Connecting an older computer to my wireless router.

My wireless router is connected to my work computer which is in the same room as my own personal computer. I can hard wire the two together since they are only a few feet apart, but my older computer only has a phone line connection. Are there cables with a ethernet plug on one end and a phone line size plug on the other, or what do I have to do to hard wire these together. My older computer, which still works just fine for my personal needs does not have wireless capability so I was hoping somehow I could hard wire this to the router. Any help is much appreciated.

Also, does the older computer support USB?  (Don't laugh; there's a method to the suggestion!)  Even if, for some reason, there's no room to mount a wired or wireless network adapter inside the computer, there's nothing stopping you from using a USB network adapter (wired or wireless) to connect to the same computer.  Since there are USB wireless network adapters available (wireless-b, wireless-G, and wireless-N, as well as multi-protocol), do give serious consideration to having one or more around (if for no other reason than as spares); I'm looking to pick up one or two such USB adapters for my two-computer all-wired network (the router is a WRT54GS V.2, but may shortly be replaced with a WRT-310N for additional range and wired gigabit support).  I've had my GS since 2005, and I'm very happy with it.

  • Hp6700 Printer: can't connect to D-Link DI-514 Wireless Router when Broadcast SSID is set to NO.

HP6700 Printer:  can't connect to D-Link DI-514 Wireless Router when Router Broadcast SSID is set to NO. My MAC LapTop and HP LapTop both work with the SSID set to NO. If I change the Wireless Router to Broadcast SSID is YES, then the HP6700 Printer can connect to the Wireless Router. I setup the Printer telling it what the SSID and Password were, the same as both of my LapTops, but it never connects, unless I change the Router to broadcast the SSID. Help!

Did you try updating the firmware on the DI-514?
You can also try setting a static IP on the printer, then assign the printer to the static DHCP list in the router interface.
To give your printer a static IP address:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS. You can choose another external DNS if you wish.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you will have delete and re-add the printer on your Mac.

  • What are the settings for connecting to a Mac behind a wireless router?

I have a client with an iMac. His Mac connects to the internet through a wireless router which gets its signal from a cable modem. My Mac is running 10.6. The remote iMac is running 10.5.
How do I configure my Mac (Administrator) and the remote iMac so a connection can be made using Remote Desktop.
    Thanks!

In the AirPort Utility, I selected the Advanced tab, and then selected Port Mapping.
Q: What service do I choose from the drop-down menu? Also, where do I enter the two ports you mentioned? Public UDP Port(s)? Public TCP Port(s)? Private IP Address: Private UDPPort Private TCP Port?
    still confused, I guess. Thanks!

  • Need help hooking up my daughters computer on my wireless router.

I am totally new to the wireless world.  I just bought a lynksys Wireless-G WRT54G wireless router.  I hooked my new Dell XPS400 via the wired connection and my son's Dell inspiron notebook up via wireless.  My daughter just got back from Hong Kong with a Toshiba computer and it sees my wireless network but it is asking for different information than my son's computer did.  All I had to do with his was give the Key code and reboot the computer and he was able to get right on.  Her computer is asking for the "Network Name (SSID)", "Network Authentication" and "Data Encryption", none of which am I sure what it wants.  The only block calling for a key # is grayed out.
Is there anyone who might can give me some guidance on this?
    Thanks

Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old

I dont know how to connect my iphone to my wndr3400 Netgear wireless router. do i have to add the phone to my homegroup?

  • DSL Connection Very slow ONLY when using wireless router

My DSL connection was running super slow (approx 136 Kbs) - I disconnected the Linksys wireless router and plugged by DSL modem directly into the computer.  Then my internet speed increased to 1.4 Mbs (a 10 fold increase).
Any suggestions on how / why my speed drops so extensively when using the Linksys wireless routher (wrt45g).
    Thanks

Are you using the same test each time to measure the speed?
The reason I ask is that Windows usually reports its download speed in KB/sec (Kilobytes per second).  But most web (internet) speed tests report their speed in Mbps (Megabits per second.)
A 1.4 Mbps line will typically pass data at about 140KB/sec.
To help determine what kind of problem you are having, do the same speed test in 3 different ways:
    1)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
    3)  Connect one computer, wirelessly, to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
Report back your results, and also, please state what line speed you are paying for.  Once we have this, we will hopefully be able to help you.

