Connecting Computers using Firewire

I have one Mac Book and one MAC G5. I want to connect both Mac using firewife.
So, I would like to know whet is the exact procedure to connect both Mac after connecting firewire cable and I also would like to know how to connect by clicking option "Target Disk Mode" under "Startup Disk".
I connected PC with Mac G5 using firewire, but it doesn't work when I try to connect by clicking option "Target Disk Mode" under "Startup Disk". When I restarted my Mac, it does not start using PC 'C' Drive.
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks.

So, I would like to know whet is the exact procedure to connect both Mac after connecting firewire cable and I also would like to know how to connect by clicking option "Target Disk Mode" under "Startup Disk".
With both Macs connected with a FireWire cable, start up one machine with the T key held down, or use the Target Disk Mode option, or use the Network pane of System Preferences to set up FireWire networking. You should then be able to access one Mac's hard drive on the other computer.
I connected PC with Mac G5 using firewire, but it doesn't work when I try to connect by clicking option "Target Disk Mode" under "Startup Disk".
That option may or may not work with a PC depending on the PC's configuration.
When I restarted my Mac, it does not start using PC 'C' Drive.
A G5 cannot start up into Windows. FireWire Target Disk mode makes the hard drive available without starting up the Mac from anything.

  • Authorization denied between two computers using FireWire

I used to synk my MacBookPro with my PowerPC G4 using a local Firewire network. That was running smoothly when I was running under Mac OSX 10.4.9.
I recently upgraded both machines to OSX 10.5.6, but when I want to copy files from the computer I'm using to the mounted computer, I have an error message saying:
"The item "name of the file to be copied" contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?"
If I type continue, I have the following error message:
"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items"
What is strange is that an icon of the file is copied on the mounted computer, but the file is corrupted and its size is close to 0 bytes.
I'm logged in as administrator on both machines, so I do not understand why this is happening.
Any help or hints about this issue will be greatly appreciated

Those FireWire links are for a third-party vendor (OWC), not Apple.  I'm sure there are UK vendors that sell the same type of FireWire items.  For example, when I search "firewire 800 400" on eBay UK (www.ebay.co.uk), I see many listings.  For the adapter, add "adapter" to the search.
An Ethernet (networking) cable is pretty standard.  To get the highest speed possible between an iMac G4 and a recent Intel Mac, it should be "Cat-5" or better (it is usually printed on the cable).  If it's a really old cable (more than ten years), you may want to get a new one that is Cat-5e or better.
Do your old Mac AND your new Mac currently connect to the same "hub" or router for Internet access?  The connection can be wired or wireless.  If so, they can (probably) already be connected using File Sharing to transfer files.
On the iMac G4 running Tiger (10.4), open System Preferences Sharing pane.  Check the box for Personal File Sharing and click the Start button over to the right.  Note the Computer Name that is shown in that window.
On the new Mac, open a Finder window.  In the sidebar, look under SHARED.  If the iMac G4 (with Computer Name noted above) is listed there, you can do File Sharing.  Select it in the sidebar.  Over to the right, click on Connect As.  In the window that comes up, enter the user name and password for your user account on the iMac G4, and click Connect.  You should see some "sharepoints."  At this point, you can go into anyone of those locations (on the iMac G4) like it was your local hard drive, and copy files to your new Mac.
If that does not work with your current connection, you can try the same thing after connecting the two Macs directly with an Ethernet cable.

  • Transfer Files over 2 macs using Firewire?

    Hi,
I got an iMac and a macbook and I would like to transfer files across both computers using firewire, as I heard its super fast? Much faster than transferring over my airport network.
Any ideas how to do this?
    Thanks

Firewire is fast (400mbits/sec) but the Ethernet in all new Apple Hardware is even faster (1000mbits/sec).
Connect the two systems with an Ethernet cable.
    On both machines:
Turn on Appletalk: System Preferences -> Network -> Built-in Ethernet -> AppleTalk Tab -> 'Make AppleTalk Active' on both machines.
Turn on File Sharing: System Preferences -> Sharing -> Services Tab -> Check 'Personal File Sharing' and Click 'Start'.
You should be able to see each machine in the Finder - in the top left corner of any Finder window should be 'Network'. Double-Click on the name of the OTHER machine, and enter your User ID and Password. When prompted, select the volume name that is the same as your login name.

