Connecting an Extreme to coaxial cable?

I have Time Warner cable and everything goes through coaxial cable with them. I have very few ethernet ports in the walls in my home, though I have coaxial cables ports in almost each room that they can make active so I could move my Airport Extreme N to another room. Is there a way to connect an Airport Extreme N to the coaxial cable from a wall?
Thanks.

You must have two AFAIK.. one at each end..
You cannot plug ethernet into the other end so you need adapters at each end.
The speed will be 100mbps or less.. how much less depends on quality of the cable and length. No body can tell you the answer without testing.

  • How do I add an airport extreme to a cable modem with only one ethernet port, while keeping that port connected to my Mac?

I have a mac pro connected by ethernet to a cable modem via ethernet.    There is only one ethernet port on the modem.
I want to keep the Mac connected via ethernet for speed.    Is there a way that I can add an airport extreme to this set up - for my ipad and roku, and for guests to use - or do I need to buy a router to put between the modem and the mac?
If I need a router, what kind?
    Thanks.

The modem connects to the WAN "O" port on an AirPort Extreme router.
The Mac Pro connects to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme router.
Or if you do not need the ability to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the router, you can save a bit by using an AirPort Express.
The modem connects to the WAN "O" port, the Mac Pro connects to the LAN <-> port
Either the AirPort Extreme router or AirPort Express router will allow up to 50 wireless device to connect.
There are many other wireless modems offered by other manufacturers as well.

  • Connect Airport Extreme to existing router without ethernet cable

I am looking to connect my Airport Extreme to an existing router without the use of the ethernet cable.  The existing router is on the ground floor whilst I would like to install the Airport Extreme in the first floor to improve WiFi range on the 1st floor.  I am able to connect Airport Extreme to the router with the ethernet cable (in which case both the devices have to be close to one another on the ground floor) but unable to get Airport Extreme set up without the ethernet cable.  Is it possible to connect Airport Extreme to the existing router on a non-wired basis (i.e. without the ethernet cable) and if yes, how would be I able to do it.  Any help would be appreciated.

The AirPort Extreme can connect wirelessly.....IF.....your existing router is also another Apple router.
Is that the case here?  If yes, what model number is your existing Apple router?
If no, you will need to continue to connect the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection.

  • Can I connect my Linksys WRT160N V3 with Airport Extreme via ethernet cable?

I have a Linksys WRT160N V3 router (Living Room) to my cable modem but the wifi does not reach certain spots in the house where its necessary.  If I buy a Airport Extreme and place it in my bedroom and connect it with an ethernet cable that I have connected with my iMac will the airport extreme work as a wifi extender since wifi does not reach my room?

Yes, the AE can be simply put in bridge mode so it will become an AP and set the wireless to create a wireless network.. you can then use same name and same security as linksys.. this is called roaming network.

Although the apple instructions have two apple routers, any two wireless routers will work the same way.

  • Cable needed to connect airport extreme?

How do I connect airport extreme to older speakers which are connected to older receiver amp? Do I need USB to radio jack? Have Itunes on IMAC , os 10.4.11. I know I need to update os sy to 10.5. I have new Iphone. I want to use remote app to send music to speakers.

There is not an audio port on the AirPort Extreme, so it cannot be used to stream audio per your question.
An AirPort Express will do the job.

  • Connect Macbook to TV coaxial input

My daughter has a Macbook and a small, older TV in her dorm room at college. Is there a way to connect the Macbook to the coaxial cable connection on the TV (the only input option available) in order to use the Macbook as a DVD player? And do it without spending more money than the TV is worth?

Actually, one of my two VCRs does not allow me to pass-through commercial DVD signals because of the Macrovision protection. So, going through a VCR may or may not work correctly. It might be safer to try something like an RF Modulator from Radio Shack:
    http://www.radioshack.com/entry.jsp?source=PE&entry=2103096
You'd still need the mini-DVI to video adapter, an s-video cable and some kind of audio "Y" adapter cable to split the headphone audio to RCA for the modulator.

  • What is the process for connecting ethernet.  Have ethernet cable connected to stereo received for internet radio and Blue Ray. However Network System Preferences indicates ethernet not connected and has red dot to left.  Note Airport wireless is working.

What is the process for connecting airport extreme ethernet?  I have ethernet cables connected to stereo receiver for internet radio and another to blue ray player.  The system preference network indicates "ethernet not connected" with red dot to left of this message.  The airport wireless works and has green dot to left of it.  The stereo receiver and blue ray player do not respond and give message not connect to internet.  Thank you.  /  cfpirate

It worked for me finally. I took out the DNS numbers in airport admin utility, and restarted the airport express. I do not remember putting the DNS numbers in, I wonder from where the airport express got those numbers.
    After restarting, it worked.
    Thanks!

  • I am linking 7 express's to an extreme via ethernet cables in very large estate. Is there a specific "backbone" you recommend for use in such an application? Thank you

I am linking 7 airport expresses to an airport extreme via ethernet cables in a large estate I maintain. Is there a specific product apple recommends to act as the "backbone" in such an application? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you

Is there a specific product apple recommends to act as the "backbone" in such an application
Apple does not recommend a specific product in this regard.
In general, you would connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Exteme to a Gigabit Ethernet switch, then connect as many Ethernet cable runs as you want to use to remote locations around the house.
Ethernet switches come in 5-port, 8-port, 16-port etc versions, so choose according to your needs.
I recommend Netgear and Cisco switches, but I am sure that there are other good products from which to choose.
Be sure to run CAT6 Ethernet cable to allow for the faster speeds coming in the next decade or so.

