
    3. You can also use just one channel of the stereo signal, as described in another post, but keep in mind that hearing only one channel of a stereo signal may not sound right. Avoid using a mono 1/8" plug in the stereo jack if you do this. This will short out one of the channels. It won't damage the Macbook, but it may introduce a noticeable amount of distortion in the channel you use. Instead, get an adaptor with a stereo 1/8" plug that splits the channels into separate outputs & use just one of them. (If you are using a musical instrument amp, you can use a 1/8" stereo plug to two 1/4" jacks adaptor & a standard 1/4" to 1/4" patch cable.)
    4. Set the Macbook's audio output level to near maximum & leave it there. Never try to reduce its output to adjust the volume of the attached system -- you will just increase the hum, noise, & residual distortion of the output relative to the signal. If you are using a mixer, it will have an input gain control or "pad" switch that can be used to match the output of the MacBook to its input requirements. If you are using a musical instrument amp, use an input designed for synthesizers or other similar devices if available. If you must use a guitar input, you should obtain a "pad" adaptor that reduces the signal strength by about 20 dB. Basically, the MacBook outputs a "line level" signal, so your playback equipment should be capable of handling that without having to turn down its primary or channel volume controls to nearly off to keep from overdriving anything.
    5. To avoid stress & strain on the MacBook's jack, use an adaptor cable rather than a one-piece adaptor that results in a long, inflexible plug & adaptor combination hanging off the side of the MacBook. If you need to use a security lock & cable in the MacBook's security slot, you will have to avoid the fat, solid adaptors anyway, since the slot & jack are closely spaced. (If you use a typical security cable with a rotating locking head, also be careful not to allow it to rotate around & apply side pressure to the plug.)
    6. Use good quality cables & adaptors. You don't have to spend a fortune on over-priced "audiophile" cables because the MacBook's audio outputs are low impedance, relatively high current ones quite capable of driving normal, run-of-the-mill cables, but you do have to have good connections to insure a clean signal. Mostly, this is a matter of using mechanically well-made plugs & jacks with good contact materials, not the construction of the cables themselves.

  • Connecting an amp with XLR outputs to GB

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum, to Mac world and to recording as well, so please be patient... I'm trying to find out what would be the best way to record an amp guitar into GB. Right now I'm using the amp XLR right and left outputs directly into the Mac’s input (with the use of an adapter) and for the most it works ok... except for a horrible humming noise that I can only get rid by cranking the noise gate really high, which cuts off some of the notes on the guitar. Based what I have read so far on the forum looks like my immediate problem is my set up (directly into the Mac). The amp is a Fender Cyber Twin. I also own a drum machine (which when I connect directly into the Mac produce no noise or hum) and I'm also planning on buying a keyboard on the not so distant future. Will an USB or Fire Wire mixer solve this problem? Or a USB/Fire Wire interface is better suited in this situation? Any help will be much appreciated.
    -thanks

The problem arises because the XLRs are balanced and you are feeding them into (I assume) unbalanced phono sockets. This note I found may help:
"If it's a floating (passive) balanced output you can connect pin 2 of the XLR to the phono pin and pin 3 to the ring. If it's an active balanced output then you may be able to XLR pin 2 to the phono pin and pin 1 to the phono ring, leaving pin 3 unconnected. If that fails try connecting XLR pin 3 to the phono pin, XLR pin 1 to the ring and leavin pin 2 unconnected. Both of these approaches may well cause distortion or more noise."
However your best bet by far would be to get an interface to connect the Fender's SP/DIF (coaxial) output to the Mac via USB - e.g.
    http://www.jdsound.com/Terratec-Phase-26-USB-P6689C0.aspx
(I haven't used this: please research thoroughly if you decide to go ahead.) There don't seem nowadays to be many coax digital to USB interfaces - the Edirol UA-1D would have been the simplest and cheapest bet but is apparently no longer made... try eBay?

Can someone suggest how I can "maximize" the connectivity between these components, given the receivers HDMI connectivity limitations? Thanks in advance!Conne

HDMI video from the blu-ray and box to the TV.
Optical or coaxial digital audio from the blu-ray and cable box to the receiver
Only thing you're missing is the fact that you need to change inputs on both receiver and TV, while an HDMI-enabled receiver often performs video switching when you change audio inputs.

