Connecting an amp with XLR outputs to GB

Hi,
I'm new to the forum, to Mac world and to recording as well, so please be patient... I'm trying to find out what would be the best way to record an amp guitar into GB. Right now I'm using the amp XLR right and left outputs directly into the Mac’s input (with the use of an adapter) and for the most it works ok... except for a horrible humming noise that I can only get rid by cranking the noise gate really high, which cuts off some of the notes on the guitar. Based what I have read so far on the forum looks like my immediate problem is my set up (directly into the Mac). The amp is a Fender Cyber Twin. I also own a drum machine (which when I connect directly into the Mac produce no noise or hum) and I'm also planning on buying a keyboard on the not so distant future. Will an USB or Fire Wire mixer solve this problem? Or a USB/Fire Wire interface is better suited in this situation? Any help will be much appreciated.
-thanks

iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The problem arises because the XLRs are balanced and you are feeding them into (I assume) unbalanced phono sockets. This note I found may help:
"If it's a floating (passive) balanced output you can connect pin 2 of the XLR to the phono pin and pin 3 to the ring. If it's an active balanced output then you may be able to XLR pin 2 to the phono pin and pin 1 to the phono ring, leaving pin 3 unconnected. If that fails try connecting XLR pin 3 to the phono pin, XLR pin 1 to the ring and leavin pin 2 unconnected. Both of these approaches may well cause distortion or more noise."
However your best bet by far would be to get an interface to connect the Fender's SP/DIF (coaxial) output to the Mac via USB - e.g.
http://www.jdsound.com/Terratec-Phase-26-USB-P6689C0.aspx
(I haven't used this: please research thoroughly if you decide to go ahead.) There don't seem nowadays to be many coax digital to USB interfaces - the Edirol UA-1D would have been the simplest and cheapest bet but is apparently no longer made... try eBay?

I'm having problem networking a Yamaha home theatre amp with vTuner (net radio) with my 2nd gen Time Capule. I only occasionally connect.

Remember everything outside Apple uses SMB type network protocol, not AFP..
That means all your names have to be SMB compatible.. ie
TC name, wireless names, hard disk name..
They must be short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Explain how the whole network is connected.. which is the main router.. ?
How is TC2 connected to TC1?

  • AppleTV audio out to old amp with only analog audio

I'm thinking about getting the Apple TV for both video and for playing my music on my home stereo system. I currently have an old amp with only analog audio capabilities, but the new ATV looks like it only supports digital optical out, and the digital to analog converters I've looked for seem pretty expensive. How can I get the audio from my music collection (iTunes) to play wirelessly through ATV through my amp?
I currently also have an Airport Express which I use for audio, but I was thinking of selling that and just using the ATV since the ATV can essentially do the same thing as the AX with added video benefit. I've seen some threads on streaming audio from the ATV to the AX, but do I really need both? Seems like there should be another way.
I was thinking of connecting the ATV to my TV via HDMI cable for audio, and then using an analog audio out from the TV to my amp. But, if I'm correct, that would only provide me with sound coming from the TV. It wouldn't give sound out from iTunes, for example. Is that right?
    Are there any other options?

Followings are my observations in audio streaming with Apple TV 3 and Airport Express through AirPlay protocol:
-- Apple TV 3 come with only digital audio outputs through HDMI and optical SPDIF outputs. If you connect optical link from the optical output to optical input of any DAC and HDMI cable from the HDMI output to HDMI input on TV set, audio output will be transmitted through both digital outputs. Thus is is not necessary to turn on TV set unless visual feedback is required. There is no audio analog line output for Apple TV 3.
-- AirportExpress come with single combo mini jack (digital + analog) for audio output regardless of old/new models. You can connect either digital optical link (with Mini/Toslink adaptor) to digital input of DAC or analog line cable (inferior) to analog line input of amplifier. When analog line is used, digital-to-analog conversion is done by DAC built into AirportExpress for which do not expect quality is as good as most external DAC models. What do you expect from a single-chip DAC implementation vs standalone DAC models cost few thousand dollars ? Moreover analog line is susceptible to interference more than digital line.
So the decision to use Apple TV or AirportExpress, analog or digital transmission for audio streaming depends on whether you need WiFi base station features of AirportExpress to establish wireless network and quality of your audio system to justify all-digital audio transmission. Followings are what I use in audio streaming from iMac/iPad mini /iPhone 5 to audio system in living room. Quality of audio output is comparable with Sonos Zone Player as audio source.

I connect my mic with an M-audio mobile pre usb device.  When I try to record, I can see that my voice is recording but can't hear it during playback.  I tried different input and output settings but it didn't help.  Any help will be appreciated.

