Connecting ethernet cable to macbook

having wifi issues with MBA and wondering if internet can be acquired someway through a cable connection?

Check out this link to the apple on-line store. It lists ethernet adapter/dongles, one for Thunderbolt/ethernet and another for USB/ethernet.

Back up is very slow on 2 tb time capsule. After 2 days only 60 gb of 320 gb completed. Have connected ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

Yes, that's terribly slow.  You should get somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-24 GB/hour via Ethernet, assuming there isn't a lot of conflicting network traffic or your Mac's CPU is under very heavy load.
Are you sure you're actually using the Ethernet connection, instead of WIFI?   To check, turn Airport off.  If the backup fails, it's on WIFI.  In that case, you need to set Ethernet as the "preferred" network, via System Preferences > Network.  Click the "gear" icon at the bottom of the sidebar and select Set Service order.  Then drag Ethernet above Airport.  When both Airport and Ethernet are on, that will make OSX select Ethernet over Airport.
If that doesn't help, see #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Does the migration assistant work if my pc is connected through an ethernet cable and macbook wirelessly?

I just got a Macbook Pro with retina display yesterday (this is the first time ive bought an apple computer) and im trying to use the migration assistant to get my files from my Dell XPS 720 to my macbook. I get stuck on the finding computers part because it doesnt detect the other computer. My pc is connected by an ethernet cable to the router that my macbook is connected to wirelessly. I also noticed that the macbook has no ethernet port to i cant use an ethernet cable with it. Im asking if the migration assiant can work if my pc is connected to the router wired, while the macbook is connected to the same router but wirelessly?

  • Problem with Ethernet ( & or Ethernet Cable Jack )  Macbook Pro 13'3 ( 2010 )

My Ethernet Cable is jacked both in my mac and my router . I just want my mac ( macbook pro 13'3 2010 ) to get an Ethernet ID . Instead besides my router flashes green at the "Ethernet" indication my macbook is just in no mood , in showing the ethernet .
The main problem is that i ve tried almost everything i know . I mean i switched preferences i opened DHCP and closed it many times , and also done some renews , nei a thousand renews . I can not understand what is going on . My mac's ethernet is not ruined i think because of the green light i said before on the router .
It's of paramount importance to me because some music software failed and require further activation , that needs Ethernet ID to build a Challenge Code.
Any help will be loved .
    -cheers

With the ethernet connected, go to... System Preferences/Internet & Network/NetworkUnlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
    Post back the results.
Your other alternative is to take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • How to connect ethernet cable to rMBP?

Recently I've thought of getting a new router w/ ethernet cable, but the problem is that my retina MBP doesn't have a slot for the cable. Is there anything I can use to connect the cable to my computer?

    Yes: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD463ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-gigabit-ethernet-adap ter
    Works great.

  • Connecting Ethernet cable causes shutdown

Our 17" iMac suddenly shutdown and refused to start up - makes the start sound but shuts down after a few seconds.
Managed to get it going by removing all cables and resetting SMU. Then connected to network thru Airport.
The moment I reinsert the Ethernet cable the Mac shuts down. Thought it might be a faulty cable, but does the same with another cable which works fine on another Mac. Problem only happens when the cable is connected to the router, indicating it is not a short in the Ethernet port.
I suspect the Ethernet card in the iMac. Any other suggestions?
Any tests I can run to identify the issue?

An iMac has a SMC and the steps for resetting the SMC are different from another Mac resetting the SMU. And apple has revised the process since the iMac Core Duos were introduced.
Are these the steps that you used?
    Reset the SMC
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Detach the computer's power cord.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Reattach the computers power cable.
    • Turn on the computer.
Run the Hardware Test on the original Install DVDs that shipped with your iMac.

  • Can't connect ethernet cable on Time capsule without messing Time Machine

    Hi All,
I just bought a Time Capsule couple of weeks ago.
I have a mac with time machine enabled on Wi-fi. I also have a vista that I can't get the wireless card to work properly... It keeps disconnecting and connecting from the internet.
So I decided to plug an Ethernet cable between the vista and time capsule. Everything was working great, except that Time machine cannot connect to time capsule as long as that cable is there...
Can't find anything to fix this...
So either solution is fine by me: either some tips on why Vista keeps dropping the internet connection or why my time machine can't back up with an ethernet cable plugged on Time Capsule.
    thanks,
    marcelo.

  • Where do I connect ethernet cable?

After connecting the ethernet cable to my Apple TV, where does the other end go? The ethernet connection on my computer, on my Apple Extreme, or on my cable modem???

Normally you'd connect it to your router via ethernet or wifi.
Depends if the cable modem or the Extreme is behaving as the main router, though potentially both could work.
You can even connect direct to a computer but would need to configure internet sharing for AppleTV to see the internet.