  • Connecting Westell 6100G to Netgear n300 Wireless Router

I've just purchased a netgear n300 wireless router.   My question is would I defintely need to set the Westell 6100G modem to bridge mode?  After I do that I simply connect the wireless router to the modem and then the router to the computer via one of the ports?  After that is done would I need to do anything else?   Would I be asked for my verizon login and password in order to get connected?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's recommended to bridge your modem as the modem itself does have an integrated router, even though it only has one Network port to connect up with. You have to split it up using a switch if you wish to really use it as a wired router. The reason why you bridge is so that your router holds your Public IP address rather than the modem. This avoids a condition known as "Double NAT" which game consoles dislike, VPNs tend to be iffy with, and Port Forwarding becomes a pain to do as you have to do it twice.
Yes, Bridge the modem. As far as the Netgear is concerned, if your modem reports that it is using PPPoE, the Username and Password you will need to use will be the master login you use for your DSL account. In the Netgear, it will auto detect that you use PPPoE in most circumstances however, it won't automatically pull your username and password. In some cases it may just connect right up if Verizon still does OpenPPPoE. Otherwise, if you're using a Setup program that came with the router it should ask you for your username or password to connect up. If not, Netgear has changed their firmware around in recent years, but in most cases it is under the Basic Setup or "Internet" section of your router for adding in a PPPoE username and password. The best place to look for this would be the user guide for your router. It should detail how to set up your connection based on what you're using.

I never advise people to use there computer (Apple or Windows) as a router. Computers do not make good routers but they are good computers. Use your computer as a computer and get a cheap router to do your routing. If you use your computer as a router keep in mind that it must always be on in order for others to connect through it.

  • How do I connect my laptop to my Linksys wireless router through the internal wireless card?

I just purchased a gateway laptop and was trying to hook my Linksys wireless router up to it. Ive gotten it hooked up but only through the secondary device (that catches the signal)... I was wondering if there is anyway that I could make my internal wireless internet card a point or no? Can I only connect it to the USB network adapter or is there really a way to go COMPLETELY wireless? Thank you for your time...

Is your internal wireless card enabled? Go to device manager and make sure it is enabled.

  • Connecting a laptop PC to a wireless router on an iMac

I cannot get a laptop PC to connect to the internet through a Linksys wireless router I have connected to my iMac. It was working great for a while, but the network disappeared from the laptop's "available networks" box, and I've been trying for hours to get it to work again. The Mac help desk was of no help and said I had to call Linksys, however, I think it is how I have the network or sharing configured. I've changed so many thinks trying to get it to work, I have probably messed all the configurations up.
This can't be that hard. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Since you already have the iMac connected, via Ethernet, to the Linksys router, you'll want to disconnect the modem's USB connection to the iMac.
Which model Linksys to you have? If it has more than one Ethernet port, try connecting the PC to one of the Linksys's Ethernet ports and verify that you can get an Internet connection.

  • Win 2000 PC can't connect to a WEP enabled BEFW11S4 wireless router

    Hi,
I just set up my wireless router to use WEP with 124 bits encryption. However, when I installed the WUSB11 wireless adaptor on a windows 2000 PC, it couldn't connect to the router and get an IP address. If I do an "ipconfig", it shows the "Cable Disconnected" state and no ip address.
    Could any one help?
    thanks very much.

    Thanks for your advice.
However, I'm not sure where to enter the WEP key on a win2K PC. It doesn't ask for the key during the installation. In "Infrastructure mode", only SSID is required. In "Ad hoc mode", SSID and channel ID are required. But neither asks for the key.
When installed in "infrastructure mode", it shows as "cable not connected". But if installed in "Ad hoc mode", the network connection is enabled and it tries to get an ip address, however, it fails to get a valid IP address from the wireless router (192.168 range) and returns with a 169.254 address.
Seems that I missed a step somewhere to put the WEP key?
    many thanks.

  • Ipad connects with Airport Express, but not wireless router

I have a airport express that exends my network and is connected by an ethernet cable to the wireless router.  they are on opposite sides of the house from each other.  every other device i own has full bars wifi anywhere in the house.  but the ipad only seems to find the signal from the AE.
If i go in the bedroom with the wireless router, the signal drops to 1 bar.  if i unplug the AE along with all the other electronics for the TV/Receiver at night, the ipad loses the signal and cannot get a signal from the router, standing right next to it.  i have tried reset, hard reset, renew lease forgetting network, and all fails.  any ideas?
I have a Verizon Ultraline series 3 model A90-9100EM15-10 and the firmware is up to date.

You likely have your reason for extending your network in this manner, but it seems that the AE is not really extending your router's network, but creating its own separate network that then extends your internet connection. This can be confusing to devices if you are expecting that they will switch between the two of them automatically.
The iPad can only support one connect at a time. It sounds like you want it to be able to jump from the AE connection to a router connection on a whim when signal strength drops. I am not sure that the iPad's radio is that sophisticated. At best when the iPad looses a signal it could ask if you want to join any other network that it detects, especially if it has connected to that network in the past.
AFA the router, some routers don't like iOS devices and just won't connect. When you go to Settings/Wi-Fi does the iPad see the router's network? If the iPad sees the router network, try configuring a connection by hand.
Tap Other... and write the name of the router's network. Tap Security and select the type of security the router's network employs. Return to the previous pane and enter the password. Tap Join. If you can make the conection the iPad should remember this network in the future. Turn on Ask to Join Networks and hopefully when the iPad looses the AE signal in the future it will then ask you if you want to join the router's network.
