Connecting an old monitor to an iMac G5

I want to use an older Apple Color Display (1992; Serial #SG240LOCE04) as a second monitor with my G5 iMac. The old connector uses 15 pins in two rows of 7 and 8, repectively. The adaptor I bought from Apple on-line has the 15 pins but in three rows of 5 each. The tech help chat suggests I use an "s-video VGA display adaptor" and that such a thing is available from Apple, but I can't find it at the Store. Any suggestions, friends?

Thank you for the info--I apologize, but I'm really new to HD. So let me just get this straight: there's no way for me to output an HD signal without third party hardware?
Also, am I correct in assuming those cards will not work in an iMac? (seeing as I can't see a way to get them into the computer)
Thanks again.

  • Is it possible to connect 2 Samsung monitors to an imac 27"

Is it possible to connect 2 Samsung monitors with a resolution of 1920x1080 to a new imac 27" with two thunderbolt connectors (per mini displayport to dvi or mdp to hdmi cable)? So that there is the full resolution on all three (Mac + two Samsung) monitors? And if its possible what do I need to do so?
    Thanks for the help

I have no ThunderBolt iMac (mine is a 2009) nor one or two of these Samsung Displays.
So I can't say or guarantee that the combination will work.
Some displays simply don't work with Macs for no apparent reason.
Best would be to take your MacBook Pro into the store where you want to buy the Samsung displays and ask for a test.

  • Connect my old hard drive to iMac?

Hi, my hard drive gave up on me and had to be replaced, and now I want to try connect the old hard drive to my iMac to try access files from it. I have connected it to my iMac via a SATA to USB cable, the light on the SATA cable comes on (which indicates it is connecting), yet it doesn't appear on my desktop as an external or in Disk Utility.
Does anyone know how i get it to appear so I can attempt to access it?
The hard drive was damaged, but I was told by the repair specialist it still should connect in this way (he had it connected in his iMac).
I have ensured hard and external disks are shown on the desktop in Finder preferences. I'm on an iMac late 2009, OS Lion 10.7.4.
    Thanks

I'm unfamiliar with the cable  you mention. If the shop said it would work and you got it from them I would recommend a trip (or at least a call) to the shop for clarification.
If you look at the specs for the cable I linked to (and look at the user manual)  you'll see there is a power supply to power the drive. I really don't see how a cable that simply plugs into the drive and the USB port could power the drive.
If you look at the OWC site you'll see in addition to the cable drive enclosures. They have fairly good information at the site so it might be a good idea to poke around there to get a feel of the different solutions to your problem
If you're only looking to try to get data off the drive and once you get the data off you'll discard the drive then the cable is a good solution. If you're thinking of keeping the drive then an enclosure would be the way to go.
But keep in mind if the drive needed to be changed there is a possibility that it is just dead or that the data won't be readable. If you  do manage to get access to the drive make sure you copy off any data that is important to you and that you are looking to keep.

  • Connecting an HD monitor to intel iMac

Hi, I think this is a fairly simple question--I'm going to be editing some footage in HD and the director is planning on renting an HD monitor to use. What I need to know is what kind of cables I would need to get this system up and running. Is there some sort of mini-DVI to HDMI or something like that? Thanks.

  • Connecting 3rd Party Monitor to iMac 2.8 Intel Core i7 27"

Hi Hope somone maybe able to answer this question?
I would like to connect my Dell monitor to my iMac as a 2nd screen, it has VGA, HDMI, & DVI ports. What would be the best way, can I simply purchase a mini-display port > DVI or VGA adapter or would I require a Dual Link Adapter?
    Thanks in advance
    Mike

A mini display port cable to either HDMI, VGA or DVI would be fine. The best way to to purchase is to buy it directly from Apple that way you know you are getting a high quality cable that has been well tested.
    BTW, your manual says:
One or two Thunderbolt ports (high-speed data, video, and audio)
Connect Thunderbolt-compatible devices for high-speed data transfer, or connectan external display that uses Mini DisplayPort. You can purchase adapters to connectdisplays that use DVI, HDMI, or VGA. The 21.5-inch iMac has one Thunderbolt portand 27-inch iMacs have two.

  • Connect my HD Monitor to iMac ?

I want to connect my HD monitor to my iMac, I have used a mini display to HMMI lead I got from ebay but with little success?
I found the signal from my mac to my monitor very intermittent some times it works but most times Not. I found that when my monitor woke up it would find my mac but it I select the HDMI connection from the list it wouldnt?
Whats the best way to get this to work?

i read that you need a mini-DVI to dvi adaptor then a DVI to HDMI adaptor. I also am trying to decide which way to go. I was going to try just the mini-dvi to hdmi but if you say it doesnt work then maybe I'll try this other way.

  • How can I connect an external monitor to the new 27 inch iMac?

