Connecting Epson Expression 636 SCSI scanner to Mac Pro

I have an Epson Expression 636 scanner currently connected to a G4 867 Mirror Door via SCSI card.
The G4 uses 64-bit, 33MHz PCI, so as far as I can I tell, no go for installing into the Mac Pro, which uses PCI Express 2.0 x16 or PCI Express 2.0 x4.
I also don't think anyone makes a SCSI card for PCI Express 2 (not SCSI 2).
The scanner does also have a parallel port as well as a small 15 pin port (labeled "option") that I am not familiar with.
It's a great scanner and don't even know if the Silverfast software will work for it, but I'd like to clear my office of an entire computer that only gets used for the scanner!
Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.
TIA

First off, the 636 is NOT tabloid size.
I didn't say it was. I may have assumed it—if I mistook A4 for A3 or whatever—but I never said it. What I had in mind was my own *Epson Expression 836XL*, which is a in fact a vintage tabloid-size scanner.
Second, the 10000XL is not 15 years old.
I didn't say it was either; quite the opposite. It is a currently available model that serves as a replacement for my aforementioned, older, discontinued *Epson Expression 836XL*

Just a thought, even today's low-end scanners have better specs and capabilities than a scanner that came out nearly 15 years ago. And they cost about the same price as a new card or adapter.
What I was addressing is the fact that there are some excellent 15-year old scanners (such as my 836XL) that cannot be replaced that cheaply, in fact not by anything under $2,999.99 (i.e. below $3000).

I fully agree.

    Hi,
In Austria, iphone and ipad "see" and connect to wifi signal no problem but mac pro in same room will not even allow me to choose the same wifi signal.  It seems almost blocked.  Havectried everything it seems by restarting, deleting preferred accoints, etc.  software is updated but running osx 10.6.8
    Thanks for any help!

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • How do I make my unsupported Epson Expression 800 artist scanner work in OS 10.5? Partitioning?

I have an Epson Expression 800 scanner which became non-functioning when I updated to OS 10.5. I have tried Vue Scan, doesn't work. Am wondering if I can partition my G4MDD HD and install OS 10.4 on it to get the scanner working again?
OS isn't noted below, but am running 10.5.8 on it right now.

since I backed my 10.4.11 system onto my external HD, do I need the physical disks for 10.3.9 in order to upgrade to 10.4 and so on onto the partition?
No. You may use a cloning utility  such a SuperDuper.
Can I just drag the folder that has 10.4.11 in it from my external HD to the partition as is, in toto?
No. Use the cloning utility. In this way, the hidden files, the unnecessary files and the proper links and such will all be taken care of to creat an identical, bootable volume.
Does this take a bunch of time?
The initial creation (duplication) varies on the size of the volume being cloned. From 15 minutes to an hour is common.
assuming I'm going to partition, do I need to set up a separate password, etc, to get to the new partitioned area I want for scanning?
If you clone, when you boot to the new partition, you will use the same password.
Even if you install new, you may set the same password.
then I would need to make it my startup preference, right?
Either that, or, hold Option (Alt on Windows keyboards) when you start up. This brings up the Startup Manager and allows you to choose which volume to boot to.
Also, is the folder that contains the backup of my old system enough as reference 10.4?
As long as the backup is bootable, you may clone it to another drive or even just boot to it.
Or do I need a physical installation disk for 10.4 or 10.3? Can the OS be updated just the same as my tower?
Consider each new hard drive or each new partition as another "computer". The thing is, all these reside within the same machine.
So, which each new drive or volume, you install and set up your OS as you did when you first bought and setup your computer.
All these new systems can reside in one machine. You may boot between them at will, but cannot run two (or more) at the same time.
If you use clone utilities such as SuperDuper, then you only need to install an OS and applications once.
After that, using the clone utility, you can recreate a duplicate at anytime, and use the utility to keep an identical backup, to which you may also boot.
Use the Startup manager to choose which you wish to boot to, and leave the Startup drive preference in the system preferences set to the drive/volume that you use the most.

  • How to connect 3x mini-displayport cinema displays to Mac pro

I'm looking for recommendations on how to connect 3  27" Apple cinema displays to a new Mac Pro (single card).
2 connect direct to the mini-displayports; but which adapter converts DVI-D to mini-displayport (not mini-displayport to DVI-D)?
Any suggestions/recommendations with a link would be appreciated.

  • Internal scsi drives on mac pro?

I have just received my Mac Pro, which will soon be put into use as the center of a commercial audio recording facility. I was under the impression that the SCSI drives I had been using in my aging MDD dual 1 GHZ would be port-able to the new box. But, after snooping around a little bit on the boards here, and looking into the machine itself, this appears not to be possible.
Is it true that ONLY SATA drives are compatible as internal drives in the new Macs?
If so, then I need to sort out my new drive configuration for the studio machine. For better or worse, my studio uses ProTools, which does not support RAID of any sort. So I'm left looking at sharing the internal SATA bus with the system drive, going with an external FW800 drive, or investing in an external SCSI drive (ugh).
    Any thoughts would be welcome.
    Thanks,
    Nick

