Connecting an iBook and an iMac

Stupid question but I am afraid one I must ask. I am planning to get an iMac and iBook for my graphics degree, and want to be able to transfer work and files over quickly and with the minimum of ease. I have been recommended a Firewire cable or Ethernet cable, probably the former one for me. Can someone provide more info on how it would all work and pos the name of one I should get in the Apple store?
Thank you all again for all your help!

I am planning to get an iMac and iBook for my graphics degree, and want to be able to transfer work and files over quickly and with the minimum of ease.
Partly, I think, it depends on how big the files are. For smallish files (= MB rather than GB in size) you can use a Flash "memory stick" (the capacity varies according to price) for straightforward transfers. Or you can use Airport Express via your wireless network. The advantage of both of these methods is that you don't have to shut down one of the two computers first, as you do when using FireWire Target Disk mode.
But FW T-Disk mode is better (in my opinion) for larger-scale data transfers (= GB rather than MB in size). I use all three methods, according to circumstances.
By the way, I noticed that you say you want to do this with the "minimum of ease". Perhaps the minimum of fuss and the maximum of ease?

  • Headless g4, ibook and intel imac (2.33ghz) issue

Ok so I have a small network hooked up through an ethernet switch. I have my iMac running ARD 3.2 and it works perfectly with my ibook both through ethernet and airport. When I plug my headless g4 quicksilver into the ethernet swtich I get nothing. Even using a fixed IP address and searching for it on ARD wont allow me to connect and control it. I've tried attaching a VGA cable and the VGA to mini DV adapter to my ibook and using that as the G4's "monitor" and nothing still. When i boot from the g4 disk on my ibook, I cant see any of the SATA drives hooked up to the SATA card inside and i am at a complete loss of what to do. I really need to be able to access those hard drives and do not have a monitor with which to set up the g4 tower. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've tried attaching a VGA cable and the VGA to mini DV adapter to my ibook and using that as the G4's "monitor" and nothing still.
That won't work. The video port on your iBook is output only, for using an external monitor with the iBook. You cannot use that port to use the iBook's screen with another computer.
When i boot from the g4 disk on my ibook, I cant see any of the SATA drives hooked up to the SATA card inside
I presume you mean via Firewire Target Disk Mode? If so, that won't work with drives connected to an any PCI card. Target Disk Mode on a G4 will only show the primary ATA hard drive connected to the motherboard's ATA bus.
As to ARD, I presume that you are certain that the ARD client on the G4 is active and appropriately set up? If so, I've read reports of difficulties observing and controlling some systems when they don't have a monitor connected, at least to get things set up and working. So it's quite possible that you'll need to borrow a monitor for the G4, at least temporarily, to get everything set up and working, particularly if you haven't or aren't certain you have set up the ARD client.

  • Connecting a G4 and an iMac by airport express

I am trying to connect my iMac and my G4 wireless. I cannot use an Airport card on my G4 due to a damaged connector pin on the main board, so I bought an Airport Express Base Station, which I connect to my G4 using the Ethernet port. According to the sales people this should allow me to set up an airport network and connect to my iMac.
Using the Airport Admin Utility, and selecting "Other" as base station, an IP address is provided and the default password recognized, but an error occurs when reading the configuration of the base station.
My iMac does not find the base station either, using Airport.
I have reset the base station to factory defaults without any success,
Any suggestions what I am doing wrong?
    Greg

You really need a wireless router with ethernet ports to connect to the cable modem to do what you want to do.
The iMac would continue to connect using ethernet from the router and the G4 could as well if you run an ethernet cable from the router to the G4.
Alternately, if you do not want to run the ethernet cable to connect the G4, you may be able to use your AirPort Express and configure it to "join" the wireless network that the wireless router was creating. If the router is compatible with what Apple calls ProxySTA, you can enable the ethernet port on the Airport Express to furnish an ethernet signal to the G4.
But, you must have an AirPort Express"n" to activate this feature and there is really no way to know in advance if it will work correctly. Several product reviews have mentioned that it should be compatible with virtually any wireless network, but that would be impossible to verify.