  • Can I use firewire to transfer everything from my Macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.25 GHz) to the new iMac (2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5)?

I have a MacBook Pro to use at work. It has everything (all genuine softwares, server connection etc). The company is using a contract IT company so connecting to the server and setting email is real issue with me as this IT people can't configure Mac. Last time it took them 1 week to set up everything for me ( me one the phone with them as they aren't coming to our office - they only use QuickViewer to get access to my laptop).
Now the company is buying me an iMac so that I can use the laptop at home. Can I use firewire to transfer everything to the new iMac so that I don't waste my time installing softwares & calling this IT people to set up my email and connection to the server again? If it works do I have to enter serial numbers in again for all the softwares or I have to buy new softwares (I know with Adobe CS - I can only install in one computer)?
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to use the adobe suite on the imac you will have to deactivate it on the MBP or it will show up as being used. That is if you can only install it on one computer. Some licenses you can install it on 2 computers but it has to say that on the cd key tag.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the contractors. It is not that hard to get stuff like that up and running on the mac.

How can I boot and run my Mac Mini on my 12" PwrBk display using firewire?

    bwhit:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No reason why you should not be able to do it using Firewire Target Disk Mode. Here's what you do:
    1. With both computers shut down connect both via firewire.
    2. Startup the Mini and hold down "T" key immediately after chime.
    3. Startup the PB and immediately after chime hold down Option key.
    4. Select second HDD icon on the screen and click on the right pointing arrow.
    5. Computer will boot from Mini's HDD.
Be sure to shut down PB completely before shutting down Mini.
Please do post back with an update or with further questions or comments.

  • Unable to use firewire mode

I put my olr 15" powerbook in firewire mode and it works without any problem an my iMac (PPC). The drive mounts in a second. But my target is to mount my powerbook drive using "firewire mode" to my brend new macbook (intel) and it definitly not working. I have an error like "do you want to format the drive".
    Any idea ?
    Thanks
PS : all computers are in 10.4.8

I'm sorry, but you didn't say what you tried. I mentioned two things. One works, one does not work:
    1. Works: Hold T key on PowerPC Mac at startup and connect to Intel Mac.
    2. Does not work: Hold T key on Intel Mac at startup and connect to PowerPC Mac.
Which of these two did you do?

  • M-Audio not connectin when using firewire 800 drive

Computers that have both a FireWire 400 and a FireWire 800 port may be sharing the same FireWire bus internally. When using both, the 400 and the 800 port at the same time, you may experience problems like audio drop outs or loss of connection to the M-Audio FireWire interface. There's a variety of possible reason for this including but not limited to bandwidth limitations, clocking issues (400/800) and bus master problems with the devices connected to both ports. M-Audio recommends using the M-Audio FireWire audio interface on the computers original FireWire port while adding a separate FireWire interface card to the system (PCI or PCMCIA). Connect any third party FireWire 800 devices to the added FireWire interface card.
But will this really fix the problem?
M-audio says yes & apple says maybe.
Sound like a serious flaw with apples firewire bus.

