Connecting Camcorder

I recently got a Sony Handycam Mini DVC (Digital Video Cassette) Camcorder. I was wondering if anyone knew of a cable that would connect to my computer (iBook G4) so I can use the footage in iDVD and iMovie. I already have a firewire cable which does connect to both my camera and computer but there seems to be no activity between the two.
Anyone help me, would be very much appreciated

You should only need a 6-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable. Sony calls FireWire "i.LINK"

  • Re: How to connect camcorder to my Satellite L300-1AD?

    Hi everyone
I hope someone out there can help me - my problem is driving me mad!!
I have a Satellite L300 1AD(?) laptop and I am trying to connect my camcorder to it so that I can watch and edit my holiday videos. Apparently I can't use a USB cable and need an "i link" cable or firewire cable. However, I can't find where to connect it onto the PC. Also there are so many different "pin" variations.
Am I able to do this at all? I know I am female but I consider myself to be quite good usually at things like this. If you need anymore info please let me know.
Please help - I am getting desperate?? I want to see the koalas and kangaroos in Oz!!
    Thanks in anticipation

    Hello
Your notebook model is not known to me but if your notebook doesnt have firewire port (i-LINK) you must use expresscard solution.
It is something like cards shown on http://www.synchrotech.com/products-expc/expresscard-firewire_00.html
Talk with your local dealer. Explain exactly what you want to do and I hope he can helps you.

  • Connect camcorder drivers for a Sony CCD-TRV608 Hi8 Camcorder for Windows 8.1. How do I SOLVE? New camcorder?

There are no drivers for a Sony CCD-TRV608 Hi8 Camcorder for Windows 8.1.  How can I solve this problem?  Do I need to buy a newer or different model that plays video8 and videoHi8 tapes that IS compatible?  Its a shame because I searched for months for the power cord and bought connecting cords for USB and the old fashion three RCA plugs for a VHS VCR and now I cant use them.

Dear Comrade VideoGeek, Yes, I am extremely frustrated, and you have my sincere apology if I was rude to you.  I should have known better than to say unwise and unkind things to you.  My bad entirely.  Sorry!! The things you don't know are that Windows 8.1 does not under ANY circumstances acceps USB video streaming.  Not from my camera and not from Dazzle or ANY other device or cable.  That is written into STONE by Microsoft.  Can't do nothing about it.  That's a barrier that cannot be broken or worked around. The other thiing you don't know is that I do not have RCA outlets on my camera.  I bought it assuming it must have as most devices until then did and got it home in 2001 or whenever and found to my great dismay that it ONLY has a USB output.  Not multicolored RCA jacks of any kind.  That is also a barrier that I cannot break unless I buy a used camera that takes my tapes and DOES have RCA outputs.  My bad.  I should have returned it immediately at the time, unfortunately I was too ill at the time to do so. I know you were only trying to help.  I'm sorry if I was snippy with you.  You were extremely kind to try to help.  And I appreciate you.  Hopefully other people will see your answers and they will help them. Meanwhile, I'm banging my head against the Apple walls trying to find out which product of theirs MAY be able to work for me and which is the best solution for me all around and that too is a nightmare. Thank YOU for being so kind!!  And for respoding  with kindness.

  • Connecting camcorder to macbook pro

    aahhh
how do i connect my sony Hi8 to my macbook pro for editing?

I'm afraid I don't have time to check out Apple's online store and recommend camera for you. But, I can guide you to this page which outlines the formats supported by iMovie:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/features/formats.html
The vast majority of digital camcorders will be supported by iMovie. Generally, any camcorder that uses "DV" format or "MiniDV" will work with iMovie. iMovie also supports HD and MPEG4.
There are some popular camcorders you want to avoid: Don't get a Sony "MicroMV" format camcorder. Don't buy a camcorder that records to optical disc.
Once you have selected a camcorder, it's a good idea to go the iMovie forum and search the forum for any comments (positive or negative) regarding that model. It's also wise to search the web for reviews prior to buying. Often you will find comments from Mac users regarding compatibility.

