Connecting an HD monitor to intel iMac

Hi, I think this is a fairly simple question--I'm going to be editing some footage in HD and the director is planning on renting an HD monitor to use. What I need to know is what kind of cables I would need to get this system up and running. Is there some sort of mini-DVI to HDMI or something like that? Thanks.

Thank you for the info--I apologize, but I'm really new to HD. So let me just get this straight: there's no way for me to output an HD signal without third party hardware?
Also, am I correct in assuming those cards will not work in an iMac? (seeing as I can't see a way to get them into the computer)
Thanks again.

  • Using an imac G3 as second monitor for intel imac

I just purchased a 20 inch intel imac and was curious if I could use my old imac G3 as the second monitor.
I already have the DVI to VGA adapter to use in the mini DVI port on the intel imac. Is there an adapter that I can use to plug this cable into the VGA out on the back of my old G3 imac?
intel duo imac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The VGA port on your old iMac is output, not input,
so what you are suggesting wouldn't work.
To do it, you'd have to take apart the G3 and hack a
connection from the gfx card to the display to
work... probably more trouble than it's worth, given
the quality & res of the old g3 displays.
Thanks for the quick response. Looks like I will have to pick up a second monitor.

  • External 1080p LCD Monitor with Intel iMac

I have a 17" Intel iMAC. I would like to connect it to a new 40" 1080p LCD Monitor/TV. With the mini-DVI cable, and DVI to HDMI cable, will I be able to view 1920X1080 resolution on the external monitor? Will I be able to use both mirror and extended display modes? I am aware the internal graphic card can support up to 1920X1200 resolution.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions!
You should be able to see it in the full 1920 x 1080 resolution. You can use either mirrored or extended desktop, but not both at the same time. It is an "either/or" proposition.
Does this new display have a DVI port? I would use that if possible. I understand that HDMI is digital, but you will not get a better picture by using it over standard DVI. HDMI is DVI plus audio.

  • Old ibook connected to Airport extreme on Intel iMac looses internet.

For the third time in a year since I got my new iMac Intel Core Duo machine the wireless connection between it and my old 2001 ibook (with and external USB --afterthemac.com) wireless device has lost the internet connection for the ibook. I am using the iMac as a airport base station with my iBook and it has worked flawlessly for most of the time since Feb when I got my new iBook but this is now the third time (for no apparent obvious reason to me) that while the System Preferences for the USB wireless device show a 70-75 strength connection via airport my internet (entourage email, safari browser) and wireless printing are all dead.
The last two times it happened I did a permissions fix on the iBook (nothing happened) and then reinstalled the driver for the USB wireless dongle. And I got the internet and printing through the printer on my iMac back. This did not work this time. I am set to Automatic in my Network preferences and am using use DCHP and have an ip address and such that are dynamically assigned. -- that still shows.
I have also rebooted my iMac, stopped and restarted airport on my iMac "base station" (afer a minute) and still no internet but the system preferences still show a wireless connection. I have run out of ideas to connect and wonder what else I a missing but some sites I have looked talk about the mysterious loss of inernet (while wireless appears to be working fine).
What is really weird is I also tested a Zen-Cart-MySQL server running on my localnet of my iMac and I actually got a connection of sorts by my ibook (once) today. It displayed the text portion of my Zen-Cart test screen but no graphics -- did not work next time. So it appears I almost have a connection of sorts with my iMac from my iBook but definately not an internet connection.
One final note, my new Intel iMac is connected to my cable modem via an old Netgear router (which is working fine for the iMac). I do not suspect there is any reason for this to be the problem since the ibook is using the shared connection of the iMac. But thought I would mention.
The ibook as I mentioned is the old 2001 dual USB model (white) it has only about 400 MB ram, a 10GB HD (but works great for email and web browsing for my wife). It has OS X 10.4.4, I have not bothered upgrading it any further because the HD has only about 2 GB of space free and other than this now third time of losing the internet connection it has worked fine and I hate to mess up this email/web machine my wife uses.
So if anyone has ideas of where I can go next to troubleshoot I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

Ok appears I solved my problem but not sure why.
While I was posting this around I stumbled on a solution so my question is why. I read somehwere about rebooting the router even thoug it is connected to the iMac and my internet works fine there. Well I rebooted that and the internet for my ibook came back instantly. So since the ibook is sharing the imac connection to my cable modem via rouer using the airport on the iMac why would the router block my iBook and not iMac that is directly wired to the old router (it is not a wireless router)
I want to learn why this now works so I can deal with it more effectively in future.
    Thanks,

  • Is it possible to connect 2 Samsung monitors to an imac 27"

Is it possible to connect 2 Samsung monitors with a resolution of 1920x1080 to a new imac 27" with two thunderbolt connectors (per mini displayport to dvi or mdp to hdmi cable)? So that there is the full resolution on all three (Mac + two Samsung) monitors? And if its possible what do I need to do so?
    Thanks for the help

I have no ThunderBolt iMac (mine is a 2009) nor one or two of these Samsung Displays.
So I can't say or guarantee that the combination will work.
Some displays simply don't work with Macs for no apparent reason.
Best would be to take your MacBook Pro into the store where you want to buy the Samsung displays and ask for a test.