  • Using iPod Hi-Fi with Digital Audio (Coaxial) Cable

I have a Bandridge Digital Optical & Coaxial Audio Switch Box which allows me to connect multiple devices to output sound through my ipod hifi via digital optical or digital coaxial cable(it actually converts from optical to coaxial as well). The problem is all devices connect perfectly through the optical ports on the switch box however my PC only has a digital(S/PDIF) coaxial port so I use a digital coaxial cable for this but no sound is output through my ipod hifi? Can the ipod hifi output sound from a digital coaxial source?

With what you currently have it is impossible to do what you want.
    However, take a look at http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/ .
I have seen many plaudits for this on the boards, but have no experience with it whatsoever!

  • Wifi connection AirPort Extreme with IP-camera

I can't establish wifi connection Airport Extreme with IP-camera. At the same time cable connection is fine, but wifi not.
    Please, give me an advise.

You need to create a wireless network on the AirPort Extreme, and then you probably will want to assign a compatible static LAN IP address to the camera so that you can port-forward from the router to the camera.

  • Extend my Extreme wifi via cable to my Express

    Hi,
I´ve tried to search for this here but haven´t got exacly what I need.
If you have an Extreme and an Express you can easy extend the network between them so it seems like there´s only one network. That´s what you want - one network, one SSID. The connected units connects to either the Extreme or the Express. Great!
But let´s say it too far between the Extreme and the Express that wifi isn´t good enough. I want to connect them with a Ethernet Cable. I want that but still use the same functions I get with the extended network I got with wifi. One SSID, one visible network but far away from each other. Can I do that??
If I cannot, what is the solution? I have a really big house and want one wifi in the whole house. Do I need one Express every 10 meter and connect them all in one long chain? How great will that be? How many can I connect in a chain?
    /Raymond

To start please check out the following Apple Support article. It's a bit outdated, but it should give you an idea on the number of methods available to you to extend the wireless range of your Apple Wi-Fi network.
Next, let us know which type: extended or roaming, do you prefer to go with and if you need any assistance with setting it up. Any of us here will be happy to help you if you get stuck.

  • Connect Which Extreme to the Modem?

I just bought a new Airport extreme.  My current wireless network is managed by an extreme that is +3 years old. Planning to use one of the extremes to extend my network on a different level of the house (not connected to a modem directly).  Does it matter (in terms of performance) whether I use the new extreme or the three year old extreme as the primary network connection (connected to the DSL modem)?

Does it matter (in terms of performance) whether I use the new extreme or the three year old extreme as the primary network connection (connected to the DSL modem)?
If your older AirPort Extreme has simultaneous dual band capability, then you can add the "new" AirPort Extreme and it will extend both bands from your "old" AirPort Extreme.
3+ years is about the time that Apple started shipping simultaneous dual band AirPort Extremes, so your "old" Extreme may...or may not...include this function.
If you are not sure, post back with the model number of your AirPort Extreme and we can check. The model number is found on the bottom of the AirPort Extreme.
If your "old" AirPort Extreme is not simultaneous dual band capable, and you want to take advantage of this capability, you will need to connect the "new" AirPort Extreme to your cable modem.

  • Express connecting to Extreme

I have just set up my new Airport Extreme and want to bridge it to my old airport express downstairs in the living room so that I can extend the range of my network and use airtunes on my stereo. Since, the express has a different name, is that going to be a problem? - I read something about that in the manual but am starting to get confused about the exact way to set this up. If someone could help me out on the best way to get this bridged network set up, I would appreciate it.

"Factory Reset" the AX Base Station(s)

(Note: To facilitate setting up the remote base station, place it in near proximity of the main base station during the set up phase.)
Temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility (in Manual Mode) to make the following settings:
    AirPort - Wireless tab
    - Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
    - Network Name: <existing AirPort Network Name>
    - Radio Mode: 802.11b/g compatible
    - Channel: 1
    - Wireless Security: None
    AirPort - WDS tab
    - WDS Mode: WDS remote
    - Allow wireless clients (enabled)
    - WDS Main: <MAC address of the Main Base Station>
    Internet - Internet Connection tab
    - Connect Using: AirPort (WDS)
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
    - Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)

  • Number of coaxial cable runs for TV and Internet

Hello,I currently have Xfinity internet into my home. A single coax cable runs into my home through the conduit that was installed when the home was built. If I were to add Xfinity TV service with 3 rooms total, could I do it without needing to run another coax cable and utilizing the existing run? Can 1 coaxial cable run service both TV and Internet? I want to avoid having to run another cable from the outside of the house. The way the conduit was run makes it very difficult to tap into and I want to avoid making a hole on the side of the house.

As a non-technical person, I have noticed that most responses to the question about cable and internet being carried through the same coaxial cable fail to mention that the coax cable to use should be RG-6 when connecting to a cable modem.  I think most technical folks assume that's the cable in use, but I noticed that my Xfinity coaxial internet connection cable (installed many years ago) was slightly different than the cable they used to go from the other outlets to the TV cable boxes.  Upon further research, I found that the TV coax was RG-59 and would not support the internet signal being transmitted to a cable modem, only the RG-6 would work.  RG-6 is not expensive, just slightly more than RG-59, but if you're trying to move a modem and wireless router to another room and it doesn't work, that's probably the problem.