  • Connecting camcorder to Mac

I want to copy over the video on my camcorder to my mac.
The manual does not give information on how copy this over to a computer. But it does give info on how to copy it to a VCR.
The instructions say to connect with a with two a cables, a S-video (S-150) and a Stereo Video (STV-250N) for audio.
    I have a iMac G5 running Mac OS X 10.3.9
Here are some of the ports:
    USB
    Firewire
    Line in/optical in
    Projector port?
    My question:
    1. Is there an adapter cable that can connect the S-video & audio cables to the Mac?
    2. Once connect, will the Mac reconginze the input or do I need additional software? Currently all I have is iDVD. I'm not able to spend alot of money.
    Please help.

I just finished importing the film into iMovie.
Man, this is great. I tried this about a year ago and gave up on it because the manual was so funky. There is nothing in it mentioning firewire. And the only thing I knew about firewire was the shape of the port on the back of my mac. The only info it gave on connecting the camcorder to a computer was for to copy the snap shots on the memory card over usb. You guys made short work of my year long problem.
    Thank you.

  • Looking to connect camcorder JVC GR-DA30U to iMac 27"

    Hey group!
Wondering how I could connect my mini dv camcorder to my mac and transfer the video to the computer.  My camcorder only came with cord for playback on TV and the power cord, but nothing for the computer, especially a Mac.  The manual refers to a Dv cable (http://www.manualslib.com/manual/82290/Jvc-Gr-Da30u.html?page=30#manual) and says "When using a DV cable, be sure to use the optional JVC VC-VDV206U or VC-VDV204U DV cable depending on the type of DV connector (4 or 6 pins) on the PC".  Even with this information, I am not sure what cords and/or adapters I would need to make this work.  Any tips?
Currently running Mavericks with Thunderbolt and a FireWire 800 port.  Thanks!

I thought my computer had both thunderbolt and firewire 800 port, but I will confirm that. I was thinking a FireWire 400/800 would work?
The ony iMac's that had both FW and Thunderbolt were 2011 models, is that what you have? Without knowing what iMac you have we are really guessing. BTW I would recommend looking to see if that camera is compatible with the version of iMovie you have. I am assuming you want to edit your movies in iMovie though. Apple provides http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US I would recommend using it.

  • Trouble connecting camcorder to IMAC

Just got a new Canon Elura camcorder, bought a firewire DV cable and my computer cannot reconize the device. Nothing appears as an additional drive. I tryed opening imovie, quicktime but I am not able to open nor view the video. Could anyone help. Thank you very much.

Just got a new Canon Elura camcorder, bought a firewire DV cable and my computer cannot reconize the device.
Sorry to reply to this post in the incorrect forum, but Dorian hasn't yet posted his question in the iMovie forum.
Dorian: I've got a Canon Elura camcorder, too, (Elura 80). Before I connected it to my iMac and opened iMovie, I made sure the mode selection (on the right side of the camera) was set to VCR/Play. Most importantly: I clicked the Menu button, and when the onscreen menu appeared on the LCD, I pushed the Set lever down until VCR Setup was highlighted. At that point, I clicked in the middle of the Set lever to show a secondary menu -- navigated down to where it says AV-DV... Off, and pushed the set button one more time to go to a third menu, where you have to make sure AV-DV is ON. From there, opening iMovie will show Camera Connected.
    Hope this helps!

  • Connect camcorder to Macbook Pro?

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro. I want to connect a camcorder to my Macbook so I can record using Quicktime Player/iMovie. I read that DV/FireWire out is required on the camcorder, however as my budget is £150 I have been unable to find a SINGLE camcorder with DV out
Are there any alternatives (or does anybody know any cheap camcorders)?

Never knew you could buy a camcorder for only £150 !

  • DV8 1090ev - connecting camcorder to firewire port - nothing happens

I'm trying to capture video to the hard disc by connecting my canon dv20 camcorder to the notebook using the ieee1394 port, but when I switch on the camera, nothing happens. I can't see it in the device manager. I replaced the cable already to no avail.
    Could someone please help?
    many thanks

I had the same problem w/ my panasonic. This may be too simple but I think the firewire plug in dv8 is too recessed. I tried many times before realizing that it wasn't really plugged in all the way even though it sure seemed like it was.