Hear your microphone or instrument as you play and record (monitoring)
You can hear, or monitor, input from an instrument or microphone in GarageBand while you play and record. When you turn on monitoring for a track, you hear the musical instrument or microphone connected to the track’s input. Monitoring lets you hear yourself play so that you can hear the part you want to record as well as the rest of the project.
You can turn on monitoring for a Real Instrument track or Electric Guitartrack from the track’s header, or in the Track Info pane. Electric Guitar tracks always show their monitoring buttons, and you can show monitoring buttons for Real Instrument tracks using a menu command. You can use monitoring with feedback protection to avoid feedback while you play.
    Hide
To turn on monitoring in the track header:
Choose Track > “Show Monitoring for Real Instrument Tracks.”Monitor buttons appear in the headers of Real Instrument tracks. On tracks with monitoring turned on, the button lights yellow.
Click the Monitor button in the header of the track you want to use.
HideTo turn on monitoring in the Track Info pane:
Double-click the header of the Real Instrument or Electric Guitar track you want to turn on monitoring for.The Track Info pane opens.
From the Monitor pop-up menu, choose one of the following:
Choose Off to turn off monitoring. You can hear your instrument only while you record.
Choose On to turn on monitoring and protect against feedback.
Choose On (no feedback protection) to turn on monitoring without feedback protection. If the input level is too high, it may cause feedback (especially if you are using a microphone and listening to your project through your computer speakers).
For an Electric Guitar track, you can view the Monitor pop-up menu by clicking Edit, and then clicking the back side of the amp. The Monitor pop-up menu appears with the input controls below the stage.
You should usually turn off monitoring when you are not playing or singing. When monitoring is turned on, your computer can pick up output from your speakers or monitors, causing unwanted feedback. Using headphones rather than speakers to listen to your projects can help eliminate feedback.
If you select your computer’s built-in microphone as the audio input, in the Audio/MIDI pane of GarageBand preferences, monitoring is turned off for all Electric Guitar tracks to avoid unwanted noise.

  • Satellite L500-13e connected to TV with HDMI cable - no sound on TV

Hi! Sorry my English is bad.
I have a problem, i tried to connect my notebook with TV through HDMI, but
sound playing on notebook rather than TV ...
In Realtek HD Manager i didn't find "HDMI Output options"
Please, suggest what should I do?

The whole story is a little bit strange now.
As far as I know Satellite L500-13E is delivered with preinstalled Vista Home Premium and all drivers must be preinstalled.
I don't understand how you can suddenly have this yellow question mark in device manager.
What have you done with your notebook?
Anyway, at first try to remove sound device from device manager and restart your notebook. If the yellow question mark is still there install Vista sound driver. You can find it on Toshiba download page - http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

  • Can a laptop with VGA output use the Apple Thunderbolt 27" display?

I bought a 2011 Macbook Air and I'm thinking about upgrading my office monitor. The new Apple Thunderbolt 27" display comes to mind.
However, I also have a Lenovo X201 with VGA output, which I would also like to connect to the Apple Thunderbolt 27" display sporadically.
Will the VGA to mini-display port adapter work? If not, does there exist a VGA to mini-display port converter that will work and if so which one?

You are thinking of that adapter backwards.  It is not VGA to MDP but is "Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter".  This means it will take video out of a a MDP connection and convert it to a VGA connection.  It will not go the other direction like you need.
Sorry but that Lenovo just doesn't have the ability to connect to the new display.  If it had a HDMI video port like some other Lenovo models, you could adapt from that but I don't know of any VGA to Mini-DisplayPort/ThunderBolt adapters.
Even if you were to use such an adapter, the video card in that laptop couldn't drive a 27" display at the native resolution so it would look very bad.
One other option would be to use the Lenovo X200 docking station which has a full sized Display Port.  You would have to use a Display Port to Mini Display port adapter then you could attach the TB cable to it.  There is also a USB video replicator that has a DVI-I output then then yet another adapter to get to Mini-Display.
However, both of these options would still be limited by the graphics card at 1920x1080 so it still wouldn't look good.

  • Problem with RTPExport output video files

Hi, I have a problem with RTPExport output video files. One side streams H263/RTP(AVTransmit2.java) and other write this steam to a file by RTPExport.java. When network conditions are ideal, output video file has same fps and same number of frames like original file. Problem occures, when theres packet lost in network, then output file has different fps,and also has less frames like original video(because it didnt write missing frames to file, and thats why it get shorter). Pls how can I achieve output file that will have the same fps like original one? How to write to file an identical copy of what I can see while receiveing video with AVReceive2.java? Its there a way to modifi rtpexport or avreceiver to do this? Thanks a lot!