  • Losing internet connection (Ethernet, cable modem)

    Hi,
Lately (the past month or two), I am tending to lose my internet connection. (I never would before.) I connect via Ethernet to my cable modem. My ISP tells me that if I am getting 4 steady lights on my modem (with the 5th flickering), it isn't the modem. (I was thinking of replacing it.)
Rebooting the computer will fix it. One minute it's fine, the next it may have lost the connection. When I lose connection, Network Diagnostics* says my built in ethernet and network settings are ok (green). The rest will vary (going on memory here), ISP, may or may not be green, Internet and server will be definitely out, when this happens.
    * I have dragged it out of wherever it was buried and have it now on my desktop. It is VERY convenient to check what is going on with my connection problems. (I guess I have created an applet?) I recommend this to all.
I am considering re-installing the OS (archive and install) but am hoping someone can offer some suggestions for me to try short of that.
Disk Utility and Tech Tool Deluxe don't indicate any problems. I can try the Apple Hardware Test. I am hoping this isn't a hardware issue as I cannot afford a new Mac or other repairs. I can live with rebooting if I have to.
    Thank you.
    John L

The colors refer to what Network Diagnostics shows. Network Diagnostics is an Apple app that pops up when Safari has trouble connecting. I don't use Safari but loved having Network Diagnostics pop up so I figured out a way to use it independently of Safari. I dragged it out of wherever it was buried, put it on my desktop where it became an app and I use it at will to see why I am not connecting.
It will show green, yellow or red as an indication of each aspect of the connection: built in ethernet, network settings, ISP, Internet and server (being Apple's server). Right now, all are green. When I can't connect, I'll have several going from server backwards that are red. If it can't figure out the status I get a yellow light.
When I've asked my ISP why I am getting disconnected, they said if all 4 lights of the modem are steady (and the yellow one flickering), which they always have been when I've been disconnected, then it isn't the modem or them. They have good tech support and I trust them.
I have replaced the modem once in the past and that fixed things. I may do it again.
So, I don't know. I haven't tried the Safe Mode approach yet. I'll see if I can do that.
    Cheers,
    John

  • How can I find my printer's ip connected (ethernet cable) to a time capsule which is in network extending mode ?

I got a network printer connected to a Time Capsule which extends my wireless home network. But I can't manage to find out it's IP address nor i manage to find it on the network ! Am I doing something wrong ? Is there a way to tell Time Capsule which is the IP of the network printer ?
Hope somebody can help me out !

Most printers can print their status page.. on the status page is the current IP. I personally don't buy network printers that don't have a small LCD with enough menu to set things like IP address. And reveal the current IP.
Is the printer set to dhcp? If so it will get an IP from the TC.
Apple removed useful aspects of the old v5 utility which would give you a listing off all IP addresses passed out by the TC or connected to it.
You can however do a netstat scan from your computer.
In finder type in network utility into the search (apple have hidden it in a stupidly obscure location)
In network utility run a netstat scan which should pick up the printer.
One aspect of this, is that if the printer is in a deep sleep, power saving mode.. you may not pick it up.. certainly you should make sure the printer is awake and ready to run.. even if you need to reboot it.
There will be a problem if the printer is manually set to the wrong IP range.. then it won't come up at all. To fix that you will need to actually read the printer manual.. and find out how to reset it to its defaults and start again.

  • Cannot connect RJ45 ethernet cable to ethernet port on macbook pro

How do I connect an ethernet cable to the Macbook Pro. I have a standard RJ45 cable but it does not seem to fit in any of the ports. Is there a special ethernet cable for MacBook Pro. If so, is there a connector that connects that cable to the standard RJ45 cable.

There is no special port for Ethernet. You should find the port next to the MagSafe connector. Be sure you orient the cable correctly.

  • Trying to connect an XBOX 360 to my airport base station via  ethernet cabl

    Hello,
I have the older snow airport base station and was trying to connect my xbox 360 to it via an ethernet port. There are only 2 ethernet ports on the snow base station. one is being used by the cable coming from my dsl modem. the other free port i tried plugging into my xbox 360 to no avail. the xbox cant get an ip address. the open ethernet port on the base station is labeled with the circle logo. the one being used by my dsl modem has the two outer pointing arrows. I turned off the airport to my macbook and tried to connect my macbook to that port my xbox was in and it would not connect to the net either. Is it possible, i have the ports backwards. my wireless internet for all 3 mac computers works fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
    Thanks!!!
    Vinny

Yes, you have the ports connected backwards.
The WAN port is labelled with the "circle of dots" icon, and must be connected to your DSL modem.
The LAN port is labelled with the "double-headed arrow" icon, and that is where you connect ethernet cabled devices on your LAN.
See Apple's article AirPort Base Station: About the WAN and LAN Ports
What is surprising is that you haven't previously run into all sorts of problems with your existing setup. Once you cable things properly, you will likely have to power down your DSL modem and Base Station for a while (sometimes just an instant, sometimes overnight). After waiting, plug the modem into power and wait a minute. Then plug the base station into power and wait for it to restart.

  • Given wireless range of Time Capsule is 150', will this work? Put DSL modem on phone line in garage, connect ethernet to small office bldg (125') and connect separate ethernet to main house (200'). Time capsule on each end (or Airport Express)? Thx

Given Time Capsule wireless range is 150', will this solution work? In detached garage, connect DSL modem to phone line, then connect ethernet cable to DSL modem and run 125' to small office bldg. Connect separate ethernet cable to DSL modem and run 200' to main house. Put time capsule or Airport Express in each bldg resulting in separate wireless networks in each? Thanks.

This will work very well. You can run a CAT5e (or CAT6) Ethernet cable up to 330 feet...or 100 meters...with virtually no signal loss.
CAT6 costs a bit more, but will handle next generation Ethernet speeds, so if you have a choice, suggest that you opt for CAT6 cabling.