  • Connecting a USBSerial GPS to Intel iMac

Has anyone been able to connect their Garmin GPS to their Intel iMac? The drivers I was using for my USB Serial cable no longer work, and I want to find a cable that does and purchase it.
If your does work can you give me a link to your drivers so I can see if my cable can use it?
    Thank You
    Guy

I have a Keyspan USB to serial adapter and Keyspan has already made available a beta version of their Universal driver for these adapters. Their website suggests the final version will be ready sometime in February.
I am using the excellent MacGPS Pro software, and that is promised to be available as a Universal Binary too.
I haven't actually tried connecting my Garmin 12XL to my Intel iMAC yet to confirm this works, thinking I can wait a bit longer for Keyspan's final release of their driver.

  • Connecting an old monitor to an iMac G5

I want to use an older Apple Color Display (1992; Serial #SG240LOCE04) as a second monitor with my G5 iMac. The old connector uses 15 pins in two rows of 7 and 8, repectively. The adaptor I bought from Apple on-line has the 15 pins but in three rows of 5 each. The tech help chat suggests I use an "s-video VGA display adaptor" and that such a thing is available from Apple, but I can't find it at the Store. Any suggestions, friends?

  • Need Help Connecting Logitech Z560 to New Intel Imac

I am a newly converted PC user. Like most of us, I am amazed by my new Imac.
I have a Logitech 4.1 z560 speaker setup that I would try to use with the Imac, if possible. My problem is that the connection from the speaker "control center" is actually two 3.5" mini phono jacks. Since there is only one audio output on the back of the Imac, I cannot figure out how to make this work. I can plug in just one of the connections, but I only get stereo sound coming from the front two speakers. Here is a link to the manual for the Logitech speakers:
    http://logitech-viva.navisite.net/web/ftp/pub/pdf/speakers/z560.pdf
The connections I am referring to are numbered "4" in the diagram - described as "Audio input cable to PC - green & black plugs". I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi wextasy: I have a set of Logitech speakers similar to those, and they work quite well. The manual says, with a 2 Channel Sound system (iMac), you plug the Green plug into the output jack, and enable "M3D" to get best sound. It does a pretty good job of simulating 4 channel sound. The other "black plug" is unused in this situation.
    Happy listening

  • Connecting 3rd Party Monitor to iMac 2.8 Intel Core i7 27"

Hi Hope somone maybe able to answer this question?
I would like to connect my Dell monitor to my iMac as a 2nd screen, it has VGA, HDMI, & DVI ports. What would be the best way, can I simply purchase a mini-display port > DVI or VGA adapter or would I require a Dual Link Adapter?
    Thanks in advance
    Mike

A mini display port cable to either HDMI, VGA or DVI would be fine. The best way to to purchase is to buy it directly from Apple that way you know you are getting a high quality cable that has been well tested.
    BTW, your manual says:
One or two Thunderbolt ports (high-speed data, video, and audio)
Connect Thunderbolt-compatible devices for high-speed data transfer, or connectan external display that uses Mini DisplayPort. You can purchase adapters to connectdisplays that use DVI, HDMI, or VGA. The 21.5-inch iMac has one Thunderbolt portand 27-inch iMacs have two.

  • Connect my HD Monitor to iMac ?

I want to connect my HD monitor to my iMac, I have used a mini display to HMMI lead I got from ebay but with little success?
I found the signal from my mac to my monitor very intermittent some times it works but most times Not. I found that when my monitor woke up it would find my mac but it I select the HDMI connection from the list it wouldnt?
Whats the best way to get this to work?

i read that you need a mini-DVI to dvi adaptor then a DVI to HDMI adaptor. I also am trying to decide which way to go. I was going to try just the mini-dvi to hdmi but if you say it doesnt work then maybe I'll try this other way.

  • How do I use my Intel iMac to see the screen on my old G5

The screen on my old G5 is fading fast and I would like to connect it to my newer Intel iMac and use it's screen to be able to see what i'm doing. Is there a way to do that?

Fortunately I was just able to make out the Screen Sharing check box on my older Mac. As soon as I checked it and opened the file on the newer Mac there was the screen. Perfect. Thanks so much.

