Connecting AppleTV via Ethernet

My Mac is plugged into my Broadband router via an Ethernet cable. If I plug an Apple TV into the router too will this allow me to stream content via the Ethernet cable? Or will it only stream content via WiFi?

No you do not really need to do anything special. Once connected it should configure automatically if your router is configured correctly. For example if you can plug your computer into the router now access your network and internet your probably set. You will simply plug the ATV2. Been a while since I hooked mine up via ethernet but at most you might have to make a selection on the ATV2 to get it to configure but Im not even sure you have to do that.

  • Problem connecting AppleTV with ethernet

I have an AppleTV2 that works perfectly connected to Wifi,  but if I connect via Ethernet, it cant find my ITunes Library on my computer. The AppleTv still is able to stream from the internet and is connected to the Internet but does not find any computers on the network. Also my iphone cannot find my AppleTV.  If I unplug the ethernet cord and go on the wifi, it has no problem connecting. How can I connect via ethernet and see my ITunes library?
Here is the setup of my network: I have an iMac, connected via ethernet to Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is connected via Ethernet to a Motorola router that I am using as a switch that is in my basement. The Motorola router is then connected via ethernet to a switch that is connected to my AppleTv as well as a few other devices. All the devices connected have no problem finding the Internet connection.

Try connecting the Apple TV 2 to the airport extreme. My setup is an iMac , iPad and two iPhones connected wirelessly via airport extreme. My apple tv 2 is connected via Ethernet to the airport extreme. It all works fine and have had no issues.

  • Need help connecting laptop via ethernet connectio...

can anyone help me connect my laptop to the bt homehub via ethernet. i have my xbox 360 in port 1 and that works flawlessly i am trying to connect my laptop to the second port but i cant connect. dont think i am using correct settings. if someone could walk me through it i would appreciate it..... thanks daniel

It is probably just that your laptop has been used with a router before and it may be set up to use a fixed IP address - one which is outside the ranfge of your current router.  Follow Jarviser's excellent instructions here and you should be up and running.

  • Cannot connect 8610 via ethernet, fine on wifi.

I cannot get the printer to respond using a hard wired ethernet connection. The lights on the printer indicate connection and data. The screen shows connection with the router and shows the IP address. I have run through all the re-installation procedures and IP address suggestions.  It works fine via wifi.

    Hi @polar3,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand you are not able to connect your HP Officejet 8610 to your Mac running the Mac 10.7 Operating system using an Ethernet connection.
    1. Do you get any error messages when you try to add the printer?
    2. How many 8610's do you see in the Print and Scan window?
Let's go ahead and reset the printing system:
    Reset Printing System
    1. Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click System Preferences.
    2. In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.
    3. Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
    4. Click OK to confirm the reset.
    5. Type the correct Name and Password.
    6. Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol..
Now continue here: Installing Your HP Printer in Mac Lion Using a Wired or Wireless Network Connection
Are you now able to see the Ethernet connection?
I hope to hear from you soon.

  • Time capsule connect to existing network cannot connect MBP via ethernet

I have set up my time capsule via Airport utility to "connect to existing network", which is my Netcomm wireless router (which is my DHCP server). MBP connects perfectly to time capsule if wireless is on, presumably via the Netcomm. But if I plug the MBP into an ethernet port on the time capsule it is not recognized and it gets a self assigned ip 169.254.x.y.
Airport utility is very restrictive in the options and is basically useless in resolving the obvious ip conflict. Is there any trick to getting both the wireless and ethernet to work ? It should not be this difficult....
The time capsule 2T disk is useless as a backup device over wireless.

Is that the exact wording of the option you chose? In AirPort Utility I see options of "Create a wireless network", "Join a wireless network", and "Extend a wireless network". (Perhaps the difference is due to language usage.) The option to "Join a Wireless Network" is only useful for sharing disks and printers. It doesn't support Ethernet ports.
if I plug the MBP into an ethernet port on the time capsule it is not recognized
With some options there's a checkbox to "Allow Ethernet Clients". If you see that, try it.

  • Can no longer connect online (via Ethernet)

    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me. I've had my macbook since October 2007-- never had any issues or problems getting online (just connect the macbook to a cable modem using a regular ol' ethernet wire). I was online earlier today as usual, no issues, but I put the macbook to sleep, came back about an hour later and all of a sudden I couldn't get back online.
Did all the usual stuff: reboot macbook, reboot modem, restarted a gazillion times, checked wires, made sure it wasn't my ISP. I've done it all. Everything else is fine and working normally. I checked the wire with my desktop PC (which is what I"m using now to type this and connect online --so I know it works, and so does my modem, obviously) yet and still I cannot get my macbook to get connect.
I'm noticing that under Network Status, no matter how many times I check 'Built in Ethernet' it never appears in the box. Nor can I see my IP address when I'm in the Built in Ethernet tab.
Under Network Diagnostics everything has a red dot next to it: Built-in ethernet (failed), Network setting (failed), ISP (failed), Internet (failed), Server (failed)
Weird all the way around. It was working fine thins morning! I didn't do anything different today. It's like my automatic ethernet settings never existed. Before, I was just able to plug in my wire and it was all good.
Can anyone help? (Please bear with me I'm a total noob, so I apologize if I left out any important info...) thx in advance

Just wanted to close out the topic--so I went to a local Mac "clinic" and they determined what I feared to the be the issue: something is wrong w/my ethernet port/logic board.
    *Sighhhhh
The guy was honest with me and said it'd cost way too much to repair it and that I'd just be better off buying a wirless router and sticking to wireless...Which is what I'm going to have to do.
Oddly enough one of my friends said she experienced the same thing on her MB but admitted she'd dropped hers. I've never dropped my MB nor has anything out of the ordinary happened to it (to my knowledge).
Thanks again Glen for trying to help.