  • Connecting "older" pc and new iMac desktop via Airport extreme

Please bear with me...I am a Mac novice. My husband and I just purchased our first mac (iMac 20" desktop)and had it up and running in 2 minutes. We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth (whose signal it is remains a mystery). We purchased the airport extreme to access the internet via our Dell's 2 y/o cable modem (comcast Motorola Surfboard)before we realized we had a hotspot in our house. We also want to use the printer that is connected to our pc with our mac. I cannot get the airport configured at all...I keep getting error messages. The first one that appears says that my wireless interface is not enabled. I went to My Network Places and set up the wirless network using a USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one appeared in the list of devices detected when I reconnected the flashdrive to my pc. I've tried rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both the modem and the aiport from the power supply. Should I reset the airport? Help!!
    iMac 20" desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth
(whose signal it is remains a mystery).
This is very likely to be a neighbour's wireless or Airport network (not Bluetooth).
    I cannot get the
airport configured at all...I keep getting error
    messages.
Don't use the PC to configure the Airport Extreme Base Station, use the iMac, it will be easier.
The first one that appears says that my
    wireless interface is not enabled.
You are probably trying to use the Airport Assistant, this will only work on a wireless computer, in order to configure an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from a wired PC, you need to connect to the AEBS via the LAN port and then use the Airport Admin Utility.
Connecting a XP PC to a Airport Network via the LAN port of the AEBS
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1007.html
However still configure the AEBS via the iMac.
    I went to My
Network Places and set up the wirless network using a
USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's
USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one
appeared in the list of devices detected when I
reconnected the flashdrive to my pc.
That Microsoft wireless process only works with other Windows PCs, it won't work with a Mac or the AEBS.
    I've tried
rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both
the modem and the aiport from the power supply.
Try using the Mac to configure the Airport network using the Assistant.
    Should I reset the airport?
You may need to, but sounds like you haven't managed to configure it, so it will still be in the default state.
We also want to use the printer that is
connected to our pc with our mac.

  • Lost Airport internet connection between G5 and G3 iMacs

I hope you don't mind, I posted the following in internet etc. but not much traffic there...
I'm doing this from memory as not in front of either iMac. I have until now had a simple wireless internet connection as follows: G5 iMac connected by ethernet to broadband supplier which shares internet connection via Airport. This is picked up by an ethernet wireless router connected to my G3.
This has stopped working over the weekend. G3 had an amber light in network status (static DHCP address or similar) but that has now gone to green and 'connected to the internet' etc.
The internet sharing control on the G5 has full signal strength but seems to have difficulty checking status - revolving petal thingy below signal strength. But occasionally does settle on 'status fine' or similar.
Now the G3 fails to connect to the internet, G5 works just fine.
No settings have been knowlingly changed and all seem to be correct. There was a power failure for a couple of hours last week, don't know if this is related.
Thank you very much for your help.

Darrin, just back from Montreal and glad to see that great minds think alike. Often, in fact usually, problems with airport connections can be solved by rebooting the router/airport. For no apparent reason, they often go all funny, and this usually takes care of the problem,
anyway, glad you are back up and running,
    Miriam

  • Connect my G4 and my iMac

    Hello,
I have 32Gb of iMovie files in my G4 that I would like to transfer to my iMac.
Can I connect the 2 together and eventually use the G4 as hard drive and just cut and paste these files in the iMac?
    Thanks for your help.
    Blerodocus

Connect them with a FireWire cable, start up the G4 with the T key held down, and drag the files over in the Finder. The Finder doesn't allow files to be cut, but can copy and paste them.

  • Intermittent connection between iBook and Airport Extreme Base Station

I have a friend with an iBook set up with the Airport Extreme system, they also have a Denon stereo that it is playing through. However, when the music is playing, it keeps cutting out every 5-10 seconds and is intermittent. On other occasions, when the router & base station is left switched on, it plays fine. Does anyone have a reason for this intermittent playing, and a possible solution? Many thanks,

Check out this Apple article to see if it will help.

  • Simple way of transferring files beween iBook and iMac?

So far, I have burned CDs to transfer files back and forth between the two machines. I also am considering using a portable back up drive.
I'd prefer a simple transfer of files between the machines via fire wire cable!
However, I have been discouraged so far to explore the "networking" solutions further, because of the (for me) complicated protocol and addressing issues in the networking preference panel....
A simple solution would make me happy!
    Thanks,
    PP

If you boot the iBook into FireWire target disk mode it will act as an external FireWire drive.
Then all you need to do is connect the iBook and iMac with a 6 pin to 6 pin FireWire cable. The iBook will appear on the iMac's desktop as a hard drive. You can then easily drag and drop files between the 2 machines.

  • HELP  Old iBook and airport

I have an old (500 MHz PowerPC G3; 384 MB SDRAM) that can only go as far as OS 10.4.11. I use verizon dsl router/modem with airport capabilities to connect to the internet. My other computer is an iMac running 10.6.4. I've never had a problem connecting the iMac with airport using the verizon Actiontek GT704-WG and until last month did not have a problem connecting my lil old iBook the same way (using WEP). Now I can no longer connect my iBook with airport (iMac is fine). The verizon Mac "techs" are fairly clueless in dealing with older Macs.
    Can't afford a new laptop.
Anyone know what I can do (use WPA?) as far as settings go. Is my processor/RAM/OS the prob? Can't think why as it was it working before but something outside of my equipment seems to have changed which now will not allow my iBook airport access.
    Any suggestions?