    Damian,
Following are my experiences. My setup is listed down below.
-Yes, that will fix the problem. The bottom line is, M-audio FW box doesn´t like to share disk drives on the G5 firewire bus (both 400 aand 800). So yes, 400 and 800 FW ports are somehow connected internally, sharing the same resources.
-I had a spare FW 400 PCI card lying around, and I attached my disk drives to that. Didn´t start to look around for a FW 800 card though.
-And although it seems like a fault on Apple´s side too, I can´t speak very highly on the FW410 box either. Every time I do an update on my system, the 410 install gets messed up (won´t show devices in AudioMidiSetup, the only cure is to uninstall and re-install).
And the other interesting thing is that every time my Mac boots up, the 410 control panel mixer page is all messed up with funny pan positions and fader values. A reset does the job, but this has to be done every time I boot up. Maybe this is working in Tiger.
I tried solving this with the M-Audio support, and after describing my problem, they just said I should call their tech support. Being on the other side of the world, I shurely don´t wanna max out my phone bill.
Haven´t upgraded to Tiger yet, don´t want to keep upgrading all the time. In general the system is working nicely.

  • Using Firewire between XP and OSX

I am interested is connecting my Mac and XP machine using a firewire cable. Now I have read the article about using the target disk method but I was wondering if there was a way to do it with both computers being turned on. I read an article on WinSCP3 to transfer files but I really do not see a speed increase from a normal network connection. I want to take advantage of the 400Mbps transfer speed, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Well, I'm disappointed after trying IP over FW on two eMacs. I have to admit that eMacs have slow 5400RPM HDs, and that both were running dnetc full blast, (but FW isn't CPU intensive like USB), but here's my results, though I swear that I did this at work between a QS/DP1.467GHz and an MDD/1.42GHz with much better results...

  • OS 10.4.6. has broken dialup connectivity when using fast user switching

I installed OS 10.4.6. It seems to have broken dialup connectivity when using fast user switching when switching from one user to the next.
For dialup, it is extreamly annoying that I can not resume downloading a file from were it got cut off, but now, if another user wants to check their email, my download always gets broken and has to be restarted. Dialup is slow enough with out having to start from scratch even more frequently, now.
Also, in earlier versions of 10.2 or 10.3 (I don't remember which), I was able to switch users and maintain listening to a single users' iTunes.
I would like to be able to switch users and not lose either my dialup network connection or the primary users currently playing iTunes songs.
Perhaps for iTunes, one should be able to chose to mute another users' instance of iTunes, if it is currently playing.
    Mini-Mac 1.42GHz 80GB BT/AE   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have not tried replicating this but might be able to provide some additional information.
We use network login accounts on our desktop computers. Fast User switching deliberately will not work for multiple network login accounts. (Remember network login accounts normally also have an associated network home directory mounted via AFP.)
Now a bit of background about volumes and mount points under Mac OS X. Under Mac OS X, any additional drive (or more accurately 'volume') is listed under the 'Volumes' folder, remember also that Mac OS X is a Unix operating system. So just as normal for Unix, the boot drive is '/' or the root level and Volumes is a folder in it. The underlying Mac OS X software automatically 'attaches' and additional volumes as sub-folders in the 'Volumes' folder (in Unix speak these are called 'Mount Points'), if you have an external hard-disc called 'Fred' then this would be represented by the following path
    /Volumes/Fred
If you happen to have two volumes with the same name connected at the same time then while in the Finder they may show up with the same name, in Unix they would have different names automatically assigned to keep them separate like so
    /Volumes/Fred
    /Volumes/Fred 1
Now getting back to the Fast User switching problem and AFP volumes, when you login to a File Server volume it also is automatically added to the Volumes folder, so if we have a File Server volume called 'Shared' it would look like
    /Volumes/Shared
With Fast User switching potentially both user accounts could be accessing the same /Volumes/Shared which means both user accounts would be talking to the server via the same File Server login, hence the possibility for one of the Fast User accounts to be using the 'wrong' permissions.

  • What is FireWire and what FireWire adapter do I need to use FireWire 800 for my portable external hard drive ?