  • TS1398 Connections..Wifi/Ethernet

So, in order to stream effectively, I have had to connect AppleTV via ethernet, but now, I can't play items selected within Appletv, from 'Computers' as they are connected via WIFi. Seemingly, my ethernet and wifi connectins are different - despite being via the same router, in the same room, practically on top of the Appletv box..
VERY frustrated that I can easily stream anything on my iPad via WiFi, but Apple TV has enough problems to make me hardwire it to the router!
I am assuming I am doing something wrong?
any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hello, topcat33.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article that I would recommend going through when experiencing this issue.  Start with the section labeled If you are unable to access or play content while connected to a Wi-Fi network.

  • Airport extreme won't connect via Ethernet to BT homeHub v2.0

    Hi
here's what I want to do:
    1. Homehub is connected to the phoneline and will provide a b/g network for my iphone/xbox/laptop1
    2. I want to connect my airport extreme to this (from what I can tell this must be done through an ethernet cable) so that I can have a separate N network which only 1 laptop will connect to.
So the problem I have is that no matter what options I select in the airport extreme when it's connected via ethernet it tells me that nothing is connected to the Ethernet WAN port. I've tried two different cables different ports on the back of the hub etc. nothing works. Every time I search google or forums for an answer people just write "connected it via ethernet and it works great" but there's no guide to what settings to use that I can see.
Can someone please help me with some sort of noob guide to get this setup how I've stated?
    Many thanks in advance

    Hey Bob
thanks fro the quick response. I have actually tried exactly that but it still flashes orange at me I'm suspicious that the AE may have a fault because during the setup (i can't remember the exact steps) but I got the AE updated and it complained that it could read from the AE (error code was 10057). Googling this does thow up a couple of solutions which I haven't tried.
    so my steps should be:
    Factory Reset the AE
    setup as join existing network
join via ethernet to create a 2nd network
connect up the cable to the WAN port and the Lan of the Hub
    change to bridge mode.
One thing I did notice (which may or may not be related) is the subnet mask on the AE says 255.255.0.0 when I set it up like this. However when I make it just join the network without trying to create a new one (which works) it sets it to 255.255.255.0 . the IP address also begins 192.168.1.* whereas in the other setup mode it is something different. Does that matter at all?
    Thanks
    Alan

  • Connecting to Airport Express via Ethernet Cable

    Dear Apple Support Community,
My setup at home is such that all my devices are in such close proximity to the Airport Express, and therefore I connect everything to the Airport Express via ethernet cables (NAS, Apple TV, PS 3).
The final step in my network setup would be to connect my Macbook to the Airport Express to connect to the internet using the Ethernet Cables, instead of using the wireless connection - because my Macbook is positioned right next to the Airport Express.
However, I am struggling to get the Macbook to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet Cable through the airport express. Is there a special way to set this up if this can be done. I know Wireless would be the answer, but the problem is, when I download movies etc, I write the files directly onto the NAS which happens a lot quicker than doing so via WiFi.
I hope the above question makes sense.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    Regards
    ST

Hello Brian Hunt1. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I have an old PowerBook G3 and I do not have a wireless card for it. My plan was to connect it, via Ethernet cable to my airport express which is on my home wireless network (DSL to Mac Mini to AirPort Express via built-in AirPort).
Unfortunately, the network configuration your describing, where you would use OS X's Internet Sharing feature to share the Mac Mini's wired Internet connection wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), won't work.
If I cannot connect my laptop this way, could anyone suggest a wireless card that is compatible with this slightly antiquated, yet very useful machine?
Only the "Pismo" PowerBook G3 is capable of using the original AirPort card. If you have this model, then the following DIY instructions will show you how to install it.
If this isn't your model, then check out the following vendor offerings:
    o QuickerTek

  • EMac - trying to connect via ethernet

I was given this eMac - it works really well, and thought that I'd try and connect it via ethernet.
I've found out the IP and router addresses and have changed them in the settings menu, as explained in the apple support guide.
The ethernet cable works and it says that the ethernet card in the mac is working fine, router works too. But, still can't connect - I've tried via internet explorer and through safari - still nothing!
Have restarted mac and router, several times, still nothing. Any ideas - HELP?
    amie

    Welcome to Apple Discussions amez.
The settings for ethernet are received fairly automatically by the Mac. You don't actually have to set any IP or router addresses in the network section.
Just make sure the Configure IPv4 has *Using DHCP*
    Location Automatic.
    Show *Built in Ethernet.*
select Show, then *Network Port Configurations*,
and make sure the *Built-in Ethernet* is selected in that box. It should also be dragged to the top of the list if there is more than one device.
What you need to set up are your ISP details in the router itself.
I think that is where you are failing to make the connection.