  • Airport chip in Intel iMac

I am about to purchase an Intel Imac but have a concern about the new Airport chip in these systems. Previous chips were Broadcomm and now the Intel systems have Atheros chips (as per ArsTechnica). On my PowerBook G4 and iMac G5 with Comcast broadband it regularly tests at 6,000+kbps download. I also have a IBM ThinkPad T42p with the Atheros chip and the same Comcast test (at DSLReports.com) tests at 2,300kbps. All tested through Airport Express routers (Broadcomm chips).
Has anyone with Comcast or comparable broadband connections tested with their new Intel iMac?
All responses appreciated as I do not wish to duplicate my ThinkPad Atheros chip experinece with the new iMac.

  • Epson Stylus Photo R1800: successful Firewire install on Intel iMac?

Has anyone been able to succesfully install the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 on an Intel iMac using the Firewire connection?
After installing the Intel drivers from the Epson website, if I connect the printer via the USB cable the printer and associated driver show up in the Printer Setup Utility just fine. But if I connect the printer via the Firewire cable I just see a printer named "E" in the printer setup utility and no R1800 driver at all.
Epson support just keeps instructing me to uninstall and reinstall the driver.
I've hunted around in the discussions here and have noticed some people having trouble with this particular printer, but I've been unable to establish whether anyone has been succesful with the Intel iMac/Firewire combination.
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I am printing with a firewire connection. I have an intel iMac. Prior to buying the R1800, I checked out Epson's site for new intel printer drivers. A new update has been posted with an alert about the bundled software that comes with the R1800-don't install it! And if it was installed there's an uninstall walk through. The software did not come anywhere near my new imac. I downloaded the new software and I am printing with a firewire connection. I have one issue with the download. I can't print CDs because the application is on the original software cd. I contacted Epson and asked if I could install just the CD print software and not the printer driver. I will be waiting for an answer. I installed the software on a powerPC imac tiger. The printer is firewire connected and there are no printing problems, I can even print CD labels.
    I will post epson's response.

  • Periodic iChat audio dropouts over Airport on Intel iMac

When chatting with iChat, an audio dropout occurs exactly every 5 minutes on my new Intel iMac. iChat's Connection Doctor shows total loss of receive audio signal quality (and a halving of the receive bit rate) for about 5-10 seconds. Then normal operation resumes for 5 minutes and the problem repeats. This only occurs while using iChat over Airport. I can also force this audio dropout behavior at any time by clicking on the Airport status icon on the menubar. I wonder if others are having this problem or is this an isolated problem with my computer?
It took me a while to recognize that this wasn't a network problem causing occasional audio dropouts. My wireless D-Link router isn't the culprit as my G4 iMac and G3 laptop don't exhibit the problem through the router. Also, when connecting from the Intel iMac to any of the other nearby Macs using a computer to computer Bonjour wireless connection (thus eliminating the router) the dropouts do occur. After connecting, the dropout always occurs at a random time between 0 and 5 minutes but thereafter it occurs at exactly 5 minute intervals. If I click on the Airport status icon to force the audio dropout, the next dropout will occur 5 minutes later.
I also have a new Intel Mac Mini which doesn't exhibit the periodic audio dropout problem but does have a similar audio dropout whenever I click on the Airport status icon. The dropout lasts longer on the Mini - about 15 seconds average before the audio signal quality fully recovers. Because the periodic dropout doesn't happen on the Mini, it isn't really an operational problem, but it is instructive to note that only the Intel Macs exhibit this particular behavior.
In troubleshooting the iMac, I have turned off all timing related items that I can think of including, Mail (check manually), Set Date and Time Automatically (OFF), all sleep, hard drive and screen timers OFF, all iCal reminders OFF, etc. I have also turned all Dashboard Widgets OFF, corrected permissions, tried a different user ID, reset the NVRAM and SMC. I have even tried setting the iChat app to open as a Rosetta app . Nothing has solved this problem yet.
The iMac is a dual core 20" with 1.5 GB of RAM and the Mini is a dual core with 512 MB of RAM. Both are running Tiger 10.4.5 Wireless signal level in all tests is 100 percent.
    Thanks for any help.
    Bill

OK, I have my Intel iMac connected to the Internet via an Ethernet converter. What this means is that the iMac is connected via Ethernet cable to the Ethernet converter, which, in turn, communicates wirelessly with a wireless router.
This seems to clearly solve the wireless connection audio issue as the Intel iMac thinks it has only an Ethernet connection. There is no audio dropout after five minutes or so, but there may be other Mac to Mac connection issues related to Intel Macs.
I'm going to run with this connection for awhile to see if there are other problems, but this seems to be a good workaround for the moment. I'm using a Buffalo Technology WLI-TX4-G54HP Ethernet converter, which costs about $60 USD at most online vendors in the US.
Although $60 may seem like a lot of money to spend on an Apple-created problem, using the Buffalo high power device is almost surely going to provide significantly better wireless range. This increased range advantage may be enough to offset a large part or all of the $60 cost.