  • Firewire connected camcorder

I've got a Sony DCR-TRV20E camcorder (DV tape with firewire out) which I've pulled video before onto my MacBook Pro (now on Snow Leopard). I tried connecting this via firewire over the weekend but it didn't show up in iMovie or system profiler. The firewire interface on the macbook works as I'm backing up to my firewire connected external drive. I tried daisy chaining the camcorder through the external drive too but that didn't work so I suspected the lead but having taken the lead and camcorder to work it connects fine to work's MacBook (leopard).
This makes me think its a software problem at the OS level. Any ideas where I should start looking?
    ChrisJ

Found out it was a fluke. Same firewire wire worked consistently with work laptop but nor home laptop. It turned out it was down to the angle of the "dodgy" wire. Once I found the right angle it worked consistently for the home laptop too. Bought a new wire to get rid of the problem.

  • Upgraded to 10.5. Must reboot every time when I want to connect camcorder

Sorry if I am in a wrong place with this question.
I used to have video chats when my Canon XM2 camcorder was connected instead of a webcam, it produced a very flattering picture of myself (I need it more and more). After I upgraded to Leopard a couple of days ago I have lost the ability to connect the camera without restarting the computer. It's like back to my 20th century PC again, only we did not have digital camcorders back then.
I know there is a bit of misunderstanding between Canon and Mac OS when it comes to using FireWire protocol, but in my case I am afraid it is something different. System Profiler sees the camera, iChat also reports it as connected but instead of the picture there is a black rectangle in the iChat window; the same behavior has been registered with Skype. After I restart the computer (with the camcorder ON) everything works as expected.
Can someone please advise if there is a setting in Leopard that tells the computer to recognize the signal from my camcorder without rebooting? Thank you.

After 20 minutes of full disconnect from power - I even unplugged the computer - it recognizes the camcorder every I power the camcorder off and then on again. Not sure how long this memory will stay but so far so good. Probably hot-plugging the video camera via FireWire was not such a great idea after all. I think I will be safer if I connect FW devices to the computer when both the device and the computer are powered off.
    Thank you Defcom (UK).

  • Help with connecting camcorder to MBP

    Hopefully, someone can help me
i would like to video tape some games of the team i coach, download them to my MBP and then edit them and show them on a tv through my MBP.
    My question(s) are these:
What do i need to hook up the camcorder to the mbp to download the games
and what do i need to hook up the MBP to a tv to show the videos?
    thanks in advance!

    acrahm,
Hmmm, you don't have all the info you need yet, so I'll chime in:
First, you need a camcorder with a Firewire interface. Most DV camcorders do have this; Sony calls it "iLink." Also, your best option is a camcorder that records directly to DV tape, not a direct-to-DVD or hard drive camcorder.
You would then import your video from the camera into iMovie. Once the camera is connected and iMovie is open, you can control the camera (in most cases) right in iMovie. iMovie would then be used to make any/all edits, add transitions if needed, etc.
You can play the edited movie on your computer, and have it connected to an external monitor or TV, or you could burn the movie to a video DVD and play it in a standard DVD player. Another option for playing from the computer is to export to Quicktime, but the end result wouldn't be any different than using iMovie.
If the footage in question is Hi-Def footage, all the same things regarding camcorders hold true. iMovie can handle this footage just as well, but (of course) it requires much more disk space. If this is the case, you might consider exporting the edited footage back to the camera, and connecting that to the TV. BTW, this is a viable option with standard def footage, too. In fact, you will get better results that way when playing back standard DV on a Hi-Def TV (over using the standard DVD format). This is because standard DVD is a compressed and "lossy" format, and the standard DV format is uncompressed.
The method you will use to connect the MBP to a TV depends entirely on the TV. Hi-Def TVs can accept input using a DVI to HDMI cable/adapter. Standard TVs will require the use of Apple's DVI to video adapter, available from Apple (I think it's $20).

  • Connecting Camcorder to iBook

I just recently bought a Sony HandyCam and would like to connect it to my computer (as it uses the MiniDV disks that can't be inserted into the DVD drive). I was wondering if there is a way to connect my camcorder to my computer, possibly with a firewire or USB cable of sort. I have the AV connector for the Camcorder, so maybe there is a cable that allows for AV connection into firewire/USB? If anyone has any ideas, could you let me know? Thanks so much!

jmwilson, Welcome to the discussion area!
If your Sony camera has a iLink (Firewire) connection, you only need a 6 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable.