  • How can i connect/disconnect PPPoe via Ethernet connected time capsule??

I connected the time capsule with Ethernet.
I set connect to PPPoe with "Manual" option.
I could easily control "Connect/disconnect" pppoe using AIRPORT (in the menu bar). But I could not find a way to "Connect/disconnect" via ETHERNET. (No ETHERNET icon on menu bar anyway...)
Could somebody help? THanks a lot.

Have you consulted the printer's user manual for setting it up as an Ethernet printer? You will also need to delete your current printer in Print & Fax and when you Add the printer you will need to do so as an Ethernet printer. This means you will add it either as an IP printer using either LPR or IPP protocol - depends on what the printer supports. An Ethernet device requires an IP address that is either manually configured on the device or derived if the device supports DHCP. If the former then the IP address you configure for the printer must be within the range of IP addresses used by your router (typically 10.0.1.2-10.0.1.199 for an AEBS/TC.) This should be covered in the printer's user manual.

  • Sharing via WiFi a NAS connected via ethernet to a MacMini

    Hi,
I have a WiFi network to which a MacMini (with Leopard) is connected. An ethernet NAS disk (ReadyNAS NV+) is connected directly to the MacMini via ethernet. The shares of the NAS disk are correctly mounted on the MacMini.
My goal would be to be able to see the NAS shares also from other Macs connected to the WiFi.
    This is roughly the architecture:
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MacMini ------ethernet------ NAS-disk
    DSL---WiFiRouter
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OtherMac
The NAS-disk is configured to advertise itself via bonjour and appletalk: in fact, when I connect the NAS-disk directly to the WiFiRouter via ethernet, both the MacMini and the OtherMac see the shares of the NAS-disk.
However, when the NAS-disk is connected vie ethernet as above to the MacMini, then only the MacMini sees its shares. I tried to put the shares of the NAS-disk as shared folders in the File Sharing part of the Sharing panel, but apparently they are not accepted (I can not drag them there, nor are they selectable from a file browser window). I also tried to do an Internet Sharing from Airport to Ethernet, but to no avail.
    Any suggestion?
    cheers
    --e.

I'm not very good at "drawing" in html so here goes:
    Room 1
Connect everything via ethernet cable to a gigabit switch
Connect gigabit switch to a Lan Port of a wifi router/bridge like
    the Belkin mentioned above
    Room 2
    A mated Belkin wifi bridge
connect Belkin via its LAN ports with ethernet wire to everything else
(except airport extreme which you retire and the dsl modem that connects to the WAN port of the Belkin).
or connect Belkin via a LAN port to gigabit switch and connect everything else, except the dsl modem, to the switch.
    Retire the airport extreme.
This scheme will keep all your equipment on the same subnet. And since each room will
use hardwired ethernet, speeds should be good. The gigabit switches can keep
highspeed traffic isolated from the wireless bridges.
The only wifi in this schema would be the wifi bridge between the two rooms.

My question is can I make this work? After buying the Ethernet cord, all my reading of the AirPort Express manual seems to suggest that the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express is to only be used as an input port, not as an output. Is this correct?

  • Connection to HD via Ethernet ?

    Hello!
I bought a Freecom Mediaplayer device, in which I installed a 300Gb HD, formatted with a PC : 1 NFTS partition and 1 FAT32 partition.
I can access these partitions when I connect the Mediaplayer to my iMAC via USB.
However, I don't see the Mediaplayer when I connect it via Ethernet through my router.
My iMAC (192.168.2.157) can successfully ping the device (192.128.2.133), but I don't know if/how to mount the partitions: when I search the network, the only device it finds is the iMAC.
Do you have any clue ?
    Thanks in advance !
    iMAC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    iMAC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello,
just forget my question, that Freecom device is not meant to serve as network hard drive.
However the connection should work the other way around : I should be able to play the movies /music / photos which are on my iMAC on my TV set thanks to this device.
I just need to find out how to create or activate a guest account that is called "guest". I'll ask the question on the proper forum.

  • Is there a fix for 'share internet' via ethernet?

As of a few months ago, there was a known bug in 'share internet' - it would not work with ethernet.  This is the case on my system (OS X 10.8.2).  Internet sharing works properly with wifi but not at all via ethernet.
Has anything been done about this?  Or has Apple decided that it no longer supports ethernet connections?
    Has anyone found a workaround.
    thanks

I should have been a little clearer.  I have a mac that connects to the internet via a usb modem (from Verizon).  I want to connect two other machines to the internet via this connection, and one does not have a wifi board, so I need to connect to via ethernet.  "Internet sharing" has "ethernet" as an option but it does not appear to work. Checking it doesn't yield any error message but the machine that is connected via ethernet cannot access the internet.
As a test, I've tried this with a mac pro both ways.  It works with wifi, but not with ethernet.
