Connecting AX and ethernet wire to cable modem (and ARD).
Hi all,
This has to be easy, but after 10 minutes of searching, I can't readily find the answer.
I have a cable modem (with one port) which works with my Macbook just fine. I plugged in an Airport Express (and used wireless only) and it works fine also, EXCEPT:
When using Apple Remote Desktop (the latest version) to control the Macs at my office, the status of all remote Macs is: Screen Sharing. When I connect to a remote system, I can see and control that Mac, but I can't copy anything either way (from remote to local or visa-versa).
When connected to the cable modem with an ethernet cable, everything works fine.
SO, I would like to connect maybe a 3 port hub to the cable modem and use both the ethernet cable and the AX (for other computers & iPhone) at the same time. Will this work? Can someone suggest a good hub/switch for this if it does?
Secondly, is there a way to use ARD on a wireless computer? It would be nice to go to a hot-spot and control my remote Macs.
Thanks.
mike p.

No. You need a router not an Ethernet hub (or switch). The AX can't do the job because it only has a single Ethernet port.
Secondly, is there a way to use ARD on a wireless computer?
Sure. It works just like any other computer behind a router. You must configure the computer to be at a fixed IP address and then forward/map the appropriate ports through the router to the computer.

In other words, does the AirPort Extreme NEED to be the device connected to the coaxial cable, or can I connect that cable to the Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem/wireless gateway? (My Internet provider requires DOCSIS 3.0 for speeds above 12 megabits/sec.)
Will the Airport Extreme "program" the Express via an ethernet cable, and than the cable can be removed?
The "bridge" or "repeater needs to be quite a distance away from the physically connected cable modem/wireless gateway and the ethernet- connected AirPort Extreme, and we have wall-to-wall carpeting, and the walls and ceilings are off-limits (family politics), so a looooong ethernet cable is out of the question.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
Thanx!
P.S. The 802.11 in my house (ground floor, about fifty feet away from the modem; in the living room about 35ft away *****! And Motorola touts this wireless gateway as having amazing coverage (360, I think they call it),but in fairness, this house is old and has a 5 hanset cordless landline and a microwave and a fan, etc., etc., etc......See if find a solution in one of these discussions:

Should Iplace my ethernet switch between cable modem and airport extreme?
I'm looking for the best placement of an ethernet switch in my home network.
Should I place it "between" my cable modem and my AEBS or connect it to the output from my AEBS?
The current placement is connected to one of the AEBS outputs.
I'm attempting to set up an old AE (802.11 a/g from 2004) with a different network name than my home network, that I'm trying to set up for a college dorm network and each time I plug the AE to the switch to confirm its functionality, my network gets a little confused.
Help appreciated.
Regards,
jim P.Should I place it "between" my cable modem and my AEBS or connect it to the output from my AEBS?
This all depends on whether you have a simple modem.....or.....a modem/router or gateway combination device.
If you have a simple modem, you cannot place the switch between the modem and the AEBS. The reason for this is that the modem can only deliver one valid IP address and it will be a matter of chance as to which of the devices connected to the switch receives it. The other device connected to the switch will not be able to access the Internet.
If you have a modem/router or gateway type of device, you can place the switch after the modem/router and before the AEBS if you wish, although there is really no advantage to doing so unless this makes things easier for you in terms of hook up.
If none of this makes much sense at all to you, leave the switch in its current location connected to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS since that setup will work correctly no matter what type of "modem" that you might have. -
Connecting Two WRT54GS Wireless To A Cable Modem w/ TIVO, PS3, and Wii
Not real great in the networking thing. Upon reading I have found that you can only use WEP on a wireless adapter pluged into a TIVO (series 2 that is christmas gift to wife) to connect it to the internet, and as a concern of having to downgrade my entire network on my main router to WEP I looked for a solution. I read somewhere that if you cat5e from the TIVO into a WRT54GS you can then use the router to send wireless with WPA (or WPA2) to another WRT54GS that is cat5e into the modem. To complicate things I am giving my kids a PS3 and a Wii for christmas and wanted to connect it to the same router as the TIVO. My internet is Charter Comunications cable. The two routers are Versions 5 and 6. The TIVO is remote and I cannot get cat 5e cable to it so I need to use wireless. All distances are ok for wireless. The "main" router that is plugged into the cable modem is a ver.6 and is set in DHCP. All "gifts" are wrapped under the tree so I can't set those components before christmas. I would like to setup the routers to speed things along. I have a laptop (hardwired ) to the second router to set it up. Two other computers and a HP printer are connected to the "main" router. All computers are Windows XP -SP2.
Questions:
1. Can this be done with these components and keep security on the "Main" router maintained?
2. Upon reading these boards it sounds like I should split my system into two seperate routers with the second one passing thru the main router. How would this be done? What are the settings? Reserve addresses for static in the main router to use in the second and run as one system? Remember I am not to good at the network thing... so be complete in the explaination.
3. If I do things as indicated in question 2 will that leave my TIVO, PS3, and Wii open to attack to the internet? Any way to better secure?
4. Any pointers as to how this really should be done would help. Any better ideas in setup??
Thanks.......Yep, I wanted to connect them wireless but it sounds like I cant without some issues.
Second choice: Cascade-- Connect routers by Cat 5e and make the second one a WEP that has the TIVO, PS3, and the Wii connected wireless to it. The main Router would have the computers and printer connected to it. The main router would be WPA (2) protected for a wireless laptop.
Is the second choice possible??
Should the second router be with static IP's?? Is this the best way to do this with these types of items connected?
I think this will make two wireless systems but if I make the second one a DHCP enabled one then I think it might cause conflicts with a chance of both routers picking the same IP for a connected item. What is the best method for doing this and keeping some type of security?? -
Connecting my airport extreme to comcast cable modem-- AGHHH
I've had three Comcast techies to my house since switching over to their triple play offer. Today, I finally got connected to the Internet, through their cable wired into my house, and connecting their modem to my Mac mini (which does not have wireless card). I want to hook up two other laptops in the house, but can't figure out how I do that? The Comcast guy today said with an ethernet cord. So I've plugged the cord into the back of my Extreme, but the other end doesn't fit into the only slot remaining on the back of the cable modem -- which is labeled "phone"... Does anyone know how I do this?
Thanks,
JillYou need either a router or an ethernet hub/switch between the modem and the computers to give you the needed ethernet ports. Hubs/switches are cheaper but, depending on the Comcast policy on multiple computers on one modem, may not all work at the same time.
A router, on the other hand, allows up to something like 255 devices to be connected. Instead of the Comcast server passing out IP addresses as would happen with a hub, the router issues the addresses to each device. This is useful when the ISP limits how many IP addresses can be assigned to one account (we had this with our ISP--limit of three--and is why we now use a router).
Basically, the arrangement is:
cable from wall >>> cable modem >>> router or hub >>> multiple ethernet lines out to individual computers

Can I connect TC with ethernet to USB cable?
Can TC work as HD only by connecting to my Imac with ethernet to USB cable?
Please confirm that you have at least two good ethernet cables, which will be needed for the installation.
I understand that you do not need for the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network, and it will only function as a hard drive, correct?
The step by step that we provide will allow you to backup to the Time Capsule using the current modem/router that you have now and also backup using ethernet if you connect the computer directly to the Time Capsule.
This is what you want, correct? -
Can't connect WRT54GL router to Motorola Surfboard cable modem SB6120
I can't connect my router (WRT54GL) to my new cable modem (Motorola Surfboard SB6120).
Some info:
1) Cable modem works perfectly when connected directly to computer ethernet port
2) ISP is Optimum Online
3) Using Automatic DHCP setting on router
4) Using MAC cloning on router
5) I can access the router's admin screen from the PC
6) I can connect to the router wirelessly, but no internet access
7) I've tried powering down everything multiple times, still no internet access
8) I upgraded the router firmware to 4.30.14
9) The "link" light on the cable modem never lights up when connected to the router
10) This is very frustrating