I have an old PC monitor that I want to connect to my new 27 inch iMac, it's the latest edition, the one that doesn't have any mini display ports.
All I have are four USB 2.0 ports and two Thunderbolt ports. No mini display port of any kind. So is there an adapter for me? My old monitor can use either VGA or HDMI and I'm not really fussed which one I use. A link would be most helpful, surley that are more people with the same problem.

If the monitor supports vga and hdmi you probably what to use the digital hdmi over the analog vga.  You need a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter.  For this application mini-displayport will work when plugged into a thunderbolt connection (TB is sort of a superset of mini-displayport, the plugs and sockets are physically compatible).
Here's examples of each kind of adapter:
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt to VGA Adapter

  • Connecting two external monitors to 21.5" iMac

I have a 21.5" iMac at work. I also have two older vga/dvi monitors that are not getting any use at home. Is there a way I could hook these two monitors to my iMac desktop at home even though I only have one mini-display out on the back.
    Back of the computer is 4 usb 2.0, 1 Firewire 800, 1 Mini-display
I would like to be able to operate each monitor as extended desktops (to the right and left of the iMac) I found a converter box, but I am looking for something a little cheaper. Would getting dual vga to dvi then a dvi to mini display work or is there an adapter that goes from mini diaplay directly to dual dvi or vga?

Rudegar I hate to say this but you are wrong, I have successfully connected 2 20 inch monitors to my 21.5 inch imac using a usb to vga converter and the thunderbolt to vga addapter, the usb to vga adapter works but still is not as fast as the thuderbolt to vga cable. So if you are planning to use the 2 extra monitors for an enlarged gaming screen, your out of luck but for actually doing work it works perfectly.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:

  • Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme with updates thru Snow Leopard but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA.

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme network, run from a intel iMac with updates thru Mavericks but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA and can't connect to Time Capsule.  Airport Extreme Base was controllable from either computer up through Snow Leopard (I didn't do any of the Lion upgrades).  Then when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost the ability to use Airport Utility with this hardware on the Sunflower but could still connect wirelessly to network without any problems.  But now with the Time Capsule upgrade the Sunflower is blocked from network by a dialogue that requests ony WEP password, not WPA pwd used by Time Capsule.  Neither can I use the old airport extreme base to extend the time capsule network since I can't input the correct password/encryption approach to join it.  Is there a work around?  Would a newer but old Airport Express be able to extend network to Sunflower?  Or maybe a third party wireless (such as Netgear, Dlink, etc) that has browser type control rather than special utility?
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this--so is it true now that the only access control is via WPA2 pwd now (which appears to be the encryption pwd and not the time capsule pwd)?

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?
I can’t claim to completely grasp the issue(s) you’re describing, but the underlying problem is presumably your iMac’s obsolete AirPort card. Whatever the case, an obvious (if not particularly helpful) answer to your stated question would be to connect your iMac with an ethernet cable, using powerline adapters as an alternative if you don’t want to have wire running all over the place.
My still fully functional clamshell iBook, with an original AirPort card, connects wirelessly to my 4th Generation TC network by means of a cheap 802.11b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. This might be an option for you too.
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this
When you edit your TC's settings the access controls appear under the Network tab, don't they?

  • Connecting a second monitor to imac?

I have two 20" Mac displays. I want to connect one display to a new iMac I just purchased. How can I do this? They worked great with the G5 I had.

If these are external displays you can connect via:
MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter OR
    MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter
You need to look and see what inputs the old displays have, if they have either VGA, DVI, or HDMI (I seriously doubt they'd have that) then you need one the above adapters. These are available from your local AppleStore, online Apple Store, or Apple Reseller.

  • Connecting a Iiyama 27' monitor to an iMac

After checking with the supplier that it would work with my very recent iMac (OS 10.9, 4 Gb graphic card) , I bought a Iiyama 27 inches monitor with a 2560x1440 pixel resolution to use as a second monitor in dual mode.
I tried to connect this monitor to my iMac using 1st/ a minidisplay to DVI adapter and later, with a recommendation from Apple Care 2nd/ a minidisplay to HDMI Moshi adapter.
In both cases, I get a picture on the display, but I cannot get the full resolution. The monitor supplier (namely Pixmania.com) is hopeless, so I try the Apple community as there has to be a number of people who chose this Iiyama monitor as a companion to their iMac – not as shinny but substantially cheaper than the Apple display.
Question is therefore: how do I get this monitor to display at full resolution in a dual monitor config? What kind of cable / adapter do I need? Has anyone successfully tried it?
    Thanks

If the display has DisplayPort, use a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.
    <http://www.monoprice.com/Category?c_id=102&cp_id=10246>
To get full resolution with DVI, you need a DUAL-LINK DVI adapter.
