Connecting an external disk after ejection

Is it possible to reconnect an external disk after being ejected?

YESS!
I was just thinking it to be possible within Finder but I tried it with DU now and succeeded.
Thanks.

  • How to connect an external disk to time capsule?

    Hi,
I've just connected my new external disk 2TB to the time capsule device. However, it doesn't show in the disk tab in Airport express. Yes, of course the disk is on, it's hfs+journaled formatted and works fine when connected directly to my usb port on my MacBook Pro.
    Any suggestion, please?
    Thanks.

Unless this is a really new feature, Airport Express doesn't support external USB disks; only USB printers.
The Wireless-N Time Capsules and Airport Extremes support external USB disks.

  • Loss of privileges to external disk after using it with Airport Extreme

My wife and I both have MacBook Pros, dual 2 cores running OS 10.5.8. I bought an Airport Extreme to see if we could share songs & pictures wirelessly from the same libraries. I connected an external hard disk to the AEBS and got it set up as a "server". The songs in iTunes worked well, but the photos were a problem because we don't use the same version of iPhoto, also it was slow to process photos wirelessly and the AEBS seemed to randomly kick one or both MBPs off the network, necessitating a restart of all devices. Anyway, I've decided to do away with the AEBS.
Problem is, now when I connect the external hard disk to either computer, I don't have access privileges. How can I fix this without wiping the drive?
    Thanks

Well, I guess I should've explored the Get Info window before posting. I was able to rectify access privileges.
Anyone got a handle on the whole AEBS knocking users off network?

  • OS X 10.8.5 causes external disk to eject improperly

Ever since updating to 10.8.5 I'm having a problem with my external Time Machine drive when my iMac goes to sleep.  When I return to the computer, the folling warning pops up on the screen:
I'm not doing anything differently than I've always done.  This problem started right after installing 10.8.5, so I'm assuming the problem lies there.  Anyone else having a similar problem?  Anyone know of a fix? The drive is a 3TB LaCie d2 with a Thunderbolt connection.  The Mac is a 21.5", late 2012 iMac with Fusion Drive.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Can't write to external disk after cloning startup disk to it

After cloning my PowerBook Pro's startup disk to an external Thunderbolt drive, and temporarily using that drive to boot-up, the Thunderbolt drive is locked into Read Only mode.  How do I enable it to write again? The INFO pane says the following: System privilege: "Read & Write"; wheel: "Read Only"; everyone: "Read Only".  The basis for my cloning was to deal with a very full startup disk that I did a lot of video editing on (very processor intensive).  The disk had become fragmented to the point that it couldn't access sectors fast enough for editing, so I cloned it over to a G-Tech Thunderbolt drive (using Carbon Copy Cloner), reformatted the MacBook startup disk, then reverse-cloned the copied files back over from the Thunderbolt, the idea being that they'd be re-written nice 'n neat in unfragmented order into their proper sectors. I then ceased booting-up from Thunderbolt, but now the system seems to think that Thunderbolt is still special in some way like a gossling bonded to a surrogate human mother, and it won't let me write to it.  Can anybody help me with this?

Have you verified and if necessary, repaired the disk(s) using Disk Utility on your Mac?

  • Ejecting external disk drive--eject drive only or "both partitions"?

Hello! I have a new Macbook Pro and just used Time Machine for the first time to back up all my data. I am ready to eject the GoFlex external drive, but I received this message:
“FreeAgent GoFlex Drive” is a partition on a disk that has 2 partitions. Do you want to eject “FreeAgent GoFlex Drive” only, or both partitions?
Does this mean the GoFlex external drive has 2 partitions? Or does it mean one partition is on the GoFlex drive and the other drive is on my laptop?
Any advice on which option I should choose?
    Thanks very much!

FYI, I chose "eject all" and the world didn't end, so that's good. If anyone can explain to me what I did, though, I'd appreciate it. Many thanks!

  • Macbook Air/Pro difficult to connect to Airport Extreme and external disk

For some unclear reason my MacBook Pro and Air both have difficulty connecting to the Airport Extreme external disk after waking up from sleep. I can't even see the AE in the Airport utility. If I toggle wifi on/off several times it shows up and works. What is odd is that I can always connect with my PC and on the Bootcamp partition of the Macbook Air in Windows 8.1. I'm using OS 10.10, the most recent update and have a latest model AE running updated firmware. Any ideas?

Probably Yosemite issues.  I have issues seeing Airports as well.  Like you toggling the wifi fixes it.  Hopefully 10.10.2 will solve the problem.

  • Problems connecting external disk to my Thomson router

When i connect my external disk to my Thomson router the Mountain Lion can't access to it inside my home wireless network. With the app muCommander i can access it by writing the IP address but in Finder i can't access it. Any ideas?

I apologize if this is answered elsewhere, but I
could not navigate through to the right thread.
I've just bought a Maxtor One Touch III for Macintosh
(500gb). Having connected it to my Airport Extreme I
can see the disk in Disk Utility.
    [portions omitted] .
What am I doing wrong? Please help
I am using the 750GB Maxton OneTouch III with the extreme software 7.1 with absolutely no problem. This is one of the drives that actually gets recognized even after power down - power up.