Does the iBook work if you turn off encryption?
Does the iBook work with other wireless networks (such as coffee shops)?
Once in a great while an original AirPort Card fails. (It happened to me once.) If you could check it out with another network to make sure it is something in your home connection at fault, it would eliminate the possibility that the AirPort Card has failed.

  • Connecting 9.2.2 iBook G3 to iMac with 10.4.9

I've finally determined (tech support docs on 10.3.9 and online help do NOT make this simple to determine) that AFP ain't supported on 10.4.
    Here is my current problem:
Open Public folder on iMac (10.4.9, Personal File Sharing enabled) using Chooser and the network icon on the iBook’s Desktop. File Sharing (or is it AppleTalk) Control Panel on the iBook has the "Applehare over TCP/IP" option enabled).
    1. Open finder window to OS X drop box
    2. Click and drag file to open window
    3. Copying starts and progress dialog comes up
    4. First error alert: The File Service's Connection Has Unexpectedly Closed Down
    5. Dismiss that dialog and
    6. "The Selected Files Could Not Be Copied Because the Server Is No Longer Connected."
I then installed Shareway IP Personal, latest version.
Restart iBook. I get the same error and error messages.
During all this time, a connection from iBook to a Blue and White running 10.3.9 remains connected and usable, as does the file sharing connection to an OS 9.2.2 Blue and White.
I'm a very savvy pre-OS X Mac user and a reasonably savvy OS X user, though simple file sharing in the house with OS X has become an exercise in bafflement.
The iBook is using an AirPort card through an Asante Wireless VPN Security Router, which is connected to my IP provider. All other Macs are wired.

Yeah, 10.4.9 broke Appletalk even further than 10.4.0 did!
I've been able, (using the old Shareway), to download either way, but not upload either way over a few KB.
10.4.9 copies from my OS9.2.2 machine to itself fine. OS9.2.2 copies from the 10.4.9 machine fine, but trying to put it either way will get that "no longer connected", and most of the time then freeze one or both machines until I reboot the OS9.2.2 machine.

  • Imac not connecting to ibook

My home network is set up so that my iMac is wired to the router and the iBook is connected via WiFi to the router.
When I try to connect to the iBook from the iMac, I get a notice that the server cannot connect. However, when I connect to the iMac from the iBook I have no problem. Does anyone have an idea why I cannot connect to the iBook from the iMac.
    Thanks for any help

Well, I thought I would check back to let you all know I solved the problem. It turned out that I needed a firmware upgrade for my router. Now all my computers are one happy family and talking to one another.

  • One upgrade possible for Ibook and Imac?

    Hi there,
lots of great info on the site and very helpful just with what I've found.
Could not find anything that tells me what version of OSX I could possibly upgrade to that would help both my machines.
I need to upgrade to 10.5 for blackberry app to work. Not sure if I can find and use a version of 10.5 that will allow me to updgrade both my 10.3.x Ibook G3 AND my Imac (Intel) running 10.4.11. I do realize that Ibook will not be able to run Leopard.
    Any thoughts would be welcome.
In addition, I've been using an internet stick (no DSL in the area) as my connection on my Imac but relegated the Ibook to backup duty for wordprocessing since I can't connect the stick to it. I've tried to set up a network that would allow me to have the Ibook share the Imac connection, but to no avail. If anyone has experience with doing this, that would help also.
    Thanks,

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The combined update for Mac OS X 10.3 (to 10.3.9) for the iBook can be found at this link:
    http://www.apple.com/support/panther/
Explanation: Although the iBook G3 (Dual USB) is technically capable of running Mac OS X 10.4, some people (myself included) believe that Mac OS X 10.3.9 is the optimal version of the OS to run on the iBook. My reasoning on the matter is due to the limited logic board RAM on the iBook G3 (Dual USB). Panther (10.3) is able to run on the logic board RAM in most iBooks G3 (Dual USB) (128 MB on the vast majority of them), while Tiger (10.4) requires 256 MB of RAM to run. So if you should ever have a RAM problem while running Tiger, you can't test whether that is the problem by removing the extra RAM module.
If you mean you'd like a single upgrade path for both computers, I'm afraid that's not possible.
Are you running a wireless connection for the internet? Is the iBook equipped with an original AirPort Card? I'm not certain what an "internet stick" is, exactly? With no DSL in your area, are you on dial-up, then?
