Connecting EHD to Apple TV to watch VLC videos

I have a Passport EHD that a friend of mine loaded up with VLC videos and I'm wondering if I can watch these videos on Apple TV if I hook up the EHD to it.

I also have a theory that if I hook my external HD up to my router and turn on home sharing that I can accress the videos on my iPad with the VLC player app and then use AirPlay to send the videos to ATV
Home sharing is not magically going to mount, index, and share an external hard drive.  If you can setup a file share that the iOS devices can see then you can play the content via AirPlay, but AirPlay is extremely problematic and error prone.  You would save your self a lot of headache converting them to something iTunes is able to play and using the native ATV menus to select your content.

  • How can I stream the audio only to my Apple TV while watching the video on my iPad?

    Hi everybody!
My question might sound a little confusing to some of you, but anyway: When I watch a video on my iPad (youtube app, facebook, etc.) I would like to watch the video on my iPad and stream the audio to my atv, which is connected to my hifi. Currently, every time I hit the airplay button both video AND audio will be streamed.
Many people complain about only streaming audio, but that's precisely what I am looking for! I don't want to turn on my TV for every silly 0:30 min youtube video. I would love to find something like this:
    Cheers for any help!

you can't rely on airplay mirror some apps support the old in app airtune audio only option if the video app in question does you can do it from the apps settings somehow
if not then you need a airport express which does pretty much what airplay mirror on the Apple TV does but it's a audio only

  • How can I hook up my Sony surround sound to Apple TV to watch streaming videos?

How can I hook up Apple TV to my Sony surround sound to watch streaming video from Netflix?

    Which Apple TV is it?
There should be outputs you can use for video/audio. The latest Apple TV has HDMI out. Find the correct cable that matches your TV and follow Sony's user manual to hook everything up correctly.

  • Using Apple TV for watching HD videos created in HD iMovie

The main reason I am thinking about getting ATV is to watch HD home videos I have edited on iMovie on my HDTV. Has anybody actualy done this? Does the quality remain high after exporting to Apple TV.

What software are you using for the conversion -- QT? As
far as I know, it still employs a simply "drop/add"
algorithm for changing frame rates. Have you tried
dropping your iMovie (or other) project file to MPEG
Streamclip and using the "blend frames" option along
with the motion-adaptive deinterlacer to see it it
might "smooth" things out a bit? Not saying this
approach is perfect or that quality is up to
professional/commercial standards, but it didn't seem
all that bad to me. Just wish I had some better test
footage. (Hoping to get some now that spring is
    here.)
I've tried it all . Started with QT, gave VisualHub a run through and then tried Streamclip. I will say that of the three solutions, Streamclip gave me the best results but the framerate still stuttered quite a bit.
I'm still holding out hope that perhaps Apple will at least allow a 30fps option at 1280.. I think it'll help out many podcasters like Rocketboom too.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It's fairly certain it's your local network. Why are you trying to mirror something you already have on the Apple TV.

Im unable to get my Mac Book Pro to connect to my Apple TV? Have been able to connect both the iPod and iPad but not this?

You can use AirPlay to mirror what is on your MacBook.  Take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5209?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Can I view a video from my macbook pro on my TV using apple TV while doing something else on the laptop desktop? I.E. watch a video on the tv, while searching the web on the laptop screen?

First off, I just want to clarify that I know how to view my macbook screen, videos, music, photos etc. through the apple tv connected to my hdtv. What I'm trying to do is use it like a second monitor. For example, I'd like to watch a video from the web through the apple tv on the hdtv screen, while simultaneously able to search and use the laptop like I normally would. I know there are two desktops with Mountain Lion, but I haven't been able to figure out how to link one to the apple tv and leave the other as the macbook. I know I've done this before when I had a macbook 13" and a cable connector, there was a setting in system preferences to view one screen (tv) with a video, and then still have the macbook screen free to search for files, the web, etc.... This is different from mirroring, but I haven't located this setting on the new macbook yet.
Ideally I'd like to be able to use my hdtv as a second monitor so I can be sorting and organizing photo files on the macbook, while viewing full size high resolution images on the TV screen. I've got a ton of photographs, close to a personal library you could ask me for a type of photo and I've probably got it, but there is a decent amount of extras, doubles, and just stuff I don't need. This would really help me get organized and allow me to share my work a little bit more efficiently.
I appreciate any insights and hope I can return the favor.
    Much Love
    Soulprogression

I do not know how to do this with an Apple TV (I don't have one), but as far as I know Apple TV only does mirroring.
If you have an HDMI cable long enough to reach your TV from where you sit, then it's easy. The TV could be set up in Extended Desktop mode (mirroring off) as if it was simply another computer monitor, and then you could just drag windows to it. If you have the Displays icon in your menu bar, that's where the setting is, or if the icon is not there, then the setting is in the Displays system preference. But again, that's for conventionally connected monitors, not Apple TV. If you don't have an HDMI cable and wanted a long one that's affordable you can get those at monoprice.com.
The answer we are still waiting for is if anyone knows if Apple TV can be used in extended desktop (non-mirroring) mode.