  • DAC for Vision M or how to connect to Amp

) What is the best DAC for the Zen Vision M? Are there any docking stations the Creative MP3 players available? Or do I just find a DAC that will take a USB input? I'm sure there is a way to get the best sound to my music system but I haven't been able to find this...

    - DAC = Digital to Analog Converter.
I'm no geek - but the way I understand this is that the quality of the converter is a huge impact to the quality of sound. Now the MP3 player (Zen or Ipod) has it's own internal DAC which is how you get the sound in the headphones. But there are docking stations or external DACs which essentially bypass the MP3 player's internal DAC and do the conversion from the mp3 directly, resulting in much better sound.
There are tonnes available for the ipod - see here: http://www.google.com/search?q=DAC+for+ipod&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a
Standing out is the Wadia DAC which bypasses the Ipod internal DAC. http://www.wadia.com/products/transports/70i/
But there is nothing I've been able to find for the Zen. Right now I'm just taking a cable from the headphone jack to the amplifier.

  • Can i use Marshall amp as audio interface/preamp to connect to Garageband(to prevent the feedback when connected to macs audio port)

I have been trying to connect my guitar to my macbook 1,1 for use with Garageband and Mainstage. As per the garageband manual i  was connecting my Fender Strat Squire straight into my mac audio port using the 1/4-1/8 adapter. When i do this the sound quality ***** especially when i try to use some of the virtual amp settings that create distortion and cool effects. Basically anytime im playing my guitar in GB or Mainstage and im connected straight into the audio port i get a MASSIVE amount of feedback noise and no matter what i do with the noise gate or settings i cant get it to go away unless i turn the settings down so low i can barely hear the guitar. I know that you can purchase an 'audio interface' or 'preamp' like Apogee or M-Audio Fastrack or some of the many others and this allows for clean sounding recording. My query is basically this: i have a Marshall MG100 DFX that does appear to have an emulated line out port that the manual says i can use to "connect your amp directly to your multi-track recording machine". Does this mean i can just use my amp as my audio interface between my guitar and my computer? I seem to remember hearing before that this was possible but i want to be sure. I really dont want to spend $ on an audio interface as they are very expensive and i figure if my Marshall amp can work  just the same ill stick with that for now. Any responses and advice will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for your time.

    yes, you can try it
make sure you're using the line-IN, either way:

  • Can I use Express to connect multiple ceiling installed speakers?

I am remodeling my house and would like to put speakers in multiple rooms in my house. How would I go about doing this? Will I need to get an Express for each room in order to control when I want sound to come out of the speaker? If I want to put 2 speakers in the living room, how do I go about connecting both speakers to 1 Express station?

I agree, hook up the speakers to an amp and then connect the amp to the airport express. and yes, you'll need an airport express for each room.
while not as cool - and also not as buggy and probably cheaper and definitely more extensible - use wired connections. they're less susceptible to interference (google "airtunes drop out"). then you can get a controller that will let you turn on and off the music/tv/dvd/sound in any room you choose. if you're remodelling your house then i'm sure you're already tearing up the walls. i'd hate to set up my house(!) to use airtunes without a wired redundancy.
good luck, it sounds like you'll have fun when you're done fixing up the place.

  • Connecting a record deck to AUX IN 2 (x-fi I/O) - Wanting to convert vin

X-Fi PlatinumI'm presuming I just connect the L/R audio lead from my record deck directly into the L/R 'AUX IN 2' and launch Audio Creation Mode to start recording my vinyl?I tried this and there was no sound coming through. I have sound in all other applications so do I need to put my deck through an amp then connect my amp to the AUX IN 2 input on the X-Fi I/O?I was hoping it would be an uncomplicated process but it appears I was nai've to think it would be that easy. Launched Audio Creation Mode and now have full control over the audio. I'm able to adjust settings on my amp and also those that Audio Creation Mode offers.
Ran a few test recordings to check it was all working, now I just need to fine tune to ensure I get good quality recordings while keeping the file size down.
Only problem I face is the recordings are in WAV format. Why they didn't include MP3 is beyond me but you can purchase the addon for this feature from creative for an additional $9.99. Not sure which is the easiest option, do I get the addon or use some different software to convert the files later. Possibly iTunes?
Media Monkey is a great tool for this WAV to MP3 conversion ... you even get your MP3 files tagged automatically ...