Problem occures, when theres packet lost in network, then output file has different fps,and also has less frames like original video(because it didnt write missing frames to file, and thats why it get shorter). Okay, first off, the second file is smaller on purpose. RTP intentionally drops packets that are old/out of order in order to make sure real-time video stays as close to real time as it can. This is by design, so there's really nothing that can be done about it.
How to write to file an identical copy of what I can see while receiveing video with AVReceive2.java? Technically speaking, what you're getting in the RTPExport is exactly what you got on the receiving end. Any frames that are dropped during transmission will not be seen by the receiver, nor saved by the receiver.
Pls how can I achieve output file that will have the same fps like original one? I'm not 100% sure that you can, but, you can give the following idea a try. I make no guarentees that it'll work, but it should work for you...
That example is an example of a "custom transport layer" for RTP connections. Essentially, it's some code that's handed the RTP packets on the transmission end, and it's expected to deliver those RTP packets on the other end. And it doesn't care about how they get from A to B, only that they do.
If you were to replace the UDP socket in that example with a TCP socket, you would be guarenteed not to drop packets due to network reasons. Every RTP packet you were handed by the transmitter, you would then hand to the receiver. There is no guarentee that none of the packets would be cast away as "old" by the RTP protocol itself, but there's also no guarentee any of them would be. It's a crap-shoot at best, but it's certainly worth a try.

  • Problem with digital output and microph

Hello! I recently bought a new motherboard MSI K8N SLI Platinum that have onboard Sounblaster Li've 24bit, with coaxial and spdif and also the standard outputs. I ve connected via a fiber optical cable to my amplifier and i checked the digital output only box to the advanced settings on the mixer. I am hearing sound very well from my amplifier but when i connect headphones to with microphone to my soundcard , i don't hear anything at all from my headphones. Also i cannot speak via microphone. If i uncheck the box digital output only i hear sound from my headphones and also i can speak to microphone. Is there some way to have them both enabled? In my previous motherboard i didn't have that problem. I could hear sound from my amplifier with pcm signal and from my headphones and microphone analog at the same time.
    Thanks!

    Thibaud,
The clue is here: " i take acquisition with one sample on demand."
You are apparently using software timed output. To maintain accurate phasing at 80 Hz you need timing which is accurate to better than 4 milliseconds. This is not likely to occur with a desktop operating system. Sometimes it will be good and other times OS latencies will throw the timing way off.
If your board supports it, use hardware timing. The timebase sources on most boards are far more precise and accurate than software timing.

  • Connecting digital camera w/video output to ipod

can i view pics by connecting my digital camera with video output straight into my ipod?

    Stephen,
I had posted a similar question here regarding downloading video from my digital camera. No replies, so I went to the Apple store today with my Sony DSC-H1 with a short video and a few photos on it. Had it hooked up through the "camera connector" accessory to the new iPod and everything was successfully downloaded to the iPod. The photos can be viewed on the iPod but the video is not in a format recognized by the iPod, so you can't review the video but the stored video can then be loaded onto your Mac for editing, etc.
A 1 gig Memory Stick for my camera costs $125.00 CDN, so for the price of 4 I can get 60 gigs of storage. SOLD!

  • Pre-Amp with MS-2?

I just purchased a Marshall MS-2 micro amp to record electric guitar into Garageband. I plugged the headphone out into the line in on the Mac and nothing. No green level lights. I got no sound at all. I have used my regular Fender practice amp to record electric guitar, but was hoping to be able to use this convenient little desktop amplifier.
Any ideas why it won't work?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks.
I had been using my regular amp with success as recently as yesterday, so I know it isn't a settings issue. I checked the cords and they are all fine. It is just for some reason there is no signal from the micro amp output to the GB track. I checked that the monitor is on etc.
The whole reason to get this MS-2 was to avoid dragging my big amp out all the time in my tiny flat. What a bummer...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

There are 2 ways to connect your iPod with the external speakers i.e. via the headphone jack or the dock below the iPod.
You will get better sound quality via the dock, via the dock station (there are plenties) you can connect to the input of a HiFi system and have sound there. Bear in mind you cant control the volume with iPod but one a volume knob of the HiFi system.
The speakers system you are looking for iPod must have an amp. build in. There are hundred iPod speakers system in the market. My recommendation are iPod HiFi, Bose sounddock or B&W . Always trust your ears for the sound quality, my favournite may be not your cup of tea