Hi
I've tried two ethernet cables, no luck. On the router, I get lights for Power, WLAN and the ethernet port that the pc is connected to. The "internet" light is not lit.
When the modem is connected directly to pc the link is lit up, just not when it's connected to router.
The internet light won't turn on as you need to plug something on the WAN port. And that should be the cable coming from the modem.
When you connected your pc directly to the modem, do you get internet access? -
My 3000H will no longer connect to the internet via my cable modem - help please.
I have 3 computers and a media server on a Linksys router with a Comcast cable modem. Everything AOK. 3 weeks ago my Lenovo 3000H shut down and rebooted for no reason. Then I began getting popups while I was on the internet saying that I needed to click on a button to make a dial-up connection. I would hit X or Cancel to make it go away. It happend more frequently and other related popups started, but I could close them and continue normally. Last weekend It happened again but I lost my connection to the internet and it would not reconnect. Now I get a big error message "Connecting through Wan Miniport(PPPOE)... Error 815: The broadband netowrk connection could not be established on your computer because the remote server is not responding. This could be caused by and invalid value for the "Service Name" field for this connection. Please contact your ISP and inquire about the correct value for this field and update it in the Connection Properties..
I called Comcast. They don't have a clue what Error 815 is. I have changed every cable, rebooted the modem, router and all computers countless times, and reset the modem per Comcast. I have taken the router out and connected directly into the Lenovo. I have gone through every screen related to broadband connection to no avail although, being a beginner, I see screens that I have no clue what they do.I have a couple of friends and a Comcast fellow who tried to walk me through the steps they thought would restore my connectio. No luck.
Can anyone walk me through the necessary steps to get me back to ground zero and then through the steps to reestablish my broadband connection?
Help Please?Emma-
In Safari, press on the Bookmarks icon and select History. Then press on Clear History at the top of that menu, and see it there is any improvement.
If not, try unplugging your WiFi router for a few seconds. Then reset the iPad's network. Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings. You will need to reconnect the iPad to WiFi.

IMac often can't connect to internect-requires resetting WIFI & Cable modem
New to WIFI and cable modems.
My iMac, and at the same time, my laptop and desktop PC, fail to connect to the internet 30%-50% of the time we try to use them. All say the are connected to the WIFI with strong signals. Using diagnostic on iMac tells me to reset both the WIFI and cable modems and try again. This usually cures the problem but sometimes it requires repeated resets. The problem mostly occurs at what I would call peak customer usage time, mornings and evenings, although it can happen anytime, it appears. I suspect I'm on a cable interenet service with a narrow bandwith, and that either causes my cable modem to loose communication or not to communicate at all. Or am I wrong about how all this works? I think I know that if the volume of folks on the cable go up, the speed can go way down--down enough to limit those who can connect, or those connected to get kicked off? Am I unreasonable to think that I should be able to connect whenever I want to, with the occasional (one a week) inability to connect?
Cable folks have been out here to run a new line to the house, and to get a good cable TV signal (with 5 TVs), we have to have a amp at the box outside the house (broadband cable is not on the amp). TV signal without the amp is terrible, if that's some indication of the quality of the trunk line in the neighbor for cable TV. If someone could link me to a discussion of these issues that would be wonderful. I'm trying to figure out what my problems are and where my efforts and possible complaints should be directed. Are purchased cable modems better than those provided by the cable company, and should I buy one? I'd just like to connect 8 out of 10 times I want to use the internet. Cable is way faster but dial-up was far more dependable in my current situation.
Thanks!

