Connecting any speakers causes freeze

Bought one of the new (early-2009) 24" iMacs for work, 1TB HDD with Leopard 10.5.6 and Final Cut Express pre-installed. I connected a set of JBL speakers to it. Multiple programs (Itunes, IDVD, Safari) have difficulty loading. Once I disconnect the speakers, no issue at all. The speakers have their own power supply...I thought it was bizzare. Tried another set of speakers, same problem. Thoughts?

Tell me a little about your computer. I know you are running XP, but which Service Pack? Are you running any kind of Norton or Symantic products? What hardware are you running that uses USB? Have you updated any drivers recently?
I know, a bunch of questions, but Windows machines are a bit harder to figure out when they have the types of problems you are seeing.

airport express wireless connection freezes SSH connection - any fixes?
so i am using an airport express and remotely access computers/servers via SSH. port forwarding is set up and the computer has a fixed local IP address.
if i continue to issue command in the shell, then the connection persists. however, if i leave it idle for some amount of time more than a half an hour, both terminal and xterm (X11) freeze for a considerable amount of time. then they time out and return to a active shell on the local computer.
i have since determined that this does not occur if i am using a direct (built-in) ethernet connection.
is this problem fixable? are there settings in airport admin utility that can be changed to prevent this from occuring?
any advice or pointers would be tremendously appreciated

    hi bill,
thank you for the suggestion. i added the lines to my .ssh/config file and so far it seems to have solved the problem.
i'll evaluate it over the next few days and post back if i notice any problems. it seems to achieve what i was thinking at least conceptually. to somehow, while idle, send something to ensure the connection stays alive.
many thanks for the solution. it's been a nagging issue and it's great to be likely rid of it.

  • ITunes Freezes when connecting ANY iOS device

So, my issue is exactly what the title describes, but let me give some more detail.
I have a MacBook Pro (OSX 10.9.5) that's currently running iTunes 11.4. My issue is that every time I connect any of my iOS devices (or my wife's or friends') as soon as iTunes begins to detect an iOS device, it freezes. The computer doesn't freeze, the device doesn't freeze, just iTunes - as soon as the device name pops up in the upper right corner of iTunes, the program freezes.
This issue did not happen on previous versions of iTunes (I think on 11.2 and earlier), but as soon as I updated, it started happening. For a while, I just kept a previous version of iTunes so that I could keep syncing my devise, but when I got my iPhone 5 (recently) it won’t requires the newer iTunes version, so I can’t keep doing that.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes multiple times with no success. I have tried resetting the devices, making sure all updates are done on all devices, etc.
To be clear, I have tried this with multiple different devices (iPod Touch 3rdGen, iPad 2, iPod Touch 4thGen, iPad Mini, iPhone 5) and it does exactly the same thing with all of them – it does not happen with any of these devices when connecting them to my wife’s PC or my work MacBook Pro. This makes me assume that it is an issue with either my Macbook Pro, or with how iTunes is installed on it.

Alright, here's what I got for you from the console:

  • Windows recognizes iPod, but not iTunes or iPod updater, causes freezing

I'm having some issues with my 60GB iPod Photo. I tried to store my friend's music on my iPod as files. Upon uploading them to my own computer, some files caused freezing, requiring me to disconnect and reconnect the iPod. I finally gave up and deleted all the files stored on my iPod. All of a sudden, although Windows XP Pro recognized that an iPod was plugged in, it would no longer open iTunes automatically. When opening iTunes once the iPod was plugged in, it would cause iTunes to freeze.
I decided to restore my iPod. About halfway through, there was an error message saying my iPod could not be restored. All songs were deleted but my iPod was still not recognized. Now, the iPod updater does not recognize that in iPod is connected, even though Windows does. The updater freezes, inhibiting me from completing my restore. iTunes freezes as well when my iPod is plugged in. My iPod displays "update in progress - do not disconnect," but nothing happens. When my iPod is not connected to the computer, I can navigate through it normally, although it does need to be unfrozen when left unused for a couple of days. I cannot tell if it plays files because they were all removed during my unsuccessful restore.
I have tried reinstalling all my iPod related software and I have tried my iPod on more than one computer with different USB cables, but nothing works.
    Help, please!

This is exactly the same problem that I am having I have posted on 14th March on itunes forum. I wish you luck I wait with interest to see what someone says. My ipod was working like a dream until i downloaded the update

Hook the RCA cables to the audio out on your TV, then plug the cable from your speakers into it.