following up on this thread -
I purchased the external chassis recommended above and have compared transfer rates with the somewhat unscientific copy time test, from the desktop of the apple SATA boot drive to and between various other drives. It appears that the internal SATA 7200RPM drive I bought from OWC is outperforming the external (10000RPM) SCSI drives I have mounted in the enclosure. This seems odd to me. I'm not sure if the bus speed is being ratcheted down to accommodate the cabling (SCSI 3) or what. I appear to be getting roughly one third of the 160MB/S limit on the Ultra160 drive (the buffer size is 8MB on this drive as opposed to 16MB on the 7200 drive).
Theoretically, the bus throughput is higher on the SATA bus, but I thought that would be outweighed by the drive performance - that appears not to be true. It also appears that the SATA drive is FASTER on the duplication process than the SCSI drive, which leads me to believe that the rotation speed is being trumped by something else - buffer size perhaps?
Any thoughts would be welcome. Here are the results of my testing.
    Copying 1.27GB .zip archive:
desktop to 2nd internal SATA drive: 19 seconds (68MB/S or .53Gb/S)
desktop to external SCSI drive: 25 seconds (52MB/S)
2nd internal SATA to desktop: 19 seconds (68MB/S)
Duplicating 1.27GB .zip archive on the same drive:
    internal SATA: 50 seconds
external SCSI drive #2: 58 seconds

  • How do you connect 3 HDMI monitors to the new Mac Pro running Maverics. HDMI to thunderbolt adaptors only support 2 displays. The fine print in Apple docs HT 5918 indicate  the Mac Pro will only support 2 HDMIs.  Anyone found a workaround?

I am trying to connect 3 HDMI displays to a Mac Pro.  I am using a HDMI to thunderbolt adaptor and can only get 2 of the 3 displays to work.
Does anyone know of a work around.
Is there a systems configuration varaible for type of display?

USB video adapters can severely limit graphics performance.  Use ACTIVE HDMI adapters instead.

  • Scanner for Mac Pro

I am looking to get a flatbead scanner to go with my Mac Pro. Any know which ones come with universal drivers?
Those on the Apple shop appear to require a G4 processor so I assume intel drivers are not available. Is this correct.
For various reasons I prefer Canon.

HP have released a UB driver for some newer models (but not my old Scanjet 3500c); Canon, I'm not sure. As a 'plan B', VueScan (www.hamrick.com) works with many (500+) models, is a great piece of work, and is UB. As I want to keep the (perfectly OK) 3500c, I asked HP, and they said there were no plans to produce UB drivers for it (I tried the new UB version, didn't work on my G4). Ed Hamrick, the VueScan developer, told me that "I suspect their drivers will work under Rosetta, and VueScan uses HP-supplied libraries that are PowerPC binaries to work on the Intel Mac". So, fingers crossed, you'll find a working solution…and me too!

The front headphone jack on my new mac pro desktop computer does not transmit sound when connecting a headphone or ear buds.  The sound still comes from the speakers and is not redirected to the head phone.  The port has never worked.  Any solutions?

okay, try option-clicking on the speaker icon on the top of your screen. That should bring up a list of sound output options. including headphone. You could try messing around with Audio MIDI. It may be possible that the thing is still stuck inside the headphone jack. Careful use of a toothpick may get it unstuck. I dunno, I've never had a problem with the headphone jack. • Setup Driver for Epson Perfection 2400 Foto Scanner in MAC OS X 10.8.4

Got my new MacMini this weekend, migrated from  TimeMachine the setup from my previous system (Snow Leopard) - no problem.
When starting the scanner, got error message and replaced EPSON driver by Apple Driver.
However, result is more than disappointing.  I tried scanning with several options.  No way I could get the quality that I am used from the old system - there it was hard to distinguish original from scan.
About Box:  PrinterProxy   Version 8.3 (405.29)
Downloaded  EPSONPrinterDrivers2.14.  Reset Printer System ( deleted all printers in system preferences ) and had system look for the latest.  Same drivers were loaded.
    Any suggestions?

Thank you for your help. Yes I'm able to choose it and I actually solved the problem by finding and downloading the latest driver for the interface on the Avid page. So everything works now.

  • Scanner and Mac Pro help, please!

I can't get my HP officejet 6500 Scanner to work with my Mac Pro

I don't see why not. My MacBook Pro runs it like a dream, and the hardware in the MacBook is pretty much identical with the exception of the GPU. And Logic certainly doesn't do much 3D rendering.
Besides, I've seen numerous reports on various Logic forums that it does in fact run great on the MacBook.
Back to the original question -- the 1.83 should do fine. I've yet to get close to maxing out my 2.0 in Logic. However, in my opinion it would be worth the upgrade to the 2.0ghz model. The one thing that really does matter with Logic is the CPU (and memory, but you already mentioned upgrading that).

  • How to connect 20" apple cinema dispay to 17"Mac Pro

    I got a 20"apple cinema display(2004)
Now I wanna hook it up with my 17"Macbook Pro (2007)
The problem is that I have 4 cables coming from the display. 2 is compatible with my notebook (USB and firewire), however, the other 2 cable (DVI and power) are not compatible.
So does anyone know what should I do to correctly connect my notebook to the display? like which kinda of DVI cable and power cable should I buy?
    Thanks a lot~

The Cinema Display 20 requires a special external (white brick) power supply that should have come with the display. If it didn't, you'll have to look for one on the used market or at third-party retailers. Apple no longer sells it. It's possible that the supply for a Cinema 30 would also work with a 20, but I'm not sure.
The connector for an external display on a 2007 MacBook Pro is DVI and ought to work with a Cinema 20's DVI connector without the need for any adapter or special cable.