When I connect Time Capsule to Time Warner Cable Modem, amber light flashes
I want to use Time Capsule as my primary wireless network base. When I connect my Time Capsule directly to my Time Warner Cable Modem, the amber light flashes and Time Capsule won't appear in AirPort Utility on my MacBookPro. I've tried unplugging everything and waiting to reset cable modem and Time Capsule.
Before I got the Time Capsule, I used a wireless router. The only way I can get Time Capsule to work is as a guest on my old wireless router network. I can't get the Time Capsule to configure itself directly with my Time Warner Cable Modem.
Any advice would be most appreciated. This situation is pretty common now and it has nothing to do with the any of the routers but rather how cable modems are configured to work. They seem to latch on to the first device connected to them whether it be a router or a computer and will not allow any other device to access their network. The solution is to power off the cable modem and wait a minute. While you're waiting disconnect the old connection from the cable modem. Power up the cable modem and then connect the new device, router or computer, to the cable modem. Give it a few seconds to complete the connection and you should be ready to go. You have to do this every time you switch connections to the cable modem. This is also why you should set your router to serve addresses so that you don't have to do the cable modem samba when you want to connect a new device to the network.

Can i connect directly from my cable internet connection, or do I require a cable modem?
I would like to se up a home network using my cable internet without having to rent a cable modem from my service provider. Can I use a Time Capsule to connect directly to the cable internet, or do I need the modem to establish the connection before using the time capsule to create my network?
The Time Capsule does not have a modem onboard. You will need a modem if you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
-
Question Do I have to wire the time capsule to my modem or will it perform wirelessly . I am just using it for everyday backup thanks community
A Time Capsule is a combination wireless router and server grade hard drive. You can get rid of your existing wireless router if you want and replace it with the Time Capsule. This way you can use the same wireless network for your Internet access and for your Time Machine backups done wirelessly in the background via the same wireless network.

I have a mac pro connected by ethernet to a cable modem via ethernet. There is only one ethernet port on the modem.
I want to keep the Mac connected via ethernet for speed. Is there a way that I can add an airport extreme to this set up - for my ipad and roku, and for guests to use - or do I need to buy a router to put between the modem and the mac?
If I need a router, what kind?
Thanks. The modem connects to the WAN "O" port on an AirPort Extreme router.
The Mac Pro connects to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme router.
Or if you do not need the ability to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the router, you can save a bit by using an AirPort Express.
The modem connects to the WAN "O" port, the Mac Pro connects to the LAN <-> port
Either the AirPort Extreme router or AirPort Express router will allow up to 50 wireless device to connect.
There are many other wireless modems offered by other manufacturers as well. -
Router connected to cable modem by Ethernet port cannot get IP address from DHCP.
I have an ethernet cable on Fa0/0 connecting my 1841 router to my cable modem. The issue is that the router cannot obtain an IP address via DHCP when I have the "ACL-OUTSIDE-IN" ACL applied inbound on the Fa0/0 interface. I tried to allow all BOOTP and BOOTPS traffic in my ACL, but still no luck. I really don't want to run the router without a simple ACL firewall and connect it to the internet. When I take off the ACL off of Fa0/0, the router is able to get an IP address via DHCP.

Please help me connect eMac, cable modem, and Airport Extreme Base Station
I connected Ethernet cord from cable modem to Airport Extreme Base Station and then another Ethernet cord from Airport Extreme Base Station to eMac, but I could not get internet access on my eMac that way. I'm only getting internet access by directly connecting eMac to cable modem. Can someone please help me with a step by step explanation of how to set these 3 machines up so that I can have internet access on both my eMac and, wirelessly, on my new MacBook. Thank you very much in advance.

Ensure that you power off the cable modem for a minute or so when you switch it to another Ethernet device.
Ensure that you are connecting the WAN port of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the cable modem. The eMac should connect to the LAN port.
The steps for setting this up can be found in the "Designing AirPort Networks" (direct PDF link) document. Look through that document and try to get it setup. Then return here if you have more questions. Don't forget to post what you tried and the issues you encountered.