  • Connecting Yamaha Speakers/Monitors

I have a Firewire 410 soundcard and the new IMAC. Does anyone know how to connect the speakers to the soundcard. What ports am I suppose to use? Also how can I have the speakers connected to the Firewire 410 and still have the Mac use those speakers for everything, such as Itunes and YouTube? Thanks a ton guys and girls!!

    yoyo,
glad it worked out. i also have a $50.00 2.1 computer speaker system on my tower's line-out jack for when i'm web surfing & the site/page has video/audio and/or for the HD monitor/2nd display. i can turn it on w/ 1 button. so i have 2 sets of speakers on my DP G5 tower. the speakers on my MOTU 828 FW interface are Alesis M1 mkii & i have to turn ea. one on as well as the power strip that drives them, plus the 828, so they pretty much come on when i need them for serious work-FCP, DP4 & sometimes iTunes radio when i'm cleaning the house 'cause they can play louder than the 2.1 system(quicker tthan hoking up my MacBook to the home theatre system).
p.s. if this solved your issue, please mark it as such, so that others who may have same issue will know. thanks.

  • Connecting external speakers

i just got my macbook pro and a led cinema display. i have connected my Harman Kardon SoundSticks to the mbp with a rca jack and cannot see those speakers in the system preferences sound section. the internal speakers and the cinema display speakers show up. any suggestions?
    thanks.

When you connect external speakers to your MacBook Pro, under Sound, they will still come up under Internal Speakers, but with the name 'Headphones' instead. Hope that clears any confusion up!
Also, to switch between the display speakers and the Harmon/Kardon externals, just click the name (either Display Audio or Headphones)
    Cheers

  • Trouble connecting external speakers

I'm connecting external speakers using RCA cables from the speakers to the headphone jack on my iMac. When I do so, under Preferences--->Sound--->Output, the "Internal Speakers" changes to "Digital Out" as I believe it should. However, I am getting no sound from the speakers (which work fine with other devices). The "Mute" button is not checked and I can't figure out what the problem is.
I'm running 10.6.5 and the speakers are M-Audio Studiophile AV40.
    Any thoughts?

The jack on the iMac is 1/8" mini stereo, I assume your "RCA cable" has that kind of plug on the end you plugged into your Mac's headphone out?
    Your AV40's are analog speakers, not digital. In +Preferences > Sound > Output+ it should say +Headphones > Built-In Output.+
Sorry to ask a couple of simple questions, but
1- did you plug into the headphone output or the line-in jack on your iMac?
2- when you remove the plug, do the iMac internal speakers work?

  • I have a macbookpro. when I connect any camera to the mac it does not show as a device. How do I load my pictures to either iPhoto or Aperture? It worked before but just stopped working. Any suggestions?

I have a macbookpro. I use Aperture and Iphoto. When I connect any camera to the Mac it does not open it as a device in Iphoto, Aperture or in Finder. It use to work but just stopped. Any sugestions?

Here is the full story. It may be long so please bear with me. I take a lot of pictures and movies. Since I have over 30,000 pictures I decided to place the Iphoto library on an external drive to save space on my internal drive since ot was getting very full. After I did that it worked fine for a while. Then one day I could not open the Iphoto library. Since I was overseas at the time I brought it to the IStudio ( not an Istore) overseas. They said to rebuild the library and they would do that for me. It took all day since I had so many pictures. When they called me and told me it was ready, I went to pick it up. They started to show me the new library. It crashed again. Not knowing how to fix this at the ISudio, they installed Aperture and imported the Iphoto library. This worked fine for a short time. When back in the states, it crashed again just like Iphoto. I took it to the IStore. They did not know why the overseas Istudio did what they did what they did  and rebuilt my aperture library. Again it worked fine. Now that I am overseas again. It crashed again. However, I concluded that the reason for these crashes is becuase I have the file on an external drive that derives its power from the Mac and not by itself. When I use it and stop for a while the MAC will go to sleep and this cuases the external drive to shut down. This then causes the library to have inconsistancies. Therefore, when it happened this time I tried to repair the library and after 36 hours it would close down Aperture. Therefore I decided to rebuild the library. That did not work either. So I tried opening the Aperture library with Iphoto. That seemed like it was going to work but after importing half of the 30,000 plus pictures. I photo shut down. I then made a new aperture libary and erged the old library with it. This worked. I now have an aperture library that works. However, when I plug my camera into the MAC nothing happens. The camera does not show up in devices in either Aperture, I photo nor in Finder. The USB port and cord I use works fine becuase I can read my external hard drives fine. I checked as SIG suggested in this thread and everything is set to open aperture when the camera is connected.
I have the newest OS version 10. 7. 2 and the computer frequently updates all my programs. I have not installed any ne software lately. The problem happens both if I am on battery or plugged in. Just before I came overseas the IStore replaced the Battery.   I can go back to the IStudio  here overseas but the last time I was there and told them about the problem ( I did not have my computer with me) they did not impress me with their wisdom. I will be back in that city in a month and can go there if need be.  Thanks for all the help so far. God bless.

  • CONNECTION OF SPEAKERS TO PAVILION 500 SERIES DESKTOP

Just bought first desktop PC a Pavilion 500-312ns desktop that came with a Pavilion 22xi  monitor and all seemed fine until i realised that  the monitor has no speakers or  any options to do so .So my question is  how can i connect speakers to the desktop ?. Can i use cabled speakers  or would  Bluetooth or wireless be the better option ?.
Now i understand that to some of you this may seem like a stupid question to  ask but i would appreciate any help or advice i receive .