  • Duplicate backups of external disk to Time Capsule

I am backing up to a Time Capsule. Backup of the internal disk (Machintosh HD) is working fine. I also have an external firewire disk (Media) with my itunes library on it - when I connected in the external disk, it got backed up by Time Machine too.
So all seemed well, until tonight. The problem is that I don't always connect the firewire disk - so for a couple of nights, Time Machine was backing up the internal disk only. Tonight when I did connect the external disk, Time Machine backed up the entire disk, from scratch again!
It looks like Time Machine can't handle looking back through previous backups in a disk orientated way...it misses that 'Media' was last backed up 3 backups ago, so starts from scratch.
2008-08-31-002721/Macintosh HD <- incremental files only
    /Media <- incremental files only
2008-09-01-202431/Macintosh HD <- incremental files only
2008-09-02-194944/Macintosh HD <- incremental files only
2008-09-03-193024/Macintosh HD <- incremental files only
    /Media <- copies all files!
    Anyone else seen this?
Apple: any chance of a fix for this?
    Tim

Of course. Your Time Capsule won't use the external drive to store backups (they will be stored in the Time Capsule's hard disk), so you can use the external drive to store other data.
After plugging the external drive onto the Time Capsule, open a Finder window and you will see the external drive in the sidebar, under "Shared"

  • IiTunes library on an external disk

I know there have been mny discussions about this but I can't seem to find one that matches my problem.
I use iTunes on an old MacMini as a Sonos server, with the library and all files on an external disk. I wanted to merge this library with an iTunes library on another imac, a faster one, and so connected the external disk to the imac and made the merge. I then used TuneUp to tidy up all of the files, get new artwork etc. On the imac iTunes worked perfectly – all the music seemed to be available and worked well.
I ejected the external disk, connected it to the MacMini, opened up iTunes via the option key and rediredted preferences to the new library on the external dirive (actually to the complete iTune folder).
Now, only half of my music seems to be available. A lot of it appears with the dead track exclamation mark but when I try to play it I can navigate to the folder where the track is and select it. Itunes then asks if I want to locate other dead tracks in the sme folder. I click yes and the beacball appears but iTunes doesn't find the tracks and reports another 5000 or so tracks ar missing. All the missing tracks seem to be pointed to the itunes library of my imac, not the mini, but other tracks appearing in the itunes window are pointed to the mini.
Why did this happen and how can I fix it - tried Powertunes but that failed too.

Yes, it's most certainly possible. The easiest way is to just drag the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. Note that this procedure assumes that all of your content is contained in the iTunes Media/Music folder. If things are scattered around your drive, moving them becomes much more complex.
Once you get things moved successfully, be sure not to launch iTunes with the external drive not mounted or iTunes will default back to the internal drive. If it does, though, just mount the external drive and launch iTunes with the Shift key again.
    Regards.

  • Won't show external monitor after updating to 10.9.2

Late model 2012 macbook pro (non-retina) won't connect to external monitor after updating to 10.9.2    Tried PRAM, cleaning preferences; in safe mode the monitor does show up, but how does that help me?
    Bob

I have the same problem with my mid 2012 mbp, but I can get the external monitor to show if I dont using the mirroring feature. Not exactly what I want to use but it may help if no one can find a solution.

  • External disk problem with AVI files

    Hi
I do have Premiere elements 7 installed on a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista.
I have just rendered (DV camera to AVI files) some 20 tapes to my external disk (usb and fire wire connection) and everyuthing worked perfect.
A week later Premiere complains that I have not the correct codec installed.
However AVI files stored on my laptop still works.
Someone that has a clue about this?
    Second problem.
When renering the DV camera to AVI files directly to the laptop the dates works fine.
When i copy them to an external disk, the dates are replaced with todays date and I can not anymore see the shooting date.

    Hi,
Thanks, the forum seems to be a good knowledgebase. And thanks for your fast reply.
The thing is that I have a external disk with firewire and USB input.
However the laptop has only one firewire connection, so when rendering I use the laptop firewire for my Sony DCR-TRV33E and connects the external disk with USB.
When I create my videos, I connect the external disk with firewire.
However the problem is the same even if I try with USB or Firewire.
BUT last week it worked with both?????

  • Airport Extreme used as access point. External disk does not show up in Finder

The title pretty much sums it up. I'm using my Airport as just an access point. I connected an external disk to it. The disk shows up in the Airport Utility, however I cannot connect to it because my Airport has never shown up in Finder. I went to preferences and checked Connected Servers, still no go. Any advice?

    A few things to check:
The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or FAT32
Since the USB port on  the AirPort Extreme is under powered, you almost always have to use a powered USB hub when connecting a hard drive, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
When locating the disk on your Mac, open Macintosh HD or the Finder and look for the AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window.
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon and a folder will appear to the right representing your drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop

  • Secure Empty Thrash on external disk problem

If I try to use "Secure Empty Thrash" on an external disk, after a few (1-3) items are thrashed (sometimes even none), the Finder sticks, nothing more happens and, as usual, clicking on "Stop emptying thrash" on the bar does nothing either, so that I finally have to do "Force Quit" on the Finder. This is clearly not good...

    1. Yes, apologies. For thrash read trash throughout. Dumping the com.apple.finder.plist file seems to have worked to some extent, or at least helped. What is now happening is that files (whether on hard drive or external) take much longer to trash securely than they did under Tiger, even when they are completely empty. Interestingly, when securely trashing single files of any kind or size, and even empty folders, the Finder appears to think it is dealing with 10 items in each case - at least, that is what appears on the bar. I would still like to know what is going on.
    2. I have discovered the source of the mysterious folders - apparently it's related to the Epson TWAIN plug-in for Photoshop CS and CS2 (see http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070215095449325)