Hi guys, I'm new to Mac. I have a MacBook Pro 13" (late 2011) with Lion OS and Parallels 7 (Windows 7). My understanding is that there is FireWire connection / extension built in to the MacBook Pro already. I also have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive 750GB USB2.0 and 3.0 (that can be used for PC and Mac). It states that the portable external harddrive is FireWire 800 compatible. The questions are (1) how does FireWire works ? (2) how do I use or activate FireWire 800 ? (3) is there any setup / setting changes I need to on my MacBook Pro ? (4) what FireWire adapter do I need to purchase to connect my portable external harddrive to my MacBook Pro ? Is it expensive ?
I read a few articles online but they are too technical for me. They mentioned something about FireWire adapter with 6 pins or 9 pins. Not sure what that means. I'm totally confused. So any help, advise or guidance will be much appreciated. In Layman's term would be better. Thanks.
How about Thunderbolt ? Is it compatible with the above external portable hard drive mentioned ? Do I need a Thunderbolt adapter for it ? How do I activate or use Thunderbolt ?

    Thanks, Clinton and Alberto.
The below link is the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive (product code STAA750302) that I have. It states that it features USB 2.0 or 3.0 plug–and–play connectivity and easily upgradeable to USB 3.0, FireWire 800 or eSATA. It only comes with a 18-inch USB 3.0 / 2.0 backward compatible cable.
    http://www.seagate.com/au/en/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/standard/ goflex/
Based on the above, my understanding is that I need to buy a FireWire 800 adapter to connect to the portable external hard drive so that I can use FireWire 800 with my MacBook Pro. Is this correct ? Do I need to get a separate cable as well or can I just use the 18-inch USB 3.0 / 2.0 backward compatible cable that was provided in the box ? If so, what sort of FireWire 800 cable do I need to get ? 9 pin to 9 pin ? 6 pin to 9 pin ? Or 4 pin to 9 pin ?

  • HT3231 Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet?

    Hello,
Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro (non Retina display) using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet? The older Mac is a MacBook (Intel, 2007 vintage). The Time Machine backup is to a Western Digital external drive with FireWire & USB ports.
    Thanks!
    Chips

    Thanks for the helpful reply.
After posting, I read & researched further. We're going to be limited by the hardware – the MacBook & external drive both have FireWire 400, & we don't have a 400 to 800 cable or adapter. So we'll connect by ethernet, & be patient that it make take some time.
I have to assume that Migration Assistant will be just as comprehensive regardless of the connection method / protocol.
    Best!

  • How to fix the "Two computers using the same IP address" issue on the airport express

I just bought an airport express and got dsl at my apartment, and I haven't been able to set up the wireless connection. My DSL works just fine but whenever I hook up the AX I get an error message saying that there are two computers using the same IP address on the network, but I only have one computer.
I know this is probably a simple fix, but I've never had this issue when I set up the Extreme at my parents house and I haven't been able to find a thread on this.
As of right now I have it set to Factory settings.
    Help please!

This modem was designed to connect directly to a computer and you are trying to connect it to a router.
Unfortunately, this is not a simple fix as both the modem and your AirPort Express will need to be configured differently to work together correctly.
Connect the modem directly to your computer.
Open up your browser and type the default IP address for the modem into the address bar. Check your documentation on the modem but it is likely 192.168.1.254
That will bring up the configuration page for the modem.
You may need to enter the modem access code which is on a label on the back or bottom of the device
Look for an Advanced tab, then look for a tab labeled something like PPP Location
Right now, you will see that "PPP is on the modem"
Chance that to "PPP is on the computer or router"
Click to save your new settings and the modem will restart
If you ever need to get the modem back to its original settings, you will need to hold in the reset button on the back of the modem for 5-6 seconds and then enter in the default IP address to be able to access the settings on the modem
Connect the modem to the AirPort Express with an Ethernet cable
Open AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Continue to follow the guided setup to "Create a wireless network"
You may be asked to "switch" networks when you do this. You want to switch
Select the "Connect Using PPPoe" option when it appears
Enter your user name and password with your provider. Leave the Service Name area blank. You want to always stay connected if you see that option
Continue to follow the guided setup and Update to save settings
Pull the power cord from the modem, wait a moment, then restart the modem
Log on to the wireless network that you created during the setup and you should have an Internet connection