    Hi,
    It does not have Bluetooth.
    (a) You can connect speakers using connectors at the back:
    Рис. 7: Back I/O ports
    1 - USB 2.0: 2
    2 - S/PDIF
    3 - VGA
    4 - DVI-D
    5 - LAN
    6 - USB 2.0: 2
    7 - USB 3.0: 2
    8 - Audio: Center/Subwoofer port (yellow orange)
9 - Audio: Rear Speaker Out port (black)
10 - Audio: Side Speaker Out port (gray)
11 - Audio: Line In port (light blue)
12 - Audio: Line Out port (lime)
13 - Audio: Microphone port (pink)
    (b) Or you can connect using Bluetooth but you need to buy a Bluetooth USB dongle & your speaker MUST support BT:

Updated: By the way, you still need more hardware to connect to speakers on the monitor because your computer does not have HDMI port.

  • Connecting iPod to Windows freezes computer

I have the newest version of iTunes installed on my computer. When the program is running and I try to connect my iPod, iTunes freezes and I have to force quit the program. iTunes does however, recognize my iPod right before it freezes.
How can I keep iTunes from freezing on me?

    Let's try it this way....
    1) Was it ever working before?
    2) Between the time it was working and the time it stopped working, what changed, either on your computer or on the iPod? Did you update any software (including iTunes)? Did you install any new USB devices?
It is starting to sound like the problem is an iPod that got corrupted during a sync due to communication timing problems with iTunes 10.5, but I won't know until I learn whether it was working before and what started the problems was an upgrade to 10.5. If that is the problem, then there are a series of suggestions in the summary post that I linked that should help you figure things out.
This is why I need you to carefully think about what changed between the last time it was working and now. It could be as little as the iPod being assigned a different drive letter.

  • Connecting Passive Speakers to my Creative L

    Hi,
i have recently purchased the Creative Li've (not external). I have a set of PC powered speakers which i can connect.
i also have a complete set of 5. Hi-Fi speakers which are connected to my Hi-Fi system. However they are passi've speakers..i.e they draw power from my Hi-Fi system. I want to know of any way i can connect these speakers to my Creative Li've. The wire ends are bare. they have no jacks..though fitting a jack is not an issue.
    Any suggestions would help

I also have a pair of wonderful sounding old Mission speakers that are not self-powered,
and I was wondering if anyone knew whether the iMac's internal amp can drive them.
    *No way!* The iMac's 24 watt internal amp is NOT connected to the headphone output;
that's only for the internal speakers. The headphone output is spec'd at 1.6 Vrms max
with an output impedance of up to 24 ohms -- so, Apple only guarantees that it can
deliver 0.1 watt to an external load. In reality, the output impredance is probably less
than 24 ohms, so it will probably deliver a little more than that -- but the maximum
power output is still gonna be well under 1 watt. Headphones, yes ...speakers, NO!

  • IPhone keeps thinking it's connected to speakers?

Ever since upgrading to iOS 7, every few minutes my iPhone switches from playing through the internal speakers to playing though some speakers that it isn't connected to. It will continue to play my music, but my volume option will suddenly disappear as if it were connected to speakers that control the volume. It will however play my ring tone through it's speakers when I receive a call. The only way to fix it is by plugging it in to speakers then taking it out, however; that only helps for a few minutes. Any help is appreciated! It is an iPhone 4S.

    Hi Claire,
Have you tried resetting the phone (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Silver Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays, see if the problem has been resolved.
    Cheers,

  • Connecting shelf speakers to G5?

    Hi,
I have a pair of Tannoy shelf speakers which I would like to use for editing. How would i connect this to my dually 2.0 G5? I have the onboard sound card.
Also, it would be important to note that i'm using an Addlogix KVM switch, http://www.addlogix.com/peripheralsharing/embed.asp?stuff=se_adcbody.html
so in reality, i need to connect the speakers to this.
    any thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Keebler

I'm a little confused as to how I would connect the speakers to either the switch or to the G5.
From the G5 to the KVM switch you need a stereo mini (male/male) cable. It has two male plugs, one on either end.
There must be a specific type of wire to be used b/c there is the L/R (white/red) spots coming out of the speaker, but only the 1 input for either the switch or g5. i think i would need a wire that would take take both l/r from each speaker and have all 4 go into 1 wire?
From the KVM switch to a amplifier/stereo receiver you need a stereo mini to *whatever the amplifier/receiver needs for input* cable.
From the receiver/amplifier all you should need is ordinary speaker wire as it should have connections on the back for that. You just insert the bare end of a wire and then into the red/white of each speaker.
The G5 does not amplify the signal enough to power your speakers. You need a stereo receiver or a amplifier.
Here is something to help educate you.