  • I have just went to the Apple Retail Store and purchased an HDMI adapter that plugs into the bottom of my iPhone 4. When I asked the sales person if I could watch the videos and pictures from the camera roll I have taken on a T.V. he said I could.

I have tried to watch the videos and see the pictures from my iPhone's camera roll on a televison but it is not working. It is like nothing is connected to the T.V. set. I have tried with cables that attach to the bottom of the iPone. I have used an HDMI cable and a component cables on two seperate Televisions. How is it supposed to work.
I plugged the HDMI cable into the HDMI #4 jack into the T.V. and turned on the iPHone and watched the camera roll on the iPhone bu tnothing appears on the T.V. screen. What would have to be adjusted to view the pictures from the camera roll on the T.V. screen. The same thing happend when I used "Composite to iPhone" cables to a different T.V.  I even tried with and iPhone 3GS, still no display on the T.V. screen.

Warranty on iPhone is not international, but valid only in country of
original sale. Since you purchased the iPhone in Australia, your warranty
is valid only in Australia. You must either personally return the iPhone
to Australia for evaluation and possible replacement or sent it to someone
in Australia to take into Apple for the evaluation. Apple will not accept
international shipments for repair nor will Apple ship out of the country
    after replacement.
Sorry to be the bearer of this news, but it is the way iPhone warranty and
    replacement has always worked.

  • With an external hard drive connected to my mac , can i have the videos streaming on my hdtv via apple tv?

i have 3TB hard drive where i store all of my HD videos since my macbook pro just cant handle them.
i connect the harddrive to my macbook pro to watch the videos when i need to but do not upload them back to the mac
can apple tv stream the videos to my hdtv when my macbook is connected to the external hard drive?
PLEASE HELP IF SOMEBODY HAS SPECIFICALLY DONE THIS
    THANKS

    aseemfromnyc wrote:

Yes, add them to iTunes. The fact that they are on an external doesn't stop them from being in iTunes.
If necessary, create a separate library which you just use when you have the external connected.
Alternatively, if you have an iPhone or iPad you could check out an App like Air Video, which displays video that isn't in iTunes on your device. I think you can then use Airplay to get it onto your ATV.

You can also use a Av Adapter to connect the iPad to your TV via an HDMI cable.

  • How to watch a video on an iPad on a TV via Apple TV without a network?

WE travel with a trailer and stay in Places that seldom have wifi. Keep TV shows etc on my iPad and want to watch them on the big TV in the trailer. Thought I could this with Apple TV.  So picked one up, but it seems I need to be connected to a network.  Is that so, or can the iPad connect to the apple TV itself?

You do need a wireless network in order to use the AirPlay feature to wirelessly stream to the TV using Apple TV. iOS: Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content
You can buy a router and set up a network in the trailer without needing the internet.
Alternately, you can stream wired from the iPad directly to the TV using an A/V Connection.
If your iPad has the old 30 Pin Wide connector, you need this cable:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD098ZM/A/apple-digital-av-adapter
If its a newer iPad and uses the skinny lightning connector, you need this cable:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter
Either adapter will require an HDMI cable and an HDMI port on the TV itself.

  • Having difficulty connecting apple tv with amazon instant video

II'm having difficulty connecting apple tv with amazon instant video or it won't stay connected. Help!

Is it naive of me to think that Apple should simply provide a portal on their Apple TV menu for me to access my Amazon Instant Video movies?
Maybe a little.  Amazon is a direct competitor, so it is not really in Apple's best interest to go out of its way to add support for a competing service that will cause Apple to lose money.  The bigger problem though is all of these video services using DRM to encrypt their content and lock it away from consumers so we can only watch content we pay for on certain devices.  Compaired to before when you could buy a DVD and watch it on any TV.  Now when you buy content you can only using it on a few specific devices.
Is their failure to do so about an Amazon/Apple rivalry, or because the two have to make some kind of deal before this can happen
They are competitors, but a bigger issue is that it is an incredibility complex legal agreement they would have to work out.  First there are legal agreements that would have to be worked out with literally thousands of copyright holders to distribute their content.  Then there is the software licenncing since Apple and Amazon would have to disclose how their DRM encrption works, then there are pateint agreements that can be worth billions that have to be worked out.  And all of that work would be so that they support a competator.  So there is not a lot motivating them to do something that would cost a lot of money and time.
If watching Amazon content is really your major priority you might want to return your ATV and get a Roku.

  • Firstly I updated my ipad into ios7 and after watching the video by Apple, iWork, pages and numbers are free for download after updating iOS 7. How can I download iWork pages and number for free?

Firstly I updated my ipad into ios7 and after watching the video by Apple, iWork, pages and numbers are free for download after updating iOS 7. How can I download iWork pages and number for free? Please help me.

stevejobsfan is correct; iwork for ios is free only for new purchases of new ios devices. A good work around (if you have wifi connectivity) is going to the icloud website on your ipad, and working on your document.
A word of caution (the real reason I am responding to your post). If you do a lot of 'formatting' of a document on iwork for mac, and then save it in icloud; you will probably loose most of the formatting you have done (this will be true if you oppen the document in iwork for ios; also) It happened to me, and I did not duplicate the document before saving it to icloud; I lost at least an hours worth of work.