  • Getting the Right Connections

Lo and behold but what did I get from my daughter and son in law this AM but an Apple TV! I had a bad enough time putting together my AV receiver and HD TV (both made by Sony) and now I am a bit uncertain as to how to connect the Apple TV to my existing setup. The instructions are clear enough - the Apple TV should be connected to the HD TV - but if I do it this way, I don't think that I'm going to get the sound coming through the AV receiver to the 5.1 speaker setup that I now have.
The AV receiver has 3 HDMI inputs in the back and their status at the present is as follows
    1. connects to the PVR
    2. connects to the BlueRay player
    3. unused
The single HDMI OUT port on the back of the AV Receiver goes to one of three HDMI IN ports on the back of the HD TV. So the big question for me is -
Can I connect the Apple TV to the last unused HDMI input on the receiver instead of the TV and still have things work properly?
    Thanks
    John

Correct. If you wanted to though you could connect AppleTV optical ut to the Av receiver.
The AV receiver has 3 HDMI inputs ...
    3. unused

In theory yes, though AppleTV doesn't lways like connecting via amps or HDMI switches - chances are it'll work fine. Most issues occur when people change input on amp and AppleTV gets HDMI confusion as its no longer selected - this happens in some cases, not all.
    Thanks

  • Fender Mustang I amp into Garageband for iPad

I am trying to connect my Fender Mustang I amp into Garageband using the USB out on the amp into the Camera Connection Kit (CCK) into the iPad2. I have read of many users being able to successfully do this, but I have had no luck.
The Mustang has been updated with the most recent firmware and software. The USB appears to be functioning properly, as I was able to download the recent firmware update.
The CCK is working fine, as I've tested plugging a camera into it, and the iPad read the camera perfectly.
Garageband is also working fine as well.
I have read NatSci's advise in the "Guitar Inputs" thread, and followed these exactly, yet have not been able to successfully get any input. The only input I am getting is the external mic.
The first time I plugged in the CCK with the Mustang Amp, I received a message of (I believe) "This USB device is not supported".
Anyone have any thoughts on how to get this to work? Thanks.

can you describe the exact rocedure to connect the amp on the iPad ??
i see you have an iPad 2 and the accesorie CCK (Camera Connection Kit)
of course you will connect the right adapter with the USB port on the iPad.
Then you will connect the amp...
and what is next to get this amp working ??
i read about updates and firmwares.
as far as i can read you did the next steps.
    1. Updated the amp with latest firmware and software.
    2. Turn off the amp and turn it on again (just for sure that the update is fully operate after updating),
    3. Update the iPad with latest iOS (for now it is iOS 6)
    4. Reboot the iPad (just for sure the iOS is fully operating after updating),
    5. Connect the adapter with usb port,
    6. Connect the amp to the adapter,
    7. Reboot the iPad,
    8. Open garageband,
    and happy jamming
is this the right procedure to do it ?
(probably step 2 and 4 is not needed, but just to make sure everything is properly up and running)

I was able to connect to my parents home linksystem for years, as well as my airport express. Recently i had an internet hotspot that i connected to with my iPhone4 & macbook. After using the hotspot the linksystem at home now has a "timeout error" every time i try to connect it. the iPhone & macbook both see it, show full signal, but cannot connect.
my mothers iPad connects, my fathers PC's both connect.
I can connect to apple store wifi, any other wifi, hotspots, etc.
I cannot for the life of me reconnect with the linksystem.
YES, i have restarted it, yes it is on, yes i have checked my settings. it was in my keychain as a KNOWN, working, correct good wifi. no the password didn't change. I've been an apple guy since middle school, and i never had this issue that remained after a hard reset of the linksys.
literally one week i used a hotspot and then went back to their house and suddenly nogo.
what kind of glitch/erraneous data could be affecting my (just updated to OS Lion & iOS5, still no connect) iPhone4 & 2008 macbook 2.2ghz?

excuse me, not linksystem, its a verizon FIOS wireless router & modem as part of the package. i was thinking my old setup.
